Donald Trump has the GOP worried.
Weeks into his 2016 presidential campaign, the billionaire entrepreneur’s fiery rhetoric on illegal immigration has gotten the attention of Republican National Committee chairman, Reince Priebus, the Washington Post reports.
In an hourlong phone call with Trump Wednesday, the Post says Priebus urged Trump to “tone down his inflammatory comments that have infuriated a key election constituency.”

About Bernie Sanders, sorry but I’m one who’s highly suspicious of this flood of faux outrage over Sanders and his various sentiments. Call me crazy, but at least we know where he stands. He’s not faking or grandstanding. He’s telling us exactly what he thinks, without sugarcoating anything.
I have more respect for that any day than those who woo – not us necessarily, but our votes specifically – and will patronize and humor us, and yes even disrespect us with the most transparently condescending gestures and overtures that don’t even bother to pretend to respect our intelligence and our ability to know when we are being manipulated or played.
We can take our pick of the crap, sorry crop.
As with most white folks and some brainwashed, over-conditioned black folks, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have been raised and conditioned to see white people and hence themselves, as more competent and intellectually superior to us.
That sense of superiority is not always necessarily paired with a hostility and contempt, even though it more often than not is. I say that to say, that as much as this sudden outrage over Bernie Sanders has caught fire, I can’t help seeing through a lot of the b.s. There’s nothing so offensive Bernie Sanders can do or say that will ever trump any of what Hillary and Bill have said and done over the years. And still continue to do and say themselves behind the scenes, or via their surrogates. Even with scores of former Obama staffers working for her, she’s still not naturally spontaneous or effusive in her support of or aligning with the President and his successful policies. She still looks pained and uncomfortable as she carefully searches and choose her words every time.
That someone is choreographed so she doesn’t say the ‘wrong’ thing even if she can’t really be naturally effusive, does not an ally make.
I judge people by that wisdom: when a person shows you who they are, believe them. Hillary showed her butt ages ago, and not much has changed as far as I see except they’re keeping her out of sight and allowing her to speak only on the rare occasion and to handpicked questioners in tightly controlled spaces. So Bernie Sanders isn’t prioritizing or playing to minority constituencies, perhaps because he’s only ever run for office in Vermont where we really don’t exist. We might take him at his word that he really is so naive to believe that focusing on economics and other sundry big umbrella issues, miraculously soothe what ails minorities in racially charged times.
As easy as it is for more than a few of us to picture Hillary and Bill and yes, Chelsea, disparaging us very easily and even in racialized tones behind closed doors, I don’t necessarily see Sanders in that same way. I think he spouts off much the same in front of cameras as he does behind closed doors. Sure like most white folks, he consciously or unconsciously thinks he’s smarter and better than we are, but I think he’s also myopic and dare I say, naive to wholesale and retail politics on a national scale, and what that ought to look and feel like. And to the black experience in general – of which knowledge of and familiarity with does not necessarily mean a caring understanding, empathy or determination to not only even out the playing field, but work to make things so much better. So much better in fact that a black person could potentially stand a chance in the future to win again and again over Chelsea’s daughter Charlotte at school and in life. I don’t know that Hillary wants that either.
In a bid to maintain his version of ‘authenticity’ and to not be seen as ‘pandering’ or changing course midway, or seen as ‘fickle’, Sanders isn’t as expected, running out and hiring up Marc Lamont Hill, van Jones and a bunch of black for hire types to make him seem more black-focused. I don’t know if that means he just doesn’t care about us and our issues – or if he’s just obtuse to racial politics and optics played out on a national level in 2015.
Agreed, eliihaas. Hillary’s camp is behind the set up, and Sanders is really showing us who he is. We get to see them all. The Clinton’s are a low down dirty, self-entitled family who will do and say whatever it takes to get Hillary in that White House in 2016. She cannot fail again. The dynasty cannot take another fail like 2008.
I don’t like Hillary, and I certainly don’t care for Bernie Sanders. He’s so outdated, his appeal as we’ve seen to the majority Northern white liberals. He doesn’t stands a snowball’s chance in hell of winning.

What many of us forget also is that a bunch of the suddenly ‘vocal for a candidate’ black bloggers/twitterati/media going to bat for Hillary have been specifically wooed by her campaign via invites to the one cocktail with promises of more to come. I had to laugh just now as I was watching Lawrence O’Donnell who’s asking Joy Ann Reid why Hillary didn’t take the opportunity of the moment to call out Trump about his sustained vile birther attacks against President Obama.
Where have these people been? Bill Clinton answered that question on CNN. Bill said then that Trump had been ‘very kind, gracious and generous’ to him and Hillary, and that he enjoys very much golfing with Trump. Meanwhile, Trump himself told Letterman that he and the Clintons have very extensive conversations particularly some heartfelt ones after ‘the blacks’ betrayed the Clintons after everything the Clintons had done for them.
Hillary won’t dare speak one cross word about Trump. Notice all she said about Trump’s anti-Mexican tirade, was that she was ‘disappointed’. Lol. Trump and the Clintons run in the same circles and are part of that coalition of opportunistic ‘No labels’ compadres. Their only ideology is self, and their only commitment is to themselves and that which specifically boosts, enriches and elevates them..
Besides, if Hillary ever dare poke Trump, he will in his shallow, petty, gossipy way reminiscent of a fish seller in the market place, tell everything he knows about the Clintons. And trust me, Trumps knows a lot of crap about them.
When I heard Chris Matthews last night lapping up Bill Clinton, I told hubby. That MOFO’s looking to get on the good foot with the Clintons, he and his wife Kathleen. They want up in that circle soo bad, they can taste the champaigne like yesterday.
For a brief moment, I thought I saw them sitting up front at a State Dinner or WHCD gig.

I believe the Matthews’ are looking first and foremost to piggy back on Hillary’s inevitability to also propel Kathleen (she’s a woman you know), to the Congress. Hence the Mister is doing his darndest to make nice with the Clintons. But of course, singing hard hard for his supper with hopes of invites to White House dinners if Hillary gets in, isn’t terribly far-fetched..

The challenge facing Paul LePage’s defenders

The controversy surrounding Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) is still very much underway, with the threat of impeachment looming on the horizon. But for the beleaguered governor to be forced from office, LePage will have to lose the support of his fellow Republicans in large numbers. How likely is that?
The Bangor Daily News’ Mike Tipping had a good piece yesterday noting that the Maine GOP hasn’t quite made up its mind. Senate President Mike Thibodeau (R) has, to date, taken the matter seriously, saying that while he’s still acquiring information, “I am very saddened by this situation and shocked by what is being alleged.” Other GOP state lawmakers have already endorsed the investigation into LePage’s alleged misdeeds.
But Tipping stressed an important detail that’s worth remembering:
Others, the more stalwart of LePage allies, have attempted to carry the governor’s water, but that has proven a difficult thing to do. Without any real defense for what LePage did, they’re left instead attempting to smear House Speaker Mark Eves.
Ordinarily, when a politician is accused of wrongdoing, the defense from his or her backers is incredibly simple: they say the charges are baseless.
That doesn’t work in LePage’s case – he’s already admitted to doing exactly what he’s accused of doing. The governor’s supporters can’t push back against the allegations when their hero has made no effort to deny the allegations’ accuracy.
For those just joining us, let’s recap our report from last week. A Maine charter school recently hired state House Speaker Mark Eves (D). LePage, a fierce opponent of Democratic legislators, threatened the school – either fire Eves at LePage’s demand or the governor would cut off the school’s state funding. In effect, LePage played the role of a mobster saying, “It’s a nice school you have there; it’d be a shame if something happened to it.”

Why Universal Pre-K Will Be a Galvanizing Issue

At the Plum Line today, Greg Sargent argues that universal pre-K opportunities will bids fair to become “a central pillar of the liberal agenda — one that, if it is ever realized, could take its place alongside some of the great progressive reforms of the 20th Century, and possibly the Affordable Care Act, as a defining achievement of the Democratic Party.” He explains that Senate Democrats, led by Pennsylvania’s Bob Casey, are about to roll out a bill that would create a $30 billion block grant for states that committed to create a real pre-K system—financed by new rules radically restricting the revenues lost to “corporate inversions” that reclassify multinational corporate income as foreign-earned.
While Casey is talking optimistically about getting Republicans to support his bill, it’s not very likely, for reasons that actually make this a powerful partisan differentiator for 2016 and beyond. As Jonathan Chait noted in an important piece on this topic back in February, the whole idea of universal pre-K reflects a crucial social change:
Our society is still constructed as if most households still consist of a working father and a stay-at-home mother, even though that old model has mostly disappeared. The costs of caring for children too young to attend public school is overwhelming for working-class and even middle-class parents. Because many parents can hardly afford decent child care on their incomes, huge swaths of the system are horrifying and even dangerous nightmares, as Jonathan Cohn documented two years ago. Parents are forced to stash their children in understaffed and frequently unsafe facilities.
Conceived of this way, America’s child-care problem is a humanitarian disaster. It requires public subsidy because most parents cannot adequately finance their own child-care needs, just as Social Security came into existence because most Americans could not adequately provide for their own retirement. If society expects parents to work, it ought to make it possible to do so while raising children, which is a thing we want and need to happen. And this moral-justice logic is a strong enough rationale on its own.
Pre-k also, of course, has an educational rationale, and via education, an additional economic rationale beyond the contributions to the workforce of women.

Did you know that this newspaper is named for a slaveholder? It’s right there on our masthead, the name of a man who for 56 years held other human beings in bondage on his Virginia plantation — a man, according to the official Mount Vernon Web site, who “frequently utilized harsh punishment against the enslaved population, including whippings.” This dreaded symbol of oppression is delivered to the doorsteps and inboxes of hundreds of thousands of people each morning.
Sure, George Washington also emancipated his slaves in his will, won our independence and became the father of our country — but no matter. It is an outrage that this paper continues to bear the name of such a man.
It is time to rename The Washington Post!

COLUMBIA, S.C. — With protesters outside and the desk of a slain member draped in black, the South Carolina Senate voted overwhelmingly on Monday to remove the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the State House.
The 37-to-3 vote propelled the state toward a landmark moment that many hope could come within days: the lowering of the flag that has flown outside the seat of state power here for more than five decades, even as it became a symbol of the segregated South and white supremacy.
The measure, sought by the state’s Republican governor, Nikki R. Haley, was voted on just weeks after the massacre of nine people at a historic and predominantly black church in Charleston. After a final vote in the Senate, widely viewed as a formality, the legislation will go before the State House of Representatives, where the outcome is less certain. Debate on the measure is expected to begin this week.

After his xenophobic comments in his campaign kickoff, Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has become quite the lightening rod. It’s been challenging to keep up with all of the businesses that no longer want anything to do with the controversial candidate, though the list continues to grow – ESPN broke off its Trump ties yesterday.
Given the circumstances, it’s tempting to think the GOP candidate would start to walk back his anti-Mexican rhetoric, for financial reasons if no other, but yesterday, he did the exact opposite. As Bloomberg Politics reported, Trump issued a 900-word statement yesterday afternoon, telling the world how right he was when he accused Mexican immigrants of being drug-carrying rapists.

President Obama’s Succession Plan

As the former executive director of a non-profit, I can tell you that one of the tasks of any effective leader of an organization – no matter the size or mission – is to engage in succession planning. This would be even more true when a leader is term-limited in their position.
That’s why around 2007 I started looking for signs from the Bush/Cheney White House about what they were doing to lay the groundwork for a next Republican president. I have to admit that I was pretty surprised when I didn’t see any indication of plans/work on that.
On the other hand, almost as soon as he got re-elected to a second term, President Obama went to work on succession planning.
One senior Obama adviser says the administration “To Do list” after 2012 included thinking “about how you lock in the Obama coalition for Democrats going forward. Because it’s not a 100 percent certainty that they come out for the next Democrat.” Part of the answer, the adviser said, was to pursue aggressive unilateral action on “a set of issues where we have an advantage … and believe are substantively the right thing to do” and dare Republicans to oppose him.

In case you haven’t heard, BP has agreed to pay up to $18.7 billion as part of a settlement reached late last week over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The agreement, announced over the weekend, includes the US federal government, the states of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and settlement of claims made by more than 400 local government entities.
BP will pay the $18.7 billion over 18 years.
The 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster is officially registered as one of the worst oil spill disasters in an unfortunately rather lengthy history of similar devastating occurrences all over the world; The people who live in the Niger delta, for example, are just one ongoing example of a population that has had to live with resulting environmental catastrophes for decades. Their story has been documented on film more than a few times – films that were highlighted on this blog.
The Deepwater BP Oil Spill takes center stage in this specific case, in Louisiana native Nailah Jefferson’s feature documentary, “Vanishing Pearls” – a 2014 Slamdance Film Festival selection, which was picked up by ARRAY, the multi-platform distribution label of the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM), last year, and released during the spring.

A Study Documents the Paucity of Black Elected Prosecutors: Zero in Most States

WASHINGTON — Sixty-six percent of states that elect prosecutors have no blacks in those offices, a new study has found, highlighting the lack of diversity in the ranks of those entrusted to bring criminal charges and negotiate prison sentences.
About 95 percent of the 2,437 elected state and local prosecutors across the country in 2014 were white, and 79 percent were white men, according to the study, which was to be released on Tuesday by the San-Francisco-based Women Donors Network. By comparison, white men make up 31 percent of the population of the United States.
The numbers are being released as debate continues about racial imbalances in the criminal justice system in the wake of police-related deaths in Ferguson, Mo.; Staten Island; and Baltimore.
While the racial makeup of police forces across the country has been carefully documented, the diversity of prosecutors, who many law enforcement experts say exercise more influence over the legal system, has received little scrutiny. Prosecutors decide in most criminal cases whether to bring charges. And, because so many criminal cases end in plea bargains, they have a direct hand in deciding how long defendants spend behind bars.

White House Solar Plan Aims at Low- and Middle-Income People

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Tuesday will announce an initiative to help low- and middle-income Americans gain access to solar energy, part of a series of steps President Obama is taking to tackle climate change, according to administration officials.
The administration will announce that it intends to triple the capacity of solar and other renewable energy systems it installs in federally subsidized housing by 2020, make it easier for homeowners to borrow money for solar improvements and start a nationwide program to help renters gain access to solar energy, the officials said.
The actions are to be announced in Baltimore by Brian Deese, Mr. Obama’s senior adviser for climate issues, and Representative Elijah E. Cummings, the Democrat who represents the city.
Mr. Deese, in a conference call with reporters, called the moves “part of a bigger-picture effort to try to drive innovation” toward cleaner, low-carbon energy solutions.
Also to be unveiled on Tuesday are commitments totaling more than $520 million from charities, investors, states and cities to pay for solar and energy-efficiency projects for lower-income communities.

‘Army of Moms’ Starts Patrolling South Side After Shooting

ENGLEWOOD — An army of mothers started patrolling their neighborhood on Monday, gathering on corners after a shooting.
Mothers Against Senseless Killings volunteers in pink shirts were sitting in folding chairs and leaning against a mailbox at 75th Street and Harvard Avenue on Monday, hoping to prevent a violent retaliation after the death of Lucille Barnes a week ago.
“People are very emotional about it, and we don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Tamar Manasseh. “If people say there will be violence, there likely will be violence, and you go where you’re called.”
According to police, a man walked by Barnes and two other women at 11:35 p.m. on June 23 in the 7500 block of Stewart Avenue and opened fire, fatally wounding 34-year-old Barnes.
Manasseh mobilized the group for the first time after the shooting on the gamble that even the most embittered and determined on vengeance would not shoot under the glare of a motherly eye — let alone 15 sets of maternal eyes.
