TLC is an American girl group whose repertoire spans R&B, hip hop,pop,[1][2] funk and new jack swing. TLC originally comprised singer Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, rapper Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes (until her death in 2002) and singer Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. The group was very successful in the 1990s and early 2000s in spite of numerous spats with the law, each other, and the group’s record label and management.
Billboard magazine ranked TLC as one of the greatest musical trios.[3] Between 1990 and 2002, the group had ten Top 10 US singles, four of which went to number one; four multi-platinum albums; and won five Grammys.[4] At the end of 1999, TLC was ranked as the seventh most successful act of the 1990s by Billboard. Treme and The Odd Couple’s Wendell Pierce has been tapped to play the Supreme Court justice in Confirmation, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The city of Baltimore, Maryland, has been besieged by riots Monday night — and police are on the scene ready to serve, protect and subdue.
This has become an evergreen narrative in the aftermath of reactions to state-sanctioned violence against black people. But that it persists sends a troubling message about how officials and, by extension, many of the people they serve regard rioting: specifically, when there’s white people involved versus mostly black people.
Usually, if a riot involves black people, it’s connected to intense episodes of where systemic racism is undoubtedly at work. These episodes include the 1992 Los Angeles riots after the Rodney King beating verdict, the riots in Oakland after the 2009 BART Police shooting of Oscar Grant, and the national outcry immediately following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. That outcry included the city of Baltimore, where blacks now represent roughly 2 out of 3 residents.

HBO Documentary Tales of the Grim Sleeper Uncovers the Slayings of Over 100 Black Women in South Central Los Angeles
One woman who escaped the “Grim Sleeper” discusses how her street sense saved her life.

When you think of serial killers, names like John Wayne Gacy and Jeffery Dahmer are usually the first to pop into people’s heads. But on Monday night, an HBO documentary attempts to add another name to that list: Lonnie Franklin Jr.
Most have probably never heard of Franklin, but he is the subject of the HBO documentary Tales of the Grim Sleeper, which alleges that for over 25 years, Franklin was involved in over 100 slayings of black women in the area of South Central Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department turned a blind eye to these killings, according to the documentary, even though the evidence was alarming: from eyewitnesses to sketches and even a description of Franklin’s car.
If it was not for the due diligence of neighborhood activists Margaret Prescod and Nana Gyamfi of the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders, Franklin would probably still be on the streets. Instead, Franklin was arrested in July 2010 and is finally headed to court this summer.
Tales of the Grim Sleeper’s director Nick Broomfield took to the streets of South Central and interviewed those who knew Franklin best. From his “running partners” to people who did “business” with him, but the most provocative person featured in the documentary is Pam Brooks, a former sex worker and drug addict who said she had a run-in with Franklin.

See this shit right here. They always want us to praise the cops but the last time I saw a real cop solve a crime was on tv. It’s almost always because of the citizens that people are found or arrested. The only way they solve crimes is from getting support from the very community they seem to treat as enemies.

Here’s a little fuel to the fire of those of you who want to complain about our beloved FYWP. This person/company from Finland found a pretty serious bug that they’ve been trying to tell the maintainers of WordPress about for months. They were ignored. So, yesterday, they released it as a “zero day” – in other words, they told the world how to hack a WordPress site using the bug they found. Oddly enough, the WordPress maintainers then issued a patch. I just patched Balloon Juice, only after working around another WordPress bug. So, PSA for those of you who run a WordPress site that fails to update: Patricia BT’s comment in this thread has the little fix I used to make it work here.

Eduardo Lopez, 22, has not caught many breaks in his young life. If anything, that’s made him more determined to succeed.
The all-star soccer player wants to finish college, he wants to be a firefighter, and he wants to help get his family out of the hole it’s been in from the day he was born.
That means he’s always on the go, and on a recent morning, Lopez was really in a hurry. He had worked a minimum-wage graveyard shift loading pallets for an export company near LAX, then jumped a Green Line train and transferred to the Blue Line.
At the Metro station downtown, he hustled up to street level and saw his bus approaching 7th and Hope streets. If he caught it, he’d make it to his first class at Glendale Community College on time. He hadn’t slept in 24 hours, but he had to get to school.
No problem, he thought. The “don’t walk” sign was blinking. The countdown was at 10 seconds, as he recalls, giving him plenty of time.
My colleague, reporter Catherine Saillant, happened to be there that day. You may have seen her story about the thousands of crosswalk citations police have written in downtown Los Angeles, where the population has exploded in recent years, creating a fish-in-a-barrel opportunity for cops.
Saillant watched a motorcycle officer zoom across the intersection and write Lopez a ticket for violating Section 21456(b) of the California Vehicle Code, which says you can’t begin to cross the street once the “do not cross” sign begins flashing.
In four years, Saillant reported, 17,075 people had been cited for the same infraction in the downtown sector, or four times as many as any other area over that period.
So, finally, we’ve got a thriving downtown with thousands of people on foot in a car-choked city, and instead of celebrating that, we’re penalizing it?
Yeah, sure, police have to keep traffic flowing and prevent vehicle-pedestrian accidents and deaths. But where’s the overzealous enforcement when it comes to going after the countless drivers who selfishly clog intersections, creeping out and then turning long after a light has turned red?

The White House has awarded the greater St. Louis area — including the beleaguered city of Ferguson — a special designation that will allow it greater access to federal grants.
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro announced Tuesday that the “promise zone” award would be given to greater St. Louis and five other urban areas, chosen among more that 123 entrants from around the country. The St. Louis area will now receive preferential treatment in applying for programs and grants from 12 federal agencies.

Republicans in the Florida Legislature have met the enemy, and it is them.
They can’t agree on using federal money for people with no health care and as a result, budget negotiations are in disarray in a year with a $1 billion surplus. Unable to resolve their differences after months of refusing to compromise, Republican lawmakers will end the regular session next Friday without completing the one task they are required to do: passing a state budget.
The government of the nation’s third-largest state is controlled by one party, yet the standoff is Republican against Republican, in some cases involving members of the same family. House Republicans have been distracted by a leadership coup while Gov. Rick Scott is personally threatening to veto Republican senators’ bills and spending items unless they approve his tax cuts of $673 million.

Sen. Grassley: No Need To Fix Voting Rights Act Since ‘More Minorities Are Already Voting’

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said Monday he doesn’t expect to bring up legislation to restore the Voting Rights Act, because lots of minority people are already voting.
During an event at the National Press Club, Grassley was asked about the committee considering a bill that would fix the landmark 1965 law. The Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the law in 2013, ruling that it needed to be updated. The section determined which states and localities with a history of suppressing minority voters had to get permission from the Justice Department to change their voting laws. The justices instructed Congress to come up with a new formula for designating which regions of the country warrant special scrutiny.
Grassley dismissed the idea that there’s a need to act.

Top Senate Republican rejects call for voting-rights fix

It was just last month when much of the nation’s attention turned to Selma, Alabama, where Americans saw former President George W. Bush stand and applaud a call for Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act with a bipartisan bill. Many wondered if, maybe sometime soon, Congress’ Republican majority might agree to tackle the issue.
Voting-rights advocates probably shouldn’t hold their breath. Soon after the event honoring those who marched at the Edmund Pettus Bridge a half-century ago, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) dismissed the very idea of working on the issue. “I think Eric Holder and this administration have trumped up and created an issue where there really isn’t one,” the Texas Republican said.
Asked if Congress should repair the Voting Rights Act formula struck down by the Supreme Court, Cornyn replied, simply, “No.”
Yesterday at the National Press Club, another key GOP senator echoed the sentiment.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said Monday he doesn’t expect to bring up legislation to restore the Voting Rights Act, because lots of minority people are already voting. […]
“It depends on what you want to fix,” he said. “If you want to fix more minorities voting, more minorities are already voting.”
The Iowa Republican said the “original intent” of the Voting Rights Act is no longer applicable because “in the last 50 years, it’s made great progress.”
As a factual matter, it’s true that lots of voters from minority communities vote. It’s also true that the nation has made “great progress” as compared to a half-century ago.
But given every relevant detail, Grassley’s posture is tough to defend.

GOP sees Cotton sabotage strategy as ‘an educational effort’

It was about a month ago when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) started publicly warning U.S. negotiating partners around the world about climate negotiations. Foreign nations should “proceed with caution,” the Republican senator said, before reaching an agreement with the United States about reducing carbon emissions – President Obama may say we’ll reach our goals, McConnell said, but the world should be skeptical of America’s word.
As we talked about at the time, it’s become a familiar gambit for GOP senators. Just a couple of weeks earlier, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and 46 of his Republican pals also publicly warned a foreign nation not to consider the United States trustworthy in the context of an entirely different set of international diplomatic negotiations.
When McConnell duplicated the strategy on climate, a Sierra Club official said McConnell had effectively “stolen Tom Cotton’s playbook for undermining American leadership in the face of international crises.”
But it’s not just McConnell. The Wall Street Journal reported today:
President Barack Obama and Congress are headed for another power clash on the international stage, as key Senate Republicans challenge his efforts to forge a global pact on climate change.
The White House considers the agreement with nearly 200 nations a historic opportunity to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions world-wide. But some GOP senators view it as executive overreach, and they are quietly considering ways to warn other countries that the president doesn’t speak for them and may not be able to deliver on his promises to slash emissions.
Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), one of the nation’s most aggressive climate deniers and the man Senate Republicans chose to lead the Senate committee on environmental policy, wasn’t subtle when describing his sabotage ambitions.
“The Tom Cotton letter was an educational effort,” Senator Snowball told the WSJ.

I am very concerned about the political apparatus behind the massive overreaction in Baltimore as well as Ferguson and Detroit. The Republican Party and its billionaire puppet masters are thrilled to create an atmosphere of fear among white voters. They are creating the groundwork for a Republican presidential candidate to step forward as a law and order candidate. I have already heard nervous people saying, “we NEED a Republican president,” as if being Republican, heartless, ruthless and prone to act first and think later would solve all their media hyped up anxieties. They are also loving the idea of sticking it in the eye of our first Black President because it is his fault that people are protesting against injustice. Watch this tough guy, law and order theme emerge in the coming days among Republican candidates. I truly fear that we’re being set up and only very well organized political push back is going to save us from monumental disaster in 2016.
I can definitely hope this project comes to fruition.
