Loesser wrote the duet in 1944 and premiered the song with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their Navarro Hotel housewarming party. Lynn considered it “their song,” and was furious when Loesser sold the song to MGM.[1]

A couple of questions that Hillary Clinton (or any other Democratic ’16 candidate) must answer
Do you think that the Republican commitment to total obstruction will continue if you are elected president? Or was that simply a strategy they employed against our first African American president?
If you think it will continue, what strategies will you use to implement the agenda you are proposing?
These questions are critical because – if we are going to have an honest discussion going forward – we have to be clear that the gridlock we’ve seen in Washington over the last 6 years is the responsibility of the Republicans.
To assume that the obstruction this President faced will end with his tenure is to affirm its racist roots. If a candidate wants to be direct about that, so be it. Lets have that conversation.
But any suggestion that Clinton (or any other candidate) can simply overcome it because they have a history of “reaching across the isle” is irrelevant. President Obama reached…and reached…and reached. It didn’t matter.

Despite some last minute Beltway theatrics, it seems likely that Congress will approve a bill funding most of the government for a year, while only funding the Department of Homeland Security (which implements immigration enforcement) through February. This move by GOP leaders is meant to persuade conservatives that really, truly, by golly, Republicans will take the fight to President Obama’s executive action next year, by staging a fight over funding for DHS to force him to relent.
But conservatives are right: If you take at face value House GOP leaders’ own lurid depictions of Obama’s action as a dire Constitutional threat, they are basically rolling over in the face of it. Indeed, if they don’t exercise maximum resistance now, barring a lucky break in the courts later, there may be little they can do to stop it.
The Hill reports this morning that even if Republicans were to refuse to fund DHS, it would be unlikely to stop Obama’s executive action. Here’s why:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Beleaguered studio Sony Pictures apologised on Thursday for racially insensitive remarks about President Barack Obama in company e-mails, the latest in a series of leaks that have left Hollywood reeling.
The unflattering leaks – including a producer labeling Angelina Jolie a “minimally talented spoiled brat” – have thrown Sony into damage control mode, amid few signs they are going to stop any time soon.
Other revelations have included the salaries of top executives and stars, unpublished scripts and the aliases used by some celebrities to lay low when they check into hotels.
Sony Pictures Entertainment is battling to contain the fallout from a massive hacking attack which some have blamed on North Korea, angry at a forthcoming movie which lampoons the reclusive state’s leader.
The latest leaks reportedly include an e-mail exchange in which Sony co-chairwoman Amy Pascal asks film producer Scott Rudin what she should ask Obama at a “stupid” fund-raising breakfast.
“Would he like to finance some movies?” joked Rudin, to which Pascal reoplied: “I doubt it. Should I ask him if he liked DJANGO?” – a reference to Quentin Tarantino slave movie Django Unchained.
Rudin shot back: “12 Years” – referring to harrowing historical drama 12 Years A Slave.
Pascal retorted: “Or the Butler” – Lee Daniels’ The Butler, about a black butler who serves generations of presidents at the White House.
Pascal apologised for her remarks on Thursday, saying: “The content of my e-mails were insensitive and inappropriate but are not an accurate reflection of who I am.
“Although this was a private communication that was stolen, I accept full responsibility for what I wrote and apologise to everyone who was offended,” she added in a statement cited by Variety.

Jeb Bush’s ‘Mitt Romney problem’

A former Republican governor leaves office and enters the private-equity business. He then considers a presidential campaign, drawing criticism from his party’s skeptical far-right base.
Mitt Romney? Yes, though as Joshua Green reports today, the same description applies to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), who’s reportedly weighing a national campaign in 2016.
Documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Nov. 27 list Bush as chairman and manager of a new offshore private equity fund, BH Global Aviation, which raised $61 million in September, largely from foreign investors. In November the fund incorporated in the United Kingdom and Wales a – structure, several independent finance lawyers say, that operates like a tax haven by allowing overseas investors to avoid U.S. taxes and regulations.
BH Global Aviation is one of at least three such funds Bush has launched in less than two years through his Coral Gables, Fla., company, Britton Hill Holdings. He’s also chairman of a $26 million fund, BH Logistics, established in April with backing from a Chinese conglomerate, and a $40 million fund involved in shale oil exploration, according to documents filed in June and first reported on by Bloomberg News.
The article added that the public won’t know who Jeb Bush’s foreign investors are because their identities are hidden behind an LLC incorporated in Delaware.
It’s worth emphasizing that Bush, like Romney, hasn’t been accused of financial wrongdoing. There’s nothing illegal or untoward about someone creating several private-equity funds and accepting millions of dollars in investments from foreigners.
But I think it’s safe to say this isn’t the ideal path for a prospective presidential candidate – as the most recent GOP candidate can attest.
John Brabender, a Republican consultant and veteran of presidential campaigns, told Bloomberg Politics, “Running as the second coming of Mitt Romney is not a credential that’s going to play anywhere, with Republicans or Democrats.”

Rick Perry: ‘Running for the presidency’s not an IQ test’

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is wrapping up his 14-year tenure as his state’s chief executive – the longest such tenure in Lone Star State history – and as he gets ready to launch a second national campaign, the governor is talking more to the national media. The goal, in all likelihood, is to help reintroduce Perry in the wake of his failed 2012 presidential bid.
It’s off to a curious start.
The recently indicted Texas Republican talked with the Washington Post earlier this week, for example, “for a wide-ranging 90-minute interview.” It was a reminder that Perry hasn’t quite shaken off some of his bad habits.
Last week, Perry studied income inequality and economic mobility with experts Scott Winship, Erin Currier and Aparna Mathur. In the Post interview, he was asked about the growing gap between rich and poor in Texas, which has had strong job growth over the past decade but also has lagged in services for the underprivileged.
“Biblically, the poor are always going to be with us in some form or fashion,” he said.
I’m not a Biblical scholar, but I can find no Scriptural references to the notion that that the poor “are always going to be with us.” [Update: see below]
Perry acknowledged that the richest Texans have experienced the greatest amount of earnings growth, but dismissed the notion that income inequality is a problem in the state, saying, “We don’t grapple with that here.”
I suppose that’s true – in order to “grapple with” a problem, policymakers have to at least try to address it – though the fact remains that income inequality has gotten much worse in Texas in recent years, and a 2012 analysis of income trends published by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that Texas was the nation’s seventh-worst state when it comes to the gap between rich and poor.
The governor’s new interview with msnbc’s Kasie Hunt was arguably even more informative about Perry’s progress as a national candidate.
For example, Hunt asked the governor, quite candidly, “Are you smart enough to be president of the United States?” He replied:
“Running for the presidency’s not an IQ test,” he said. “It is a test of an individual’s resolve. It’s a test of an individual’s philosophy. It’s a test of an individual’s life experiences. And I think Americans are really ready for a leader that will give them a great hope about the future.”
I’m a little surprised the governor didn’t reply with a more direct, “of course I’m smart enough” answer.

You’re a government official and want an official portrait? You’ll have to pay for it (or raise the funds). The bill bans taxpayer funding for official portraits of any Executive Branch employees, lawmakers and heads of legislative agencies
I am not saying that this is inevitable but I am saying that this is the future some on the Far Right (at least) desire whole-heartedly.
It isn’t about gender; it’s about intimidation and control.
It’s about maintaining the siege mentality among African-Americans.
Isolating them either in “ghettos” in the inner cities or by clearly demarking the difference between their rights as a Black person and those of the Whites around them where the communities are more integrated. Rights based not on the Constitution but on the Jim Crow laws of the South.
If we allow them to get away with this; they will move on to the next stage of their plan; an so on until they have reached their ultimate goal of total genocide. If we study history; we find such unequal treatment was meted out to Jews in Germany prior to their genocide. It is frightening; I know; but lying about what I think may well be the case would be worse. I don’t think everything will be ok if we just keep plodding along and allowing such practices and abuses to continue. If we don’t take a stand and say ENOUGH!
I think they will worsen to the point of out and out genocide. Sorry.
Some things just need to be torn down and rebuilt when the ravages of time have shown their structures to be faulty. the Police; Courts; just for starters.
It is an uphill battle however. The wealthy 1% and all of their minions have the power of money and organization to make a sustained stand.

Schools’ Discipline for Girls Differs by Race and Hue

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — To hear Mikia Hutchings speak, one must lean in close, as her voice barely rises above a whisper. In report cards, her teachers describe her as “very focused,” someone who follows the rules and stays on task. So it was a surprise for her grandmother when Mikia, 12, and a friend got into trouble for writing graffiti on the walls of a gym bathroom at Dutchtown Middle School in Henry County last year.
Even more of a surprise was the penalty after her family disputed the role she was accused of playing in the vandalism and said it could not pay about $100 in restitution. While both students were suspended from school for a few days, Mikia had to face a school disciplinary hearing and, a few weeks later, a visit by a uniformed officer from the local Sheriff’s Department, who served her grandmother with papers accusing Mikia of a trespassing misdemeanor and, potentially, a felony.
As part of an agreement with the state to have the charges dismissed in juvenile court, Mikia admitted to the allegations of criminal trespassing. Mikia, who is African-American, spent her summer on probation, under a 7 p.m. curfew, and had to complete 16 hours of community service in addition to writing an apology letter to a student whose sneakers were defaced in the incident.

Her friend, who is white, was let go after her parents paid restitution.
For all the attention placed on problems that black boys face in terms of school discipline and criminal justice, there is increasing focus on the way those issues affect black girls as well.
Data from the Office for Civil Rights at the United States Department of Education show that from 2011 to 2012, black girls in public elementary and secondary schools nationwide were suspended at a rate of 12 percent, compared with a rate of just 2 percent for white girls, and more than girls of any other race or ethnicity. In Georgia, the ratio of black girls receiving suspensions in the same period compared with white girls was 5 to 1, and in Henry County, that ratio was 2.3 to 1, said J D Hardin, the spokesman for the county’s school district. And researchers say that within minority groups, darker-skinned girls are disciplined more harshly than light-skinned ones.
Michael J. Tafelski, a lawyer from the Georgia Legal Services Program who represented Mikia in the school disciplinary hearing, and advocates for students say the punishment Mikia faced was an example of racial disparities in school discipline.
In response to the actions taken against Mikia, Mr. Tafelski said his office had filed a complaint with the Justice Department claiming racial discrimination and a violation of the Civil Rights Act. “I’ve never had a white kid call me for representation in Henry County,” Mr. Tafelski said.
“What kid needs to be having a conversation with a lawyer about the right to remain silent?” he said. “White kids don’t have those conversations; black kids do.”

Another thing the girls have in common is dark skin color, which researchers at Villanova University say affects the likelihood of being suspended. An analysis by Villanova researchers of data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health indicated that black girls with the darkest skin tones were three times more likely to be suspended than black girls with the lightest skin

That falls under “elections have consequences.” A lot of folks in Florida voted for Ralph Nader that year, as I recall, someone without a prayer of being elected, a throwaway vote. But, yes, it was SCOTUS that sealed the deal for the GOP.
To imagine a Gore presidency is to imagine a completely different country in 2014. We will never know what might have been. The fallout from the Bush Administration will haunt this nation for many, many years to come.

Wall Street giveaway threatens possible shutdown

Current funding for the federal government expires tonight at midnight, but at least on the surface, Republican leaders insist there’s no cause for alarm. They have a plan.
This afternoon, the GOP-led House will hold a vote on a $1.1 trillion spending package, which will draw significant Republican opposition — it doesn’t even try to derail President Obama’s immigration policy — but which Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) expects to pass with some Democratic support. Add some Senate support and possibly a three-day extension on current funding and … Voila! Shutdown averted.
It’s a reasonable strategy, though support from House Democrats waned yesterday as members learned more about one specific provision of the spending bill. As Rachel explained on the show last night:
“After the financial crisis, Congress passed something called Dodd-Frank — a set of regulations designed to keep anything like what happened to the economy in 2008 from happening again.
“One of those regulations said to the banks, ‘Hey, you know those incredibly risky trades you were doing that almost made the economy implode — oh, that did make the economy implode — the federal government is not going to ensure those trades anymore. You can do them yourself if you want, but they`re not going to be insured by the taxpayers. You have to keep those separate from the rest of your business.’
“House Republicans in the big budget bill they released last night decided to take that rule change away. They decided to tell the banks that, ‘Yes, the American taxpayers would be happy to once again underwrite that kind of high risk trading. Taxpayers would love to be on the hook for that again.'”
We don’t know exactly which member of Congress quietly inserted this measure into the spending bill — wouldn’t you know it, no one has been willing to take credit — but as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) noted on the show last night, “[T]his was a provision that was written by Citigroup lobbyists. I mean, they literally wrote it. They … re-edited it and made sure it said exactly what they wanted it to say.”
