President Obama and First Lady Michelle Travel to India

A float rolls down Rajpath during a rehearsal for Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi.President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are going to India this weekend to attend Tuesday’s Republic Day parade in New Delhi — the first time an American president will be a guest at the event, which celebrates India’s democracy and its constitution.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Obama to be a guest at the annual parade, which will take place Jan. 26.

“This is an enormously important event for the Indian people,” said Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes. The invitation “sends a very important message to the world, as well as to the American and Indian people about our commitment to embrace the potential of this relationship.”

Modi, who was elected in May 2014, visited the White House in September.

A number of business leaders and members of Congress will join Obama on the trip, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) Obama, Modi and Indian President Pranab Mukherjee will address Indian and American chief executives after the parade.

    US President Barack Obama’s 3-day visit to India has a packed schedule from the very beginning. Obama and his wife Michelle are expected to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday morning at 10 am.

    Obama, accompanied by a high-level delegation, has seven engagements on Sunday, including talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    The Air Force One would touch down at the Air Force Station, Palam, at 10 am. The presidential entourage would then drive down to the ITC Maurya, where the US first couple would be staying. Stringent security check has been put in palce at the super luxury hotel and surrounding areas.

    The presidential car, The Beast, has also arrived in the capital. A Cadillac limousine, The Beast’s armour plating is said to be eight inches thick and its doors weigh as much as those on a Boeing 757 aircraft. It has five-inch thick bulletproof windows with at least five layers to foil any effort by subversives. The Beast’s trunk is reported to contain everything from firefighting equipment and oxygen tanks to a cache of the president’s blood type.

    Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal as minister-in-waiting for the visit will receive Obama at the airport as well as escort and assist him through the visit.

    At noon, the US president would be accorded a ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, during which Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be present.

    At 12.30 pm, Obama would go to the Raj Ghat to lay a wreath at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. He would also plant a sapling at the venue.

    At 1 pm, Obama will attend a luncheon meeting with Modi at Hyderabad House.

    At 2.15 pm, the two sides are to hold delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House and at 3.05 pm, the two leaders would address the media.

    At 7.30 pm, Obama would call on President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan and attend the banquet hosted by the President at 8 pm.

    In between the Hyderabad House talks and his visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan, Obama is to head back to the hotel and meet the staff of the US mission here.

    On Monday, Obama would proceed to Rajpath to attend the Republic Day parade as chief guest at 10 am.

    At 3.49 pm, Obama would attend the traditional “at home” reception hosted by Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event will see the presence of senior politicians, diplomats, envoys and intellectuals.

    At 5.30 pm Obama and Modi would address the India-US CEO Forum Meeting at the Shahjehan Hall of Hotel Taj Palace.

    At 6.40 pm, the two leaders will attend the India-US Business Summit at the Durbar Hall of Taj Palace.

    Reports say that the Obamas are keen on eating at the Bukhara restaurant.

    On January 27, Obama would address an invited gathering at the Siri Fort auditorium at 10.30 am on the subject “India and America: The future we can build together”.

    At 1.50 pm, Obama and his entourage would take off for Riyadh to condole the death of Saudi King Abdullah.

    Earlier in the day, Obama cancelled his trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.

    New Delhi: Aiming to showcase India’s rich culture and tradition, a cultural programme has been organised for the US President Barack Obama at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here on Sunday.

    Obama, will be arriving here on January 25 on a three-day visit and will attend the Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest on Monday.

    The cultural programme has been put up by Seher, an NGO, which had also organised a similar programme during Obama’s India visit in the year 2010.

    “India is particularly known for its magnificent and legendary diversity of cultures and languages. This makes India virtually unique. It is this uniqueness that we wish to present for the visiting dignitaries on this historic visit to India,” Sanjeev Bhargava, director, Seher, said in a statement today.

    Beginning with an invocation from the Rig Veda, a text recognised as a world heritage work, the programme comprises short presentations in different styles with dancers coming together in a rhythmic finale.

    The event showcases five forms of Indian classical dances — Kathak, Manipuri, Oddissi, Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. The performance has been choreographed by Madhavi Mudgal.

    New Delhi, Jan 24: United States President Barack Obama is set to embark on his India trip this evening and will arrive in the capital on Sunday morning.

    During his three-day visit starting January 25, US President Barack Obama will have a really tight schedule in India.

    Obama is not just the first US president to attend the Republic Day function in India, but also the first to visit the country for second time.

    Air Force One, the presidential aircraft that will fly Obama to India, will have a brief refuelling halt over Ramstein in Germany and will touch down in Delhi at 10 am on Sunday at Air Force Station, Palam.

    On his arrival, Obama will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at about 12 noon at the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan by President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    Thereafter, he will pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the Rajghat at 12.40 pm and participate in a tree planting event there.

    Obama will then join Modi for a restricted working lunch at the Hyderabad House and participate in a “walk and talk” with the Indian Prime Minister there at about 2.45 p.m, the White House said.

    The two leaders will then have an expanded delegation level meeting, which is expected to last for about an hour. They will jointly address the press at about 4.10 pm.

    Later in the evening, Obama is scheduled to meet embassy personnel and families at ITC Maurya Hotel at 7.35 pm.

    He will then drive down to Rashtrapati Bhawan to attend the state dinner with President Pranab Mukherjee at 7.50 pm.

    On January 26, Obama will participate in the Republic Day celebration as the chief guest along with the First Lady. Later, the Obamas will attend a reception with Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

    In the afternoon, Obama and Modi will participate in a CEO forum roundtable and deliver remarks at a US-India Business Summit.

    On January 27 morning, the US President will give an address at Siri Fort Auditorium.
