This legacy aspires to the shackling of black bodies. It is hard to face this. But all our phrasing—race relations, racial chasm, racial justice, racial profiling, white privilege, even white supremacy—serves to obscure that racism is a visceral experience, that it dislodges brains, blocks airways, rips muscle, extracts organs, cracks bones, breaks teeth. You must never look away from this. You must always remember that the sociology, the history, the economics, the graphs, the charts, the regressions all land, with great violence, upon the body. And should one live in such a body? What should be our aim beyond meager survival of constant, generational, ongoing battery and assault? I have asked this question all my life. I have sought the answer through my reading and writings, through the music of my youth, through arguments with your grandfather, with your mother. I have searched for answers in nationalist myth, in classrooms, out on the streets, and on other continents. The question is unanswerable, which is not to say futile. The greatest reward of this constant interrogation, of confrontation with the brutality of my country, is that it has freed me from ghosts and myths.

    The American South is home to many ironies, but perhaps none as intriguing as those relating to same-sex unions. Before Friday’s historic Supreme Court ruling, same-sex marriage was almost universally banned in Southern states, a reality that painted a bleak picture for LGBT Americans who live there.

    But then there’s also this: There are more gay and lesbian parents raising children in the South than anywhere else in the country, according to an analysis of U.S. Census data by the Williams Institute, an LGBT think tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles. For example, more than 20% of same-sex couples are raising children in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi, and of those couples, blacks and Latinos are more than twice as likely as white parents to be raising children.

    These are facts that help reshape the narrative of same-sex marriage from an individual’s quest to legally wed whomever they please to a family’s search for legal protection.

    “Marriage equality just means that we would be equal,” RayShawn Chandler, a black woman who lives in Georgia and traveled to Connecticut in 2013 to marry her wife, Avery, told Mic. “The goal is to love on one another, have children and share that love with our kids.”

    Why Isn’t Twitter Paying More Attention to Its Black Users?

    One critic says the company missed a big opportunity with the BET Awards

    Tristan Walker, a prominent black entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, logged onto Twitter after putting his kids to bed last night and found that the BET Awards were dominating his feed. The Black Entertainment Television program had also captured several slots on Twitter’s list of trending topics. However, the event wasn’t getting the kind of special treatment Twitter has given to other award shows such as the Grammys and Country Music Awards. The company “should pay attention,” Walker tweeted, rekindling a conversation about the lack of diversity in technology.

    Twitter wasn’t exactly ignoring the BET Awards. The company has been working with the event’s organizers over the past several years. For this year’s show, Twitter staff spent time training them on behind-the-scenes broadcasting from the company’s Periscope app, provided a back-stage selfie camera, and published a blog post with highlights from the show. BET was paying Twitter to advertise on its Trends list and for some of the tweets related to it. Competing social network Snapchat was promoting a live story for the BET Awards on June 28, featuring a stream of pictures and video from attendees and fans.

    According to a 2014 Pew Research Center study, 40 percent of black 18- to 29-year-old Internet users in the U.S. are active on Twitter, compared with 28 percent of white Internet users in the same group. Meanwhile, only 2 percent of Twitter’s workforce is black, according to the company’s diversity statistics. “Why aren’t platforms embracing this demographic group a hell of a lot more?” Walker asks. Twitter declined to comment.

    The company does have an employee group, Blackbirds, that’s designed to “empower employees of color at Twitter and advocate for community enrichment.” And Twitter, like other technology companies, is starting to recruit more heavily from historically black colleges and universities. However, like other Silicon Valley companies, Twitter is building a product that’s meant for all audiences but designed by a mostly male and mostly white workforce.

    Tsipras and Syriza have won big in the referendum, strengthening their hand for whatever comes next. But they’re not the only winners: I would argue that Europe, and the European idea, just won big — at least in the sense of dodging a bullet.

    I know that’s not how most people see it. But think of it this way: we have just witnessed Greece stand up to a truly vile campaign of bullying and intimidation, an attempt to scare the Greek public, not just into accepting creditor demands, but into getting rid of their government. It was a shameful moment in modern European history, and would have set a truly ugly precedent if it had succeeded.

    But it didn’t. You don’t have to love Syriza, or believe that they know what they’re doing — it’s not clear that they do, although the troika has been even worse — to believe that European institutions have just been saved from their own worst instincts. If Greece had been forced into line by financial fear mongering, Europe would have sinned in a way that would sully its reputation for generations. Instead, it’s something we can, perhaps, eventually regard as an aberration.

    And if Greece ends up exiting the euro? There’s actually a pretty good case for Grexit now — and in any case, democracy matters more than any currency arrangement.

    I’m pretty proud of our Greek brothers and sisters today!

    The Bernie Sanders smear campaign has begun
    A Hillary Clinton surrogate took the campaign’s first real shot at Bernie Sanders last week. But it ain’t working.

    It’s been relatively easy so far for Senator Bernie Sanders, the candidate giving Hillary Clinton the most trouble so far on the road to the presidential primaries. But that’s because Clinton’s squad hasn’t deployed yet. Hillary’s got shooters. She rolls way deeper than Bernie, and one has to assume that a good-sized pocket of the Democratic Party establishment waits like a sleeper cell to be called on to attack Sanders if necessary.

    It’s a sign of Sanders’ success that one of Clinton’s hitters was set on the ascendant candidate last Thursday, with Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to test out some new talking points to address Sanders’ astounding crowds and climbing poll numbers. McCaskill went with the “acknowledge-then-conflate” maneuver. Sanders’ crowds are at times dwarfing those of any candidate in either party. This cannot be denied. So Team Clinton has to try to make that clear sign of success a liability.

    “Well, you know, Rand Paul’s father got massive crowds, Ron Paul,” she said. “He got the same size crowds. Pat Buchanan got massive crowds. It’s not unusual for someone who has an extreme message to have a following.”

    Ooooh, gotcha: Big crowds mean you’re an extremist. So the fewer people you have, the more reasonable you are. And, so, I guess if you stand at a podium before no one, just an empty field, and give a stump speech you’re the most reasonable and fringe-averse candidate ever to run for office.

    Is this the best the Clinton team has right now? McCaskill endorsed Clinton for president more than two years ago, way back in 2013, but she apparently didn’t spend a whole lot of that time working on her potential talking points. It feels a little embarrassing as a tactic. Its fallacious, clumsy logic seems more suited for the YouTube comments section: You know who else got big crowds? Hitler.

    McCaskill’s attack obviously wasn’t that crudely drawn, but it falls apart almost immediately when any scrutiny is offered on the trio she presents: Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan, and Bernie Sanders. One of these is not like the others.

    Sanders’ domestic economic platform, his campaign’s bread and butter, is mostly a return to mid-century, postwar policies, infused with social democratic ideas from places like Sweden, where social democrats gained a majority in parliament 75 years ago.

    What Sanders proposes is not new, and it’s not particularly radical. It’s just radical-seeming given our decades-long turn toward hyper-capitalism and neoliberalism (which happened to a large degree under President Bill Clinton). The Swedish “socialism” that Sanders favors is capitalism with boundaries. Sweden, with a population less than that of North Carolina, has birthed an impressive list of global companies under its “extreme” “socialism”: Volvo, IKEA, Spotify, Saab, H&M, Skype, Ericsson, AstraZeneca, and many more. Terrifying! So extreme!

      The Democratic Party elitists wanted a clear, uncontested shot for Hillary straight to the nomination. Otherwise, Hillary shows her a$$, runs a smear campaign against any opponent that might be a threat, and there goes her “champion of the people” persona. She can’t help herself, this is how she rolls.

      Knew right away, she got that tactic from the Clinton Camp.

      Remember when asked if she believed Barack Obama was an American citizen, Hillary responded: “As far as I know he is.”

    The nation of Greece may be the cradle of democracy but these days it’s getting a harsh lesson in its limitations. Right now, streets are filled with protesters but there are no lines at ATMs because the banks are all closed. Everyone is waiting to see what’s going to happen when the people vote this week-end on a referendum that will decide, essentially, if the country is going to remain in the Euro and accept the ongoing edicts of “the troika” or if it’s going to “Grexit.

    9≥ ” (The troika is the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund which has been lending the the country money for the past five years on the condition that it engage in the metaphorical human sacrifice of its citizens.)

    As you undoubtedly know by now, aside from being chosen to suffer for the sins of all the high flyers who caused the financial crisis, the Greeks also had the temerity to elect a leftist government with the express purpose of ending the austerity plan that has ruined their economy and thrown them into even deeper debt than they were in before. That, as Poppy Bush used to say, will not stand. Nobody puts Troika in the corner. The Greeks must pay and pay, not only for their economic folly but also for thinking they could get out of their proper punishment through democratic politics. Sure, those elections are nice and all but lets not forget who’s really in charge.

    Paul Krugman’s column on Monday explained that all the hand-wringing over Greece’s “irresponsibility” is balderdash:

    The GOP Base Loves Trump

    It sees itself in his foreign policy belligerence, anti-elite agitation, and raw bigotry.

    There’s no world in which Donald Trump is a serious candidate for president. Republican elites don’t want him, Republican donors don’t want him, and if—through some cosmic fluke—he managed to win a major primary, every strategist and activist in the Republican Party would turn their aim toward him and his candidacy.

    But just because Trump is an unqualified vanity candidate doesn’t mean he’s unimportant in the story of the 2016 GOP presidential primary. Unlike Chris Christie or Mike Huckabee—two vastly more legitimate candidates—Trump is popular with Republican voters. A new CNN national poll puts him in second place in the GOP field at 12 percent support—seven points behind the leader, Jeb Bush—while recent polls from Iowa and New Hampshire also show him with a second place spot in those crucial early contests. If Trump holds his position, he’ll be on stage with Bush, Scott Walker, and Marco Rubio when official debates start in August (he could even lose some support and still make the cut).

    The obvious question is “Why?”—why does Trump have a hold on this thick slice of the members of the Republican base? The answer is, unlike the professional politicians in the race, Trump is—from his views on immigration to the “issue” of Obama’s citizenship—one of them.

    Latino Leader On Donald Trump: He Is ‘Exposing A Lot Of The Dirty Truths Of The Republican Party’

    Real estate mogul and presidential candidate Donald Trump touted his business and dealmaking expertise in his campaign launch speech last month, saying, “I did a lot of great deals and I did them early and young, and now I’m building all over the world.” But remarks he made in that same speech are threatening his business empire as companies move to distance themselves from the candidate who said that undocumented immigrants from Mexico “killers and rapists.” On Monday, NBC cut ties with Trump and on Wednesday, Macy’s announced it would stop carrying merchandise from his brand.

    “We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico,” Macy’s said in a statement. “We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation.”

    Trump responded on Wednesday, saying it was his decision to terminate his relationship with Macy’s and NBC because the corporations clearly “support illegal immigration, which is totally detrimental to the fabric of our once great country.”

    One group that hasn’t yet cut ties with the real estate mogul is the Republican Party. While NBC, Univision and Macy’s have publicly denounced his beliefs, members of the Republican party have remained silent or have expressed their support for his anti-immigrant sentiment. On Tuesday, 2016 candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), whose father is Cuban, defended his opponent, saying, “I like Donald Trump. I think he’s terrific, I think he’s brash, I think he speaks the truth.”

    The Republican Party has made it a priority for 2016 to reach out to Latino voters — an effort that was detailed in a report commissioned after its 2012 presidential election loss. The LIBRE Initiative, a group funded by the billionaire conservative Koch brothers, has launched initiatives in Nevada and other battleground states to connect with Latinos including driver’s test classes and tax preparation sessions. And Republican candidates like Jeb Bush have already hired campaign staffers to take on their Latino outreach effort. But at the same time, candidates vying for the party’s nomination like Trump have continued to make disparaging comments about Latinos in the United States, and the party has yet to condemn them.

    “Donald Trump’s remarks are very racially charged and should have no place in the American political dialogue of today,” Arturo Carmona, the executive director of Latino advocacy group Presente Action, told ThinkProgress. “In a way, it’s good that we have somebody that’s actually speaking the truth like Donald Trump about what’s really motivating many of these [anti-immigrant] policies. I’d rather have somebody like Trump be honest about what the motivations are than have the GOP and Congress hiding behind political rhetoric, but at the same time, passing policies that are criminalizing immigrants and trying to take away executive action protections.”

    How the primary calendar is hurting Scott Walker

    cott Walker will be officially entering the presidential race a week from Monday, after a period in which other candidates seemed to be getting most of the attention. For some time now, many analysts (including me) have pointed to Walker as perhaps the only candidate who appeals to every part of the Republican coalition, from the big-money donors to the tea partiers to the foreign policy hawks. While he’s still in single digits in national polls, Walker is leading in Iowa and has a more logical path to the nomination than most of his competitors. But today, Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Martin of the New York Times report that there’s trouble brewing, in a way that sheds some interesting light on the challenges the primary calendar present for all the Republican candidates. Here’s what’s happening with Walker:

    To protect his lead in Iowa, a state with a heavily conservative Republican electorate, Mr. Walker has taken a harder line on a number of issues than his allies had anticipated.

    Now a growing number of party leaders say Mr. Walker is raising questions about his authenticity and may be jeopardizing his prospects in states where voters’ sensibilities are more moderate.

    His response to the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage most emphatically demonstrated his sharp shift to the right: Mr. Walker called the court’s ruling “a grave mistake” and reiterated his call for a constitutional amendment that would allow states to ban same-sex marriage. It sent a clear message to social conservatives, and one that was noticeably not echoed by two of his leading rivals, Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush— who warned last year that Republicans would need to campaign as if they were willing to lose the nomination if they hoped to win the general election….

    To Republicans like Mr. Reed, Mr. Walker appears increasingly willing to lose the general election to win the primary.

    If Donald Trump is curious as to why he manged to lose money on a casino and made a boatload of other bad business decisions, the fact he’s shocked by the reaction of single-handedly destroying the Trump brand with his massive racism is everything you need to know as to how terrible it is.

    Republican presidential candidate and real estate mogul Donald Trump on Saturday stood by statements he made recently that too many illegal immigrants from Mexico are criminals but said he was surprised by the backlash and that his comments are causing financial concerns.

    “The crime is raging and it’s violent. And if you talk about it, it’s racist,” Trump told Fox News, three days after a purported illegal Mexican immigrant deported five previous times allegedly killed a woman in San Francisco.

    Trump first made his inflammatory remarks during his non-scripted, June 16 presidential announcement speech.

    “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best,” he said during the announcement. “They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting.”

    Since then, a list of businesses have announced plans to cut ties with Trump’s vast business empire, while fellow Republican candidates and others have questioned Trump’s remarks.

    NBC and Univision, for example, have decided not to air the Trump-owned Miss Universe Pageant, Macy’s is dropping his signature clothing line, New York Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered a review of Trump’s city contracts and NASCAR is moving an annual banquet from the Trump National Doral resort in Miami.

    “I didn’t know it was going to be this severe,” Trump said Saturday, adding that he was surprised by the NASCAR decision, considering he has a good relationship with the group. “I am a whipping post.”

    Surprise! Smart businesses and business leaders don’t want to wreck their brand by pissing off the fastest-growing demographic in the US. Imagine that. No corporation wants to associate with somebody who calls all Mexicans criminals in 2015 America.

    ABC is rebooting its 1950s/1960s hybrid game show/variety show, “To Tell The Truth,” which will be hosted by “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson.

    Confirmed regular celebrity panelists include NeNe Leakes and Betty White (who actually was a panelist on the original program, decades ago). Also Anthony Anderson’s own “brassy” mother (as the press release describes her), Doris, will be the official scorekeeper and asking questions of her own, “not to mention embarrassing her son every chance she gets.”

    Hamilton breaks 45-year-old F1 record

    After the British GP victory, Lewis Hamilton has set new record for consecutive F1 races led by racking up number 18 today.

    That beats Sir Jackie Stewart’s long-standing record, the Scot having managed 17 in succession while driving for Matra and Tyrrell in 1969-70.

    Home hero Lewis Hamilton, who started the race in pole position ended up in third place by the end of the second lap.

    Women own 30 percent of all businesses in the U.S., and Black women hold 14 percent – or 1.3 million – of those companies. While Black women-owned business are thriving all across the nation, the largest share of Black women-owned businesses are located in Georgia, Maryland, and Illinois.

    *Young folks may credit Rihanna for coining the phrase “B**** Better Have My Money” – but classic-heads and fans of Blaxploitation films know the punchy phrase really comes from actor Antonio Fargas.

    Fargas recited a poem with the same name during a competition for Pimp of the Year in a memorable scene from the classic 80’s film “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.” The comedy is a spoof of the blaxploitation films of the 70’s and features stars of that era like Jim Brown and Fargas. Now Fargas is giving props to the Bajan singer for repurposing the phrase.

    “I was at the premier for “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka” and Eddie Murphy was sitting behind me and said that scene is the funniest thing he’s ever seen,” Fargas tells WatchLOUD.com. “When you get that kind of co-sign and get guys like Will Smith, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence [giving] you jobs on their shows because they know who’s shoulders they stand… I feel like it’s the same thing Rihanna has seen… this was an opportunity for her to create something of her own. And I take my hat off to her for giving me that respect.”
