about Trump and his use of language. thought this was a good way ot looking at it, from BJ:

The flipside of that is what’s telling. Trump isn’t afraid to skip the dogwhistle and go straight for the meaty insulting term; what we’re seeing on the other side is horror that a) someone would be honest about the xenophobia, racism, sexism, etc etc and b) having someone be that honest shows the rest up as at one just as bigoted – but embarrassed about it and trying to cover it up.

They’re realizing that Trump is blowing the lid off Atwater’s way of getting around saying unacceptable things; and that contrary to Atwater’s original thinking, “niCLANG niCLANG” is still an effective way to reach a not-insignificant portion of the electorate. So the people using dogwhistle are being made to look just as bad to anyone who was mollified by the dogwhistle even a few months ago, and the people who tolerated the dogwhistle as a means to get their racist sexist anti-Otherist way are running to the guy who doesn’t bother with the code words. Trump may spell the end of the Southern Strategy and its abuse of language.

Haven’t been watching tv, lately. is there any coverage at all of PBO’s trip to Africa? Or more freak shows of Trump?

    • Morning!

I haven’t seen anything. I’ve been following online and trying to keep up with the Sandra Bland case.

    • Liza says:

Ametia, the only TV news show I watch is “Democracy Now” and, yes, Amy Goodman is covering PBO’s trip to Africa. She’s also doing good some very good coverage on Sandra Bland, but as I’ve said before, no one has covered police brutality on television as well as Amy Goodman.

    • eliihass says:

There’s been a bit of coverage on BBC especially since they got a preview interview before the Africa trip.

I’m one who’s a bit turned off partly because I think FLOTUS should have been included in this historic trip.

How on earth does the President return to Kenya for a historic first visit and FLOTUS is not part of the visit?

Not only doesn’t it look right, it perpetuates all those negative narratives that sadly, the White House makes no effort to correct or tamp down.

And she ends up taking a big hit for it, and being accused and called every name in the book – because nobody bothered to provide context – not even to say she’s committed to the Special Olympics since last year to be there for the opening.

But aside from the fact that the White House did little to showcase her ties to the Special Olympics, (including a dinner at the White House with the Special Olympics committee), they hardly promoted her opening the event. It pretty much went unnoticed.

But then again the question is why would this important historic trip not be planned better to include the President’s wife and partner of so many years? Why is the National Security Adviser playing companion to the First Lady of Kenya when we have a perfectly capable FLOTUS? I can understand her not being on trips to other countries without such important familial ties, but this was one that every effort should have been made to ensure she was a big part of.

To be honest, it doesn’t look good and I’m not happy about this. This is wrong and makes me very sad. FLOTUS deserves better. This first black First Lady deserves so much better.

Have not seen anything about the response from Latinos of Jeb basically saying that he doesn’t support a path to citizenship for the undocumented.

Oh, you can stay, work, pay taxes, but you’ll never be a citizen.

Am I the only one looking side eye at this?

But, because he said it in Frank Luntz-approved ‘respectful’ language, it’s supposed to be all good?

Tom Cruise Pulls Off the Impossible in Unbelievable ‘Lip Sync Battle’ With Jimmy Fallon

Giving his best performance since he serenaded Kelly McGillis in a bar in “Top Gun,” Tom Cruise dominated the “Lip Sync Battle” against Jimmy Fallon on Monday’s “Tonight Show.”

“Tonight I am facing off against one of the biggest movie stars of all time,” the late-night host announced, before Cruise came out in force.

“My first song has been on the top of the charts all summer long, it’s the song of the summer,” the “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” action star said as he took the mic for The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Cruise didn’t need any of the costumes or props that have become commonplace on the Spike spinoff show, as he expertly channeled the band with intense facial expressions and slick hand gestures.
