White Baltimore Gets Troops, Black Baltimore Gets Same Old Cops

Politicians and reporters say last night was a success. The residents of Sandtown, where Freddie Gray died, know better.

BALTIMORE — When Elijah Cummings’s calm baritone came through a police bullhorn Tuesday night urging Baltimore residents to abide by a curfew and head home, young men in the street responded, “Fuck you!”

Cummings, a congressman and a stalwart of Baltimore’s black community generally seen as representative of the progress made by the 1960s civil rights movement, was viewed by some Tuesday night as just another agent of the state. Those same people were the ones who wrapped their faces in bandanas and defied a curfew, causing police to resort to pepper balls and tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Governor Larry Hogan even declared: “We’ve turned a corner,” before adding it’s not over.

Eyewitnesses: The Baltimore Riots Didn’t Start the Way You Think

Baltimore teachers and parents tell a different story from the one you’ve been reading in the media.

—By Sam Brodey and Jenna McLaughlin
    | Tue Apr. 28, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

After Baltimore police and a crowd of teens clashed near the Mondawmin Mall in northwest Baltimore on Monday afternoon, news reports described the violence as a riot triggered by kids who had been itching for a fight all day. But in interviews with Mother Jones and other media outlets, teachers and parents maintain that police actions inflamed a tense-but-stable situation.

The funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died in police custody this month, had ended hours earlier at a nearby church. According to the Baltimore Sun, a call to “purge”—a reference to the 2013 dystopian film in which all crime is made legal for one night—circulated on social media among school-aged Baltimoreans that morning. The rumored plan—which was not traced to any specific person or group—was to assemble at the Mondawmin Mall at 3:00 p.m. and proceed down Pennsylvania Avenue toward downtown Baltimore.

The Baltimore police department, which was aware of the “purge” call, prepared for the worst. Shortly before noon, the department issued a statement saying it had “received credible information that members of various gangs…have entered into a partnership to ‘take-out’ law enforcement officers.

You’d Be Surprised WHO The OUTSIDE AGITATORS In Baltimore REALLY ARE

While the Baltimore Police Department recruits its manpower outside city limits, its leadership is regularly junketed to training tours in Israel, the occupying power whose hyper-militarized settlers act as some of the Middle East’s most aggressive outside agitators. In September 2009, members of the Baltimore PD “toured and met with their Israeli counterparts to exchange information relating to best practices and recent advancements in security and counterterrorism,” according to the trip’s sponsor, Project Interchange.

A separate Israel tour organized by the neoconservative Jewish Institute for National Security saw members of the Baltimore PD “begin the process of sharing ‘lessons learned’ in Israel with their law enforcement colleagues in the United States.” Back in Maryland, the rate of citizens killed by police officers is skyrocketing. A report by the ACLU has found that 109 people died after encounters with Maryland police between 2010 and 2014, that almost 70 percent of those who died were black, and that over 40 percent of them were unarmed. In Baltimore alone, the city was forced to pay $5.7 million in lawsuits by suspects who accused police officers of beating them brutally and without cause.

    THANK YOU WARN!

Dear White America: Please Stop Talking About Martin Luther King Jr., ‘Non-Violence’, and the Baltimore ‘Riots’

Freddie Gray was killed by Baltimore’s police. Baltimore’s ghetto youthocracy responded with protests and an exhalation of random street violence. The killing of Freddie Gray, an unarmed black man who was a victim of racial profiling and harassment by police, is the proximate cause of Baltimore’s “riot”.

The deeper and more substantive causes of Baltimore’s violent spasm (and Ferguson and other sites as well) are long simmering grievances and righteous anger at an American police establishment that is racist towards black Americans, and a society where its supposed “meritocracy” is broken by the colorline and class inequality.

The United States may have a black man who happens to be President; racial equality, justice, and the radically democratic transformative possibilities that Obama symbolized seven years ago have not been translated into substantive improvements in the life chances for people of color more generally, or the black and brown poor in particular.

There is a ritual that accompanies these moments of protest by black Americans, and the wholly predictable urban unrest that follows the repeated killings of unarmed black people by police.

    A Message to Whitey
Posted by: Helen Philpot | April 28, 2015- Margret & Helen

Margaret – I had assumed if I wrote again, it would mostly likely be about Hillary. But watching all this violence in Baltimore unfolding on the television moves me to write this instead. Normally I would tell you that when it comes to racial issues, an old white woman from Georgia probably should keep her mouth shut and her opinion to herself. In fact, that’s probably a good idea for white people everywhere because we really probably will just say a whole lot of stupid if we open our mouths right now. But you know me, I have never known when to just shut up…

    HERE IS MY WHITE STORY:

About 60 years ago my husband and I scraped together every penny we had to buy a small but lovely home in a safe neighborhood with good schools. Our children had a lovely childhood. They got a good education and always knew that going to college was an achievable goal. The worst thing that ever happened in our neighborhood was a bad divorce or a scandalous affair. Murders and robberies happened across town. And when that happened we spoke of it in hushed tones as we smoked fancy cigarettes and drank iced tea on the back porch. Our children all graduated from college, married and had families of their own. Our grandchildren are repeating the cycle and we even have some great-grandchildren who will continue to do well long after I am dead and gone.

HERE COULD HAVE BEEN MY STORY IF I WAS A BLACK WOMAN:

About 60 years ago my husband and I would have tried to scrape together enough money to buy a small but lovely home in a safe neighborhood with good schools. Unfortunately the banks would not give us funding and the neighborhood we wanted was restricted anyway. Our children would never truly feel the American dream was about them. The schools they attended would be poorly funded and under-achieving in every way. As hard as I tried to hide it from them, they would know that a life of crime, drugs and violence was a real possibility and it probably would pay better than any job they could get. Fearing authority would come more easily than trusting it. Some of them might overcome the odds but more than likely they w0uld repeat a life of near poverty and almost but not quites… College would be possible but nearly twice as many of their white friends would see that happen rather than their black friends. They would have been called the n-word in various forms many times in their life and they would know that 1 in every 15 African American men are incarcerated in comparison to 1 in every 106 white men. When my family eventually celebrated the election of the first black President… we would have done so knowing he might be the last for many years to come. My grandchildren and great-grandchildren might fare slightly better, but only slightly and only if they were very lucky.

Activist smacks down Wolf Blitzer: ‘You are suggesting broken windows are worse than broken spines’

McKesson agreed that the property damage in Baltimore on Monday night had been unfortunate, but he urged Blitzer to remember that there had been “many days of peaceful protests here in Baltimore City and places all around the country.”

“But at least 15 police officers have been hurt, 200 arrests, 144 vehicle fires — these are statistics,” Blitzer countered, robotically reading a police press release. “There’s no excuse for that kind of violence, right?”

“Yeah, and there’s no excuse for the seven people that the Baltimore City Police Department has killed in the last year either, right?” McKesson shot back.

“We’re not making comparisons,” Blitzer stuttered. “Obviously, we don’t want anybody hurt. But I just want to hear you say that there should be peaceful protests, not violent protests in the tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King.”

TOTALLY SCRIPTED FOR WOLF BLITZER to get McKesson to respond so that CNN can run it on a continuous LOOP!

“Yeah, there’s should be peaceful protests,” the community organizer replied. “And I don’t have to condone it to understand it, right? The pain that people feel is real.”

“And you are making a comparison,” McKesson added. “You are suggesting this idea that broken windows are worse than broken spines, right?”

    from the comments at DavidSimon.com:

We don’t need 10,000 protestors in the streets of Baltimore or Ferguson. What we need are 100 lawyers in Palm Beach, Florida building a case for a billion dollar suit for all the police violence and civil rights violations. And something similar in Ferguson, and for those abused at Rikers in New York.

Bankrupt a couple of municipalities. Make it cost so much to continue to employ vicious, trigger happy, violent police any mayor would be insane to allow his police force to shoot unarmed children and beat middle age men bloody.

We don’t need Gandhi. We need about 500 of the meanest, most aggressive, meticulous lawyers that have ever walked the earth in every city where this crap is going on.

Make the taxpayers feel the pain for their out of control SWAT and drug units and I guarantee you it will stop.

I have to say this. Clearly the reason why we have these issues in our communities is due to biases, racism, and blatant neglect. The institutions in America have failed many communities of color. But I also have to say that the failure of Black leadership or should I say Non-leadership is very distressing. It seems like our communities are just reacting to one crises and then the next without a long term plan and solution. Where is the economic plan that should have been put in motion after the Civil Rights Movement ? Martin Luther King was transitioning to economics because he knew that having basic rights is good thing, but in order to truly have power and hope you have to have economic opportunity.

The fact that we’re talking about communities that are still devastated after the 1968 riots is and indictment across the board. The black leaders who have been in Congress since the late 60’s and 70’s have failed, the local black leaders that have dominated cities like Baltimore have failed, the black preachers (who are only concerned with making money over helping their communities) have failed. Where is the long term economic plan ? Where is the plan to come together to increase opportunities for young black boys and girls ? We faced greater adversity pre Civil Rights and still did great things like owning businesses, educating our children, producing educators, scientists, lawyers, doctors, etc. We have more wealthy blacks today then we did then but why aren’t we seeing these black folk put their money and resources together to create a plan of action for these communities ? We can protest till the cows come home but until we see some concrete actions nothing will change. And to those people who want to blame President Obama these problems have existed way before he became President and one man can’t fix long term systemic problems. I want our people to be more strategic.

Rand Paul: Baltimore Violence Is About ‘Lack Of Fathers’ And Morals
    PublishedAPRIL 28, 2015, 11:25 AM EDT

Presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) weighed in on the turmoil in Baltimore on Tuesday, standing with police and blaming the violence on a lack of morals in America.

“I came through the train on Baltimore (sic) last night, I’m glad the train didn’t stop,” he said, laughing, during an interview with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.

Railing against what he repeatedly called “thuggery and thievery” in the streets of Baltimore, Paul told Ingraham that talking about “root causes” was not appropriate in the middle of a riot.

“The police have to do what they have to do, and I am very sympathetic to the plight of the police in this,” he said.

As far as root causes, Paul listed some ideas of his own.

“There are so many things we can talk about,” the senator said, “the breakdown of the family structure, the lack of fathers, the lack of a moral code in our society.”

He added that “this isn’t just a racial thing.”

Paul, who has branded himself as an advocate of criminal justice reform, also said justice must come from an investigation of the case of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of a spinal injury while in the custody of Baltimore police.

I understand that walking the line between calling for police accountability and supporting the constituents who voted for you is a tough spot, especially considering how New York City Mayor DeBlasio was treated by NYPD after Officer Daniel Pantaleo killed Eric Garner on camera and didn’t receive any punishment but this is the job.

But you need to do better, Rawlings-Blake, because, right now, you look like the woman who is protecting the people who are killing your voters. Like Malcolm X once said, “If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

    “This Ain’t About Freddie Gray.”

“It’s from years and years of taking shit,” said Martin, a longtime resident and a cook at a nearby soul food restaurant. “Now we’re at a point where people just don’t give a fuck.”

This hopelessness — expressed by many young protesters in Baltimore — arose from frustration with a system that they believe has consigned them to police brutality, poverty and even poorer prospects. The streets were filled with children Monday, many of them fresh out of school and itching for a fight with police. By 4 p.m., around the time schools let out for the day, people were hustling out of office buildings and stores and restaurants were closing their doors to customers.”
