Friday Open Thread |President Obama greeted by Confederate flag supporters

Tennessee bigots greet PotusAs the national conversation on the Confederate flag continues to unfold, some supporters of the flag took their message directly to the president of the United States by lining the route of his motorcade through Nashville on Wednesday.

President Obama visited Taylor Stratton Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee, to speak about the Affordable Care Act, which a Supreme Court ruling last week kept intact. It was there that protestors gathered, The Tennessean reported.

It was the deadly church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17 that ignited the national debate over the Confederate flag. Photos of suspect Dylann Roof and a manifesto attributed to Roof appeared online in the days after the shooting, underscoring the racially-based nature of his alleged crime. Among the photos were several of Roof appearing with a Confederate battle flag, a symbol that has long been defended by white Southerners as part of their “heritage” while serving as a difficult reminder of slavery during the Confederacy for African-Americans.

“For too long we were blind to the pain that the confederate flag stirred in our citizens… The flag has always represented more than ancestral pride,” Obama said during his emotional eulogy for Charleston shooting victim Rev. Clementa Pinckney last week. “For many, black and white, that flag was a reminder of systemic oppression. It’s true a flag did not cause these murders. But the flag was a reminder of oppression. By taking down that flag, we express God’s grace.”

a conversation with my friend keith

    By Liberal Librarian

Part of being a librarian is that you talk. You talk a lot. Much like bartenders and taxi cab drivers, people unburden themselves to you. You become part priest, part counselor, part sounding board.

One of my patrons is a very good man named Keith. I met him years ago when he would come in every weekend and ask how President Obama was doing in the Gallup polling. For several weeks I would perform this task, trying to figure out if he was happy or saddened by his sub-50% numbers. I don’t quite remember how we outed each other, but we discovered that we were kindred souls in our admiration for this president, and have been fast friends since.

He came into the library this week, and as usual, he sat down at the reference desk and we began our kaffeeklatsch, sans the coffee. Our conversations range widely, but politics are always the center of them.

Of course, we were over the moon over the wonderful week we and the President had with ACA and marriage equality. And then the conversation turned to that buffoon, Donald Trump.

“I can’t believe that Trump is doing so well in the polls,” he said.

“I can. He’s the only GOP candidate who’s not hiding his racism. He’s speaking to the GOP program.”

“Oh, now, you don’t really believe that GOP leaders are racist, do you?”

“Of course I do. Look at their utterances.”

“But the intelligentsia is horrified at what Trump is doing.”

“Look Keith, here’s the thing: in their heart of hearts, the ‘smart people’ might be aghast at the naked racism of the base. But, since Nixon, they made the calculation that kowtowing to that racism was the only way they could even hope to stand against the Democrats. And now, after 50 years, they have nothing else. No Republican can win a primary without pandering to that racism. And Democrats won’t let the survivor run away from what he had to do to secure the nomination.”

“They created a monster which is eating them.”

“And I feel no sympathy for them.”

    Bernie, Hillary…and Joe
The story in the Democratic primary this week has all been about Bernie-mania. Sanders drew a huge crowd in Denver and gained ground on Clinton in a poll in Iowa. On the former, Jonathan Topaz points out that it’s a good strategy for an insurgent.

He’s running to win a movement as much as an election, and there’s no clearer sign of it than the liberal strongholds he’s visiting — Madison, Wisconsin; Minneapolis; Denver; Portland, Maine.

“The news of large crowds manages to make its way to people, particularly in Iowa and New Hampshire,” said senior Sanders adviser Tad Devine. “It’s demonstrating that the message Bernie is delivering is connecting with a large audience.”

The idea is to barnstorm the nation’s most progressive cities in the hopes of attracting field organizers, small-dollar donors and, most importantly, the kind of media attention that insurgent candidates are typically starved for.

    …………….

I decided to look a little deeper into the polling and found something interesting that I haven’t seen anyone comment about. In the Quinnipiac poll of Iowa caucus-goers, 52% support Hillary Clinton and 33% support Bernie Sanders. But it’s interesting to note who comes in third…Joe Biden with 7%.

There was some buzz last week about the possibility of VP Biden getting into the race. But I think it’s important to note that it came from an article in the conservative Washington Times. An article in Politico yesterday showed how most of that came from people who have had no contact with Biden or his inner circle.

Plan to curtail public records laws sparks uproar in Wisconsin
Madeleine Behr, The (Appleton, Wis.) Post-Crescent

PPLETON, Wis. — A vote by Wisconsin’s budget committee to dismantle the state’s open records laws has caused an uproar across the Badger State.

Under these measures, lawmakers would be able to draft bills in secret and hide their communications from the public. The changes would also apply to local government officials, including school board members.

No other state in the country would have similar statutes, according to the Legislative Reference Bureau, a nonpartisan agency that helps legislators draft laws.

The Joint Finance Committee passed it 12-4 on a party line vote. Republicans refused to say who initiated the measures and the reasoning for it.

Before becoming law, both houses of the state Legislature and Gov. Scott Walker must approve the measures.

It’s historic what this family has accomplished (two siblings that are multiple GS winners and held th number one ranking) with love, dedication and positive attitudes. And they’ve accomplished these heights in face of relentless hostility and racism. That’s why I believe that their achievements overshadow everyone because no player has had to endure this kind of treatment ever before. And that’s why people who support them are so relentless as well.

University of Phoenix sidesteps Obama order on recruiting veterans

Hundreds of soldiers and their families spread lawn chairs and blankets across the grassy parade ground at Fort Campbell, which straddles the state line between Tennessee and Kentucky. They’re here to see Big Smo, the reality TV star who calls himself “The King of Hick Hop.”

“Getting out living every day of my life,” the rotund country rapper bellows as he bounds around the stage, wearing a necklace made of beer can tabs. “Southern swag in my blood, so to hell with the wife.” The soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division rise to their feet and cheer.

This is not just any concert. It’s a recruitment event for the University of Phoenix, the proprietary college that is far and away the largest recipient of taxpayer money under the post-9/11 GI Bill. That iconic program launched during World War II now pays college tuition for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

The stage is wrapped in a blue banner advertising the for-profit University of Phoenix. The school’s name and logo dominate a giant video board to the left of the stage, with a tagline claiming “30+ years of proud service to our military community.”

A representative of the Army’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs introduces the University of Phoenix’s military liaison, Craig Morton, as a friend of the armed forces. Morton, the representative says, gave away five Galaxy computer tablets to soldiers before the concert.

The University of Phoenix paid the military $25,000 to sponsor last October’s concert, according to records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. That sponsorship allowed the institution to sidestep anexecutive order by President Barack Obama intended to prevent for-profit colleges from gaining preferential access to the military, including freely dispatching recruiters to bases.

In signing the order at Fort Stewart in Georgia, Obama warned soldiers in April 2012 that such institutions are “trying to swindle and hoodwink you.” His action came after veterans groups wrote to the White Housecomplaining of abusive, deceptive and aggressive recruiting tactics by for-profit colleges, which had been documented in congressional reports and law enforcement investigations.

In an extreme example that Obama said “should never happen in America,” recruiters from one college were caught enrolling Marines from a medical unit at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina with head injuries so severe that they did not know what courses they were taking.

“We’re going to up our oversight of improper recruitment practices,” Obama said. “We’re going to strengthen the rules about who can come on post to talk to service members.”

Military regulations adopted as a result of Obama’s order “ban inducements, including any gratuity, favor, discount, (or) entertainment” for the “purpose of securing enrollments of Service members.” Recruiting activities are supposed to be limited to education fairs and other narrowly approved activities where every school would have equal access.

But the regulations say nothing about sponsoring events.

Anonymous donors give $3M for Clementa Pinckney scholarship fund

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and the Rev. Norvel Goff announced Thursday that it prompted an out-of-state group of anonymous donors to raise $3 million for a scholarship in the name of the church’s fallen pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney.

“These people will never get a pat on the back and they’ll never know a recipient of these scholarships; they’ll just know in their heart that in a moment of tragedy in America, they responded in such a positive and generous way.”

The Reverend Pinckney Scholarship Fund, a nonprofit, will provide college and advanced-degree scholarships for members of the extended Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church community, including the families of the victims of the June 17 tragedy. It also will be used for children of the extended Charleston community, Riley said…

A statement from the anonymous donors

“We do not pretend to understand the pain caused by this unimaginable tragedy. We simply want members of the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church community to know that the burdens of perseverance and empathy, which they have demonstrated with such dignity, do not fall exclusively on their shoulders. We want them to know that others, most of whom do not share their race or religion, who do not come from South Carolina, abhor the injustices from which they have suffered and admire the ways the African-American community has enriched our nation. We honor Reverend Pinckney who so profoundly embodied the values that bind us together as Americans.”

Report: Others Could Be Charged In Charleston Church Shooting

Authorities are exploring pressing charges against associates of suspected Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof, a report by The State suggests.

Unnamed sources tell The State that the investigation has been widened to include Roof’s possible associates, who may have known the alleged shooter was planning the June 17 attack, which left nine African Americans dead at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.

    From the report:

Although it appears Roof traveled alone to and from Charleston on the day of the killings, it is possible others had some knowledge of what he planned to carry out, said the sources, who are not being identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

Investigators began to explore how much Roof’s associates knew, and when they knew it, after reviewing his cellphone and computer records, the sources said…

Until I get proven wrong, I stand by my theory that Rev. Pinckney was targeted. If Dylann Roof had planned this for so long, like six months, then why was he writing his manifesto in such a hurry? I think the plan was made over a much shorter period of time, mostly after the cop who murdered Walter Scott was charged. And the greatest likelihood, as in take it to the bank, is that he had associates, co-planners, those who encouraged him and so on. I said this before and I still believe this, the manifesto was so unoriginal and so vague as to motive, that it had to have been intentionally misleading. Race war? C’mon. It makes a hell of a lot more sense they were after Rev. Pinckney.

      • eliihass says:

I agree with you, Rev. Pinckeny was the prime target. Particularly after his consistently vocal stance and well-articulated words and effort following the Walter Scott murder by the white police officer. The same police officer who is now Dylann Roof’s cell neighbor.

Associated Press Leaves Out Racism Controversy While Reporting On Meeting Between Rand Paul And Cliven Bundy

AP Ignores That Paul Had Previously Condemned Bundy’s “Offensive” Commentary
    June 30, 2015 5:37 PM EDT ››› TIMOTHY JOHNSON

The Associated Press’ (AP) report on a meeting between lawless Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) completely ignored the nationwide controversy Bundy sparked in 2014 when he made a series of racist comments about “the Negro.” Paul himself repudiated Bundy at the time for his “offensive” commentary, a fact that was also missing from the AP article.

According to the AP, Bundy and Paul met during a June 29 campaign event in Mesquite, Nevada. Bundy said of Paul to the AP, “In general, I think we’re in tune with each other.” Politico additionally reported that the two men spoke for 45 minutes.

In its report, AP described the April 2014 armed standoff between Bundy supporters and federal law enforcement agents as “one of the more dramatic conflicts over land rights in recent years,” but made no mention of Bundy’s infamous racist commentary or that Paul had previously condemned him:

Paul’s meeting with Bundy recalled one of the more dramatic conflicts over land rights in recent years.

Hundreds of armed supporters joined Bundy in April 2013 to stop a roundup of his cattle near Bunkerville about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The Bureau of Land Management says he owes more than $1 million in grazing fees over more than 20 years. Bundy argues the federal government has no authority there.

As he’s said before, Graham told his audience Sioux City on Thursday night that he would deal with ISIS by increasing the United States’ military presence in Iraq. Explaining his terse response to the voter’s suggestion to outlaw Islam, Graham told people, “I’m not trying to please him.”

Wisconsin man charged with threatening to kill Obama in La Crosse
    Source: The Wisconsin State Journal
By Ed Treleven, The Wisconsin State Journal on Jul 2, 2015 at 9:15 p.m.

Federal authorities on Thursday charged a Tomah man with making threats to kill President Barack Obama during his visit to La Crosse today.

A warrant was issued for Brian D. Dutcher, 55, who was charged Thursday with making a threat to kill the president. The threat was made in La Crosse on Wednesday, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Madison.

U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil said Thursday that Dutcher was being kept in a mental health facility under a civil commitment sought by authorities in La Crosse County. He is not scheduled to appear in federal court.

On Wednesday, according to an affidavit written by Secret Service Special Agent Jeffrey Ferris, Dutcher approached a security guard at the La Crosse Public Library and said, “The usurper is here and if I get a chance I’ll take him out and I’ll take the shot.”

A usurper is someone who wrongfully takes someone else’s place. A usurper usually tries to take someone’s place on the throne, rather than someone’s seat on a bus.

SHORT: I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK FROM THESE NIGGAS, & I’M WILLING TO KILL FOR IT!

    • Ametia says:

Dutcher also posted to his Facebook that “Killing him is our CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY.” He is currently being kept in a mental health facility.

Declining vaccine rates: Mostly a white problem
By Janell Ross July 3 at 6:30 AM

Americans have grown accustomed to reading about the various social and scientific phenomena that give white Americans — on average — longer life spans, better health and better access to quality health care than any other group.

The truth is a bit more complicated. And new data from a Pew Research Center poll examining American attitudes about a range of scientific issues suggests that the way that white, black and Latino adults think about vaccines is helping to drive another pretty complex but important health trend.

    Good Morning Everyone :)

In my opinion those people displaying the confederate flags as President Obama’s motorcade passed by are heartless, racists. They wave those flags even though they know that the precious nine leaders at Mother Emanuel were murdered by an evil terrorist who “worshipped” all the hate which that flag stood for.

They are just like the White Supremacists of the fifties and sixties:
