    Like other struggling schools, the University of Arizona is raising out-of-state tuition—and courting the affluent students who can afford to pay it.

    On February 25, three University of Arizona graduate students—Kyle Blessinger, Zach Brooks, and Sarah Ann Meggison—had a meeting with Kelli Ward, a Republican state senator in Arizona. They were there to lobby against massive new cuts to state spending on higher education; the number being thrown around was $75 million. Under the state constitution, attending the university is supposed to be as “nearly free as possible,” but due to state budget cuts, tuition had increased more than 70 percent between 2008 and 2013 for in-state students—the severest hike in the country. Now it was poised to go up even more, while funds for graduate instructors were likely to be squeezed even further.

    Blessinger, a 28-year-old Air Force veteran, was particularly concerned. He’d used up his GI benefits for his undergraduate education, and with a year left before he finishes his MA in higher education, he already carries $65,000 in student debt. In the past, he had worked as a teaching assistant in two classes, which earned him a tuition waiver—but this semester, because of budget cuts, the school could only afford to give him one. To make ends meet, he was working as a bartender and freelancing as a private security guard, occasionally at parties thrown by affluent undergraduates.

    “I don’t think veterans should necessarily have to work two or three jobs just to be able to afford to live while we’re going to school,” Blessinger says. “I don’t have time to study. Some days, it’s quite tough.”

    A tall man with a nearly clean-shaven head, Blessinger has a doleful, hound-dog expression. His right arm is sleeved with tattoos; among them is an image of his pug, T-Bone, dressed as the Red Baron and flying a fighter plane; he got T-Bone as a therapy animal to help him through a depression while he was enlisted. “Valor” is inked on Blessinger’s right wrist, “Truth” on his left.

    Blessinger says he dreams of a career in education reform, “working with state governments, the federal government, to rewrite policy to make state higher education more accessible and more equitable.” He planned to apply to a joint law and PhD program after finishing his MA—but given his onerous debt, he’s been reconsidering his options.

    The three students thought that Ward, a conservative who is rumored to be considering a primary challenge to Senator John McCain, might be sympathetic to the plight of a struggling veteran. That’s not how the meeting turned out, however. “She actually was pretty rude to him,” recalls Brooks, a fifth-year PhD student in second-language acquisition. According to all three students, Ward called Blessinger “entitled” and told him, “If you don’t like being here, other states have different programs for vets, and maybe you should go there.”

    “She called me an entitled little prick,” says Blessinger, admittedly paraphrasing. “I work three jobs, plus I go to graduate school. I’m not sure how much more biting the bullet she wants me to do.” (Ward, after initially agreeing to talk, didn’t respond to follow-up e-mails.)

    Now it looks like Blessinger will have to bite the bullet even harder. When the legislature finally passed a budget, it didn’t cut $75 million—it cut $99 million, including $28 million from the University of Arizona. Bruce Wheeler, assistant minority leader in Arizona’s House of Representatives, believes that the Republicans would like to do away with public education altogether. “I’m absolutely convinced that’s their agenda,” he says. “At every level of public education, the Republican majority is undertaking to defund and privatize.”

    Why Is Israel Kicking Out the Africans?
    Large numbers of Africans fleeing unstable governments, terrorism and poverty are flooding into Israel and some European nations, and there is one message for them: Go home.

    A few days into an educational trip to Israel in 1991 shortly after the mass airlift of Ethiopian Jews into the country, my jaw dropped when a Jewish official casually described the arrival of the Ethiopians as an opportunity to beef up Israel’s Olympic running team.

    More than two decades later, and it appears that probably didn’t work out. Israel now seems more anxious to give its sizable black African migrant population the boot. At the moment, the focus is much less on settled-in Ethiopian Jews and more so on Sudanese, Eritrean and Ethiopian Christians fleeing war, persecution and poverty at home. And, naturally, if you’re a poor African migrant looking for work, you’re headed to Israel, a top 40 country in terms of gross domestic product and the closest, most powerful, democratic, free market economy you can find within regional distance.

    But now, turn back: because if you’re a black undocumented migrant, Israel is giving you 30 days to get gone. In a bid to put a humane face on it, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is putting money where its racially charged mouth is. An estimated 45,000 Eritrean and Sudanese refugees not only get a free, no-return ticket back home (or to some “unnamed” African nation) but also get sent with $3,500 in their pocket.

    That might not seem like such a bad deal, some might say. After all, what other country (including the United States) deports its undocumented migrants with game-show-like cash offers?

    But throughout the Euro-influenced parts of the Mediterranean, there’s been a discomforting trend of countries like Israel, Italy, France, Spain and others taking extreme military-enhanced measures to keep the Africans out. Part of it (cutting European countries some slack) has to do with an uncontrolled tsunami wave of North African and sub-Saharan African migrants crossing dangerous Mediterranean waters to escape destabilization spreading throughout parts of Africa.

    Libya, with its former despot Muammar Qaddafi deposed by a U.S.-led effort in 2011, is now a bubbling cesspool of factional violence. Terrorism is spreading into the continent, and civil wars remain unresolved in places like Sudan, Mali and elsewhere. Climate change and economic disruption are also spreading resources thin, prompting many Africans to look for lands of milk and honey farther north.

    Gripped in a debilitating debt crisis of its own, Europe is just not having that. The European Union, also fearful that hard-to-detect Islamic State group and al-Qaida operatives will slip in, just asked the United Nations Security Council to authorize a major military-style campaign against seafaring migrant smugglers before they pick up refugees.

    The idea of being black and sexy is practically nonexistent in mainstream TV shows and movies, but the creators of Black&Sexy TV believed that there was an audience for stories that examined black sexuality and relationships when they launched their first Web series, The Number, on YouTube in 2011.

    Of course they were right, and after attracting a huge following with several successful Web shows, Black&Sexy TV is poised for even bigger things with the launch of a premium subscription service and a collaboration with cable titan HBO to develop the Web series The Couple, which debuted in 2012.

    Last week when former President Bill Clinton meandered onto the topic of charter schools, he mentioned something about an “original bargain” that charters were, according to the reporter for The Huffington Post, “supposed to do a better job of educating students.”

    A writer at Salon called the remark “stunning” because it brought to light the fact that the overwhelming majority of charter schools do no better than traditional public schools. Yet, as the Huffington reporter reminded us, charter schools are rarely shuttered for low academic performance.

    But what’s most remarkable about what Clinton said is how little his statement resembles the truth about how charters have become a reality in so many American communities.

    In a real “bargaining process,” those who bear the consequences of the deal have some say-so on the terms, the deal-makers have to represent themselves honestly (or the deal is off and the negotiating ends), and there are measures in place to ensure everyone involved is held accountable after the deal has been struck.

    But that’s not what’s happening in the great charter industry rollout transpiring across the country. Rather than a negotiation over terms, charters are being imposed on communities – either by legislative fiat or well-engineered public policy campaigns. Many charter school operators keep their practices hidden or have been found to be blatantly corrupt. And no one seems to be doing anything to ensure real accountability for these rapidly expanding school operations.

    Instead of the “bargain” political leaders may have thought they struck with seemingly well-intentioned charter entrepreneurs, what has transpired instead looks more like a raw deal for millions of students, their families, and their communities. And what political leaders ought to be doing – rather than spouting unfounded platitudes, as Clinton did, about “what works” – is putting the brakes on a deal gone bad, ensuring those most affected by charter school rollouts are brought to the bargaining table, and completely renegotiating the terms for governing these schools.

    Charter Schools As Takeover Operations

    The “100 percent charter schools” education system in New Orleans that Clinton praised was never presented to the citizens of New Orleans in a negotiation. It was surreptitiously engineered.

    After Katrina, as NPR recently reported, “an ad hoc coalition of elected leaders and nationally known charter advocates formed,” and in “a series of quick decisions,” all school employees were fired and the vast majority of the city’s schools were handed over to a state entity called the “Recovery School District” which is governed by unelected officials. Only a “few elite schools were … allowed to maintain their selective admissions.”

    In other words, any bargaining that was done was behind closed doors and at tables where most of the people who were being affected had no seat.

    How Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche Helped Thousands of Women Out of Debt for Free

    Tiffany Aliche was a teacher before she lost her job during the recession. She ended up in a hole financially but was able to manage to get out of it successfully. She budgeted, she made cuts on things that were not important, and she saved. This year she wanted to help other women who were in the same financial rut as she had been in. She is now known as “The Budgetnista”.

    Aliche created a free online course called the Live Richer Challenge. For five weeks she would have different tasks and challenges for the women who signed up for the course. She ended up with over 11,000 enrollments. Each week there was a new lesson and new challenges set out for the women to complete such as calling their internet company and negotiating a better rate or getting a better interest rate on a credit card or loan. Another week was set aside for learning how to save money. Each woman would share their success for the week and show the progress that they had made if they wanted to. Aliche said there was no “penalty” for not completing a challenge, it was simply a motivational tool to help women understand finances and help them save money. They all started with a particular goal in mind and worked hard towards those goals.

    Lydia Evans, the owner of SWAG Essentials, took the skincare world by storm with one proprietary product built for men, and it has changed her entrepreneurial journey forever.

    Featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank” show just last December, Evans had the opportunity to pitch the SWAG Bar, which happens to be a loofah soap that is used to exfoliate and eliminate those nasty razor bumps that many men have.

    She was hoping to land a deal with the billionaire team of investors which would take her incredible business idea to the next level. But with only a small $54,000 in sales during and very little room for marketing visibility, the sharks declined. Evans was then pushed to leave the tank without an offer at hand.

    But, despite receiving a “no” from the investor team, her life after appearing on “Shark Tank” has flourished drastically. Prior to being on the show, Evans says that the company had a very slim client list of just a few hundred people. Now, she is proud to claim that clients have literally poured in by the thousands.

    “[It] was the best thing that ever happened to me because we indeed did prove that we’re a formidable product on the market,” she adds.

    BlackEnterprise.com was able to catch up with Evans and talk about her short life on the show, her skincare line, and what is in the future for SWAG.

    Black Enterprise: What’s your career background in terms of offering this product?

    Lydia Evans: I am a medical licensed aesthetician—simply stated, a skincare specialist. Within the field of aesthetics, I specialize in skincare conditions and sensitivities such as eczema, psoriasis, ingrown hair, hyper pigmentation and ethnic skin.

    What was business like before “Shark Tank,” and how is business now?

    Prior to Shark Tank our previous customer list was a few hundred. Now it’s in the thousands.

    Last year, the SWAG Bar sales were around $54,000. We closed more than $100,000 the night we aired. It was crazy.

    Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio asks public’s help with legal fees

    With his legal fees mounting and a trial turning increasingly personal, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is turning to the public for money and the legal system for a new judge.

    Arpaio said in a letter to supporters that he doesn’t have the money to continue paying for attorneys out of his own pocket, adding that he feels “targeted” by the immigration rights groups that have sued him to stop what they say are racist policies targeting Latinos.

    “In some instances I have to personally pay for attorneys to represent me in these cases,” Arpaio wrote in an email Thursday. “I do not have the personal wealth or the wherewithal to keep up with the costly demands of paying for attorneys to defend me.”

    Arpaio made the plea while awaiting a decision by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow on whether the sheriff broke the law in failing to carry out a 2011 court order to refrain from bias against minorities.

    According to published reports, Raven Symone might be getting a permanent spot on ABC’s “The View,” and honestly, it’s not a bad idea.

    No, really.

    As reported here by Jazmine Denise Rogers: “Viewers may be cringing anytime Raven-Symoné opens her mouth, but apparently, there are folks who want the former child star to become a permanent fixture on the daytime TV series. Among the select few who are hopeful that this happens is veteran “View” host Whoopi Goldberg.

    “We love saying it, but Raven and Michelle will be back tomorrow,” Goldberg said. “We’re trying to make it permanent, so write in to everybody.”

    Raven and Michelle Collins have appeared as guest co-hosts on the talk show over a dozen times since March and according to a “Page Six” source, ABC executives are interested in bringing the 29-year-old on full-time.

    “She was interesting and provocative,” the ABC insider said. “Raven would be great as a regular host.”

    I bet she would be great because she already has been great — for the ratings at least.

    If you recall, the ladies of “The View” had been getting their wigs snatched by CBS’ “The Talk.” As reported earlier this year by The Hollywood Reporter, “The new Disney-ABC Television Group president officially starts Feb. 1, and one of his first tough decisions is what to do with the flagging round table show ‘The View’….

      Those precious little girls. A black family, with red blood, a man who fought for a country, sacrificed his life, who had a wife and children, was seen and treated as less than human.

    In an effort to curb food waste, which accounts for roughly one-third of all food produced worldwide, France is making it illegal for supermarkets to throw away any food that is considered edible. The European country’s parliament voted unanimously for the new law, which will force grocers to either donate the food to charity or make sure that it is used as animal feed.

    “It’s scandalous to see bleach being poured into supermarket dustbins along with edible foods,” Guillaume Garot, a former food minister who introduced the bill, told the legislature Thursday evening.

    Palo Alto to Enforce the Largest Mass Displacement of People in History of the City

    Palo Alto is about to embark on the single largest mass deportation and dislocation of a people in the City’s history. The residents of Buena Vista Mobile Park, totaling around 400 people, may soon be forced off of the grounds which has been many of their homes for generations. The park sits on an approximately 4.5 acre site very near to El Camino Real, in the exclusive Barron Park neighborhood of Palo Alto, where the medium sales price of a home in April, 2015 was listed at $2,650,000. Contrast this with the mobile homes at Buena Vista that are mostly extremely small, some very old (some dating back as far as the 1950’s) densely packed on the property. In recent decades the park’s residences have been mostly low income Latino families, who own their mobile homes and pay rent for their spaces.

    Yet despite being the only remaining mobile home park in Palo Alto, the city council on Tuesday April 14, 2015, with some minor changes to the relocation package, ruled to allow the closure of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park.

    Say what you want, some may prefer to sugar coat it, but the reality is that the practical impact of closing of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park is in fact the ethnic cleansing of a large portion of Palo Alto’s Latino population, and the further re-segregation of Palo Alto schools.

    The dropout rate for Latino students both in Santa Clara County and statewide is about 30 percent, contrasted with an almost zero percent dropout rate for low income Latino residences of Buena Vista. Many residence of BV have gone on to graduate from universities including Stanford University. Recent college graduates have come back to BV to start families of their own. Stories abound of families working several low paying jobs to support their children, many, if not most, of whom have defied the odds and gone on to great personal and academic achievements. Access to nationally rated Palo Alto schools has played a big part in this story.

    Would this same all white citizen council have allowed this to happen had Buena Vista been occupied primarily by my dad and grandfather’s people: Russian and Ukrainian Jews? Not a chance! “Tell the truth and shame the devil,” is an applicable idiom for the current situation.

    And the last minute face saving efforts by the council, to sweeten the relocation package, to include factoring in the value of a Palo Alto education, and the safe neighborhood feel of Buena Vista, doesn’t alter the bottom line: The closure of the mobile home park has been approved, the die is cast.The residences of Buena Vista have been thrown to the wolves, another causality of the war on the poor.

    And make no mistake, this wealthy white city council could have stopped this vicious attack.
