Dear Republicans: You could have avoided this whole Donald Trump disaster

The consensus among many of our wisest political observers is that
Trump-ism is a real phenomenon, that it’s here to stay for the near
future, and that it may pose a real long-term risk to the GOP. In a
piece entitled, “Can the Republican Party survive Donald Trump?” Molly Ball reports that GOP donors and strategists are fretting that Trump has exposed the GOP’s “fault lines” on immigration in ways that could do the party untold damage in 2016.
And Time magazine reports that GOP pollster Frank Luntz held a focus group designed to plumb the sources of Trump’s appeal, and left stunned. “You guys understand how significant this is?” Luntz said afterwards. “This is real. I’m having trouble processing it. Like, my legs are shaking.”
So here’s a friendly reminder: this whole Trump mess probably could have been avoided. If Republicans had simply held votes on immigration reform in 2013 or in early 2014, it probably would have passed. That likely would have made it harder for Trump-ism to take hold to the degree it has so far.
Before you ridicule me for suggesting that Republicans would be better off today if they had simply done what I wanted them to do — pass immigration reform — please recall that GOP leaders themselves said at the time that they wanted to pass immigration reform. Even reform that included a path to legalization for the 11 million.

Marco Rubio: Eliminating the capital gains tax will help bartenders like my father

It’s
widely assumed that most of the GOP presidential candidates will
eventually roll out tax plans that cut taxes across the board, including
at the very top. Yet the GOP candidates have also signaled that they
see a greater need than in previous cycles to have an agenda to address
inequality.
How Republicans reconcile these two things will be a
key dynamic to watch. And one candidate to pay close attention to in
this regard is Marco Rubio, who early on in the cycle gave speeches
about inequality and challenges facing the middle class, yet has also proposed a tax plan that would eliminate taxes on capital gains, dividends, and estates.
Rubio
has argued that he’d be just the person to take on Hillary Clinton over
who will help struggling wage earners because he was once one himself.
“If I’m our nominee,” Rubio said at the GOP debate, “how is Hillary Clinton going to lecture me about living paycheck to paycheck?”
Now Rubio has demonstrated how he’ll use his biography to defend his tax plan. In an interview with John Harwood, he was asked how people who live paycheck to paycheck will receive his tax plan:

that once you factor in its elimination of taxes on capital gains,
dividends, and estates, what’s left is a tax cut that is hugely

How Obama’s active second term is shaping the 2016 presidential race

“President Obama is the anti-lame duck,” Kevin Drum writes today.
By way of illustration, Drum compiles a list of all of the actions Obama has taken since Dems got washed out in the 2014 midterms, in order to demonstrate how active his presidency has been thus far in his second term:
1. Normalized relations with Cuba.
2. Signed a climate deal with China.
3. Issued new EPA ozone rules.
4. Successfully argued in favor of same-sex marriage before the Supreme Court.
5. Put in place economic sanctions on Russia that have Vladimir Putin reeling.
6. Pressured the FCC to approve net neutrality rules.
7. Issued new EPA coal regulations.
8. Issued an executive order on immigration.
9. Got fast track authority for TPP and seems poised to pass it.
10. Signed a nuclear deal with Iran and appears on track to get it passed.
11. Won yet another Supreme Court case keeping Obamacare intact.
12. Issued new rules that increase the number of “managers” who qualify for overtime pay.
13. Presided over the birth of twin giant panda babies at Washington, D.C.’s, National Zoo.
What’s particularly striking is how many of these major moves have been embraced by likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and have been opposed by the 2016 GOP presidential candidates — and will thus form the basis for the broad contrasts that will drive next year’s presidential race. (I’ve taken the liberty of bolding the initiatives above that fall into this category.)
The long term prospects of many of these Obama initiatives will depend on whether the next president will build on them or instead will try to roll them back. Clinton has endorsed efforts to normalize relations with Cuba and has come out in support of the nuclear deal with Iran; the 2016 GOP candidates have pledged to undo both immediately upon taking office. Clinton has pledged to protect Obama’s new EPA rules limiting carbon emissions and other actions he’s taken on climate; Republicans have vowed to fight them.
That last one feeds into another major accomplishment that Obama may still rack up that is not on the above list: the achievement of a global climate deal later this year in Paris, in which major economies all pledge to reduce their carbon emissions. Clinton will propose doing what it takes for us to keep our end of the bargain; the 2016 GOP candidates — who already oppose the new EPA rules that will be key to whether we succeed in doing that — are likely to vow to withdraw U.S. participation in it.

What remains to be seen is whether Trump’s bluster will color Latinos’ views of the GOP, and how far the eventual nominee will have gravitated towards his positions along the way.

Trump and the early-state problem

Donald Trump’s media domination is virtually wiping out a good number of candidates, threatening their positions in the next debate and their fundraising. He certainly is not going to get the nomination with 75 percent of Republicans opposed to him, but he can and is doing real damage to many alternatives.
Let’s take New Hampshire. For now Trump leads big. But the real news is that the slew of grassroots competitors and moderate 0r libertarian-ish candidates who must win there have virtually disappeared. In the RealClearPolitics average the only candidates above 6 (!) percent other than Trump are Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Jeb Bush. Likewise in Iowa, Walker, who must win there after making it his priority, is down to third place in the RCP average. If he, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Rick Santorum don’t win there (or in Iowa) are they kaput? Unless they have hard-money dollars to keep campaign operations going the answer is probably yes. Few donors are going to give more money to candidates who have finished out of the running in the early, small states where an outsider can most effectively level the playing field. Moreover, the percentage required to compete in the debates will go up, putting them literally out of view to most viewers.

James Holmes Sentenced to 3,000+ Years
James Holmes was sentenced to serve life in prison plus an additional 3,318 years on Wednesday, which is the maximum allowed by the law. Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. said “get the defendant out of my courtroom, please,” prompting big applause in the room. Holmes will serve 12 life sentences and the rest of the years come from a combined 70 convictions of attempted murder and six years for having an explosive.

Maybe the most salacious bit of news revealed at FX’s Television Critics Assn. (TCA) press tour last month, star Lady Gaga will “romance” Angela Bassett’s character in “American Horror Story: Hotel” as Gaga’s character’s alter ego is bisexual. Gaga’s character will actually romance a number of other characters on the show, including Matt Bomer and Cheyenne Jackson, exec producer Ryan Murphy revealed, adding that the upcoming 5th season of the hit anthology series, like the first 2 seasons, “taps into the ‘trapped’ horror trope, although not all the action will be Hotel-based.”
Bassett will play Ramona Royale, a film star who used to have a romantic relationship with The Countess (Gaga), and wants revenge. Says Bassett to Entertainment Weekly, “They are powerful women at opposite sides and at odds with one another, each believing that they’re right.”

So no one thinks that the coalition of 65-69 million American citizens with a proven record of WINNING back to back presidential elections in record numbers, because they organize, stand in line for hours in rain and frost, MUST be feverishly re-activated for the next election? Of course it must.
Yet thus far none of the Democratic Party candidates has seriously courted the Obama-Coalition. I say seriously, precisely because it took more than the letter “D” beside a candidate’s name, or political platitudes, or a liberal wish-tree to put the coalition together in the first place. Plus no one size fits all in activating this coalition, as its different components were motivated by different strategies of persuasion. This is a coalition that did not care about name, pedigree, or size of wallet when it backed the insurgent Obama candidacy. It did not have its head in the clouds in a lofty quest for unicorns either.

Sure, detractors mocked Obama supporters for chanting the amorphous slogan of “Change you can believe in” or “Yes we can.” But beyond the slogans, Obama supporters were in pursuit of realistic tangible goals –
*End the War in Iraq,
*Transform the economic structure to benefit the Middle Class (made even more urgent when the financial system nearly collapsed in Fall 2008)
*Healthcare Overhaul became a key component of economic restructuring because its cost was a major driver of decline of Middle Class economic security.
*Advance alternative energy imperative to neutralize Middle Eastern oil stranglehold on our economy.

Candidate Obama’s appeal was not instant but grew as he practically demonstrated that he knew how to get from point A to point B with an achievable plan. He also showed us that he could use novel metrics to move us off our duffs to get us sitting at the conversation table, to actually talk and listen to each other in order to accomplish verifiable tasks.

For RNC, How’d It Go So Wrong?

After Mitt Romney lost badly in the 2012 presidential election, the Republican National Committee decided to sit down and do some soul-searching and some research. The result was a lengthy paper called the Growth and Opportunity Project. More than anything, it was an attempt to explain why the party had lost the most recent election and to offer some corrective actions that would enable the party to stop making the same mistakes. Right from the beginning, in the introduction, the authors were blunt about where the party stood and how they were faring with the youth and minority constituencies.
Public perception of the Party is at record lows. Young voters are increasingly rolling their eyes at what the Party represents, and many minorities wrongly think that Republicans do not like them or want them in the country. When someone rolls their eyes at us, they are not likely to open their ears to us.
Of course, now comes the collective freak out about Mexican immigrants and a party front-runner in Donald Trump who explicitly says that he doesn’t want Mexicans in this country.
The report was also unsparing about the lack of fresh ideas coming out of the conservative movement.
At our core, Republicans have comfortably remained the Party of Reagan without figuring out what comes next. Ronald Reagan is a Republican hero and role model who was first elected 33 years ago— meaning no one under the age of 51 today was old enough to vote for Reagan when he first ran for President. Our Party knows how to appeal to older voters, but we have lost our way with younger ones. We sound increasingly out of touch.
As Mike Gerson and Pete Wehner wrote recently, “It is no wonder that Republican policies can seem stale; they are very nearly identical to those offered up by the Party more than 30 years ago. For Republicans to design an agenda that applies to the conditions of 1980 is as if Ronald Reagan designed his agenda for conditions that existed in the Truman years.”
They seemed out of touch so they decided to go on a Benghazi witchhunt for the next three years, obsess over gay marriage cakes, attack Obamacare with an endless stream of hopeless legal cases, and make Mexicans their top priority domestic agenda item. This was supposed to resonate with the youth vote in what way?

After Shooting, Alleged Gunman Details Grievances in ‘Suicide Notes’

A man claiming to be Bryce Williams called ABC News over the last few weeks, saying he wanted to pitch a story, and wanted to fax information. He never told ABC News what the story was. This morning, a fax was in the machine (time stamped 8:26 a.m.) almost two hours after the shooting. A little after 10 a.m., he called again, and introduced himself as Bryce, but also said his legal name was Vester Lee Flanagan, and that he shot two people this morning. While on the phone, he said authorities are “after me,” and “all over the place.” He hung up. ABC News contacted the authorities immediately and provided them with the fax.
In the 23-page document faxed to ABC News, the writer says “MY NAME IS BRYCE WILLIAMS” and his legal name is Vester Lee Flanagan II” He writes what triggered today’s carnage was his reaction to the racism of the Charleston church shooting:
“Why did I do it? I put down a deposit for a gun on 6/19/15. The Church shooting in Charleston happened on 6/17/15…”
“What sent me over the top was the church shooting. And my hollow point bullets have the victims’ initials on them.”

Josh Duggar entering sex rehab
One week after Josh Duggar admitted to infidelity and having a porn addiction comes news that he is entering a rehab facility.
In Touch magazine, the magazine who broke the story about his molestation scandal, broke news that Josh is entering a “faith-based rehab” for sex addiction. The Duggar family wouldn’t say exactly why he was checking into the facility, only to say it’s a “long-term treatment center.”
“His wrong choices have deeply hurt his precious wife and children and have negatively affected so many others. He has also brought great insult to the values and faith we hold dear,” the family said in a statement.

On Mississippi’s shore, what Katrina erased not yet replaced
LONG BEACH, Miss. — Between Mississippi’s seashore and the railroad tracks a little ways inland, where Hurricane Katrina all but erased a neighborhood 10 years ago, Efrem Garza and a handful of other homeowners are still resettling a frontier.
Once lined with houses and a small condominium complex, South Seashore Avenue in Long Beach was ravaged by wind and waves in 2005. Running from the beach highway to railroad tracks paralleling the shoreline — a zone of maximum destruction along the Mississippi coast — it was on the front lines of the storm’s fury.
Before Katrina, 10 houses and the condos stood between Garza’s house and the beach highway, U.S. 90. Now only two houses stand there, giving Garza a new, clear view of the Mississippi Sound from the breakfast table in his rebuilt home.
“It’s come back very slowly,” he said.
The storm leveled Garza’s house and others near the beach, pushed a giant wall of debris halfway up the block and flooded the houses closer to the railroad track’s elevated barrier.
Empty concrete slabs from vanished houses still linger on some lots. “For Sale” signs that sprouted after the storm still dot the roadway.
Although the overall population of Mississippi’s three coastal counties — Hancock, Harrison and Jackson — is now higher than before the storm, in many neighborhoods closest to the water the overgrown lots and empty slabs speak to a much slower recovery.

Megyn Kelly demands Cornel West explain why #BlackLivesMatter doesn’t protest black-on-black violence
The movement, West said, protests state-sponsored violence, as black-on-black crime is an economic problem

In her return to television Monday night, Megyn Kelly discussed the #BlackLivesMatter movement with Cornel West, but because she’s still on Fox News, she had to frame the conversation in terms of black-on-black violence.
To this end, Kelly opened by playing the video of Peggy Hubbard that went viral this weekend, in which the Navy veteran excoriated the black community for not protesting the death of 9-year-old Jamyla Bolden.
“They’re hollering police brutality,” Hubbard said in the video viewed by over 7 million people. “Are you fucking kidding me? Police brutality? How about black brutality. You black people, my black people, you are the most violent motherfuckers I have ever seen in my life. A little girl is dead. You say black lives matter? Her life mattered. Her dreams mattered — yet you trifling motherfuckers are out there tearing up the neighborhood I grew up in.”
West ventured that Hubbard’s “traumatized, terrorized, and is certainly right to have the kind of empathy she does in terms of the death taking place in black communities. But we have to distinguish between state-sponsored violence and violence against black people owing to actions black people do to each other. Both are important, but they’re not the same thing.”
West continued, saying that the black community is in a “state of siege, a state of emergency like the brother Dr. Carson talks about” in his recent USA Today op-ed.
“You agree with Ben Carson?” Kelly asked.
“He’s right about the state of emergency, he’s right about the need for quality education, and he’s certainly right that we must have jobs with a living wage,” West replied. “But at the same time, we can’t get that with the way society is organized at this point. This is where brother Bernie Sanders comes in.”

Rubio takes a hard line against fetal-tissue research

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) sat down with CNBC’s John Harwood yesterday, and the senator continued to stress his interest in “21st -century” policies. The report noted, however, that the Republican presidential candidate doesn’t believe in climate change; he still opposes marriage equality; and he would ban all abortions, even in cases of rape.
It led to an interesting exchange:
HARWOOD: We need 20th-century social policies?
RUBIO: Well [brief pause], but, for, well, let me tell you this, human life is worthy of protection in every era.
It is a foundational hurdle for the Florida Republican. On the one hand, Rubio, the youngest candidate in the massive GOP field, is preoccupied with talking about the future and the importance of forward-thinking ideas. On the other hand, Rubio is eager to move the nation backwards on many of the social issues he cares about most. The contradiction is at the heart of his entire national candidacy.
Indeed, in the same interview, Harwood pressed for additional details on the senator’s social agenda, asking if Rubio believes fetal-tissue research is wrong. “I do,” the candidate replied.
Asked to clarify further if he sees the scientific research itself as “wrong and immoral,” Rubio responded, “I believe it is,” adding that the research is the “byproduct of the death of an unborn child.”
The answer didn’t come as too big of a surprise – Rubio is very conservative – but it’s emblematic of a larger shift in Republican politics.
Remember, as of a couple of months ago, fetal-tissue research wasn’t on the political world’s radar at all. The potentially life-saving science enjoyed broad and bipartisan support, and when it was authorized by Congress decades ago, the vote in the Senate was 93 to 4.
In the years since, there’s been no organized effort by GOP officials to change the law or curtail the medical research.

Nation Needs Cheaper Way to Find Worst People
MINNEAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report)—With U.S. Presidential elections now costing more than five billion dollars, there must be a cheaper way to find the worst people in the country, experts believe.
According to Davis Logsdon, a political scientist at the University of Minnesota, the United States could use current technology to find the nation’s most reprehensible people at a fraction of the five-billion-dollar price tag.
“Any search for the worst people in the country should logically begin one place: on Twitter,” said Logsdon, who recommends scouring the social network for users who consistently show signs of narcissistic-personality disorder, poor impulse control, and other traits common to odious people.
Once a comprehensive list of those Twitter users is compiled, Logsdon said, it could be cross-referenced with a database containing the names of people who have presided over spectacular business failures, have been the target of multiple ethics probes, or are currently under indictment for a broad array of criminal offenses.
“After we crunch the numbers and find the twelve or so worst people in our database, we could then put them on television to demonstrate just how awful they are as people,” said Logsdon, who noted that that part of the current system “works very well.”

This is funny, but there is an amazing amount of truth here. So many of the misdeeds of presidential candidates just get lost in endless news cycles especially on the conservative side. Like Jeb Bush, for example. Why isn’t anyone talking about the Florida voter purge that preceded the 2000 presidential election that wrongfully disenfranchised thousands of voters? And his membership in PNAC? Cross referencing databases that store this kind of information forever is not such a bad idea.

It’s a mistake to see Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump as a popular national figure. He’s not. In fact, polls show most Americans find him quite distasteful. But like Nickelback, Trump has cultivated a core following that adores him, even if the rest of the country finds the affection hard to understand.
For Trump critics, his relative success is a little mysterious. It’s easy to look at his crowds and wonder, “What are they thinking?”
With this in mind, Time magazine reported yesterday on a Frank Luntz focus group, held in the D.C. area, with self-identified Trump backers, to get a better sense of their perspective.
This 29-person focus group, conducted by Luntz and observed by a group of national press reporters from behind a pane of one-way glass, had gathered to explain the phenomenon of Trump. Why is a billionaire real estate mogul, TV celebrity and oft-accused demagogue who has never held office leading the Republican field with some 22% support in the polls? […]
At the end of the session, the vast majority said they liked Trump more than when they walked in. “You guys understand how significant this is?” Luntz asked the press breathlessly when he came back into the room behind the glass. “This is real. I’m having trouble processing it. Like, my legs are shaking.”
The article is a little jarring. In fact, it included an entry for the 2015 Quote of the Year: “We know his goal is to make America great again,” a woman said. “It’s on his hat.”
To be sure, focus groups are not scientific surveys with random samples. In this case, it’s the opposite – every participant supported Trump before the discussion even began. There’s obviously no reason to be too surprised when a candidate’s backers sing his praises.
But again, the point isn’t to understand whether Trump has supporters, but rather, why.
“I think America is pissed. Trump’s the first person that came out and voiced exactly what everybody’s been saying all along,” one man, quoted in the Time article, said. “When he talks, deep down somewhere you’re going, ‘Holy crap, someone is thinking the same way I am.’”
Another added, “When Trump talks, it may not be presented in a pristine, PC way, but we’ve been having that crap pushed to us for the past 40 years! He’s saying what needs to be said.”
There was also this gem:
The crowd in the room was angriest about national security. Nearly all of them, it appeared, had an unshakeable feeling that U.S. border was porous as a sieve and that the very things that once defined the nation: army, border and national pride – were fading. They complained of America’s reduced standing in the world, and Obama’s apparent ineptitude in challenging Russia, Syria and ISIS.
The Washington Post had a report about a month ago noting that Trump’s surge is based in large part on low-information voters. The focus group seems to suggest there’s something to the thesis.

Christie struggles with his biggest foe: indifference

Under normal circumstances, when someone has an organized group of critics, and those foes decide to quit, that’s great news. Few of us want to face rhetorical attacks, so when opponents pack and go home, it’s a welcome development.
But not always.
A super-PAC called Stop Chris Christie is shutting down, saying the New Jersey governor’s campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is so underwhelming that opposition is no longer necessary.
“We looked at the polls and all the indicators seem to be showing that Chris Christie is going nowhere fast,” Tom Bjorklund, treasurer of the political-action committee, said in interview. “It’s always difficult to make the case for stopping someone who isn’t doing well.”
It’s arguably the most painful of all possible insults: we don’t care enough about you to bother criticizing you.
As the Bloomberg Politics report makes clear, the Stop Chris Christie super PAC wasn’t exactly a powerhouse. It was started by activists on the right who saw the New Jersey governor as insufficiently conservative, but the group’s fundraising was anemic.

A group of kindergarten students in Houston found themselves on the receiving end of a protest on their first day of school because they attended a bilingual school.
Protesters targeted the Houston Independent School District (HISD) where the children ages 4 to 5 were attending an Arabic immersion program which teaches normal curriculum in the Arabic language for half of the school day.
“Everything I needed to know about Islam I learned from Muslims on 9-11-2001,” one sign read. “Qatar out of our school,” another sign stated. […]
Protesters told the Houston Chronicle that they don’t have problems with “other immersion schools or with independent Arabic language classes, but said the school was anti-American, and that immigrants should be ‘assimilated.’”
The population at the Arabic school is about 30 percent Hispanic, 30 percent white, and 30 percent African American, according to the HISD news blog.
Apparently you’re anti-American if you teach the same material as every other school but do so in a bilingual manner.

But what about the black women superheroes? Storm is probably the most mainstream right now, if only due to the X-Men movie franchise, as played by Halle Berry. But there are certainly others.
For example, there’s Vixen (alter-ego – Mari Jiwe McCab) – a female super-hero from the fictional African nation of Zambesi, whose superhero powers include using her Tantu Totem to channel the powers of animals in the animal kingdom, so she’s able to mimic the abilities of any animal that has ever lived on Earth. Nice powers to have.

Marcy Borders, the woman who became known as the “Dust Lady” from the iconic 9/11 image taken of her, dazed and covered in ash, after the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, has died of stomach cancer, according to her family. She was 42.
“I can’t believe my sister is gone,” Borders’ brother Michael Borders wrote on Facebook of her death Monday. The mother of two was a native and lifelong resident of Bayonne, N.J. She was diagnosed with cancer last August and had been undergoing treatments, according to NJ.com.

Ted Cruz: there is a ‘war on faith’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) declared people of faith under assault Friday, rallying evangelical voters at an hours-long event and sparring with an Academy-Award nominated actress over gay rights at the Iowa state fair.
Cruz, looking to gain traction in an early voting state with a heavy concentration of evangelical Christians, held a highly organized and produced “Rally for Religious Liberty” Friday night. The rally featured live music, interviews with people who said their religious liberty was violated and sermon-like speeches from Cruz, who tried to cement himself as the candidate of choice for evangelical voters in a crowded Republican primary field.
“There is a war on faith in America today,” Cruz said, later noting that 54 million evangelical Christians stayed home during the 2012 election.

Cruz has said that 2016 will be a “religious liberty election,” and is working to woo the religious right, which has a strong constituency here, in the early voting state of South Carolina and in the rest of the South, which is set to play a major role in the Republican nominating contest.
Here in Iowa, 57 percent of Republican caucus-goers identified as evangelical Christians, according to entrance polls. Cruz has been courting faith leaders here, dispatching his father Rafael, a pastor, to speak at events around the state and announcing Friday that he wants to recruit a pastor in each of Iowa’s 99 counties to do faith outreach.

It’s difficult at this stage in the Republican presidential race to see Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) as a top-tier contender. In the crowded field for the GOP nomination, Cruz is closer to the middle of the pack in most polling, and he has very little backing from the party establishment.
But the far-right senator’s plan appears to be coming together, and it’s fairly credible. Indeed, RedState’s Erick Erickson, a prominent figure in Republican media, said just last week that Cruz “has a very plausible path to the nomination.”
Part of Cruz’s strategy is clearly based on cozying up to Donald Trump, and hoping to pick up many of his supporters if/when the GOP frontrunner falters before voters start showing up. If Trump benefits from positioning himself as an enemy of Republican insiders, Cruz can easily make the case that he’s cut from the same cloth.
As Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) national ambitions appear increasingly unrealistic, Team Cruz also believes it can bring Paul’s backers into the fold. Indeed, top officials on the Texan’s team have already begun “quietly reaching out to Rand Paul’s early supporters and endorsers,” making their case in one-on-one meetings.
Cruz also sees himself as a possible Tea Party favorite, and the Associated Press reported Saturday that Cruz was “the hands-down favorite of an Americans for Prosperity gathering this weekend, if the number and volume of ovations during the speeches of five presidential candidates who addressed the summit of Tea Party activists was the measure.”
But perhaps the biggest piece of the puzzle for the Republican senator is social conservatives and the religious right movement. MSNBC’s Emma Margolin reported yesterday:

Jeb trips over ‘women’s health issues’ yet again

It was earlier this month when Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush not only went after Planned Parenthood for reasons he couldn’t explain, he also said publicly, “I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues.”
A day later, the former governor said he’d strip the health care organization of funding, but would then “redirect those funds to other women’s health” groups. This approach, Bush added, would be “in line with my Florida record.” As it turns out, that wasn’t entirely true.
Any way the GOP candidate could make this just a little worse? Of course there is.
Jeb Bush attacked Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, doubling down on his assertion that the organization should not receive any federal funding because it’s not actually tackling women’s health issues.
“I, for one, don’t think Planned Parenthood ought to get a penny though, and that’s the difference because they’re not actually doing women’s health issues,” the Republican presidential candidate said.
Unprompted, Bush added that Planned Parenthood is “involved in something way, way different than” women’s health issues.

After sabotage letter, Cotton wants US to ‘speak with one voice’

Congressional Republicans are unanimous in their opposition to the international nuclear agreement with Iran, but even among GOP lawmakers, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) stands out as unique. Arguably no American lawmaker has done more to undermine U.S. foreign policy than the right-wing freshman.
This week, as support for the diplomatic deal grows on Capitol Hill, opponents confronted the very real possibility that a Republican bill to derail the agreement may not even get the 60 votes it needs in the Senate to overcome a Democratic filibuster. This in turn led Cotton to issue a fascinating press statement (via Salon’s Simon Maloy).
“First, the president did an end-run around the Constitution by refusing to submit the Iran deal as a treaty requiring a two-thirds vote of the Senate for approval. Now Harry Reid wants to deny the American people a voice entirely by blocking an up-or-down vote on this terrible deal. […]
“The Congress and the president should speak with one voice when it comes to dealing with the Iranians, but it seems that Harry Reid believes that only his and the president’s voices matter.”
Tom Cotton, in case anyone has forgotten, wrote a letter to Iranian officials in March, telling them not to trust U.S. officials, all in the hopes of sabotaging American foreign policy and derailing the international diplomatic talks. The Republican senator corralled 46 of his GOP Senate colleagues to join him in this dangerous stunt, which according to our allies, had the effect of helping Iran during delicate negotiations and embarrassing the United States.
