Scott began her performing career as a spoken word artist, appearing at live poetry readings to perform her work. She was eventually discovered by Amir “Questlove” Thompson of the Roots. Questlove invited her to join the band in the studio. The collaboration resulted in a co-writing credit for Scott on the song, “You Got Me”. In 2000, Erykah Badu and the Roots won a Grammy for best rap performance by a duo or group for “You Got Me”, and Scott debuted as an artist during a Roots live show, singing as original artist/singer of the song.[9] Subsequently, Scott collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common, and broadened her performing experience by touring Canada in a production of the Broadway musical Rent.
Scott was the first artist signed to Steve McKeever’s ‘Hidden Beach Recordings’ label. Her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 was released in 2000. She experienced some notice and chart success with the single “A Long Walk”, eventually earning a Grammy nomination in early 2003 for Best Female Vocal Performance. Scott lost that award, but won a 2005 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for “Cross My Mind”. The live album, Experience: Jill Scott 826+, was released November 2001. Scott’s second full-length album, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2, followed in 2004.
Scott continues to write poetry; a compilation volume of her poems, The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours, was published and released by St. Martin’s Press in April 2005.[10]
In early 2007, Scott was featured on the George Benson & Al Jarreau collaboration single “God Bless The Child” (written by Billie Holiday), which earned Scott her second Grammy award, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, at the 2007 Grammy Awards ceremony. Scott shared the win with Benson & Jarreau. In 2006, Scott was prominently featured on hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco’s single “Daydreaming”, which won a 2008 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance and also appeared on a new Scott collection called Collaborations on January 30, 2007.[11][12]
The Collaborations collection served as “an appetizer” for her next studio album, The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 released September 25, 2007.[13] A clip of the title track was released on a bonus disc from Hidden Beach Records and included with Collaborations. The lead single “Hate on Me”, gained airplay in May 2007 with a video released in mid-July. In advance of the album’s release, Hidden Beach released a 17-minute album sampler through their forums.[14] Interspersed between the dozen songs previewed on the sampler was a personal explanation from Jill for the inspiration behind some of her songs.
In 2008, Scott released her second live album, Live in Paris+, which consists of 8 songs recorded during her set list of the “Big Beautiful Tour” in Europe. The bonus DVD contains the same concert, plus some live cuts from The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3. In the same year, “Whenever You’re Around”, a single from The Real Thing, which features George Duke, was a moderate hit on urban radio.

Probation May Sound Light, but Punishments Can Land Hard

BALTIMORE — On Christmas Day in 2013, Donyelle Hall and her husband, Roland Jr., gave a party for friends and family at their apartment. Mrs. Hall, a nurse’s aide for the severely disabled, had recently taken a college course in medical terminology to improve her earning potential. Mr. Hall worked as a kitchen manager. The two had married the year before.
Mrs. Hall had gifts ready for each guest — pajamas for her mother, new boots for her two grown sons. Well before midnight, the party wound down, and Mrs. Hall, who had been drinking wine, got in the car with her husband to drive two guests home. She was 40 at the time, had zero points for bad driving on her license, and had never been in trouble with the law. That was about to change.
She was stopped for speeding, failed a breathalyzer test, and was charged with drunken driving. She pleaded guilty in exchange for entering a probation program under which, provided she followed the rules, she would avoid a conviction.
But over the next 18 months, Mrs. Hall would find herself in trouble again and again, though she committed no new crimes. She spent countless hours attending court and lost thousands of dollars in fees, legal costs and wages, as well as two jobs. The judge handling her case imposed conditions far harsher than the norm, then repeatedly called Mrs. Hall into court for violations like failing to ask permission before moving to a different unit in her apartment complex.

Bernie Sanders will likely represent the hard-line Left in 2016. Will he help or hurt the movement?

Shortly after 9 a.m. on the second Saturday in May, at the altar of a massive, ornate church in Northampton, Massachusetts, a lanky, white-haired reverend named Todd Weir assumes the pulpit. His congregation is hosting a conference celebrating the 10th anniversary of the grassroots organization Progressive Democrats of America. Before him sits an audience of several hundred. In the course of welcoming them to the church, Weir directs their attention to a bronze relief of the fire-breathing, 18th-century theologian Jonathan Edwards. “Edwards preached over and over again about the dangers of the concentration of wealth and power that were happening here in the Connecticut River Valley,” he says. “I think he would be here today with the Progressive Democrats of America, saying, ‘Run, Bernie, Run!’ ”
The image of Jonathan Edwards—a Puritan in a white powdered wig—stumping for the socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in front of progressive diehards wearing hiking boots has hardly settled in our minds when, several minutes later, a man in a cowboy hat takes the podium and begins whipping the crowd into an even more frenzied state. “I’m happy to be here with you rompin’ stompin’ scrappy ‘n’ savvy attendees, you corporate greed-whackers and butt-kickers,” twangs the populist Texan radio host Jim Hightower. A few more minutes of inspirational preamble follow before he introduces the guest of honor: that “hell-raiser extraordinaire who drives the Koch-head corporate plutocrats crazy.”

Not long after the showdown with Vitter, I sit with Sanders on a couch in Harry Reid’s foyer outside the Senate floor to discuss his highly specific vision for the Left. In recent months, Sanders has indicated he’s willing to use his fire-and-brimstone act not simply to influence a presidential election, but also to lay the groundwork for something of a “political revolution.” “Let me ask you,” he says, his gangly frame struggling to contain itself to our couch, “what is the largest voting bloc in America? Is it gay people? No. Is it African-Americans? No. Hispanics? No. What?” Answer: “White working-class people.” Bring them back into the liberal fold, he figures, and you’ve got your revolution.
Hearing this focus on white voters from a left-winger sounds odd in 2014. Over the past two presidential-election cycles, Barack Obama has cobbled together a coalition of outsiders—women, minorities, yuppies, and young people. In 2012, he won the lowest percentage of white voters for a Democratic candidate in 20 years. Especially with the country’s Hispanic population increasing, many Democrats view the Obama coalition as one that will only grow stronger with time. But Sanders, and those around him, are not impressed. “The Obama way,” says the senator’s former chief of staff, Huck Gutman, now an English professor at the University of Vermont, “doesn’t build a lasting coalition. It wins you an election. Obama wins the election and then he runs into all this resistance. He does not have the country behind him.” (Yes, Sanders’s former chief of staff teaches 19th-century American poetry.)

When ‘moderate’ is a relative term

When Senate Republicans voted to defund Planned Parenthood late yesterday afternoon, the process unfolded exactly as expected – with one exception. Every senator on the floor voted as everyone assumed they’d vote, except Sen. Susan Collins (R) of Maine.
Collins, ostensibly the Senate GOP’s most moderate member, had expressed opposition to the bill in recent days, leading observers to assume she’d vote against the bill. But while Maine’s junior senator, Independent Angus King, voted with the Democratic minority, Collins raised a few eyebrows by siding with the far-right Republican majority.
The Portland Press Herald reported:
Collins issued a statement late Monday saying that she and Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, had introduced legislation that would “promote and protect women’s health and also investigate Planned Parenthood’s practices.”
“I was sickened when I viewed the recently released videos featuring Planned Parenthood physicians…” Collins said on the Senate floor. “The callousness that the Planned Parenthood employees displayed in discussing the sale of fetal tissue is appalling.
Of course, rhetorical tone isn’t a good reason to cut off funding for popular and effective health care organizations. Collins said she had an alternative proposal – “investigate Planned Parenthood facilities that participate in fetal tissue donation, and defund them if they broke the law” – but Senate GOP leaders ignored Collins’ bill.
That left the Maine Republican with a choice: vote to defund Planned Parenthood, knowing the bill would fail, and knowing there’s no evidence the group actually did anything wrong, or side with her far-right colleagues. She chose the latter.
And while it’s probably fair to characterize Collins as the Senate GOP’s most centrist member, yesterday was a reminder that the label just doesn’t mean much anymore.

Let’s Get This Party Nomination Started

Well, we can begin to talk about who will make the cut and who will not for entry into the first Republican presidential debate in Cleveland on Thursday. With the NBC/WSJ poll coming in and showing mostly bad news for politicians across the board, there are still some who are getting ready to breath a sigh of relief.
It looks like Chris Christie and John Kasich will avoid disaster and a seat at the kiddie table. On the other hand, first degree felony-indicted Rick Perry should probably wrap up his second “Oops” try at this.
Here’s the expected cut, and I’ll have some observations below:
1.Trump: 23.2%
2.Undecided/Other: 16.2%
3.Bush: 12.8%
4.Walker: 10.6%
5.Carson: 6.6%
6.Huckabee: 6.6%
7.Cruz: 6.2%
8.Rubio: 5.2%
9.Paul: 4.8%
10.Christie: 3.4%
11.Kasich: 2.8%
Not making the cut:
1.Perry: 2.0%
2.Santorum: 1.4%
3.Jindal: 1.2%
4.Fiorina: 1.0%
5.Graham: 0.4%
6.Pataki: 0.2%
7.Gilmore: 0.2%
When you look at this average of polls, you can see that 83.8% of respondents express support for at least one of these candidates, but 16.4% of them do not. That’s not a terribly high number considering that it’s so early and a lot of people either don’t know some of the candidates or want to take a wait-and-see approach before throwing their support behind anyone.
As for the folks who have been relegated to the kiddie table, they collectively have managed to get the support of only 8.6% of the Republican base. What this means is that about 75% of poll respondents are backing a candidate who will be on the Fox News debate stage, while 25% are not. In such a wide field, 25% is a big chunk of change. It exceeds the number of people who have throw their hat in Donald Trump’s three-ring circus.
Another way of looking at these numbers is to evaluate how the media-ordained frontrunners are doing. What should stand out immediately is that Marco Rubio and Rand Paul are polling below fellow senator Ted Cruz.
Now, Rand Paul is a special case because of his unorthodox views on the several issues, but Marco Rubio is a darling of the Republican establishment and the Beltway press. So far, though, he isn’t showing us much.
Now, there’s really only one guy on this whole list that everyone can imagine being president, and that’s Jeb Bush. We know that he has the connections and experience to staff up an administration and do the nuts and bolts aspects of running the country. That doesn’t mean he’d be popular, successful, or make decisions any better than his brother, but he meets the basic plausibility test better than Ben Carson, let’s put it that way. Yet, 87% of the Republican base is expressing support either for someone else or for no one at all. So, while Jeb can take comfort in the fact that he’s in second place and that only enormously implausible Donald Trump is ahead of him, he still has to recognize the magnitude of the rejection he’s getting in these poll numbers. Just based on name recognition alone, Jeb should be dominating these polls, and he’s not.
Scott Walker should be similarly disappointed that about 90% of voters are picking someone else or no one at all. But he’s probably in the best position here. There’s a huge anyone-but-a-Bush electorate out there, but the anyone-but-Walker contingent is extremely small. He has good reason to hope that as his name recognition grows, so will his support.
Now, lastly, I want to discuss governors Chris Christie of New Jersey and John Kasich of Ohio. They both made the cut, which was especially crucial for Kasich because the debate will be held in his home state. What they have is executive experience. And their experience is current, unlike the gubernatorial experience of Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee. In this, their main competitor is Scott Walker. Their job is to outshine Walker somehow and become the main alternative to Jeb. The culture warriors, Carson and Huckabee, will have life in Iowa but not much beyond it. The senators, Cruz, Paul, and Rubio, will be saddled with their association with Congress. So, if anyone at the bottom of this list has real potential to rise to the top, it’s Christie and Kasich.

Charles Koch’s focus on ‘injustices’ is fueled by an unlikely partnership

DANA POINT, Calif. — Last month, billionaire industrialist and conservative donor Charles Koch was meeting in his Wichita office with Michael Lomax, president of the United Negro College Fund, when the conversation turned to the recent church massacre in Charleston, S.C.
“The reaction of the people in that community, I mean, blew me away,” Koch recounted Monday in a rare interview with The Washington Post. “I said, ‘These people are a lot better than I am.’ Forgive this guy? I mean, it’s so monstrous what he did. It just shook me.”
That July meeting helps illustrate why Koch invoked the memory of movements such as the fight for civil rights during a weekend speech to conservative donors here, comparing those struggles to efforts to roll back government regulations.
It drew mockery on the left, but the comparison, along with Koch’s frequent references to “injustices,” shows how he is drawing from his unlikely partnership with Lomax. The theme of helping the disenfranchised dominated the weekend gathering, part of a larger effort by the Koch political network to cast off its image as an operation driven by mega-donors.
“We have found a way of working together,” said Lomax, who joined in the interview with Koch. “And we’re going to influence each other, because we are going to talk.”

Agnes Fenton turned 110 on Saturday, according to NorthJersey.com.
In a 2005 interview, Fenton said she drank three Miller High Lifes and a shot of Johnnie Walker Blue Label every day for more than 70 years. At this point, her daily dose of booze is history because she doesn’t eat as much anymore. However, when asked if her caregivers would let her take a shot of Johnnie Walker for her birthday she said, “They better.”

A police officer in Alabama proposed murdering a black resident and creating bogus evidence to suggest the killing was in self-defence, the Guardian has learned.
Officer Troy Middlebrooks kept his job and continues to patrol Alexander City after authorities there paid the man $35,000 to avoid being publicly sued over the incident. Middlebrooks, a veteran of the US marines, said the man “needs a god damn bullet” and allegedly referred to him as “that nigger”, after becoming frustrated that the man was not punished more harshly over a prior run-in.
The payment was made to the black resident, Vincent Bias, after a secret recording of Middlebrooks’s remarks was played to police chiefs and the mayor. Elected city councillors said they were not consulted. A copy of the recording was obtained by the Guardian.

And so all we need is to dispense with an actual primary contest, crown our fore-ordained nominee, sprinkle some liberal pixie dust on a fawning electorate, then presto! we crush Republicans in 2016. Chris Wallace tapped the black three-ring binder resting on the corner of his desk. “I’ve got some doozies in there,” he said, eyebrow raised provocatively.
The unlabeled binder holds the veteran Fox News anchor’s questions for Thursday’s Republican primary debate, for which he will serve as a moderator. Clamped inside it are newspaper clippings, memos to his researcher and outlines of what the hodgepodge of presidential candidates vying to top the GOP field have been saying about the issues and about each other.
It has become a primary-season ritual for Wallace, a fixture at Fox News for more than a decade, to challenge and goad the packed roster of Republican candidates. But this debate in Cleveland, the first of the 2016 election season, may be in a league of its own.

GOP campaign against Planned Parenthood just getting started

The Republican crusade against Planned Parenthood reached the Senate floor late yesterday afternoon, with a GOP bill to strip the health care organization of its federal funding. As expected, it failed at the hands of a Democratic filibuster, but an even more important fight is on the horizon.
The roll call on the yesterday’s vote is online here. Note, one Republican broke ranks and opposed the measure (Illinois’ Mark Kirk), while two Democrats sided with the GOP majority (West Virginia’s Joe Manchin and Indiana’s Joe Donnelly). The final tally was technically 53-46, but that came after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell switched from “yea” to “nay” for procedural reasons.
What arguably matters more at this point is what Republicans intend to do next. Politico reported overnight:
Republicans are divided over whether they should use this fall’s government funding bill to attack Planned Parenthood – and risk a high-stakes shutdown fight – after Senate Democrats blocked a standalone bill to defund the organization on Monday evening.
On one side is presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who’s pushing Republicans to do everything within their power to strip the organization of federal support after Monday’s bill failed to clear a filibuster, 53-46. But a group of veteran Republican legislators is urging a more cautious approach, and reminding GOP colleagues that just two years ago their fight to defund Obamacare via a government funding bill produced a disastrous shutdown without making a dent on the Affordable Care Act.
The prospect of a shutdown over Planned Parenthood is quite real. Indeed, the dominant, far-right voices in the party speak as if they practically have no choice – the recently released, deceptively edited attack videos targeting the health care organization have so enraged the far-right that the GOP has already effectively committed itself to an angry confrontation.
But some in the Republican leadership seem to realize it’s a confrontation that the party can’t win.

Poll: Clinton’s favorability takes a major hit
Hillary Clinton’s favorability is sinking further underwater, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Monday night.
The Democratic presidential candidate is viewed unfavorably by 48 percent of likely voters, compared with 37 percent who view her favorably.
Her ratings are down significantly from the last NBC/WSJ poll in June, when 44 percent viewed Clinton favorably versus 40 percent who viewed her unfavorably.
These numbers will certainly add to the consternation already permeating Democratic circles following a recent Quinnipiac University poll which showed Clinton’s favorability drowning in key swing states.
NBC News points out that Clinton’s fav/unfav ratio, while worse than Barack Obama’s throughout his presidency, is identical to her husband Bill Clinton’s score heading into the Democratic nomination in ’92.
Pollster Bill McInturff compared Clinton’s campaign to a battleship able to withstand several torpedo strikes, “but there has been a torpedo that has hit something, and there are some leaks.”
Despite her low favorability numbers, Clinton remains the clear frontrunner among the current field of Democratic presidential candidates.
