    She handled it like Olivia Pope! She let Bob Simon know that she had always had the confidence and the skill to do a big movie. Did you see the look in her eyes when she brought up the so-called criticism by whites who thought that our stories and successes required white voices and white knights? It was on and she was ready for any bs. Certain white people in Simon’s age group still have not realized that A-A’s and other people of color the world over are through asking them for permission or validation. Women like Anna and Susan Rice and men like PBO and Eric Holder are their worst nightmare.

    Rosa Parks — because of her arrest, because of her activism — loses her job at the Montgomery Fair department store, where she was an assistant tailor. She wasn’t fired, they just let her go. And Raymond Parks also loses his job as well. And neither one of them is able to find sustainable employment in Montgomery after that — because of their activism, absolutely. They are basically boycotted. …

    This is a 1955 tax return, and of course her arrest is in December of that year, and their combined income is $3,749. So they’re, you know, the working poor, but they’re holding their head above water. And here is their tax return in 1959 when they’re living in Detroit. Their combined income is $661. They have descended into deep, deep poverty.

    Emergency dispatcher to 13-year-old girl as her dad dies: ‘Stop whining’

    A 38-year-old man and his fiance were changing a flat tire over the weekend when they were struck by a vehicle on a Maryland highway. The man’s 13-year-old daughter was sitting in the backseat with her little brother. She saw her father — who later died — run down. She watched the other car speed away. Then, frantically, she dialed 911.

    That’s when a dispatcher told her to “stop whining.”

    Rick Warrick got out of the car to change the tire Sunday night on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Laurel, about 20 miles from Baltimore. His fiance went with him. He had reportedly just finished tightening the last lug nut on a spare when a driver in another vehicle hit them and kept driving, NBC reported.

    When Warrick’s daughter called 911, the dispatcher didn’t ask how old she was, and called her “ma’am” several times. He asked to speak to someone else. Then he told her to “stop whining,” according to audio released on Thursday.

    Early Wednesday morning the $3.5 million home of Ronald and Malissia Clinton was firebombed.

    A tire filled with gasoline was ignited and blew out the front of their house at 2:30am. The sound of the explosions woke Ronald up and he quickly got his three children and dog out of the home. He then used the garden hose to help fight the flame until firefighters arrived on the scene.

    Mr. Clinton says that although he has no proof, he believes that this is a hate crime. The Clintons are a part of a small black minority in a Manhattan Beach community that is 84-percent white. They are said to be the only black family living on their street.

    And I tell you- my gut tells me this was racially motivated. And it was somebody that had the intent to harm, injure or even kill us,” Mr. Clinton said to My Fox LA. “I just know there is no other reason to target us. We have no enemies. Why us?” the pharmacist added in The Daily Breeze.

    Gov. Rauner wants Illinois to have right-to-work zones, which unions decry

    As Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner sets his sights on limiting the influence of unions in Illinois, he’s pushing an idea he’s dubbed “empowerment zones” — areas across the state where voters could decide if workers in their communities should be forced to join a union or pay associated dues.

    It’s a variation of what is more commonly called “right to work” — rules put in place at a statewide level to prevent unions from requiring workers who decline membership to pay related fees to cover the cost of collective bargaining they still benefit from. The concept, which generally applies to private-sector unions, has gained traction among conservative politicians across the nation as states try to spur economic growth following a brutal recession that saw businesses close and tax dollars dry up.

    The like-minded new governor is unlikely to get a statewide ban on forced union membership from a General Assembly firmly controlled by Democrats, who historically have relied on employee unions for support come campaign season. Empowerment zones represent a trial program on the local level.

    “I’m not trying to force the whole state to go right to work, I’m not advocating that,” Rauner said Friday at a stop in Decatur. “I want local voters, I want you to be empowered to decide this issue for yourselves, in your cities and in your county. I want that everywhere in the state. And the counties that liked the status quo and liked closed shop, keep it. Terrific. Those who want to compete and recruit more manufacturing firms and transportation companies, terrific.”

    Rauner views right-to-work laws as a way to make Illinois more attractive to businesses that weigh operating costs here with other states. If companies come, Rauner argues, so do jobs and the associated tax dollars to help support government. To opponents, the policy is purely an attempt to weaken unions and drive down wages. They contend such measures cause more harm than good, as workers make less money and are forced to then rely on government assistance programs.

    Taken with other ideas Rauner unveiled during his State of the State speech Wednesday, empowerment zones are being seen by some as just one piece of an all-out assault on unions and Illinois Democrats. Rauner also called for a ban on political donations by unions, giving taxpayers a say in the collective bargaining process at the local level, and ending the requirement that prevailing union wages be paid to workers on state and municipal construction projects.

    I’d think if I was a public-sector worker that Governor Rauner has declared war on us,” said Tom Balanoff, president of the Service Employees International Union Illinois State Council, which represents workers who provide home health care, janitorial and maintenance services.

    Scott Walker Wants to Know If Wind Power Is Making People Sick

    The two-year, $68 billion budget proposal Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker unveiled Tuesday includes a request for $250,000 to study the health impacts of wind turbines.

    Page 449 of the budget proposal includes a recommendation from the governor “directing the commission to conduct a study on wind energy system-related health issues.” The request states that a report should be submitted to the governor and legislature within a year after the budget goes into effect.

    “The request for a Wind Energy Health Issues Study was included with the intent to provide the Public Service Commission with comprehensive information to consider as they receive requests for future wind energy projects,” said Laurel Patrick, Walker’s press secretary, in a statement to The Huffington Post.

    Wind power in the state has been the subject of some public debate, drawing campaigns paid for by conservative groups with ties to fossil fuel interests on one side and by renewable energy advocates on the other.

    Last October, health officials in Brown County declared that eight turbines located at the Shirley Wind Farm posed a health hazard to residents. The chairwoman of the local board of health cited “ear pain, ear pressure, headaches, nausea” and “sleep deprivation” as symptoms among nearby residents. Local reports suggest Brown is the first county in the country to reach such a conclusion.

    The conservative Heartland Institute, which advocates for “free-market solutions,” has touted the Brown County decision, and used it as an opportunity to criticize the state for “imposing its wind power mandates.” Heartland has received funding in the past from fossil fuel interests. Walker has appeared as a guest speaker at the group’s events.

    Previous studies have found no link between wind farms and increased health problems. The Wisconsin Wind Siting Council, an advisory group to the state’s public service commission, issued a report to the state legislature last fall that concluded that “some individuals residing in close proximity to wind turbines perceive audible noise and find it annoying,” but “it appears that this group is in the minority and that most individuals do not experience annoyance, stress, or perceived adverse health effects due to the operation of wind turbines.”

He also badly damaged his credibility, so his use as a propagandist has been compromised. chuck todd, Scarborough and Lara Logan all lie to advance the GOP cause by attempting to inflict damage on the PBO administration, which IS their job.

    Bibi-Boehner Fiasco Continues as Fallout Spreads

    The Bibi-Boehner fiasco appears to be the gift that keeps on giving. At least, it continues to buoy the hopes of those who want the P5+1 and Iranian negotiators to forge a framework accord by the notional deadline of March 24 to be followed by a comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program by July 1.

    John Boehner’s (R-OH) unilateral invitation has served above all to persuade some nervous Democrats to rally behind Obama and his promise to veto any sanctions legislation during the ongoing negotiations. Indeed, until Boehner’s surprise announcement— which, incidentally, was extended (apparently falsely) “on behalf of the bipartisan leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate” (emphasis added)— Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) had a shot at peeling off enough Democrats to get a sanctions bill through the Senate even before March.

    But, as widely predicted, the invitation made it clearer than ever that Boehner’s—and Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY)—stunt was fundamentally a partisan maneuver designed to embarrass and undermine the president. This point was underlined by the praise it immediately elicited from the Sheldon Adelson-chaired Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) and the boast a few hours later by Bill Kristol’s Emergency Committee for Israel (ECI)—a Republican operation through and through—that it would host a reception for Netanyahu after his address to Congress.

    Charges dismissed in Arizona Iced Tea arrest outside Fayetteville liquor store

    Charges were dismissed Thursday against a man whose confrontation with an ABC officer outside a Fayetteville liquor store went viral on YouTube nearly two years ago and became known as the Arizona iced tea case.

    Christopher Lamont Beatty, 28, of New York, was charged with trespassing and resisting a public officer after the incident at the ABC store on Morganton Road on April 27, 2013. Beatty refused to give the officer, who approached him in the parking lot, his can of Arizona brand iced tea.

    On Thursday, Cumberland County District Court Judge Lou Olivera agreed with defense lawyer Allen Rogers’ motion to dismiss the case based on a lack of reasonable suspicion for a stop.Olivera ruled the stop was unconstitutional, and therefore, all evidence gathered from the stop was inadmissible.

    He referred to the legal metaphor “fruit of the poisonous tree,” which is used to describe evidence obtained illegally according to law.

    “I’m astounded this is finally over,” said Beatty, a former staff sergeant with Fort Bragg’s 82nd Airborne Division.The case had been repeatedly delayed over the last 18 months.”There’s an unfortunate culture in this community in relation to civil rights. Where a police officer, like Mr. (Rick) Libero, can order someone to hand over his can,” Rogers said.

    Beatty, who performs as a rapper under the name Xstravagant, was being videotaped for a music video in a parking lot outside the store, which is across from Cross Creek Mall.

    The video of his arrest has since drawn more than 1.5 million views on YouTube. Some who viewed it questioned why Beatty was taken into custody, whether his constitutional rights against unreasonable search and seizure were violated, and whether he had been racially profiled. Beatty is black; ABC Officer Rick Libero, who arrested him, is white.

    Economic Plan Is a Quandary for Hillary Clinton’s Campaign

    With advice from more than 200 policy experts, Hillary Rodham Clinton is trying to answer what has emerged as a central question of her early presidential campaign strategy: how to address the anger about income inequality without overly vilifying the wealthy.

    Mrs. Clinton has not had to wade into domestic policy since before she became secretary of state in 2009, and she has spent the past few months engaged in policy discussions with economists on the left and closer to the Democratic Party’s center who are grappling with the discontent set off by the gap between rich and poor. Sorting through the often divergent advice to develop an economic plan could affect the timing and planning of the official announcement of her campaign.

    Although people close to Mrs. Clinton say she has not yet settled on a specific platform, she is expected to embrace several principles. They include standard Democratic initiatives like raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure, closing corporate tax loopholes and cutting taxes for the middle class. Other ideas are newer, such as providing incentives to corporations to increase profit-sharing with employees and changing labor laws to give workers more collective bargaining power.

    Behind many of these proposals is a philosophy, endorsed by Mrs. Clinton’s closest economic advisers and often referred to as inclusive capitalism, that contends that a majority of Americans do not want to punish the rich; they just want to feel that they, too, have a chance to succeed. It also calls for corporations to put less emphasis on short-term profits that increase shareholder value and to invest more in employees, the environment and communities.

    The man who could cripple Obamacare isn’t shy about telling the world that he thinks the president is an “idiot,” posting altered images of the first lady in Middle Eastern clothing and expressing his hatred for the “Democraps” who enacted the health care law.

    David M.King, 64, is the lead plaintiff on the Supreme Court case that challenges the government’s right to grant tax subsidies to millions of Americans in certain states to make health insurance more affordable. When the case is argued on March 4, King — friendly, with graying hair and a mustache — will become the public face of King v. Burwell, the most significant threat to the Affordable Care Act since the 2012 Supreme Court case that put the law’s individual mandate on the line.

    The legendary basketball coach worked to integrate his teams even back in high school

    This Tuesday marks the 57th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that led to the desegregation of America’s schools. While many remember the decision, not so many recall that the board of education in that case oversaw the schools of Topeka. Below the high school level across Kansas — as well as at many levels all across America — schools were still segregated before 1954.

    In the late 1940s, there was a young player who would become one of the greatest names in the history of basketball at Topeka High School, which had been integrated from the time it was founded in 1871 but was fielding an all-white team known as the Trojans, the school’s mascot. (More on him later.) The other teams at Topeka High were integrated, but not basketball.

    At the same time, there was also an all-black team, the Ramblers, made up of students from the school. And events or social occasions that would bring the white and black students together were not allowed. African-American students could not use the school’s swimming pool and had to attend separate school dances.

    Topeka High did not fully claim the Ramblers. The Trojans clearly were the school’s team; the Ramblers couldn’t even use the school’s gym to practice. They played their games and held their practices at East Topeka Junior High. They had their own all-black cheerleading squad.

    Unlike some Kansas high schools in similar situations, however, Topeka High did help the Ramblers to some degree. It provided them with uniforms and with buses for away games, as they played in an all-black conference against teams from Kansas and western Missouri. Wherever they played, the Ramblers faced segregation. Meals on the road were served by the families of the opposing teams in gyms or churches. On overnight road trips, the players stayed in the homes of local African-American families.

    In 1948, the Trojans placed third in the state tournament. The next year, a member of the Trojans — the aforementioned young player — went to Buck Weaver, the principal, to try to get the two teams merged; and he would not give up after initially being rebuffed. He wanted to win a championship by fielding the best players possible.

    That player was Dean Smith — the same Dean Smith who helped integrate ACC basketball by recruiting Charlie Scott to play at the University of North Carolina in 1966.

    By then, Smith was a star at the University of Kansas.

    Some of the alumni from the old Ramblers teams later played significant roles in the city of Topeka and around the country. Joe Douglas became Topeka’s first African-American fire chief. Jack Alexander became the city’s water commissioner. Coach Merle Ross became an administrator for Topeka’s elementary schools. Ira Hutchinson became the first African-American to serve as deputy director of the National Park Service.

    None, though, had greater impact than Oliver Brown and Charles Scott did with their roles in Brown v. Board of Educationin 1954, which literally changed the course of America’s racial and civil rights history. Scott was one of the counsels for the NAACP, which brought the suit. (There is some irony here in that the player Smith chose to help integrate ACC basketball had the same name.) Brown was the plaintiff named in the suit representing 13 parents and their 20 children. He is the Brown in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. A former Rambler!

    Democrats Exercise ‘No’ Power in Senate to G.O.P.’s Dismay

    WASHINGTON — You could see the mischievous delight in John A. Boehner’s face as soon as he heard the questionThursday.

    Did he, the speaker of the House, have any idea how his Republican counterpart in the Senate was going to corral enough Republicans to support a plan that keeps theDepartment of Homeland Security funded?

    “No,” Mr. Boehner said, shrugging his shoulders. Then, he grinned as he contemplated the task that faced Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader. “He’s got a tough job over there. I’ve got a tough job over here. God bless him and good luck.”

    Now that they control both houses of Congress, Republicans are beginning to learn the limits of their newfound power. For the third day in a row, Senate Republicans called a vote on a bill to keep the Department of Homeland Security funded. And for the third time, it failed to clear a Democraticfilibuster.

    The problems were old and new: political divisions within the party, difficulties over managing the expectations of conservative lawmakers, and the simple arithmetic of getting to the filibuster-proof threshold of 60 votes when there are only 54 Republican senators. The tactics that had served them well when they were in the minority were now being effectively exploited against them.

    Democrats were gleeful as, one by one, they flashed thumbs down to the Senate clerks and recorded their no votes.

    “The Republicans are like Fido when he finally catches the car,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York. “Now they don’t have any clue about what to do. They are realizing that being in the majority is both less fun and more difficult than they thought.”

    Legendary University of North Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith died Saturday evening at the age of 83, according to the university’s official athletics website.

    Smith coached the Tar Heels from 1961 to 1997, tallying a record of 879-254 in those 36 seasons. He also won two national championships, in 1982 and 1993.

    He is often mentioned in the same breath as former Indiana and Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and longtime rival Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, all of whom are considered among the greatest men’s college basketball coaches of all time.

    Potus preached at the National Prayer Breakfast this past week. He brought the truth!

    At the National Prayer Breakfast, President Obama made a statement that you wouldn’t expect to be controversial: violence in the name of religion is a global problem and it’s bad.

    He referenced the war in Syria, the killings in Nigeria, anti-Semitism’s resurgence in Europe and religious violence in India. He admitted that it can be hard to “counteract such intolerance. But God compels us to try.” Then he offered a longer thought about humility:
