Garcia wins backing of key union group over Emanuel

Chicago mayoral challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia won the endorsement of a major Illinois organized labor group Saturday, backing that’s likely to bring more campaign cash and ground troops.

Service Employees International Union’s state council leaders will formally announce the endorsement Sunday, when they’ll also give details on campaign contributions and volunteers, said Jerry Morrison, spokesman for SEIU Local 1.

“We usually play to win in politics, and it will be significant,” Morrison said.Wilson cites Garcia opposition to red light cameras in endorsement

Garcia, speaking at the downtown St. Patrick’s Day Parade, welcomed the support.

Emanuel warns of major property tax hike if lawmakers don’t provide pension fix

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday said that if he doesn’t get major financial relief from state lawmakers, he’ll have to raise property taxes significantly next year.

The acknowledgment came as a re-election seeking Emanuel released his ideas on how to deal with the city’s grave financial condition, which includes a $550 million increase in payments to the police and fire pension funds.

The mayor wants three things from lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner: a Chicago casino, more money for Chicago Public Schools pensions and changes to the police, fire and teacher pension funding laws to stretch out payment increases into future years.

“Unless we are able to collaboratively pass legislation to modify our pension structure and put in place a smart funding formula, property tax bills will explode next year,” Emanuel’s plan states.

Mayoral challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia also would not rule out property tax increases, but he declined to say how he’d cover the skyrocketing government worker retirement costs.

THE WATCHDOGS: Whites still hold most top city jobs under Rahm Emanuel

    Posted: 03/14/2015, 09:00am | Dan Mihalopoulos

Whites continue to dominate the highest-paying jobs in Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office, in the mayor’s Cabinet and in the executive ranks of the sister agencies under his control, a Chicago Sun-Times examination found.

The overall city payroll also remains disproportionately a white bastion, though it has gotten slightly more diverse over the past three years under Emanuel, who topped the field in the Feb. 24 mayoral election but didn’t get the majority needed to avoid an unprecedented mayoral runoff next month against Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.

Of the more than 32,500 total city employees, nearly 46 percent are white, 31.8 percent are black, 18 percent are Hispanic and fewer than 3 percent are Asian American, city records show.

Those numbers represent slight declines in white and black workers and modest upticks among Hispanic and Asian employees since April 2012.

African Billionaire Says Investment Opportunities In Nigeria Are ‘Best-Kept Secret’

    Reported by Victor Ochieng

When talking about the richest figures in Africa, Aliko Dangote’s (pictured) name comes first, but not too many know about his empire, where he lives, how he lives, and the businesses he owns.

    So, who is Dangote?

To begin with, he hails from Nigeria, a country currently being attacked by the infamous Boko Haram. Because of the country’s security situation and economic and political conflicts, he lives his life with a high level of security.

Dangote lives in Victoria Island, a Lagos enclave that serves as home to individuals with deep pockets. He lives in a mansion that’s secured using technological security apparatus and guards, and is fitted with secret entry and bulletproof windows, all locked behind a royal black gate.

He is soft-spoken and selective on the topics he talks about. From politics to economic opportunities in his home country, he always has a wise choice of words. Dangote fully understands what his country’s treasures are. The fact that the nation is Africa’s biggest economy, having overtaken South Africa (despite the political instability), shows how much of a powerhouse Nigeria is. According to the billionaire, the investment opportunities in the country remain hidden from the rest of the world.

“Nigeria is one of the best-kept secrets,” Dangote says. “A lot of foreigners are not investing because they’re waiting for the right time. There is no right time.”

Dangote’s $15.9 billion empire puts him on top of Africa richest list and 67th richest globally, according to Forbes. That empire is premised on years of strategic investment and expansion that he has continued to experience in his sugar, oil and cement businesses.

The billionaire is currently awaiting the listing of his cement company internationally, a development that will likely see his business expand exponentially.

President Barack Obama – The Right Man For This Moment In History

    Nancy the ArtistMarch 15, 2015

I remember a moment just before Barack Obama was introduced at his first inauguration. He was in a hallway in the shadows appearing to be alone. His head was bowed and his eyes were closed. My sense was that he was preparing himself to face the enormous responsibility that was before him and that he was asking for the strength and wisdom needed for this awesome task.

On that same day Mitch McConnell was meeting with fellow members of his party stating their number one need and goal which was to destroy this president and his presidency.

Many people who come to this site expressed how depleted and disheartened they felt after the last midterm election which resulted in both houses of congress now being in the control of the GOP even though it appeared that that would be the outcome of the election. I shared in this experience.

Just after the election I saw the President in a press conference and in a few interviews and from listening to him and observing him something was quite evident about his appearance- he seemed as if a giant weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He seemed solid and strong and he had a sense of peace about him that seemed new to this moment. It was clear to me that this now so called lame duck president was aware of something that I wasn’t and that brought a sense of relief to me.

Many people who come to this site have also expressed that if only this president had experienced cooperation and support he could have accomplished so much more. I also share in these sentiments. But I think it’s very important to note and to realize that the resistance President Obama has faced is exactly what needed and needs to take place. You can’t treat an infection or an infestation unless you know that it’s there and if you don’t get down to the root or the cause it will continue to fester. This infection or infestation can only continue to survive in the shadows and the darkness where it is able to do it’s damage. As soon as it is exposed to the light of day it wants to scramble back as hide in the shadows.

Another important understanding about this resistance that is now being exposed is that the resistance will want to rise up to the level of that which it is facing. Another way of expressing this is that the depth of goodness and intelligence and strength that exists in the person of Barack Obama has called forth a barbaric and primitive resistance that attempts to be as potent as the force that it is opposing. What this means is that the presidency of Barack Obama has exposed this massive amount and degree of vulgarity that we are seeing in this country. It is being brought out of the shadows and it is now being fully exposed to the light of day.

Many people who come to this site have expressed the similarity we see today to the time of the Civil War. That war manifested due to a rise in tension that necessitated some major event to take place to attempt to address that tension. The Civil War was fought by the Confederacy in large part to prevent exactly what has taken place today where we see a man of color living the White House in the position that can be seen as the most powerful person in the world.

The inequality that is present has now grown to a degree that makes it a clear danger to humanity. It makes sense that we are once again at a point of great tension that has been exacerbated by the presence of this President and that has created a concern that we might be facing another civil war. In the speech the President gave recently in Selma he noted that although it seems that we are right back where we were in the past we are not. We have evolved. Because we have evolved I do not see us fighting another civil war on the battlefield but we are now engaged in a civil war of ideas.

When President Obama was taking the oath of office he knew he was facing an economy in free-fall, two wars and an unstable world. He had faced the run-up to the presidency and had experienced the vitriol that had taken place and he had live his life in his own skin. He is not naive. He had to know he was going to face a huge resistance but it’s hard to imagine that even he would have foreseen the depth to which this resistance would go. But he is not spending his time with thoughts of what might have been, he is busy confronting the reality of the moment. He is busy doing what he always does- spinning straw into gold and he is going this with tremendous grace.

I wanted to make a point. What we see happening in relationship to this President was absolutely necessary. We were ready to elect this President and we were ready to face that which has been exposed due to the presence of this President. Time and time again this President is proving that who he is and what he stands for is more powerful than that which opposes him and his ideas. The time for change has come. The monster that hides in the shadows is being exposed . To use basketball terms this President has forced them off their home court advantage and now they are floundering.

Pre-School Parents Ticked Off By Blue Ivy’s Presidential Arrival
    By patrice | March 13, 2015

Being the child of two of the biggest stars in Entertainment, it only seems right that famous parents would take absolutely no risks when it comes to their child’s safety. That seems to be the case when it comes to Blue Ivy Carter, who still gets carried by her parents whenever paparazzi catches them out in public.

While Beyoncé and Jay Z Carter have chosen to live in the spotlight, they still insist on giving Blue the normalcy that she deserves. They just want her to be safe. This is the exact reason why the three-year-old gets transported to her new preschool by three bodyguards and two cars, which insure that she gets in and out in a timely and safe manner.

All of this precaution though, has seemed to become a hassle, and creates backup in traffic for the other preschool parents. According to alleged sources from the West Hollywood preschool, the parents are not happy about all the precautions that are being taken for this one child.

“A security motorcade drops her off and picks her up from school. There are two cars and three bodyguards! Beyoncé and Jay Z have made things a huge hassle. Other celebrity kids get dropped off by one driver, not an entire staff.”

Sunday Long Read: Down And Out in Beattyville
    Posted by Zandar

When most people think of “poverty in America” images of boarded up inner city schools and black families on welfare immediately come to mind. The reality of poverty is that one of the poorest counties in America is just 2 hours from my apartment, in Lee County, southeast of Lexington. Lee County is 97% white, and the county’s per capita income is under $14,000 a year. But the idea here is that everything is the federal government’s fault, and more specifically President Obama’s problem, for structural issues that have been around for decades.

    Rikyrah, where are you?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell today said he plans to hold up a vote on the confirmation of attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch until the Senate passes a now-controversial human trafficking bill.

“This will have an impact on the timing of considering a new attorney general,” McConnell told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” “I had hoped to turn to her next week, but if we can’t finish the trafficking bill, she will be put off again.”

Democrats are now holding up the trafficking bill, which glided through the Judiciary Committee, after they noticed an abortion provision embedded in the bill.

A spokesman for Minority Leader Harry Reid slammed McConnell for holding up Lynch’s nomination.

“There is nothing stopping the Senate from confirming Lynch and continuing to debate the trafficking bill this week, except Senator McConnell’s unwillingness to bring her nomination up for a vote,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. “No more excuses, no more delays. Confirm Loretta Lynch now.”

Here are President Obama’s full remarks from the Gridiron Club Dinner

    SNIP:
Despite a great performance tonight, Scott has had a few recent stumbles. The other week he said he didn’t know whether or not I was a Christian. And I was taken aback, but fortunately my faith teaches us forgiveness. So, Governor Walker, as-salamu alaykum. (Laughter and applause.)

Scott also recently punted on a question of evolution, which I do think is a problem. I absolutely believe in the theory of evolution — when it comes to gay marriage.

And, finally, Governor Walker got some heat for staying silent when Rudy Giuliani said I don’t love America — which I also think is a problem. Think about it, Scott — if I did not love America, I wouldn’t have moved here from Kenya. (Laughter and applause.) Still trying to deal with the overstaying the visa thing. But hopefully the court is okay with the immigration initiatives.

Staying focused, moving forward — it’s not always easy in this climate. I mean, you guys are always picking us apart. Recently, I made some comments about the Crusades, and people started blowing it all out of proportion, scrutinizing every single word. What is this, the Spanish Inquisition? (Laughter.)

And then I got flak for appearing on a video for BuzzFeed, trying to reach younger voters. What nonsense. You know, you don’t diminish your office by taking a selfie. You do it by sending a poorly written letter to Iran. (Laughter and applause.) Really, that wasn’t a joke.
