#FreddieGray dies after cops severed 80 percent of his spine

Freddie GrayA man injured after being arrested by the Baltimore police died today, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Freddie Gray had to undergo a double surgery on three broken vertebrae and an injured voice box on Tuesday, after he was released by the police. He died today after days of remaining in a coma.

The 27-year old was arrested last week for an undisclosed violation. The police said that he was restrained on the ground by an officer during the arrest, but appeared to be fine when he was taken to the district station. However, a cell phone video shows that the arresting officers used force that some may seen as “brutal.”

Protests have broken out in his neighborhood since Gray was sent to the hospital.

“What happened to Freddie was unnecessary and uncalled for,” the Rev. Jamal Harrison Bryant of the Empowerment Temple said to protestors on Saturday. “All of those police officers involved need to be held accountable and answer for what they did, and need to be terminated from their positions,” he urged.

The case is pending a review by a “blue-ribbon” panel commissioned by the police.

    Excerpt from article linked below:

The injuries he had were not casual ones; the Sun spoke to medical experts who said that they would have been caused by serious trauma. Was an injury to his back the reason that witnesses thought his legs didn’t work, or was he injured in the van? At the very least, anyone trained as a police officer would—or should—know that a spinal injury can be exacerbated if someone is moved improperly, whether by being dragged or bumped around in a moving vehicle.

Gray was in far worse shape at the end of the ride than he was at the beginning, which makes the question of what happened in the van an urgent one. It was, in effect, a black box that Gray entered. For many people in this country, that is too often a summary of their experience with the criminal-justice system as a whole. It is one of the reasons that people run.

That makes perfect sense because they already broke his neck and severed his spine before they dragged him to the van. The rough handling and/or additional beating would have caused further damage to his spine, so he would have continued to worsen until he got medical treatment to stabilize his neck.

A friend of mine from many years ago had a sports related accident when he was in high school. His neck was broken and his spinal cord was bruised not severed, but he was a quadriplegic when I met him. I cannot imagine what condition a person would be in with 80 percent of their spinal cord severed, or if anyone could even survive the kind of injuries that Freddie Gray suffered at the hands of the Baltimore cops.

      This is murder, murder one.

Body cams & training talk are just the establishment’s way of deflecting, distracting, and covering up the hate-filled rage of these mediocre, fearful cowards.

These same characters are the ones who hire them as cops to protect our communities, when in fact, they are placed in these positions to demean, devalue, denigrate, destroy and kill us.

That pathologist needs to GTFOH with that bullshit about “challenging to determine what’s happening when the police is involved.

Deputy Commissioner Rodriquez, GTFOH too with saying Freddie was upset when those pigs dragged & threw him in that van. HE WAS IN PAIN, MOFO!

WE’VE GOT EYES & EARS. Freddie Gray was screaming in extreme pain and his legs were dragging.

“WE’VE GOT EYES & EARS. Freddie Gray was screaming in extreme pain and his legs were dragging.”

They wanted to hide the extreme injury to Freddie by not calling an ambulance. An ambulance could have taken him to the hospital and given him the emergency medical attention that he needed. They did not want to even give Freddie this chance to live!

      • Ametia says:

        SPEAK ON IT!

that commissioner was not seeing the same video we saw. Freddie wasn’t talking, he was yelling out in PAIN. Did they taser the life out of him, beat him about the neck & vocal cords.

An autopsy should determine how Freddie’s spine was ripped to shreds and died?

      • yahtzeebutterfly says:

  7. I don’t want to hear ISH about ‘good police officers’. Not one damn thing. A ‘good police officer’ wouldn’t have stood by while other officers broke the spine of a healthy 25 year old man.

  9. Police release names of officers involved in Freddie Gray arrest

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/21/us/baltimore-freddie-gray-death/

(CNN)—The Baltimore Police Department released the names of six police officers suspended with pay after the arrest of Freddie Gray, who died of a spinal injury Sunday, as the mayor promised answers.

The officers were identified by the department Tuesday as: Lt. Brian Rice, 41, who joined the department in 1997; Officer Caesar Goodson, 45, who joined in 1999; Sgt. Alicia White, 30, who joined in 2010; Officer William Porter, 25, who joined in 2012; Officer Garrett Miller, 26, who joined in 2012; and Officer Edward Nero, 29, who joined in 2012.

After an “in-custody death,” it is standard procedure to release the names of officers involved, said Baltimore Police Department spokesman Capt. Eric Kowalczyk.

It doesn’t mean the officers did anything wrong, nor does it mean that these were the only officers involved, he said.

Of the six officers, three were on bikes and initially approached Gray, another made eye contact with Gray, another officer joined in the arrest after it was initiated and one drove the police van, Kowalczyk said.

  10. Where are the officers who broke a 25 yr old’s back and crushed his voice box? You insecure penis envy losers. #FreddieGray

Seriously. Give awards to cops for doing their job.
I suggested that we should just hire hookers for them so they wouldn’t have to spend so much time fucking the people to get their rocks off.
Anyway my friend; I’m on your side. I am sick of people who should know better trying to convince me that there are good cops a’plenty out there.
      Just look at this video.
NO! You look at the multiple videos of murdering Pigs torturing and suffocating and beating to death American citizens who have the right to never be treated with anything but respect. I don’t give a good fuck what color they are except that such a disproportionate number are Black.
You look at the families still grieving and wondering why their child was taken from them for no apparent reason but that some vicious psychopathic cop needed to take his rage out on someone he could get away with killing.
“Why; they’re just good men; doing a tough job”
Bullshit! They’re just well placed psychopaths exploring the limits of their own sadistic nature and their ability to get away with it.

While the court documents allege that Baltimore Police Department Officer Garrett Miller arrested Gray after finding a switchblade in his pocket, the Gray family attorney called the allegation a “sideshow.” Gray was carrying a “pocket knife of legal size,” attorney William Murphy told CNN.

Police never saw the knife and chased Gray only after he took off running, the attorney said.

He was White and our other friend was Black. When we arrived and walked in it was immediately made clear that we could stay but our Black friend had to go. Of course he left and we went with him. My friend told his relatives that if his friend wasn’t welcome; neither were we. I remember the hot, burning anger that I felt in the face of such openly racist behavior. (This was in Baltimore) My friend was so pissed; and hurt; and ashamed. So we stopped and we talked about it amongst us and we finally decided that we would go elsewhere and party and we did. We said, “Fuck those people. They’ll all be dead and we’ll still be brothers.” Because you can’t change the minds of real racists. The fact that they were hard-core enough to publically humiliate a black man and their own relative and his friend said it all.

Timeline: Terror from the Right Since Oklahoma City Bombing

    April 19, 2015 • Jessie Daniels • racism

Today marks the twentieth year since the April 19 bombing of the Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City by white supremacists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nicholas, in which 168 people were killed and dozens more were injured.

Since the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, there have been many more terrorist plots, seditious conspiracies, individual killings and murder sprees. This timeline, compiled from SPLC data, offers an overview.

You can’t get to the bottom of killer cops, until the RACIST, CORRUPT SYSTEM is DISMANTLED.

The system is RIGGED for cops and against BLACK AMERICANS.

    • Liza says:

Folks need to stop heralding the body cams on cops as the big answer to this crisis. Body cams are just one thing that might help if and only if the cops can’t edit the footage in any way whatsoever. AND, if this is not going to become the basis for laws forbidding citizens to film the cops committing acts of violence and murder.

The problem is rooted in the cops themselves. Who are these people? What kind of person gets hired to be a cop? What screening mechanisms are in place to prevent sadists, sociopaths, psychopaths, white supremacists, and other inappropriate candidates from becoming cops? And why aren’t bad cops being dealt with by eliminating them from the force? Why are bad cops protected at all levels in the criminal justice system?

  20. Baltimore Police severed Freddie Gray’s spine and then dragged him and threw him in the van. What makes America think it’s better than ISIS or Al Qaeda?

    • Ametia says:

Yes, look at Freddie’s legs, flailing about when they were dragging him. He had no spinal support. His legs look deformed.

KEEP LOOKING AT HIS BODY as they dragged him. He couldn’t walk if he tried.

They made it look as if they had to drag Freddie, that he wasn’t cooperating with them.

      GOD HAVE MERCY

    • Thank you SG2 for expressing this enlightened opinion. There is no difference. Isis- beheads people they don’t like. Police- Choke or Press or brutally bludgeon a man to death.

Which do you think is slower; more painful and more brutal?

    • No offence but how does one ever get justice for a life taken?

I just want the killing to stop; because we stopped it not because we caved.

I want to make America see that we can’t use any Police Department (meaning all of them now in existence in America) that is willing to allow itself to be used as a tool of the “Fascist Right”.

I want them to wake up to the cage they are all in and the Police that have them by the balls.

I want all of us to stop fighting with our friends and begin to co-operate for victory. Then when that’s done; we can argue over whether or not you ever knew a good cop.

Of course victory for me may not be the same as victory for you; I admit that, but that simply means we need better communication as to our vision and our hopes for this country.

But no matter how far left we each believe we should take it; we all agree we need to be way left of where the Right-Wing would take us and is taking us; down a road to civil war and anarchy.

        You write

we need better communication as to our vision and our hopes for this country.

I wish to see an end to police negatively profiling and stereotyping members of the Black community and other minorities, an end to police chiefs allowing racist individuals to remain on their force, and an end to police departments looking the other way when they know that a bad cop on their force has engaged in illegal tactics.

I would like to see more police departments connecting to the community that they serve.
Hayward Police Department in California is a good example as seen in this video:

          Dear Yahtzeebutterfly,

Please don’t take offence; (unless your gonna’ take the gate too. LOL) but what I believe you have done is repeat back to me the very arguments I have just addressed however I realize that seeing past is not easy at first.. No condescension intended. I know I can sound a bit arrogant sometimes.

“I believe the majority of the police officers in our country are good cops. (We need more of the good cops to be whistleblowers.)”

Riddle me this: If the majority of police are “good cops”; what is it that is stopping them from speaking up against those few bad apples?

If the majority of cops are good cops; why have the number and the level of attacks on citizens; most of color increased over the last forty years rather than decreased?

I have heard this until it is almost a cliché.

Usually this message is coming from some City Mayor or Police Commissioner. But once in a while I also hear it from an average person.

But it is a lie. *Lie. *A statement; represented as truth; but which is actually *not true. * A statement designed to deceive. Once you have accepted this lie as truth; you are blinded to the real problem. *********************************** “I simply want to see Police Chiefs firing the bad cops and prosecutors to charge the bad cops and take them to trial.”

Yes; wouldn’t we all. We don’t diverge here.

The Problem is that the Chiefs are the same as the cops. The Chiefs are either complicit in the actions of these “Bad Apples” or they are the ones who taught the cops how to get away with it after years of getting away with it on the streets themselves; after being trained by Chiefs who began as cops trained how to get away by Chiefs who have been getting away with it on the streets for years. And so on.

It isn’t a new thing. It is a very old thing being perfected by Psychopathic Chiefs; hiring Psychopathic Cops; serving the interests of whichever Party is willing to provide them with the most opportunities to practice their “Craft” with as little accountability as possible. (Now I wonder what Party or Parties might be willing to sanction such behavior on the part of a class of highly motivated; well trained to military standards; predators posing as “Protectors” of the people?) Hmm.

So; Nah. I’m afraid I can’t buy your “response?”

My cousin married a Baltimore Cop and he turned out to be a brutal abuser of citizens; especially Black citizens. Some of the cops in Baltimore sort of specialize in terrorizing young people on the streets. Mostly Black kids but not only Black kids by any far stretch of the imagination and a few pick mostly on the white kids. What do we call that? Mostly though I remember the cops who worked for my aunt and uncle delivering flowers and how they spoke of black people. I heard them tell stories of how they beat this black guy or framed some poor guy walking home for a crime he didn’t commit just so they wouldn’t come home empty handed at the end of a shift they had spent drinking. No Shit!

In short; this is sadly no surprise to me and it isn’t the only case in Baltimore in the past year or two. They are killing Black people for breathing in Baltimore too. I am so sorry for this man’s family like the other families who have lost everything to a vicious predator cop.

Excerpts from this linked article by Eric Dyson:

      http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/17/opinion/racial-terror-fast-and-slow.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=c-column-top-span-region&region=c-column-top-span-region&WT.nav=c-column-top-span-region&_r=1

IN the past two years, this country has held events commemorating 50 years since the triumphs and key struggles of the civil rights movement: the March on Washington, the Civil Rights Act and, most recently, the “Bloody Sunday” march in Selma, Ala.

Yet the glory of the past runs up against the gory details of the present.

“The killing this month of Walter L. Scott by Officer Michael T. Slager highlights two interlocking truths: Social protest forces us to see realities we would rather avoid, and blacks live in mortal fear for our lives in a manner that most whites don’t see or understand.”

………Another truth lies in plain sight, echoing through videos of the last moments of a man’s life and hashtags of protest: The lived experience of race often feels like terror for black folk, whether that terror is fast or slow. Fast terror is explosive and explicit; it is the spectacle of unwarranted black death at the hands of the state, or displays of violence directed against defenseless bodies.

Slow terror is masked yet malignant; it stalks black people in denied opportunities that others take for granted. Slow terror seeps into every nook and cranny of black existence: black boys and girls being expelled from school at higher rates than their white peers; being harassed by unjust fines by local municipalities; having billions of dollars of black wealth drained off because of shady financial instruments sold to blacks during the mortgage crisis; and being imprisoned out of proportion to our percentage in the population.

…….The failure to be seen as human unites black people across time in a fellowship of fear as we share black terror, at both speeds, in common.

The way we see race plays a role in these terrors: Fast terror is often seen and serves as a warning; slow terror is often not seen and reinforces the invisibility of black suffering. Fast terror scares us; slow terror scars us.

America’s cop problem has reached a critical mass.

If a pipe were to burst in your house, you would deal with it right away. It wouldn’t matter what else was going on in your life at that moment, you would deal with the damn pipe. I’ve had this happen. I’ve had this happen in the middle of the night.

That’s what this cop problem is, and I just don’t see an appropriate response from those who are supposed to respond.

Where is the DOJ? Silence is not an option. Changing AGs is not an excuse. They need to get on with it. NOW!

    • “That’s what this cop problem is, and I just don’t see an appropriate response from those who are supposed to respond.

Where is the DOJ? Silence is not an option.”

The DOJ is in Washington; where they will likely stay; unless forced to action. Then it will likely be in vain. If pushed to the wall they will throw a cop or two up onto the bloody scaffold to mimic decisive action and actual repentance for their failure to prevent …….

The DOJ is just another level of the rings of defense and obstruction between the Cops and the people who hire them.
You can’t look to the Lion to sympathize with you when the Leopard eats your child.
Given the chance, he will eat your other child.

To be expected, cops don’t confess…

    • Ametia says:

So these scumbag COPS get to BREATHE & PLEAD. Freddie, Walter, Eric, Michael, they don’t get to BREATHE & PLEAD.

      THEY GET MURDERED BY COPS

  25. Liza says:

So they broke his neck because….

  26. Baltimore police reported #FreddieGray suffered a medical emergency during transport. A severed spine does NOT just happen, mofos!

    • Ametia says:

I’m a nurse, and I see the signs of spinal damage while they had in in captivity.

If you look at the video take, Freddie was struggling to even stand , let alone walk, and he was moaning out in pain.

These mofos had done damage to his spine, even before they threw him in the van like a piece of trash!

      Brutal, heartless, sick muthafuckas!

      • Liza says:

That’s what I think too, Ametia. He was so limp when they dragged him.

      • Liza says:

The cops converted him from a healthy young man in his 20s into a quadriplegic. Then they continued to torture him doing only God knows how much further damage to his beaten and crippled body. And they did this because he happened to see them and wanted to get away from them.

  27. rikyrah says:

    he was MURDERED
    MURDERED
    MURDERED
    MURDERED
    MURDERED

    plain and simple.

    no doubt about it.

  28. Liza says:

I should certainly hope so. It’s like the DOJ has been AWOL since they declined to charge Darren Wilson but produced the damning Ferguson report. Well, they have to do both. Charge and prosecute the cops who are the perpetrators of these murders AND investigate and report on the police departments that hire and retain them.

  29. Baltimore police: KKK thugs parading around with a badge and police uniform. They like them unarmed. Savage beast mofos.

    • Liza says:

“Thug” is too kind of a word. These white boys are deranged, psychopathic killers. If they weren’t cops they would probably end up doing life without parole. It would actually be helpful to know more about them, but the cop unions will make sure that doesn’t happen.

The DOJ is going to have to step up. If these are not civil rights violations then what the hell is?

      • Ametia says:

The Federal Government has always been the avenue for BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA TO RECEIVE ANY SEMBLANCE OF JUSTICE.

Murdering Joe did a segment this morning BASHING the Federal Government about something and in the next breath asking what the feds can do to stop these killings by cops. He flat out told the viewership. THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT BE TRUSTED.”

That’s short for “states rights” for the wing nuts, so they can hold on to their fear of the government, while continuing to SUCK on ITS TEETS. And the white cops can keep the status quo of KILLING BLACK PEOPLE.

        Tweet it!

    • Liza says:

They gave him a homicidal beating. Were they expecting him to live? Did they kill him intentionally or did they just not care whether he lived or died?

How do you do this to another human unless you are a psychopath?

And where is the Department of Justice on these most recent killings? Haven’t heard a word. Is the GOP afraid that Loretta Lynch will prosecute some of these cops?

      • Is the GOP afraid that Loretta Lynch will prosecute some of these cops?

        *******************
        Yes!

      • I’ve said it before and I will say it till I am rotting. There is no such thing as a good cop in America. Because there is no good Police department with good practices and good training hiring good men to do a good job for the good people of this country (which I will not call good).
You are correct. What we currently have is a “Police Department”; in the larger sense; that is operated by Bureaucrats seeking advancement rather than men dedicated to protecting the people from actual violent criminals.
These are often psychopaths drawn to the work by the easy, clear-cut, nature of the work; the plethora of opportunities to lie, steal, kill and torture without accountability.
These are the same type of men who were drawn to volunteer for duty in the Death Camps of the “Third Reich”.
And these are the men doing the hiring, training, and cover-up for the men they hire as street cops.
More psychopaths seeking power and wealth and the “fun of the kill” and the thrill of getting away with it due to your status as a “trusted?” member of the community.
PSYCHOPATHS. Not good men doing a tough job just trying to do their best.
That is pure fantasy. I don’t give a good fuck what they tell me. I don’t care what they tell each other. I don’t care what any writer or blogger or journalist tells me.
There is a culture of fear in this nation.
Fear of the Cops? Yes of course but fear of being without them; of making them your enemy; of admitting what we know in our hearts to be true.
It is a cover-up of national scope and it affects almost everyone to one extent or another. It is the shadow of unease that falls over us when we speak out against our government or our Police. As though they might come to the door and drag us off for “Special Treatment”.
Judging by the news out of Chicago, it could happen.
Judging by our “Black Sites” and Guantanamo Bay it already is.
It is at times tempting for a Lilly White fellow like me to want to criticize some black person in the news or even another blogger for their hesitation to speak out and say it like it really is but always restrain myself because I remember what it means to be a Black Man in America; especially some parts. Not that I know this from experience but I have been American for 56 years and I have watched from both sides and I see with my eyes what has been done and what is being done. You don’t have to BE black to understand that it is a drastically more serious and dangerous thing for a Black man to walk out his door than for a White man. That idea is one sold to us by White Hating Rhetoric of early Black activists who were rightly pissed and trying to rally their people against their oppressors. Before it was accepted that a White man might stand up and speak out against the brutal treatment meted out to the other human beings around him even if they weren’t the same color as he.
Today though; we know that there are many millions of Americans who are both White and also able to see,(I know; you thought it couldn’t happen).
If the Civil Rights movement did any one thing for America, likely to make a difference; which did; in fact; make a difference; it was that it opened the eyes of young Americans who were already up in arms about the War and poor educational standards among poor whites etc.; and allowed them to see; to care; to sometimes march with; to empathize with this whole huge faction of the people that otherwise; they would never have thought about.
These young people have become our writers; Philosophers; our Conscience.
We see. We cry. We understand that grief and pain is the same for all people.
What we don’t get, is how anyone can maintain such a hatred; a disrespect; and a blatant dismissal of an entire segment (13% I believe) of our own population. UNLESS; they are conscienceless Psychopaths; hiring Psychopaths to carry out their vicious plan to control ne completely dominate “We The People”
