Mary Christine Brockert (March 5, 1956 – December 26, 2010), better known by her stage name Teena Marie, was an American singer, songwriter, and producer. She was known by her childhood nickname Tina[1] before taking the stage name Teena Marie; she later acquired the nickname of Lady Tee (sometimes spelled Lady T), given to her by collaborator and friend, Rick James.

Biker Gangs, Tamir Rice, And The Rise Of White Fragility

Recently released records show that Cleveland Police would have wanted to charge 12-year-old Tamir Rice with inducing panic and being an “aggravated menace.” He was shot and killed by an officer in less than two seconds while playing in the park with a toy gun. This development is juxtaposed with the news that a violent biker gang in Waco, Texas shot up a restaurant parking lot. Nine biker gang members were killed. Police arrested 170 gang members, and confiscated countless weapons. Apparently those 170 weren’t an aggravated menace worthy of immediate death.
Tamir Rice was an African American, while the biker gangs were not.
This scenario has repeated itself too many times to be coincidence. An 8-year-old child shot and killed by officers while she slept, a 17-year-old killed by police in his own home, a 22-year-old immediately shot and killed in a Wal-Mart, and many more cases of unarmed African Americans immediately getting shot down and labeled as menaces. While on the other side of reality, the Aurora shooter, Timothy McVeigh, and many other armed mass killers were arrested without a scratch on them.
The most dangerous uprising that’s threatening America’s stability isn’t black protests in places like Ferguson or Baltimore. It’s taking place among an aging white majority that is losing its bearing on reality and destroying the gears of government, media and public welfare. At its center is an inexplicable, illogical and dangerous fear that some sociologists are now defining as white fragility.
I have witnessed this strange phenomenon intensifying over the last several years, but I first became aware of it immediately after the election of Barack Obama.
On the Wednesday after the 2008 election, I drove from Cleveland to Columbus to catch an afternoon flight back to New York City. Out of curiosity I scanned the AM dials until I found a few conservative political talk shows. The sustained and palpable panic was amusing at first, then outrageously funny, before settling into deeply disconcerting. Despite the fact that virtually every poll had shown Obama as the predicted winner for weeks, the election results felt like a political Pearl Harbor for some.

For fans, the thrill was gone along with their idol. On Friday, the body of blues legend King will lie in state as hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of fans file past the casket to pay their respects.
In his two decades in the business, mortuary manager Matthew Phillips has taken part in services for state politicians, while another Palm Mortuary branch in Las Vegas hosted the viewing for actor Tony Curtis.
But Matthews has never seen anything like this.
“B.B. King’s death has made me realize just what a cultural icon he was to the entire nation, not just the music business,” he said, sitting inside the mortuary in a crisp suit. “It’s an honor to play a role in his final journey home.”
King, a sharecropper’s son dubbed the “King of the Blues” who named his favorite guitar Lucille, died May 14 from complications associated with his long battle with Type 2 diabetes. He had lived in Las Vegas for several years before his death at age 89.
From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, fans will be allowed to view the open casket before a private family funeral planned for Saturday at a nearby Palm chapel. King’s body then will be flown to Mississippi, where burial services are planned for next week in Indianola on the grounds of the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center there.

I like listening to AG Lynch and that isn’t something I can say about many folks. She does have excellent public speaking skills without sounding over trained. She also knows what she’s talking about, the lady is brilliant. When she’s interviewed, she is patient and kind and comes across as honest but also diplomatic.
Because her tenure is going to be so short, I don’t think we are going to get to see what she is truly capable of accomplishing. She has to set priorities and focus on what she thinks is going to have the strongest impact for the time she serves. This is unfortunate, in several ways because she seems to be just the right choice for the times and it would be great if she had four years. But I’m also afraid that none of these criminal cops are going to be prosecuted by the DOJ. We’ll see, I guess, but I’ve just about given up hope.
Under a Democratic president, she could end up on the Supreme Court, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.

I remember when I had a part time job at Sears years and years ago and was teaching high school during the day, a white female came into the department where I was working. We were having a conversation, and I properly pronounced a word, and she complemented me. I was wondering to myself, “WTF is wrong with her?” There have been well-educated blacks in America for generations and generations. I didn’t tell her that I had graduated from the University of GA in three years because it would have blown her mind. I also remember when one of the managers at Sears got the bright idea to train some of us to become department managers. There were about 12 of us. Lord, I thought he was going to have a stroke when I was the only one in the entire group to pass the test and receive a diploma for it. Some of the whites in the group thought I’d cheated. I didn’t. The course material was very easy, something I’d studied in high school. You could have, as my dearly departed mom would have said, “Knocked them over with a feather!” I know for a fact that one of the reasons so many republicans (and some alleged liberals) hate PBO is because they fear his intellect, and that of our FL Michelle, too. Just because they don’t know well-educated black persons live in America doesn’t mean we don’t exist, it just means they need to expand their circle of social involvement!!!

Even if the domestic violence allegations are proven false, O’Reilly’s divorce saga still reflects that O’Reilly is hypocritical in his analysis of unmarried Black families. In the past year alone, he has accused Black communities of allowing 9-year olds to do drugs2 and embracing pathological patterns of violence, and even claimed that “the reason there is so much violence and chaos in the Black precincts is the disintegration of the African-American family.”3
With such an influential platform, O’Reilly’s relentless attacks, biases, and harmful mistruths about Black families cannot be tolerated. Sunday, April 12, 2015My son and my wife were at a playground in Dupont Circle yesterday. Dupont Circle is an affluent, gay-friendly part of the city, and this particular playground is a reflection of that environment. It isn’t unusual to see two moms or two dads at the playground, and it isn’t unusual to see a wide variety of nationalities playing together. It is however very unusual to see black or brown babies playing on these playgrounds. I don’t make the rules, that’s simply how it is.
So yesterday, my son Nyles was playing a non-brown/black kid and the following conversation went down:
The kid: Come here boy
Nyles: My name is Nyles
The kid” Come here boy
Nyles: No, my name is Nyles
After my son’s second name declaration, the kids went to play together sans incident..for the most part. My wife later told me that in an unrelated incident, my son pushed this other little kid, but quickly apologized, and they resumed playing. But that part is irrelevant to me right now.
I seriously doubt that kid–who had to have been around three or four years old–was intentionally trying to talk down to my son in a condescending, racially-tinged way. I also seriously doubt that my son meant to be militant by ignoring the boy and telling this kid who the hell he was. Kids at that age get the benefit of the doubt. They are learning all things gender related, and they enjoy pointing out who is a boy and who is a girl, and sometimes that happens with common, not proper nouns. But I did find it interesting that this kid’s dad, who my wife told me was within earshot, did coach his kid in the moment, and tell him that wasn’t cool. If I heard Nyles referring to another kid by simply “girl” or “boy”, I would coach him up and tell him that wasn’t polite–especially if he said “boy”. And when he gets a little older, I will give him a mini-history lesson on why that word (among others) has historically been offensive to black and brown folks.
I don’t know if these lessons are taught in other households, but it sure as hell would help nip some injustices in the bud earlier rather than later. You don’t have to be a bleeding heart liberal to teach your kids a little history so they know right from wrong. Then again, you have to actually know this history to be able to teach it right? I’m rambling…but there’s a smart point somewhere in this entry I hope.

It’s a delicate balance, I find with this. Because it has been my experience that KIDS Learn what they live and live what they learn.

This seems to indicate that this wasn’t learned from the parents and that’s a good thing. But that makes me curious where it was learned and how did such a little boy pick up on it, remember it, and later use it. Children absorb things so easily. But, yes, I agree that the primary responsibility for reversing this damage falls on the parents. In this case, a history lesson would be helpful for an older child perhaps, but this is also about teaching children how to interact with other people, a necessary skill.
I like the response, “My name is Nyles.” The next time someone calls me “sweetheart” in a condescending way, maybe I should say, “My name is Elizabeth.”

My daughter & son-in-law are very skilled at parenthood.
Lord knows I tried to teach my daughter the necessary skills to navigate this world. And one of the things I always told them is to hold firm to being addressed by your NAME, especially in business environment and with folks who are not in your immediate inner circle.

Neither one of them suffer fools lightly and will always give folks the benefit of the doubt.
The racial micro-aggressions do add up over time, and can do major damage.
Micro-aggressions are supposedly unintentional, but I just don’t believe that’s true. It could only be true if we assume that people never think about what they are saying to another person and are incapable of gauging that person’s reaction. Sooner or later the perpetrator is bound to see the flinch, or the hurt, or the displeasure. I may be a cynical old b!!tch but I believe that repeat offenders do see it and they enjoy it. It seems minor, so most people let it go, but they do add up over time, as you say.
I believe they are ingrained, and unconsciously they rear their ugly head. That’s why I check it stat. No apologies, no excuses. Just stop it in it’s tracks.
I was shopping at my favorite grocery store, Aldi, a month ago, and when I got to the cash register, this young white girl called me, “Sweetheart,” and it offended me. I took the time to inform her that I do not like being called, “Sweetheart,” and in the future, I’d like to be addressed as either “Ma’am, or “Ms. Robinson.” You should have seen the look on her face. She was being lazy by not wanting to learn the names of customers like myself who are in the store at least two-three times each week. I’m not her “Sweetheart.” And, besides, I’m old school, and somewhat prefer formal to casual when it comes to younger persons addressing older persons. It was the way my parents raise me. I would not have been permitted to call one of my parents’ friends “Sweetheart.” It was either “Mr. X” or Mrs Y.” or “Ms. Susie” or Mr. John.”
Maybe I don’t remember that age well, but I just don’t think I addressed folks as ‘come here, boy/girl.’

He knows his name, and he will only respond to it. That he stood his ground too makes me smile, Ametia.
The child does get the benefit of the doubt, but a little lesson and home training never hurt anyone.
