Phoenix’s Channel 12 newscaster Vanessa Ruiz, who was born in Miami and grew up in Colombia, ruffled some (probably mostly white) feathers because of the way she pronounces Spanish on the air: like a native speaker.
Ms. Ruiz, who was raised in a bilingual household, said some viewers had questioned her way of pronouncing Spanish words. Sandra Kotzambasis, the station’s news director, said viewers were asking why Ms. Ruiz ‘rolled her Rs.’

WASHINGTON — If the oil and gas industry wants to prevent its opponents from slowing its efforts to drill in more places, it must be prepared to employ tactics like digging up embarrassing tidbits about environmentalists and liberal celebrities, a veteran Washington political consultant told a room full of industry executives in a speech that was secretly recorded.
The blunt advice from the consultant, Richard Berman, the founder and chief executive of the Washington-based Berman & Company consulting firm, came as Mr. Berman solicited up to $3 million from oil and gas industry executives to finance an advertising and public relations campaign called Big Green Radicals.
The company executives, Mr. Berman said in his speech, must be willing to exploit emotions like fear, greed and anger and turn them against the environmental groups. And major corporations secretly financing such a campaign should not worry about offending the general public because “you can either win ugly or lose pretty,” he said.

How an Ohio reporter helped convict more than 100 rapists
On a recent Tuesday morning, members of the DNA Cold Case task force in Cleveland, Ohio, gathered for their weekly meeting. The conference room filled with detectives, prosecutors, a crime analyst, several victim advocates—and one journalist. Rachel Dissell is a reporter for The Plain Dealer, one of two who first uncovered and wrote about neglected rape kits at the Cleveland Police Department in 2010. Dissell has been covering the ongoing story ever since.
The meeting started as it usually does with “all hands on deck” cases—the ones running up against the statute of limitations—then moved to other open investigations. Cleveland is not the first city to tackle a rape kit backlog, but it is one of the only municipalities to investigate every case so doggedly. Since 2011, when the city began sending rape kits to the state’s crime lab, almost all of its 4,000 kits have been tested; of these, over 1,600 contained usable DNA. Three hundred and fifty cases have led to grand jury indictments, and as of this month, over 100 rapists have been convicted, some of multiple rapes.
Timothy McGinty, the Cuyahoga County prosecutor who created and oversees the rape kit task force, attributed its existence to Dissell and her former reporting partner, Leila Atassi. “Rachel and her partner started this,” McGinty told CJR. “They are really the reason we are where we are.”
It’s an exemplary instance of local reporting, responsive government officials, and public support coming together to make a community safer. Bruce Shapiro, executive director of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, calls Dissell’s work an “unusually positive use of investigative reporting.”

What’s Up With Mormons and Design Blogs?

This post is a little off the usual faire you’ll find here, I hope you’ll indulge me.
Have you noticed that tons of design blogs are written by Mormons/former Mormons? What’s the deal with that? It’s sort of a hush-hush topic I hear whispered about at blogging conferences.
As a Mormon myself, I think about this from time to time and I get asked about it a lot. There are a few theories I’ve heard. Emily of Design Star wrote about it here. She thinks her creativity came from having limited resources in a big family. From having to shop at thrift stores and ingeniously remake the purchases, not because it was cool, but because that’s what they could afford. So featuring clever DIYs on a design blog is second nature for Mormons. No doubt there’s something to this idea.
My sister has her own theory. She feels like there are a lot of talented, educated Mormon women who grew up assuming motherhood would be the end all be all of their existence. Then they found, once they became mothers, that they had capacity for projects and ideas in addition to and beyond motherhood. And design blogs are an easy outlet for all the creative energy. I’m sure there’s something to this theory too.

Incarcerated Kentucky clerk Kim Davis’s lawyer Mat Staver appeared on Chris Hayes’s MSNBC show yesterday and the the testy exchange between the two put a spotlight on the fact that Davis doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on in her anti-gay crusade.
Staver started the interview with by claiming Davis was “innocent” of any crime, an assertion that Hayes pointed out was patently false. Hayes then asked if Staver would still be defending Davis if she refused to issue marriage licenses to interracial couples on religious grounds. Staver punted on the question and after a bit of back and forth (and talking over one another) Hayes asked Staver point blank:
Mr. Staver there are allies of yours who have been talking to reporters saying that they think you are taking Kim Davis for a ride and basically raising money off her plight. How are you doing on fundraising this week?

It was bad enough that Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy ended their 40-year marriage earlier this month, but now a source has told People magazine that Kermit has been all booed up with a colleague named Denise.
Yes, word is that Kermit has been trotting Denise around town like nobody’s business. And get this: Kermit and his ex-wife, Miss Piggy, are still working together on a talk show, and Kermit had the audacity to bring Denise to the set. Yes, he reportedly brought his new-new around his former wife less than a month after their separation. No bueno.
Y’all know how black Twitter can be all up in people’s business and hilariously messy. History Repeats Itself With Backlash Against Black Empowerment

What has made the 21st century so interesting is that, perhaps for the first time in American history, the right people are being studied. Examining “race in America,” now in vogue, used to be called grappling with “The Negro Problem.” Black leadership and luminaries were ignored when they repeatedly said during the last century’s white supremacist flare-ups: it’s white Americans that are beyond due for the collective, public microscope.
We need to ask and answer the following questions: What makes white people the way they are? Why do they respond to every black freedom call with physical and psychic violence, smear tactics and diversionary moves, even when they now know that when black people push, all people ride?
The answers to these questions have filled shelves of books—on American racism, on African-American history, on the nature of “whiteness” itself. The only way to give cogent answers here is to examine the present and the past simultaneously. “All history is current events,” John Henrik Clarke, the Pan-African historian liked to say.
Donald Trump actively courts white nationalists without even bothering to use the coded language of a 1980 Ronald Reagan (Welfare queens), and witnessing Black Lives Matter get labeled a hate group by Fox News, all line up with the historical current of white nationalism.
It always appears when blacks gain ground against white supremacy as America’s economic and social structures drastically change. Here’s the pattern: white socio-economic anxiety translates into oppression based on race, blacks respond against the oppression, white supremacy produces a backlash to the response, and the blacklash produces more black struggle.

A video of a Providence, R.I., white officer stopping a 23-year-old black man for, driving with an air freshener dangling from his car windshield has gone viral.
Dana Harris Jr. uploaded a cellphone video on YouTube after he was stopped in Mount Hope, R.I., by Providence Officer Brian Murphy on Aug. 24, according to Raw Story.
The shaky cellphone video shows a police car with flashing lights pull up behind Harris as he records the scene.
Here is the exchange in part, according to video:
“What’s the problem, big dude?” Harris says, turning the camera back on himself.
“You seen me come out of my driveway,” Harris states. “What did I do wrong?”
“License and registration, sir,” Murphy asks.
“I have a cousin who’s a Providence police officer for 23 years,” Harris says. “What’s the problem? … I’m tired of this. I’m not a gangster. I’m not a thug.”
“Insurance?” the officer asks.
After reviewing the paperwork, the officer returns it, and nods at the windshield, saying, “You can’t have this obstructing your view.”
“Come on, are you serious?”
“Yeah, I’m serious, you can’t have that there.”
“Air fresheners?” Harris asks incredulously. “That’s the reason you pulled me over?”
“Yep,” the officer says, but doesn’t give Harris a ticket.

Ohio Parents Publicize Daughter’s Heroin Overdose to Spark Dialogue
Allison Shuemake’s parents hope the conversation about her death will spare another parent their pain.

When 18-year-old Allison Shuemake died in late August, her parents, Dorothy and Fred, could have kept the cause a secret. But according to Cleveland.com the Middletown Ohio couple chose the rare step of publicizing her heroin overdose in hopes of shining some light on the drug plague that is claiming so many lives in their area. They said they were neither ‘ashamed or guilty’ in stating the drug death in the first sentence of her obituary.
Fred Shuemake, a retired Middletown police detective, says he believes his daughter was ‘dabbling’ in heroin. According to the website, Allison had previously been in rehab for alcohol and marijuana use. She had recently taken on two jobs and moved in with her boyfriend, 31 year old Luther Combs. She and Combs were both found dead on August 26th with needles nearby.
After noting the cause of death, Allison’s obit described her as “a funny, smart, gregarious, tenacious and strong-willed teenager with gusto. Her favorite color was “sparkle” which matched her personality.”

Pope Francis takes in two migrant families at Vatican, calls on churches all over the world to follow suit
VATICAN CITY — The Vatican will shelter two families of migrants who are “fleeing death” from war or hunger, Pope Francis announced Sunday as he called on Catholic parishes, convents and monasteries across Europe to do the same.
Francis cited Mother Teresa, the European-born nun who cared for the poorest in India, in making his appeal in remarks to pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter’s Square.
“Faced with the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees who are fleeing death by war and by hunger, and who are on a path toward a hope for life, the Gospel calls us to be neighbours to the smallest and most abandoned, to give them concrete hope,” Frances said.
It’s not enough to say “Have courage, hang in there,” he added.
“May every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe host a family, starting with my diocese of Rome,” Francis said. He also asked bishops throughout Europe to have their dioceses take up his call to “express the Gospel in concrete terms and take in a family of refugees.”…

Poison Pills Aplenty in Cardin Bill
Despite his protestations to the contrary, the bill that Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) plans to introduce to “strengthen” the Joint Comprehensive Program of Action (JCPOA) agreement between the P5+1 and Iran appears filled with “poison pills” designed to scuttle the accord.
The “Iran Policy Oversight Act of 2015,” which Cardin insisted Friday “would be consistent with the administration’s interpretation of the agreement,” appears to challenge in major ways Obama’s intent. It will almost certainly draw strong objections from the White House as well as its P5+1 partners and Iran.
LobeLog obtained the 35-page “discussion draft” of the document and excerpts and/or summarizes it at some considerable length below, so that the reader can assess both its content and intent.
According to Arms Control Association (ACA) president Daryl Kimball, who has seen the draft but did not provide it to LobeLog,:
The bill seeks to reinterpret the requirements of the JCPOA and some of its sequencing and is being offered by somebody who just announced he is opposed to the deal. So this legislation must be interpreted as an attempt to undermine or block the implementation of the JCPOA, and other members of Congress need to recognize that.
And those who might still believe that this is not an attempt to undermine [the JCPOA’s] implementation must recognize that when it hits the floor, it could well become a Christmas tree for amendments by anti-deal members that are more clearly designed to kill the JCPOA.
As it is, the draft bill and its language fairly bristle with hostility and threat toward Iran that the Iranian leadership—including its disproportionately hard-line parliament that will shortly begin its own debate on the JCPOA—will no doubt interpret as provocative and evidence of bad faith on the part of the U.S. Congress at the very least

Yes, Southern, my husband had some at a friend’s house and gave me the suggestion. I quarter the cabbage and before enclosing it in foil drizzle olive oil, and a nice pat of butter, salt and pepper and put on grill for 30 to 40 minutes or till tender. I was very pleasantly surprised. So tender and flavorful!

Trump Is Right on Economics

So Jeb Bush is finally going after Donald Trump. Over the past couple of weeks the man who was supposed to be the front-runner has made a series of attacks on the man who is. Strange to say, however, Mr. Bush hasn’t focused on what’s truly vicious and absurd — viciously absurd? — about Mr. Trump’s platform, his implicit racism and his insistence that he would somehow round up 11 million undocumented immigrants and remove them from our soil.
Instead, Mr. Bush has chosen to attack Mr. Trump as a false conservative, a proposition that is supposedly demonstrated by his deviations from current Republican economic orthodoxy: his willingness to raise taxes on the rich, his positive words about universal health care. And that tells you a lot about the dire state of the G.O.P. For the issues the Bush campaign is using to attack its unexpected nemesis are precisely the issues on which Mr. Trump happens to be right, and the Republican establishment has been proved utterly wrong.
To see what I mean, consider what was at stake in the last presidential election, and how things turned out after Mitt Romney lost.
During the campaign, Mr. Romney accused President Obama of favoring redistribution of income from the rich to the poor, and the truth is that Mr. Obama’s re-election did mean a significant move in that direction. Taxes on the top 1 percent went up substantially in 2013, both because some of the Bush tax cuts were allowed to expire and because new taxes associated with Obamacare kicked in. And Obamacare itself, which provides a lot of aid to lower-income families, went into full effect at the beginning of 2014.
Conservatives were very clear about what would happen as a result. Raising taxes on “job creators,” they insisted, would destroy incentives. And they were absolutely certain that the Affordable Care Act would be a “job killer.”
So what actually happened? As of last month, the U.S. unemployment rate, which was 7.8 percent when Mr. Obama took office, had fallen to 5.1 percent. Labor Day is almost here. Which means the summer is officially over. Which sucks. Because it felt like we had three weeks of summer this year. Like, you remember how it took Meek Mill an entire month to write and release a wack diss track for Drake? That’s how long summer felt. The span of a Meek Mill studio session.
Fortunately, Labor Day allows us to end on a high note with the end-of-summer Labor Day weekend cookouts. But, before the weekend hits, there are some things that need to be addressed. Some things your bitch ass better not do at a Labor Day cookout. Which are different than Memorial Day and 4th of July cookouts, because everyone knows that the summer ends when the cookout ends, so people are already a tad bit on edge. Tread lightly.
1. Make a to-go-plate before anyone else even ate
Ok, fine. Your bitch-ass drove all the way to the cookout but has to leave after like 15 minutes to go watch The Strain. Cool. Be a weirdo. But, guess who aint leaving with a to-go plate? That’s right. You motherfucker.
2. Make like a thousand to-go plates for people who didn’t show up
If you’re making these obnoxious-ass to-go plates for a homeless shelter or your invalid and/or elderly relatives, fine. Aunt Gracie likes beef ribs and baked beans too. But if people are able to walk and shit and just aint decide to show up, you can take pictures of the food and Snapchat them shits because that’s all they’re going to see.
3. Hover around the food
The meat will be done when the meat is done. Go play spades or mingle or throw lotion-filled water balloons at your ashy-ass kids or something and get the hell away from the grill.
