HBO Boss Says Issa Rae’s Series Casting Now, Slightly Different in Tone from Web Series, Don’t Expect Until 2016/2017

    By Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and ActJuly 30, 2015 at 7:22PM

HBO is making its presentation at the ongoing TCA (Television Critics Association) summer event as I type this, and, thankfully, there are journalists live-tweeting it, as the cable TV network’s CEO Richard Plepler, and its president of programming Michael Lombardo, drop news on returning and upcoming new series.

Of interest to this blog, it’s been revealed that Issa Rae’s series, which was officially given a pilot order earlier this year, likely won’t be coming to a TV screen near you until late 2016, or even early 2017. So, sadly, if you were expecting something next TV season (2015/2016) – although you really shouldn’t have been, if you’ve been reading this blog – you’ll have to update your calendar to reflect today’s news.

Of course, the pilot, once complete, still has to be ordered to series. So, assuming HBO loves the pilot and wants a full series (cross your fingers), don’t expect to see anything until, at the earliest, the 2016/2017 TV season. Lombardo did say that he’s “very hopeful” that the pilot will be good, adding that casting is happening right now, for a shoot that will happen later this year. And finally, wonderfully, Issa Rae will play herself in the show, which Lombardo says will be “slightly different in tone” from the web series that inspired it – “Awkward Black Girl.”

It was in August 2013 when it was first revealed that Issa Rae was developing a series for HBO, created by she and funnyman (and now late night host) Larry Wilmore, which was to focus on “the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern day African-American woman,” as was officially described at the time.

Skip ahead to earlier this year, when it was announced that HBO had given a pilot order for the project, which will be titled “Insecure,” and which Issa Rae will star in, as well as write, along with Wilmore. To be produced by 3 Arts, the firm managing both Wilmore and Rae, the project attracted the talents of music video director, Melina Matsoukas, who will helm the pilot, making her TV directing debut.

TV Casting News for Blair Underwood, Wyatt Cenac, Edi Gathegi, Regina King, Ato Essandoh, Dion Johnstone, Others…By Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and ActJuly 31, 2015 at 10:59AM

Some TV casting news you can use, not previously posted on this blog…

First, Agent May’s ex-husband will join the series once more in its third season! Blair Underwood will return for multiple episodes in the third season of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3 premieres Tuesday, September 29 at 9 PM ET on ABC. In the aftermath of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s battle with Jiaying and the Inhumans, Director Coulson will search the world for more powered people and will face threats unlike the world has ever seen. However, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will soon find out they’re not the only ones tracking down these new Inhumans.

Second, TBS has set the cast for its ensemble alien abduction comedy pilot “The Group” from The Office creator Greg Daniels. Former “Daily Show” correspondent and writer Wyatt Cenac will play a Wyatt Jones, described as a serious journalist in the town of Beacon who is pulled into covering the alien abductions that have been occurring.

Third, Edi Gathegi has joined the cast of “The Blacklist” on NBC to play a character named Mr. Solomon who, according to exec producer John Eisendrath, “is going to be entering the series’ landscape and not in a friendly in any way to Liz or Red or the people they care about. In fact, Mr. Solomon puts someone close to Red in a very vulnerable position that could compromise everyone’s safety.” “The Blacklist” returns Thursday, Sept. 24 at 9/8c on NBC.

OWN Beefs Up Original Scripted Series Slate with Megachurch Drama From ‘Lost,’ ‘Six Feet Under’ Writer/Producer

By Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and Act

    July 30, 2015 at 2:18PM

For those who were worried that OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, was going to become the Tyler Perry Network (given that at least 4 Tyler Perry branded original series currently call OWN home), here’s some more news that should cheer you up.

Announced via press release, OWN has given a straight-to-series order for what it calls a megachurch drama titled “Greenleaf,” which will be scripted, and will unfold over a 13-episode season.

The project comes from Craig Wright (“Six Feet Under,” “Lost”), and will follow “the unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch, where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful. Greenleaf described is the center of the community for the thousands of predominantly African-American members who attend services there. But beneath its steeple lies a den of iniquity — greed, adultery, sibling rivalry and conflicting values.”

I initially thought that the project was based on a real-life Greenleaf family, but that doesn’t appear to be the case, although I won’t be surprised if Wright, a former minister himself, who will write the scripts and executive produce alongside Winfrey, finds some inspiration from real life.

Bill Duke has signed up to direct a dramedy centered on a wealthy, dysfunctional African American family, titled “Killing Daniel,” from newcomer screenwriter Matthew Dressel, set up at Darius Films.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows a young man seeking to reconnect with his siblings after their father’s death, only to find out that they all want to kill him for his sizeable share of the estate.

Nicholas Tabarrok is producing “Killing Daniel.”

An early 2016 shoot date is eyed. No word on casting yet.

    BIKING WHILE BLACK
Black twins deemed suspicious and subjected to a police stop for riding bicycles in Pennsylvania suburbs. #BlackLivesMatter #TheMainLine

My African American sons (twins) were riding their bicycles with a friend in the Greens of Waynesboro (a Philadelphia suburban neighborhood) Friday afternoon. The boys were videotaped and followed through your neighborhood for approximately ten minutes by a white woman with short dark brown/black hair who was driving a white Jeep SUV.

My sons are fifteen years old boy scouts who attend the Lawrenceville School and Friend’s Central. They have friends who live in the Greens of Waynesboro. They are actively involved in our church, and unlike many children their age, they opted to go swimming at a friend’s house and ride bikes (rather than play video games) that day.

As they were leaving your neighborhood two police cars stopped them because “suspicious” activity had been reported. The boys were sandwiched in between the cars and terrified. Their information was taken and a police incident report was filed. When I heard about this I went to the police station and was told that there have been some burglaries in the area. The complainant was worried because she was going to be leaving town and the boys had on back packs (which contained their wet swim suits and towels)

But we all know that the real reason the call was made to the police was because they are black. I understand that there have been several recent burglaries in your community and everyone is on a heightened sense of alert because of that. However, I am grateful that a friend has agreed to share this letter with your community because I want you to understand the kind of heightened alert I am on every day and every time my sons leave the safety of their home.

To the woman who was following and videotaping my sons, you frightened two young men who have lived in this community their whole lives. Please explain to me why my sons were so frightening and suspicious? Do you fear every child riding a bicycle in your community? Are backpacks the Berwyn PA equivalent of a hoodie?

Please understand where my heightened alert comes from. Whatever you think of the Trayvon Martin verdict several things are clear. The young black man (who is now dead) was perceived as one who was “suspicious and did not belong in that community”. These are the words that were told to the police about my boys.

To the parents in the Greens at Waynesboro, how would you feel knowing that a stranger has a video tape of your children. How would you feel knowing that there is now a police incident report with your children’s names, address and birthdays permanently a part of an official record? How would you feel if your children tell you now that they no longer feel comfortable going to their friends’ homes, or riding their bicycles?

Lawsuit Alleges San Jose Police Racially Profiled Black Family
    21 hours ago

A federal lawsuit filed Monday levels new racial profiling allegations against the San Jose Police Department.

The suit, filed by African-American couple Emmanuel Stephens and Jasmine Whitley, claims that the Stephens and his two daughters were followed while driving before an officer drew his gun on the family outside their home. The only reason police targeted Stephens, according to the lawsuit, was because of his race.
    […]
On Oct. 30, 2014, Stephens said he picked up his daughters Davian, 14, and Emani, 7, from school and took them to a mini-mart to get snacks. Officer Alexander Keller saw them at the store and followed the family to their Almaden Valley home.

After Stephens pulled up outside the home, Emani left the car to get the mail, while Davian went in through the house to open the garage door. Then, according to the lawsuit, Officer Keller leapt from his patrol car with his gun drawn.

“Put your hands up!” Officer Keller yelled at Stephens, according to the lawsuit. “Get back, get back.”

Stephens asked what was going on.

“Shut up before I tase you,” Keller allegedly responded.

Emani burst into tears and ran inside to get her mom, Whitley said, telling her that “police have a gun and they’re going to take daddy to jail.”

Whitley said she ran outside to see Keller shoving her husband into his patrol car. When she asked why he was being detained, Keller allegedly yelled at her to “get on the curb and shut up.”

Because of Keller’s behavior, Whitley said she told her daughter to go find a cellphone to record the incident. But Keller stopped the girl in her tracks, according to the case filing, telling her: “If you leave, I’m arresting you too and taking you to juvenile hall.”

Keller held the family for about 20 minutes before two other officers arrived, Stephens said. Whitley said Officer Kevin Cassidy told her that police had received a call about a suspicious black man with a purple backpack.

“We get calls about once a week about suspicious black people and have to check it out to see what’s going on,” Cassidy allegedly told her. “This happens a lot with black people over here.”

Meanwhile, Keller searched the family’s car, which turned up a container of medical marijuana prescribed to Whitley. Whitley showed police her ID and medical marijuana card, but Keller cited her for possession anyway.

Police have declined to comment on the incident, at least for the time being. San Jose Inside has requested more information about what happened that day, as well as the possession charge against Whitley.

Republicans see opportunities with a changing – and skeptical – black electorate
    July 31 at 6:00 AM

Cleveland was no place to be a Republican on Nov. 6, 2012. It started out well: The Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan presidential ticket made a surprise Election Day fly-in, thanks to internal polling that had the campaign thinking that it would take Ohio, and the White House. Then the votes came in, and Rob Frost, chairman of the Cuyahoga County Republican Party, watched precinct after precinct build President Obama’s lead. The historic lines of black voters, bent around city blocks, had made the difference.

“We still saw a lot of strong support for Romney,” Frost remembered. “We thought enough had been done to carry Ohio. To say we were surprised by the result would be an understatement. Our faith was shaken, and we said, okay: We’d had a blind spot here.”

Frost, who has chaired the party in his urban county for 10 years, began an aggressive campaign of black voter outreach. So did much of the Republican Party. Friday, former Florida governor Jeb Bush will appear before the National Urban League’s annual conference in Fort Lauderdale, in his home state, where he plans to talk about how his education reforms helped black students, his removal of the Confederate flag from the state capitol and his gubernatorial record on diversity: During his tenure, he will tell the crowd, “we increased the number of black Floridians serving in the judiciary by 43 percent” and “the state’s use of minority-owned businesses tripled.”

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, the only black candidate in the 2016 race, will also address the gathering, then head to an Illinois conference of black conservatives. Carson, Bush and the wider GOP see an opportunity to win black votes from a Democratic Party that will not be led by President Obama for much longer.

“We still saw a lot of strong support for Romney,”

Give me some data. I remember all those (Republican) folks without data saying Romney was going to win the election. When Nate Silver says it, maybe it bears some truth. If a GOP gasbag says it, well……..

    • Liza says:

“The African American activists, though, remain unimpressed. They say all of the candidates continue to fall back on tired talking points, speaking in broad strokes about civil rights without delivering a concrete agenda.”

This is painfully true and one would be hard pressed to find a politician who did not prefer broad stroke talking points to a concrete agenda. This is where the black activists need to inject their own agenda and the more specific the better.

And one more thing. If I hear another politician, in this case Hillary Clinton, talk about building trust between police and communities I might walk out my front door and just start screaming. Here’s an idea for y’all politicians regarding the policing crisis. INDICT THE F**KING KILLERS!! And prosecute them at the federal level whether or not the state indicts them. And there’s more. These cops, you know the ones who may not kill people but come close by beating them and injuring or maiming them, and even the ones who are just out there harassing and intimidating people, CHARGE THEM WITH A CRIME and FIRE THEM from the police department they work for with no chance for re-hire ever again (from here to eternity) in ANY law enforcement agency. It ain’t rocket science, folks.

Building trust, WTF is that anyhow? We have a block party with the local cops or what? We have focus groups? Meetups? Ride-alongs? What?

    • Liza says:

Yeah, his brother Dubya and his “faith based initiatives.” This is supposed to appeal to black voters? A prison bankrolled by a faith based initiative? Dear Lord, throw me a line. This clown wants to be president?

Hillary Clinton didn’t use Jeb Bush’s name on Friday, but her attack on the former Florida governor was hardly veiled as she spoke ahead of him at a gathering of African-American activists in Florida.

“I don’t think you can credibly say that everyone has a right to rise and then say you’re for phasing out Medicare or for repealing Obamacare. People can’t rise if they can’t afford health care,” Clinton said at the National Urban League’s annual conference in Fort Lauderdale, alluding to Right to Rise, the super-PAC backing Bush’s candidacy. “They can’t rise if the minimum wage is too low to live on. They can’t rise if their governor makes it harder for them to get a college education. And you cannot seriously talk about the right to rise and support laws that deny the right to vote.”

HILLSDALE, Mo. – It’s the resting place of famous African American leaders, musicians, and athletes. But to anyone passing by, Greenwood Cemetery in Hillsdale, Missouri, has looked more like an overgrown forest for years.

NewsChannel 5 learned the owners of Greenwood Cemetery just recently avoided a tax auction- after failing to pay years of back taxes. Now, relatives of those buried there are calling for management to clean up.

As she searches for the graves of her ancestors in Greenwood Cemetery, Marcelina Williams says many of the 50,000 people buried there appear to have been forgotten.

“You can see washers, dryers, tires… they’ve made it into a dumping ground instead of hallowed ground,” Williams, who has at least two relatives are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, said.

Much of the 32-acres of the cemetery is almost completely wooded over. Williams says when she comes to visit her relatives, she stays in the parking lot because her car won’t make it down the uneven gravel roads.
