The Whatnauts were an American soul group from Baltimore, Maryland founded in 1969. George Kerr produced them. The group had several hit singles in the early 1970s, including the socially conscious single “Message From A Black Man” in 1970 on A&I International, “Please Make The Love Go Away” also in 1970 but on Stang, and their biggest success “I’ll Erase Away Your Pain” in 1971. They performed with fellow Stang artists The Moments for the hit single “Girls” in 1974.
The Whatnauts’ music has been sampled by numerous musicians including their hit “I’ll Erase Away Your Pain” in Kanye West‘s “Late” (2005); “Why Can’t People Be Colors Too?” from 1974 sampled in “Oh My God” by A Tribe Called Quest featuring Busta Rhymes (1993); and “Help Is on the Way” (written by James S.Carter & recorded by The Whatnauts) from 1981 in both ”

Rubio: Obama has no class

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) accused President Obama of having “no class” during an interview Wednesday morning on Fox News, citing a selfie-stick video and interviews with YouTube stars.
When asked if Donald Trump is conducting himself beneath the office of the presidency, the Florida presidential hopeful said that the presidency has to be conducted in a “dignified way, with a level of class.”
After Rubio panned Trump for behavior that isn’t “dignified or worthy of the office he seeks,” he pivoted to Obama.
“We already have a president now that has no class,” Rubio said.
“We have a president now that does selfie-stick videos, that invites YouTube stars there, people that eat cereal out of a bathtub.”

Scott Walker, the ‘uniter’?

In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker (R) has adopted a strategy that’s worked pretty well for him. Slate’s Jamelle Bouie summarized it simply as “divide and conquer.”
Reporting on the Republican’s message in Iowa, Bouie noted earlier this year that Walker delivered an “effective, unwavering, and uncompromising” message to conservative activists. The governor believes he’s won statewide office – twice, in a state President Obama carried twice – by rallying far-right voters and pushing an unapologetic, aggressively partisan agenda.
It came as a bit of a surprise, then, when the AP reported yesterday that the Walker campaign sees the candidate as a “uniter.”
Scott Walker’s top adviser said Tuesday that the Republican governor who survived an attempt to recall him from office is running for president as someone who can bring together a polarized electorate.
“I think he is running as a uniter,” Walker adviser Rick Wiley said during a luncheon hosted by the political website Wispolitics.com.
As proof, Wiley pointed to Walker’s victory in his 2012 recall election. “If he’s able to unite this state and win that recall when it was the most polarized state at the time,” Wiley argued, “his message works.”
It’s a bizarre argument. Walker was so polarizing, pushing such a radical agenda, that a big chunk of his constituents tried to force him from office hallway through his first term. The governor held on, but not before drawing the ire of nearly half of Wisconsin.
“See what a uniter he is?” one of Walker’s top aides effectively asks.

The BBC just began a documentary series (a real one, not the crap foisted upon us by History or Discovery) entitled “Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners.” Written and presented by historian David Olusoga, it details Britain’s abolition of slavery, and how much it cost the country.
A commission was empaneled to determine compensation. The compensation had a budget of £20 million. In today’s money, according to Measuring Worth, that amounts from almost £2 billion at the low end to almost £80 billion at the high end. (What’s a few billion among friends?)
Of course, here’s the thing: the outlay wasn’t to compensate the 800,000 slaves. It was to compensate the slave owners.
And oh, don’t think that slave owners were relegated to a 1% class. Yes, they were the chief owners. But what the documentary shows is that slave ownership permeated all strata of society, from the aristocracy to the middle classes, from dukes to doctors to parsons to widows. There were thousands of letters written to try to cajole more money out of the commission in recompense, along the lines of “I’m a poor man and depend on my annuity for my income.”

Angry’ man with loaded AR-15 terrifies bystanders in quarrel with black protester at Confederate statue

A White man wearing shorts and flip-flops carried a loaded AR-15 to confront a black man who was protesting a Confederate memorial in a Texas town.
Willie Hudspeth carried a sign reading, “Please move statue to Confederate museum. God said ‘Love everybody,’” during his protest Monday evening on the town square in Denton, reported the Denton Record-Chronicle.
The 69-year-old activist, who has protested the memorial for at least 15 years, said a younger man openly carrying a rifle confronted him as he spoke cordially with another resident who supported the Confederate memorial — which had been vandalized earlier that morning with graffiti that said, “This is racist.”
The younger man, who later identified himself as 22-year-old Stephen Passariello, strode up to Hudspeth and Adam Rinkleff while carrying the military-style rifle and shouted “counterprotest.”

Nelson George’s Misty Copeland Documentary – A Ballerina’s Tale’ – Picked Up by Sundance Selects for Fall Release

Sundance Selects has acquired U.S. rights to Nelson George’s documentary, “A Ballerina’s Tale” – a film about one of the most notable and trailblazing figures in the ballet world, Misty Copeland.
Directed and written by Nelson George, the film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.
Produced by Leslie Norville and executive produced by Dorria L. Ball, Ingrid Graham and Copeland, the film provides a behind-the-curtain look at the daily life of Copeland, the first African American female soloist at New York’s American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in two decades. On June 30, 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in ABT’s 75-year history.
Sundance Selects will release the film in theaters and on VOD on October 14.

FOX has set Wednesday nights at 8PM (right before “Empire”) as the time-slot for its new medical drama “Rosewood,” which stars Morris Chestnut, this fall.
Chestnut plays the title character, Rosewood – as in Dr. Beaumont Rosewood – a gifted, charismatic pathologist, and the best at what he does in all of Miami (FL), who owns one of the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art independent labs in the country, and finds the secrets in corpses that others usually miss. Despite being constantly surrounded by death, Rosewood is obsessed with life and savors every moment. His eternal optimism frustrates the cynical female detective he often works with (played by Jaina Lee Ortiz), but she can’t argue with the results that his unique perspective provides.
Announced today, Nicole Ari Parker has been cast in a recurring role on the upcoming series, playing Rosewood’s attractive and successful new girlfriend Kat Crawford, who is described as a highly sought-after psychologist specializing in PTSD who often counsels police, soldiers and others who regularly encounter violence.

Black Beauty History–See The Valmor Products Exhibit + My Panel On Friday July 24!

This week has been exciting and busy, and I feel like I’m almost experiencing a full circle moment in my blogging career. In 2013, I wrote a blog post about Black Beauty History, focusing on these products of yore — click here to check that out.
Back in 2013, I did a lot of online research but ultimately didn’t uncover the treasure trove of information I had hoped to find. But right now – until August 2, so HURRY if you’re interested in black beauty history – there’s a phenomenal exhibit on display at the Chicago Cultural Center titled Love For Sale: The Graphic Art of Valmor Products. The exhibition reveals the roots of Valmor as a beauty brand, as well as its development of products for magical and occult purposes. Brand creator Morton Neumann believed in the power of love and luck, and his products made bold promises to the consumer. It’s amazing to see the tiny product labels of yore, blown up to such magnified size, curated as an exhibit that spans from the company’s earliest origins to an explanation of how things ended.
The exhibit is curated by the delightful and informative historian Tim Samuelson. This weekend, the Chicago Cultural Center will host a symposium around the exhibit, titled Race, Magic, Mojo: Explorations of Culture, Identity and Spirituality. And yours truly will participate in a panel called Watu Wazuri/Beautiful People: African-American Hairdressing and Beauty as Social Meaning and Style on Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm. I’ll be speaking alongside a truly impressive selection of artists and academics, and the symposium continues Saturday with additional panels and a gallery talk with Tim Samuelson. As mentioned in my 2013 post, Charles C. Dawson did much of the artwork but received little of the credit for Valmor Products labels. In this exhibit, Dawson’s work shines. The work of several other significant African American artists is also given great recognition and much deserved respect.

It didn’t get too much attention, but Citibank received some pretty awful news yesterday. The banking powerhouse was accused of pushing dubious credit card services, presented to millions of consumers in unfortunate ways (charging consumers during “free” 30-day trial periods, for example).
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which exists thanks to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and the Dodd-Frank reform law, noticed the Citibank practices and went after the banking giant, accusing it of “deceptive marketing,” “unfair billing,” and “other unlawful practices.” Yesterday, Citibank cried uncle – it will pay $700 million to affected consumers, on top of $35 million in penalties.
A few hours later, Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued an interesting press release.
On the fourth anniversary of the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas-04) have introduced legislation to eliminate it. […]
“Don’t let the name fool you, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau does little to protect consumers…” Sen. Cruz stated.
The argument might even seem true, were it not for all of the success the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has had in protecting consumers. Indeed, that’s very likely the point of Cruz’s new bill – the CFPB appears to be too effective for many conservatives in cracking down on financial-sector excesses.

As Bernie Sanders rises, attacks from the right get ugly

Last September, facing an unexpectedly tough re-election fight, Sen. Pat Roberts was getting a little desperate. The Kansas Republican, struggling in the polls, decided the way to hold onto his seat was to become as brazenly right-wing as possible, telling one audience, “We have to change course because our country is heading for national socialism.”
It was a curious moment. Pat Roberts, after spending more than three decades on Capitol Hill, was either arguing that America is headed towards Nazism or was using the phrase “national socialism” without knowing what it means.
About a year later, the phrase has popped up once more. National Review, ostensibly one of the leading media outlets in U.S. conservatism, published this piece from Kevin Williiamson about Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) presidential campaign.
In the Bernieverse, there’s a whole lot of nationalism mixed up in the socialism. He is, in fact, leading a national-socialist movement, which is a queasy and uncomfortable thing to write about a man who is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and whose family was murdered in the Holocaust. But there is no other way to characterize his views and his politics.
Is that so. When describing the Vermont senator’s liberal approach to politics, Williiamson and National Review are effectively powerless – they must reference national socialism. There is, the author assures us, “no other way.”
Remember, unlike Pat Roberts, Williiamson isn’t just throwing the phrase around unknowingly. This is deliberate – the conservative is connecting the liberal candidate to the phrase most commonly associated with the Nazi’s political system.

Hackers remotely kill a Jeep on a highway – while I am in it.
I was driving 70 mph on the edge of downtown St. Louis when the exploit began to take hold.
Though I hadn’t touched the dashboard, the vents in the Jeep Cherokee started blasting cold air at the maximum setting, chilling the sweat on my back through the in-seat climate control system. Next the radio switched to the local hip hop station and began blaring Skee-lo at full volume. I spun the control knob left and hit the power button, to no avail. Then the windshield wipers turned on, and wiper fluid blurred the glass.
As I tried to cope with all this, a picture of the two hackers performing these stunts appeared on the car’s digital display: Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, wearing their trademark track suits. A nice touch, I thought.

Black Woman Locked In Psych Ward For 8 Days Because Cops Couldn’t Believe She’s A Businesswoman

An African American business woman from Long Island was drugged and locked in a hospital psych ward for eight days because first police, and then doctors could not believe her high-powered career was real.
The hideous ordeal began last September as 32-year-old former Citigroup banker Kam Brock drove her BMW through Harlem. The NYPD pulled her over, accused her of being high on marijuana and impounded her car. No weed was ever found in the vehicle.
The next day, she went to pick up her vehicle and confronted officers about her treatment. She was forcibly sedated, cuffed, and sent to Harlem Hospital. On arrival, she was locked up in the psych ward as an ‘Emotionally Disturbed’ person.
“Next thing you know, the police held onto me, the doctor stuck me with a needle and I was knocked out,” Brock recalls. “I woke up to them taking off my underwear and then went out again. I woke up the next day in a hospital robe.”
But this was only the beginning of her nightmare. As the New York Daily News reports:
Kam Brock’s frightening eight-day ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ ordeal at the mental facility included forced injections of powerful sedatives and demands she down doses of lithium, medical records obtained through her suit filed in Manhattan Federal Court show.
