    That was my first thought when I watched the now-viral video of white police officers—allegedly responding to disturbances at a private pool party in McKinney, Texas—throwing black teenage boys to the ground and handcuffing them.

    When, in the same video, I watched a white officer grab a 14-year-old black girl roughly by her hair and throw her facedown to the ground, before sitting his fully clothed, rotund body on her thin, bare back, my thoughts became even more intense.

    Ezell Ford and Oscar Grant were in similar positions when cops fatally shot them in the back. If that were my daughter, there would be some slow singing and flower bringing.

    Clearly, these are visceral reactions and not the “We shall overcome, let Jesus and justice handle it” way that black people are expected to respond to state-sanctioned violence against our children, but black rage is inevitable in the face of anti-black racism. And right now? That’s all I got.

    This is the letter we’ll send to Mayor Loughmiller and local officials on your behalf. Feel free to add a personal comment in the space provided.

    Dear Mayor Brian Loughmiller, District Attorney Greg Willis, Police Chief Greg Conley and McKinney City Council members,

    I am writing to urge you to fire Officer Casebolt and file criminal charges of assault and battery against him for his brutal and discriminatory actions against Dajerria Becton and a group of Black teens who attended a pool party at Craig Ranch pool.

    Officer Casebolt’s actions were inexcusable and reflect a deeply discriminatory and abusive culture of policing within McKinney law enforcement. Officer Casebolt violently arrested, verbally assaulted and physically attacked a number of the teens, including Dajerria Becton who was body slammed, pinned to the ground and put in handcuffs while unarmed and wearing a bikini. Casebolt then drew his gun at teens who came to Dajerria’s rescue.

    No person who treats another human being, let alone children, in such an abusive, life-threatening manner can be a police officer. The Black teens were singled out for abuse and none of the white bystanders experienced any police aggression. It’s gravely unjust.

    In addition to Officer Casebolt, all of the officers present at Craig Ranch pool, who stood by and allowed this police violence to take place, must be held accountable. I also urge you to drop the unjust charges against the 14-year-old boy arrested for “evading arrest and interfering with police.”

      The video made me cry because it showed me how black children are not allowed to play. How they’re not allowed to just be fucking kids. How their play becomes criminalized and how they’re socialized to become black adults who internalize that their very breathing selves are criminal.

      It made me cry to see a young black woman, vulnerable and almost naked in her bathing suit, being manhandled by a cop. Who tossed her around like her body was his property. Who listened to her sobbing for her mother, yet pushed her face down into the grass, kept his knee in her back and handcuffed her.

      It made me cry to see, yet again, how being black makes one guilty until proven innocent in the United States. Respectability politics fail when a polite young black man says: “Sir, we just came here,” is told what he’s doing is illegal, is treated as a suspect and is told he’s “a part of the mob.” At the same time, Brooks, the videographer, said he was “basically invisible” to the police and so could shoot what was happening without his body controlled as every black body in sight had to be.

      It made me cry because almost anything involving black people and swimming or water can make me cry, just as the scene of slaves being thrown overboard in the film Amistad made me burst out in tears in 1997.

      It made me cry to see a gun pulled on these children. I only had a police officer begin to pull a gun on me once, but it scared the shit out of me and altered my interactions with police forever – and I was an adult. How scarred will these children be after such trauma?

As did last month’s story about the sunken slave ship headed for the Smithsonian. One of the saddest (and proudest) stories my father shared with me was about how he learned to swim as a grown man. As a child in Ohio, he couldn’t learn to swim in the local segregated pool; and, even though he served in the United States Air Force on Johnston Island for a year, he couldn’t swim. I see these black kids terrorized around a pool, and I think of the child version of my father being told he couldn’t go to the pool, as well as the young adult Sergeant Thrasher on that dinky island in the South Pacific afraid because he couldn’t swim. I think of the terror of the black woman slave tied to a chair that the future US Senator James DeWolf tossed overboard when he was a slave runner, before he expressed regret – about losing the chair.


      It made me cry because I thought about how, in 2010, about 70% of black children couldn’t swim, while only 42% of white children couldn’t. According to US Masters Swimming: “Overall, nine people per day drown in the United States; six out of the nine are people of color.” This is racism equalling death right here and McKinney will perpetuate this.

    The white police officer who slammed a black girl to the ground—and pulled his gun on another black teen—at a pool party in McKinney, Texas had been previously sued for excessive force and racial animus. Officer David Eric Casebolt was put on leave Monday following a video that came out Sunday showing him going after black teens. In 2008, a black man sued Casebolt and two other McKinney officers in federal civil court for violating his civil rights.

    Albert Earl Brown, Jr. alleged Casebolt “reached in my private area” and “also pulled my pants down below my ankles” to search him for drugs. Casebolt and the other officers allegedly shined a flashlight in Brown’s anus after slamming his face repeatedly into the hood of the car. Brown alleged that Casebolt made disparaging remarks about “white girls” hanging out with a “dope dealer.” Brown’s complaint was dismissed by a judge in 2009.

        I haven’t check property values but Craig Ranch appears to be at the higher end of the middle class given the amenities like a golf course, etc…

        So, what is clearly going on here is that there are white folks living there who do not like the fact that black folks live there and they certainly don’t want to share facilities with them. Now, in the normal course of events, I suspect that racist b!tches like Kate and her friends who attacked Tatiana, just give dirty looks and are able to keep a lid on most of their hostility. But seeing a black resident have a party at a shared facility, especially a pool, and invite other black children was too much for Kate et al to bear. So, since they were children she and her friends verbally and then physically assaulted them. What they really want is for the black folks to move out.

I’m talking about the type of racist who will make trouble for black people when they see an opportunity. They might do this alone, but I think they are emboldened when there are more of them. Remember how John Crawford was murdered, one 24 year old white guy lied on a 911 call and started the trouble that resulted in John Crawford’s death.     The family of a young black man who was killed by police in an Ohio Walmart while holding an unloaded BB rifle and speaking on his cellphone have called for action to be taken against a 911 caller who claimed he was pointing the gun at people.

    John Crawford III was shot dead last month by an officer responding to an emergency call made by Ronald Ritchie, a shopper standing 100ft away, who repeatedly stated to the dispatcher that Crawford was pointing the air rifle at customers.

    Surveillance footage and audio recordings released after a grand jury declined to indict the officer who shot Crawford showed that Crawford was holding the rifle at his side and pointing it to the floor at the time when Ritchie alleged that “he just pointed it at, like, two children”.

    Crawford’s father and the family’s attorney said that Ritchie, 24, should be questioned by police over the discrepancy between the footage and his allegation, which he made about 80 seconds before Crawford was shot, and confirmed when asked soon after. Knowingly “making false alarms” is a crime under Ohio law punishable by a fine or jail sentence.

    “He was the catalyst, if you will, in the whole sequence of events leading up to my son’s death,” John Crawford Jr told the Guardian. “It was a crank call. He excited the call, and exaggerated the call, and frankly it was just a bunch of lies.”

    Ritchie declined to comment in an online message on Friday. He has previously maintained that Crawford posed a threat to shoppers and that the 911 call was justified.

    Why McKinney Happened

    The nation is once again focused on police brutality today thanks to the violent attack by a cop on black swimmers in the Dallas suburb of McKinney, Texas. Once again, the video capability of cameras has brought the routine police brutality people of color face in the United States into our sight. But it’s also worth noting why the cops were called to the scene anyway–the racist whites of McKinney.

    Neighbors are defending police who chased black teenagers at gunpoint and tackled a girl wearing a bikini after breaking up a party at a community pool over the weekend in McKinney, Texas.

    But one homeowner and her daughter say those neighbors confronted some teens when they went outside and began taunting them and their guests with racial slurs before starting a fight.

    Tatiana Rose, who lives in the Craig Ranch neighborhood and hosted the party with her siblings, said a woman and man who live in the neighborhood showed up and called their friends “black f*ckers” and told them to return to their Section 8 housing.

    The 19-year-old Rose said most of her friends who attended the party live in Craig Ranch — which sits along a golf course.

    Rose said one of her younger brother’s friends — a white girl named Grace Stone — scolded the neighbors and told them it wasn’t right to use racial slurs.

    “So then they started verbally abusing her, saying that she needs to do better for herself, cursing at her, and I’m saying, no that’s wrong – she’s 14, you should not say things like that to a 14-year-old,” Rose said.

    She said the woman, who she identified as Kate, told her to go back to her government-assisted housing and smacked her in the face when she stuck up for the younger girl, and she said another woman also attacked her.

        Cop did a ” battle roll” never heard of that? Is that something you learn in military? All In With Chris Hayes in is saying cop was a trainer for other cops on hos to diffuse these types of situations. But he was clearly out of control.

        Parents said police refused to explain why they had handcuffed their daughter or return parent’s call the next day. Again, parents are white. So it is more than a purely racial issue.

        Her innocence was taken away at that moment. I just can’t bear to think of all that Dajerria will bear in memory from this.

      This mistreatment of Blacks at Craig Ranch is all that has been on my mind this morning.

      What horrid things were said to those girls!

      The racial slurs included a reference to Section 8 housing.

      TATIANA ROSE: My name is Tatiana Rose. Yeah…so basically what happened was me and my sister and and a few friends made a cookout and I basically (?) when I went to get my key pad from someone, this lady was saying racial slurs to some friends that came to the cookout.

      INTERVIEWER: What kind of slurs was she saying?

      TATIANA ROSE: She was saying things such as Black F…er, that’s why you live in Section 8 homes. There was also a male that was saying rude things. And this 14 year old girl named Grace which is my brother’s friend stuck up for us saying, “That is not right. You shouldn’t do that. That’s racist.” and things like that.

      And, I’m saying, “No. That’s wrong. She’s 14. You should not say things like that to a 14 year old.” And, they’re like “You need to go back to where you’re from.” and things like that telling me I need to go back to my Section 8 home and stuff like that.

      So, I said, “Excuse me?” And then the other lady, her name’s Kate, came up to me and she smacked me in my face. She…

      TATIANA ROSE: Kate’s Caucasian. And, she went and she hit me in my face. And, that’s when both of the women attacked me.

      INTERVIEWER: And, just for clarity, you live in this neighborhood. Is that correct?

      TATIANA ROSE: Yes. I live in Craig Ranch.

      INTERVIEWER: Alright. Most of the people that attended this also live in Craig Ranch. Is that right?

      TATIANA ROSE: Yes.

      INTERVIEWER: And, mom, do you want to say anything? Will you say your name for me?

      LASHANA BURKS: I am LaShana Burks. I’m just upset that we couldn’t have a peaceful event and, if there was any issues that they truly had, that they should have came to me, the adult that was here at the event, and say, “Hey we don’t want the kids, ….whatever…” then let me handle it and not go to the extreme.

      INTERVIEWER: Right. And most of the kids here were like classmates of them that were inviting so like in the area.

    It is heartbreaking (and frightening) to see a precious 14 year old’s dignity and goodness attacked. What scars will she carry from this?

    I am so upset and stressed by this. Tears are gathering within my being at the same time as anger.

    I saw that on CNN today! Cop was clearly in a combat adrenalin pumping mindset and other cops were trying to blunt his over the top battle ready mode. Pulled a gun!. I am a white upper class southern grandmother. It is, of course, heightened by racism but I have said, police dept. are hiring vets with PTSD assuming they are good candidates as they are trained on how to shoot and follow orders. But x military police and community police are completely different and a former vet with multiple tours may have undiagnosed PTSD.So, they are in a constant battle ready mindset.We saw this in the cop who killed John Good Im the Walmart, and cop who killed Tamir Rice and now this latest incident of drawing guns on kids in a pool.

    I had a flat tire, first cop asked me :”why I didn’t know how to change a tire” I am a grandmother. He commanded me to put on my flashers and drove off. He was young enough to have been an x vet. Second cop, older and a very kind private AA man pulled up after he left. The older cop was furious that I had been treated like this. He asked if I had gotten cops badge number.

    Cities need to screen for PTSD if a vet is applying for a city police job. Very few people can return from multiple tours of combat and overcome their drive to be the family or neighborhood policeman, on a rage to jump into action rather than defuse a situation.

      2dogsonly, the challenge with your PTDS case is that the evidence of these white officers going ballistic and in combat mode while going on their killing rampages vitims are ALL BLACK.

        Yes, you are right! And I said AA are more victimized by cops with PTSD but everyone, including a white grandmother can encounter a cop with PTSD though clearly just verbally abused. Although, I am not absolutely certain anyone is safe until city police departments screen for PTSD. And understand vets with multiple tours of duty may cause tremendous harm in a city. Just finished reading ” Rise Of The Warrior Cop”.
