Buck and the Preacher
Love this movie!
Buck and the Preacher is a 1972 American Western film starring Sidney Poitier as Buck and Harry Belafonte as the Preacher. Buck is a trail guide leading groups of former slaves trying to homestead in the West, immediately after the American Civil War. The Preacher is a swindling minister of the “High and Low Order of the Holiness Persuasion Church”. Together, they protect a wagon train from bounty hunters.
This is the first film Sidney Poitier directed. Vincent Canby of The New York Times said Poitier “showed a talent for easy, unguarded, rambunctious humor missing from his more stately movies”.
The notable blues musicians Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Don Frank Brooks performed in the film’s soundtrack, composed by jazz great Benny Carter.
Buck and the Preacher opens with a deep rhythm and blues soundtrack reminiscent of a John Wayne Western that was given deep soul and harmony from the 1970s. The camera switches scenes to a camp of African-Americans who have been just freed from slavery and are heading West for a better life. A band of men on horseback terrorize the camp by burning wagons and tents and killing men, women and children. The leader of these white bandits, DeShay (Cameron Mitchell), is wearing an old cavalry jacket hinting at his military past.
Buck (Sidney Poitier) enters the scene and dismounts his horse to walk up to his home. DeShay makes Buck’s wife, Ruth (Ruby Dee), wave to him as if everything is all right. Buck begins to approach the house and is then caught in a firefight between DeShay’s outlaws. Buck remounts his horse and flees after being chased by the bandits. He then stops at an apparently empty campsite with a burning campfire, food and a horse. A naked man, the Preacher (Harry Belafonte), is bathing at a nearby stream and approaches the campsite to dress, but Buck steals the Preacher’s horse and his breakfast at gunpoint.
The Preacher dresses and takes Buck’s horse to the nearest town where he grabs a drink and finds out the location of the nearby camp from an African-American boy working at the general store. The Preacher is approached by DeShay and told that any information helping him to find Buck or bringing Buck in dead or alive will be worth a five hundred dollar reward. The Preacher is excited about this because he has a good feeling Buck is at an African-American wagon camp of which the little boy spoke.
Buck returns to the camp and is told by the men that an elderly Indian wise man thinks they should continue West and not turn back. The elder is shown throwing animal teeth on a towel, which the audience assumes to be a prediction of the future. Buck agrees to further help the group as the Preacher appears and punches Buck in the face. Buck then agrees to feeding the Preacher and giving him his horse back – after which the Preacher must depart and leave their camp. Buck does this because he fears the Preacher’s motives for wanting to stay after he is caught looking at the women folk and wondering aloud where the money was kept.
The Preacher leaves the group and stalks Buck when he leaves to make a deal with the Native Americans. The Native Americans pursue the Preacher and Buck bargains with them for protection of the wagon group. The Native Americans are portrayed as shrewd bargainers who constantly haggle for a better deal with Buck. After reaching an agreement, the Preacher has a new-found respect for Buck because of his hard work effort and desire to help the traveling freed slaves.
While the two protagonists are negotiating, DeShay and his men raid the camp again and do more damage. The Preacher turns cheek at this point in the film and stops attempting to corner and kill Buck for the reward because of Buck’s compassion towards the wagon camp. The Preacher then tells Buck where DeShay and his men are camped and suggests an ambush.
Buck agrees to the Preacher’s plan, and together they ambush DeShay’s campsite – killing him and most of his men. The sheriff from a nearby town pursues the pair, but they escape on horseback. The two men – along with Buck’s wife – then decide to rob the bank at the town where they murdered DeShay’s men in hopes of gaining more money for the African-Americans in the camp so they have a better chance of surviving the winter. The three unsuccessfully rob the mail office first and then cross the street to rob the bank. The sheriff returns to town during the robbery and chases the three robbers – along with their bags of loot – out of town.
Buck, the Preacher and Ruth ride hard for the Indian Territory and reach it just in time. A Native American war party is defending the boundaries of their territory and does not permit the sheriff and his posse to cross into their lands. The sheriff continues the search and finds the wagon camp but decides not to attack it. One of the men in the posse suggests they attack the camp to bring out Buck, but the sheriff disagrees arguing that the African Americans did no harm.
In anger, the man kills the sheriff and orders the posse to attack. Buck approaches the wagon camp and lures the posse into the mountains. A gunfight ensues, and the Preacher is wounded but the posse is defeated. The Native Americans who said they would not fight Buck’s battle send several warriors to help and end up being the force that turns the tide of the shootout in Buck’s favor.
The movie ends with Buck, the Preacher and his wife riding happily into the prairie.

Sometimes a girls just gotta rant
Honestly, I don’t rant very often. But these emos getting into their fee-fees about President Obama and the TPP is just so, well…emo of them.
Ever since the President told Chris Matthews that “Elizabeth Warren is wrong,” I’ve seen one diary after another at Daily Kos about how he “attacked” her. Really?!!! He didn’t call her a paid shill for the corporatocracy or a warmonger or Bush-lite. As a matter of fact, he didn’t call her any names at all. He f*cking disagrees with her. And he said she was wrong. That’s what one does if they are sane and rational in their political discourse.
What was really laughable and extremely annoying at the same time was when the author of that diary I linked to up above said this.

As a veteran of the Obamarox vs Obamasux battles at Daily Kos a couple of years ago, I can personally attest to the fact that if – in defense of Obama – anyone EVER said anything about trusting him, pearls were clutched into oblivion as accusations of “blind Obamabot” were screamed from the rafters.

Why pregnant women in Mississippi keep dying

NEW YORK CITY — There’s a quiet medical crisis going on in this country: the number of women dying in childbirth.
The United States is the only advanced economy in the world with a rising maternal mortality rate. Deaths related to childbirth in the United States are nearing the highest rate in a quarter-century. An estimated 18.5 mothers died for every 100,000 births in 2013, compared with 7.2 per 100,000 in 1987. This means a woman giving birth here is twice as likely to die than in Saudi Arabia and three times as likely than in the United Kingdom.
The problem is particularly acute in the South. For instance, Mississippi’s maternal mortality rate, one of the highest in the country, has beenclimbing for more than a decade. From 2010 to 2012, the last measure, an average of nearly 40 women died for every 100,000 births. Risk varied drastically by race: The rate for black women, 54.7, was much higher than the rate for white women, 29.3.
Common causes for maternal death include heavy bleeding, high blood pressure and obstructed labor. But nearly half of related deaths in the country each year are preventable, said Priya Agrawal, executive director of Merck for Mothers. Oftentimes, women lack access to regular check-ups. In other words: They’re entering pregnancies unhealthier.
“The U.S. maternal health community doesn’t know exactly why,” Agrawal said. A number of factors may exacerbate the problem, which she called a human rights crisis.
Mississippi, for example, did not expand Medicaid, leaving 107,000 people — nearly half of whom are women — with no insurance options at all,according to the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. It also has the country’s lowest physician-to-resident ratios: 159.4 doctors for every 100,000 people. Some health advocates say racial discrimination may play a role in poor care for pregnant women. And doctors sometimes mistake a pregnant woman’s distress for nerves or paranoia.

My name is rikyrah, and when it comes to shopping, I’m pretty easy to deal with….UNTIL, I believe you’re trying to scam me. Then, I become the customer from hell.
I’ve told you about my 8-track phone. I made the decision yesterday that I was going to enter this decade, cellphone-wise. So, I go onto the website of my cellphone carrier, and I look up phones in the price range I’m willing to spend. I go to the store, they have the cards on the shelf – you’re supposed to get the card, give it to the employee, and they bring you the phone. Well, the one I wanted wasn’t in. I was like, Ok, it was my first choice, but I’ll take the one a few bucks more expensive. Turns out that one wasn’t there either, so, I’m like, ok, I’ll take the one a little less expensive…didn’t look like the one I wanted, but I would adapt. The employee has the nerve to tell me THAT one was out too. The only ones available BEGIN at 2.5x the price of the original phone I wanted. I was like HELL NO, I’m not buying that.
I’m like, then why do you have the cards hanging here, like you have supplies in this store? This is nothing but a scam and a fraud. He has the nerve to smirk at me and ask if I want to see the manager. I was like, yep. So, I stand there, and wait for the manager. Manager gets there, and I’m like, why are perpetrating this scam and fraud on customers. You have the cards hanging there, like they are available, when none of the options are available. You’re trying to scam and fraud people into buying that more expensive nonsense, and I’m not having it. I expect you to find the phone that I wanted, and get it to this store.
He goes into the computer and says, it would take until Tuesday to get it to their store, but I could go to this other store, which is only 10 minutes away and they have it in stock. I was like, how come HE – the other employee, couldn’t do what you just did, instead of trying to sell me something 2.5x MORE than what I wanted to spend?
Shook my head in disgust and just left the store.
Just ordered the phone I wanted online, and will pick it up tomorrow at that other store.
Sigh.
HA! These fools thought you were some stupid fool, Rikyrah. The fact is businesses do this ALL THE TIME. They count on folks not being AWARE.

California: Union to Shut Down Ports to Protest Police Brutality
In California, the local chapter of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union has vowed to shut down ports on May 1 in a historic protest against police brutality. In a statement, the union said, “It is fitting that on May Day, International Workers Day, Bay Area ports will be shut down to protest the racist police killing of mainly black and brown people.” It’s the first time a union has taken such action. In 2008, the same union chapter shut down Pacific Coast ports to demand an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Running While Black”: Protests Swell over Death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore Police Custody
The Department of Justice is now investigating Gray’s death for possible civil rights violations. Since 2011, Baltimore has paid roughly $6.3 million to settle police misconduct claims. Baltimore authorities say five of the six officers involved in the arrest of Gray have now given statements to the Baltimore police. One has not. They remain suspended with pay. Baltimore police union attorney Michael Davey told reporters the officers were right to chase Gray after he ran away when a lieutenant “made eye contact” with him.
MICHAEL DAVEY: They pursued Mr. Gray. They detained him for an investigative stop. Had he not had a knife or an illegal weapon on him, he would have been released. They know what role they played in the arrest of Mr. Gray. What we don’t know and what we’re hoping the investigation will tell us is what happened inside the back of the van. He was placed in the transport van. Whether he was seat-belted in, I don’t believe he was. Our position is: Something happened in that van; we just don’t know what.
REPORTER: Do you think any of the six officers committed a crime that day?
MICHAEL DAVEY: No.
REPORTER: Unequivocally. And what makes you say that?
MICHAEL DAVEY: Based on the information that I know, no.

“Our position is: Something happened in that van; we just don’t know what.”
That’s there “position” which means, “this is the lie we’re going to tell and we’re going to stick with it.” Well, what happened inside of that van is obvious. Freddie Gray was dying from a fatal injury inflicted during when the cops took him down. The witness on the video is screaming at the cops that “his leg is broken,” but we know that it was his neck and he was already paralyzed, totally unable to move on his own volition. So, what could have possibly happened in the van except that Freddie Gray was dying a slow, tortured, and horrible death? Who knows what the cops were doing all that time in the van, but if they try to sell a story that Freddie Gray fought them which is probably where they are going with this, then this will be one of the most egregious cop lies ever told.
How do these people sleep at night? They have families? Children? People who love them? It defies my imagination. They are nothing but evil.
We all know that putting Freddie WAS the cover-up.
They knew he was seriously injured BEFORE they put him in the van. They knew they could put him in the van and then blame the van.
Have you noticed they have still not released the interior van video that they say exists.
I hit like instead of reply to correct the first sentence. Should read:

Yeah, those cops knew he couldn’t walk or move and they knew they had a problem. But if they think they can convince any reasonable person that Freddie Gray could put up a fight, they must be out of their minds. But the phat phuck cop union attorney appears to be going there. Well, what he’s going for is reasonable doubt, but I really don’t think that’s possible. This needs to be tried at the federal level. If AG Loretta Lynch wants a perfect, winnable case, this is it.
And the other possibility that he went into the van without a broken a neck, had a medical emergency inside the van not caused by the cops, and ended up in the hospital with a broken neck and severed spine is so ludicrous that it’s hard to believe they are even considering that as a possibility for reasonable doubt. No one could look at that video and agree with such lunacy except another cop or cop lawyer.
Those police are such babies…chickens bah…bah bah bah bah!
Give them tricycles, water squirt guns, and pacifiers to suck on to keep down their aggressiveness.
Liza, these folks are trying to tell us that we live in Wonderland, and that what we know, see, hear, and are is not real.

The Clinton family’s charities are refiling at least five annual tax returns after an investigation by Reuters found errors in how they reported donations from governments. Reuters found for three years in a row beginning in 2010, the Clinton Foundation reported to the IRS that it received zero dollars in funds from governments. But several foreign governments actually continued to donate tens of millions of dollars to the foundation. Meanwhile, another report has raised questions about the Clinton Foundation’s connection to the Russian takeover of a Canadian uranium mining firm. According to a New York Times report based in part on a forthcoming book called “Clinton Cash” by Peter Schweizer, the State Department, then led by Hillary Clinton, gave its approval to a deal which granted the Russians control of one-fifth of uranium production capacity in the United States. Amid the takeover by the company which became known as Uranium One, the Clinton Foundation received donations of over $2 million from the firm’s chairman.

Oh no! Tragic news from Nepal. A 7.8 earthquake! Saying prayers for all. The old historic district was hard hit and there was a huge avalanche on Mt. Everest injuring many hikers and killing two. The quake was felt as far away as New Delhi.
