    This would seem to me to be a bigger deal than it has been made out to be in a political year in which people seem perfectly willing to believe that Donald Trump is going to knuckle hedge-fund managers in the name of economic justice. Bernie Sanders went down deep into Jeebusland on Monday and gave a speech at Liberty University where he dared the assembled—and their personal Lords and Saviors—to start pushing the gospel plow a little harder.

    “I am far, far from a perfect human being, but I am motivated by a vision which exists in all of the great religions–Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and others–and which is so beautifully and clearly stated in Matthew 7:12. ‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them to do to you, for this sums up the Law and the prophets.’ The Golden Rule. Do to others what you would have them do to you. Not very complicated. Let me be very frank. I understand that issues such as abortion and gay marriage are very important to you and that we disagree on those issues. I get that. But let me respectfully suggest that there are other issues out there that are of enormous consequence to our country and the world and that maybe, just maybe, we don’t disagree on them. And maybe, just maybe, we can work together in trying to resolve them…there is no justice when the top one-tenth of 1 percent own almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent. There is no justice when all over this country people are working longer hours for lower wages, while 58 percent of all new income goes to the top 1 percent. There is no justice when, in recent years, we have seen a proliferation of millionaires and billionaires while, at the same time, the United States has the highest rate of childhood poverty in the industrialized world. Twenty percent of all children—and 40 percent of African-American children—now live in poverty.”

    Matt Damon Interrupts Successful Black Woman Filmmaker to Explain Diversity to Her

    “You’re looking at this group right here and who you’re picking and the story that you’re doing,” she says calmly. Luckily, Matt Damon is there to swoop in with this Smart White Man cape and interrupts Brown in order to explain diversity to her and this room full of white people. He argues that actually, the less diverse directing teams brought up the same issue about the prostitute character that Effie is raising.

    Effie counters by saying that his summation is “not necessarily true,” and Matt Damon interrupts her again, this time by laying out what exactly diversity is.

    “When we’re talking about diversity you do it in the casting of the film not in the casting of the show.”

    Meaning that they don’t have to hire any diverse filmmakers on Project Greenlight as long as they throw a few women and black people onscreen.

    Review: ‘Negroland,’ by Margo Jefferson, on Growing Up Black and Privileged
    SEPT. 10, 2015

    Margo Jefferson’s memoir, “Negroland,” possesses a refrain, a series of sentences that are repeated, as if out of a Duke Ellington composition, so the author can hang onto them and so can we.

    “I think it’s too easy to recount your unhappy memories when you write about yourself,” Ms. Jefferson comments. “You bask in your own innocence. You revere your grief. You arrange your angers at their most becoming angles.”

    This refrain, which appears three times in “Negroland,” performs several duties. It suggests the author’s unease with the lurid state of the American memoir.

    It reminds you that you’re reading a critic — Ms. Jefferson won a Pulitzer Prize in 1995 for her book reviews in The New York Times — who didn’t pander to her audience and won’t begin to do so now. (Her tenure at the paper was mostly before mine, by the way, and I have not met her.)

    Finally, it speaks to what is perhaps this powerful and complicated memoir’s central subject: the lessons of Ms. Jefferson’s childhood in a upper-middle-class black family in Chicago. Her father was the head of pediatrics at Provident, America’s oldest black hospital. Her mother was a social worker turned socialite.

    The author was taught that “you don’t tell your secrets to strangers — certainly not secrets that expose error, weakness, failure.” In her family, and in black families like hers, the strictly observed motto was “Achievement. Invulnerability. Comportment.”

    Conservative group to unveil ‘major’ ad campaign after courting donors to take down Trump

    The Club for Growth, a conservative group that has routinely criticized Donald Trump, plans to unveil a “major television ad campaign in an early presidential primary state” on Tuesday on the heels of asking top Republican donors to give the organization money to fund a multimillion-dollar campaign against the Republican front-runner.

    A public relations representative for the anti-tax group sent out a news release Monday morning announcing its super PAC arm, Club for Growth Action, would debut the ad on Tuesday morning at the National Press Club in Washington. Asked what the ad is about, Club for Growth spokesman Doug Sachtleben declined to comment.

    But as The Washington Post reported earlier this month, the group, which has feuded with Trump throughout the summer, began asking top Republican donors in recent weeks to give them money to fund an attack ad campaign against Trump. But some GOP financiers were skeptical of the plan, fearing it would only fuel Trump’s outsider appeal if a D.C.-based group financed a major effort to criticize him.

    “What we’ve said to our members is that ‘Trump is a liability to the future of the nation,’ and we’ve asked them for support for Club for Growth Action to get that message out,” Club for Growth President David McIntosh said in a statement to The Washington Post earlier this month.

    Pope warns religious orders: Take in refugees, or pay property taxes

    ROME — On the eve of a trip to the United States, Pope Francis has called himself a “son of immigrants” and confirmed the point by issuing a blunt warning to any religious orders in Europe that spurn his recent call to open their doors to refugees because they want to make money off their properties instead.

    Go ahead, the pope said, but be ready to pay taxes just like everybody else.

    “Some religious orders say ‘No, now that the convent is empty we are going to make a hotel and we can have guests, and support ourselves that way, or make money,’” the pontiff said.

    “Well, if that is what you want to do, then pay taxes! A religious school is tax-exempt because it is religious, but if it is functioning as a hotel, then it should pay taxes just like its neighbor. Otherwise it is not fair business.”

    Relatives paying their first visit to the site of the killing of an unarmed black man by police in North Carolina were greeted by a sign attacking civil rights activists as racists and ordering them to “leave our neighborhood alone”, according to family representatives.

    Jonathan Ferrell’s mother and brother travelled on Monday to Bradfield Farms, in the eastern suburbs of Charlotte, to lay a wreath on the spot where the 24-year-old former Florida A&M University football player was fatally shot by a police officer two years ago.

    According to a family spokesman, before the Ferrells arrived at the site of the shooting a wooden placard was placed nearby. It displayed a message in white paint that said: “We reject your racist attitude … leave our neighborhood alone!”

    The sign was addressed “to the racist groups” Black Lives Matter and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which was restyled as the “National Association of Always Complaining People”.

    A small vigil with the Ferrells had been scheduled by local activists for Monday evening.

    The Ferrell family’s spokesman, Ryan Julison, said: “It’s incredibly disappointing that the message this neighbourhood would choose to send to this grieving family is something so negative.”

    The location of the sign, at the entrance to the Bradfield Farms Swim and Racquet Club, was verified by the Guardian.

    Elberton church bans woman, 103

    ELBERTON, Ga. — Members of Union Grove Baptist Church in Elberton recently revoked the membership of a 103-year-old woman from its flock saying she cannot attend the church “for any reason what so ever.”

    Genora Hamm Biggs, 103, who received a letter regarding her expulsion, said, “I joined the church when I was 11 years old.”

    “I was unhappy and shocked,” said Genora Hamm Biggs, who received a letter regarding her expulsion. “I joined the church when I was 11 years old.”

    Despite the Aug. 2 admonition from the Rev. Tim Mattox of Athens, Deacon Glen Jackson of Elberton, and nine others who signed the letter, she returned to church the next Sunday. Someone in the church called the Elberton police. But the responding officer took no action calling it a civil matter.

    Set in a bomb-damaged London hotel during the aftermath of World War II, “Close to the Enemy” is a thriller that follows British intelligence officer Captain Callum Ferguson, whose last task for the Army is to ensure that a captured German scientist, Dieter, hands over secret cutting-edge military technology crucial to national security. Callum employs unorthodox methods in his attempt to convince Dieter to work for the British, developing a friendship with him, which is soon threatened as the German’s involvement in the Nazi war machine may be more than it initially seems.

    Callum encounters a number of other characters whose stories all intertwine.     It’s been about six months since Oregon flipped the traditional model for voter registration on its head. Though the trend in recent years has shown some Republican state policymakers making registration more difficult in many states, Gov. Kate Brown (D) and the Democratic-led legislature made Oregon the nation’s first state with an opt-out, rather than an opt-in, model.

    For years, the burden has been on the individual – if you’re eligible to vote, it’s up to you to take the affirmative steps needed to register. Oregon, however, embraced automatic voter registration, though anyone who wants to withdraw from the system voluntarily is free to do so.

    The L.A. Times reported over the weekend that a neighboring state is moving forward with the same model.
    California lawmakers on Friday approved a bill that would automatically register to vote any eligible Californian who gets a driver’s license or state identification card – unless the person opts out. […]

    Nearly 7 million Californians, mostly young people, are eligible, but not registered, to vote. In an effort to boost the number, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) introduced a bill modeled on a new law in Oregon to get more people to the polls.
    MSNBC’s Zack Roth reported the other day that Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has not yet taken a position on the bill, though proponents are cautiously optimistic.

    Given California’s size and population, this represents a major step forward for the entire idea of automatic voter registration, and there’s ample reason to believe the progress will spread. Roth’s report added:
    Automatic voter registration is fast gaining traction in blue states as a way to expand access to voting, after record low turnout in last fall’s midterms. In March, Oregon became the first state to enact the reform, prompting legislators in 17 states, plus the District of Columbia and both houses of the U.S. Congress, to introduce similar bills. It gained further momentum in June when Hillary Clinton backed the idea in a major campaign speech on voting rights.

    When congressional Republicans saw controversial videos about Planned Parenthood over the summer, the party’s plan came together quite quickly: GOP lawmakers would accuse the health care group of breaking the law and use this as a pretext for a government-shutdown scheme.

    There was just one nagging detail: Planned Parenthood never actually did anything illegal. It didn’t sell fetal tissue for a profit; it didn’t misuse public resources, and it didn’t violate any laws. The Republican plan was based on a foundation of quicksand.

    But The Hill reported over the weekend that GOP House members are now shifting to their back-up plan: they no longer care whether Planned Parenthood did anything wrong.
    Congressional Republicans say they are determined to shut Planned Parenthood down, regardless of whether it broke any laws.

    In more than two months of investigations, members have yet to turn up evidence that Planned Parenthood acted illegally, the same conclusion reached by a half-dozen state investigations. The Department of Justice has so far declined to launch a formal probe.

    Several Republicans acknowledged this week that they may never find proof of wrongdoing at Planned Parenthood – but said it doesn’t matter.
    “The issue is not whether there’s been a crime committed or not,” Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas.) said last week. “This issue is whether or not taxpayers should fund Planned Parenthood.”

    It reminds me of the witch scene in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” The villagers decide they want to burn a suspected witch, and John Cleese offers proof of her evil ways: “She turned me into a newt!” It’s obvious, of course, that he’s not a newt, leading Cleese to say, “I got better.”

    To which the ignorant villagers exclaim, “Burn her anyway!”

    Congressional Republicans decided they want to defund Planned Parenthood as a result of the health group’s crimes. They then realized there’s no evidence that Planned Parenthood committed any crimes.

    To which GOP lawmakers exclaim, “Defund it anyway!”

    Walker slams White House on police killings

    A couple of weeks ago, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker became the latest Republican presidential candidate to somehow tie President Obama to violence against police. The far-right governor published a piece on a conservative blog, suggesting the White House bore some responsibility for Americans “using law enforcement as a scapegoat.”

    It was an ugly, inflammatory accusation, wholly at odds with the facts. But Walker nevertheless doubled down yesterday.
    In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” the Republican presidential candidate said Obama hasn’t offered enough support for police who are “overwhelmingly doing the right thing every day.”

    “He’s praised them, but he’s not speaking out about the fact that this rhetoric out there,” Walker said. “And when you’ve got people say, we have people say ‘pigs in a blanket’ at a rally, ‘fry ‘em up like bacon,’” he said. “That’s the kind of thing you need to speak out about. You need to say that is wrong.”
    Wait, that’s it? That’s the argument? Walker has apparently heard some random people saying obnoxious things about law enforcement at unnamed rallies, and the far-right governor believes such comments have risen to the level of presidential condemnation?

    Look, if you’re going to tie a sitting president of the United States to violence against police officers, at least try to back up your inflammatory rhetoric with something. At this point, it’s hard to imagine even Walker’s allies taking this rhetoric seriously.

    Parents Sue School Over Son’s ‘WiFi Allergy’

    A Massachusetts family is suing their son’s school because, they say, he has a condition called electromagnetic hypersensitivity. The thing making him sick, they claim? The school’s WiFi.

    In the spring of 2013, a young boy at a prestigious Massachusetts grade school began coming home with headaches, itchy skin, and a rash. It was a mild start to a mystery illness that would later bring serious symptoms—prompting his parents to sue the school over what, they believe, is making him ill: WiFi.

    According to the 45-page complaint filed this summer, G’s* symptoms always emerged during school hours, then slowly disappeared once he got home. On weekends and holidays, they were all but non-existent; but as soon as he’d get back in the classroom, they would return. In 2014, they started to get worse. Headaches and itchy skin gave way to nosebleeds, dizziness, heart palpitations, and nausea.

    When his condition stumped doctors, his parents “commenced research” of their own. According to the complaint, The Fay School, where G had been a student since 2009, had installed a stronger wireless Internet service in the spring of 2013—the same time he showed symptoms.     US Attorney General Loretta Lynch has promised the investigation into FIFA corruption has widened and will suck in further “individuals and entities.”

    In a press conference given alongside her Swiss counterpart Michael Lauber in Zurich on Monday lunchtime, Ms Lynch and Mr Lauber provided an update on their separate investigations into corruption in world football, which were the catalyst for the institutional crisis at FIFA earlier this year.

    The events that took place before, during and after the FIFA Congress shook the global game, prompting president Sepp Blatter to announce his imminent departure from his post .

    Baltimore pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant announced Monday he will run for Congress — seeking the seat held by Rep. Elijah Cummings..

    In a statement released early Monday, Bryant said, “After prayer, soul searching and long deliberation, I am officially announcing my candidacy for Congress of the United States representing the 7th Congressional District.”

    Bryant, pastor at Empowerment Temple in Northwest Baltimore, will make a formal announcement at a 10 a.m. event.

    “After the Freddie Gray uprising, the proliferation of police brutality across this nation, the lack of jobs, widespread poverty and hopelessness throughout our urban areas, I decided that leading a successful congregation and building a great church is not enough,” Bryant said in a statement. “I want to contribute to public policy in Washington.”

    Cummings hasn’t set forth a plan for 2016 yet, but he is considering a run for Senate. He’s served in Congress since 1996, representing about half of Baltimore and portions of Howard County. A spokesperson for Cummings did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    Bryant said many in his district have told him they want new leadership.

Biden stood alongside Attorney General Loretta Lynch and announced an $80 million plan to clear the backlog of rape kits in police departments around the country. He appeared with Governor Andrew Cuomo at a rally with some of the city’s most powerful unions to support Cuomo’s push to hike the minimum wage. He made his now-famous appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He took part in an evening roundtable for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.     Continuing his pre-presidential campaign, Vice President Joe Biden will head to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation convention in Washington this weekend, according to sources familiar with the planning.

    Biden’s expected to attend the Phoenix Awards dinner on Saturday night, joining President Barack Obama, who will be headlining the event at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and may participate in other parts of the convention as well.

    If he gets into the 2016 race, Biden will be banking on a strong showing with the African-American community, particularly in South Carolina, where he’d be focusing most of his early state campaign energy. The CBC convention is the biggest gathering of African-American political power of the year.

    The appearance will cap another active week for Biden full of stops primed for maximum political appeal: speeches at a solar energy conference in Anaheim and United States-China climate in Los Angeles on Wednesday, followed by a speech on the economy on Thursday in Detroit and an event on preventing sexual assault on college campuses in Ohio.

    Biden is deciding whether he feels emotionally able to mount a presidential campaign amid the continuing grief over his son Beau Biden’s death in May. He’s set an end of summer deadline, and though he has not yet made a final decision, he has staff continuing to put together the pieces for a campaign.

    Biden’s first public event after his South Carolina vacation last month when he started more actively toying with a late-entry presidential run was attending the funeral of former Ohio Rep. Louis Stokes, a founding member of the CBC, in Cleveland. He spoke with several CBC members while at the funeral.

    It’s not exactly a secret that the Republican Party is struggling to connect with minority communities, most notably Latino voters. GOP candidates up and down the ballot struggled badly with these constituencies in 2012, and recent polling evidence suggests the party is on track to do even worse in 2016.

    With this in mind, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus a good question yesterday.
    TAPPER: Are you at all concerned that any of your candidates are crossing the line when it comes to talking about Latinos, to the point that it might actually cost you the White House?

    PRIEBUS: Well, look, I have said many times, the way you communicate and tone is very important. And, sometimes, it’s not what you say, but it’s how you say it. I think all of our moms have told us that.

    But, look, you know, all these candidates are going to have to account for their own mouths and their own words. And so, if you go back to 2012, you know, it wasn’t anything another [what the] candidate said. Whether it be ‘the 47 percent’ or whether it be, you know, ‘self- deportation’ – it was the nominee’s words that came back into play.
    This has been a common refrain in GOP circles in recent years. Republicans don’t have a substantive problem, the theory goes, they have a rhetorical problem. As the party chairman said yesterday, “It’s not what you say, but it’s how you say it.”
