On Twitter, Bernie Sanders’s supporters are becoming one of his biggest problems
Sanders’s predominately white backers are targeting black activists or journalists who dare question the candidate’s civil rights record.

    By Terrell Jermaine Starr
    September 23 at 9:05 AM

Earlier this month, I announced on Twitter that I planned to report on the disconnect between Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and black voters. Immediately, some of Sanders’s self-described supporters raided my mentions with patronizing tweets.

Over the past few months, Sanders’s predominately white backers have used Twitter to target any black activist or journalist who dares question the candidate’s civil rights record. The battle reveals a long, simmering racial divide in the progressive movement that continues to go unacknowledged. If Sanders wants to win black voters he’ll need to address it.

A series of Gallup polls this summer found that Sanders has a +13 favorability rating among African Americans, compared with Hillary Clinton’s +68 favorability rating. There are many reasons for Sanders’s poor polling with African American voters: his unknown name, the limited diversity of his home state, his shaky response to interactions with Black Lives Matter protesters. But the social media battles have shown that Sanders’s supporters also have become a major hurdle for the candidate in building a positive image with the black electorate.

The online clashes between some of Sanders’s white supporters and black voters came to a head after protesters interrupted the senator’s speech at Netroots Nation in July, demanding he speak candidly about police brutality. His defenders took their anger to the Web, with condescending blog posts and combative tweets that have continued unabated since:

Hillary has an unearned +68 favorability rating with black folks, IMHO. What has she done to earn that? And, what is she going to do about the police killings and beatings of unarmed people, many of whom are black? Hillary of all people does not deserve a get out of jail free card, which is what she is getting.

Right-Wing Threesome Gone Wrong Led to Mysterious Yale Stabbing-Suicide
    89,22024

    Filed to: CRIME9/23/15 10:58am

A mysterious stabbing and suicide that rocked the campus of Yale University last spring took place in the midst of a three-way sex romp gone terribly awry, according to newly released documents from the New Haven Police Department.

The student body was shocked in late May when recent Yale graduate and conservative activist Tyler Carlisle attacked his friend, undergraduate Alexander Michaud, with a knife in his New Haven apartment and promptly leaped to his death out of his 9th floor window. Details on how and why the crime occurred were scant at the time, leaving the event shrouded in mystery.

But a police incident report obtained by Gawker under Connecticut’s Freedom of Information Act shows that the men were not alone at the moment of the grisly crime: They were engaged in a threesome with a female Yale undergraduate, whose attentions on Michaud apparently inspired Carlisle to stab his longtime friend in the neck and then kill himself.

Americans have grown to really, really hate their government
    By Catherine Rampell

Don’t expect many Americans to shed a tear if there’s a shutdown next week. Turns out in recent years Americans have grown to really, really hate their government. Pretty much everything about it.

But especially so when the other party is in the White House.

Gallup has run several missives recently on public views of government, and the results are ugly. Here’s one finding, showing that about half of Americans now think the federal government poses an “immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens.” That’s the highest share since Gallup first asked the question 12 years ago (tied with the share in 2011).

Pretty much everything about it. But especially when the other party holds the White House.

    Good Afternoon TOD

I was in my car this afternoon driving to an appointment and I came across Joy Ann Reid on the radio. Now I was on a station that I don’t normally frequent and I don’t know if she was filling in for someone but her topic was quite interesting. She had on an AA spokeswoman for Bernie Sanders. This woman went on to explain what a Democratic Socialist is and how Bernie is wonderful and blah, blah, blah.

Once she was gone Joy had two other AA panelist on and the question she asked them was if Bernie’s campaign was viable and they each gave plausible answers for and against but then Joy went on to explain to them what she sees on twitter. She explained that she often witnesses “dustups” with Black Twitter, BLM, Obama supporters vs. the Feel the Bern crowd. Joy said that from what she sees these people are not feeling the bern. She asked her guest what she felt Bernie needed to do to get AA support since he is polling so poorly with this group.

The female guest said there are two things. She said he had to engage them directly and in a better way and then she had the money quote. She said he needs to stop bashing and criticizing the President whether directly or indirectly. She gave the example of Bernie speaking ill of the Presidents signature legislation (ObamaCare) with all this talk about Single Payer and how this will not win him any votes in the AA community. She reminded the listeners that the President has been sued numerous times over ACA and twice the Supreme Court has had to rule that it is the law of the land. She said if this system which is not perfect by any means is being fought still to this day then how on earth is Bernie Sanders going to be able to do even more? She said the whole premise of his campaign is essentially a joke considering the makeup of Congress. I was hollering Hallelujah because somebody is finally speaking the reality of the Sanders campaign.

Marco Rubio Rules Out Path to Citizenship During His Presidency
The Florida senator takes a position that could cost him Hispanic voters in a general election.
    Sahil Kapur Sahil Kapur

Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio has effectively ruled out granting lawful permanent residency to undocumented immigrants if he makes it to the White House, even for a second term.

Pressed by conservative host Sean Hannity during a Monday night interview on Fox News, the Florida senator said he’s open to a path to citizenship for people in the U.S. illegally, but only a decade or more after passage of bills to secure the border and modernize the legal immigration system.

“I don’t think it’s a decision you have to make on the front end. The first two things you have to do is stop illegal immigration, then second you have to modernize our legal immigration system, and then third you can have a debate about how to even legalize people to begin with,” Rubio said. “And then ultimately in 10 or 12 years you could have a broader debate about how has this worked out and should we allow some of them to apply for green cards and eventually citizenship

GOP’s black leaders: Trump sets us back
    09/23/15, 11:42 AM EDT

Donald Trump is campaigning Wednesday in a South Carolina where the Republican Party has been turning the page on a divisive racial past: The state boasts the first black Republican elected to Congress from the south in over a century, an Indian-American Republican governor, and a Republican-controlled legislature that voted in July to remove a Confederate flag from the grounds of its State House.

    So much for all that.

As Trump prepares to attend events with Sen. Tim Scott and the state’s African American Chamber of Commerce, national Republican leaders are saying his candidacy is pushing the party backwards on matters of race and inclusiveness.

“Donald Trump in and of himself represents a tremendous setback for anybody who’s trying to expand the party in an inclusive direction,” said Ari Fleischer, a former White House press secretary to George W. Bush and the co-author of a 2013 Republican National Committee report dissecting 2012 Republican losses that recommended making minority outreach a pillar of the party’s future.

Michael Steele, who served as the first black RNC chairman from 2009 to 2011, said Trump could affect the party’s standing with groups beyond those that are the subjects of his controversial comments, including white women. “It’s not just, ‘Oh well he said that about black folks it doesn’t apply to me.’ Other voters see that as being about how you treat people, how you talk about people. Other people see that as an indication of your character.”

Long before he ran for president, Trump was sued for housing discrimination by would-be black tenants and has made a number of controversial statements about blacks, including tweeting in April, “Our great African American President hasn’t exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore.” From the start of his campaign, his sweeping depictions of undocumented Mexican immigrants as criminals have made him a villain to millions of Hispanics.

Clinton: It’s ‘Ludicrous’ to Suggest I’m Behind Birther Claims
by Carrie Dann and Mark Murray

Hillary Clinton is blasting Donald Trump’s “ludicrous” claim that she was the first to question President Barack Obama’s birthplace.

“First of all, it’s totally untrue. And secondly, you know, the president and I have never had any kind of confrontation like that,” she said in an interview on the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

“That is so ludicrous,” she told interviewer Don Lemon, who asked her about Trump’s assertion that Clinton’s 2008 campaign sparked the “birther movement.”

Trump tweeted the claim – which has also been voiced by presidential candidate Ted Cruz — on Tuesday night.

    RIP, Yogi Berra.

Yogi Berra, Master Catcher With a Goofy Wit, Dies at 90

Yogi Berra, one of baseball’s greatest catchers and characters, who as a player was a mainstay of 10 Yankee championship teams and as a manager led both the Yankees and Mets to the World Series — but who may be more widely known as an ungainly but lovable cultural figure, inspiring a cartoon character and issuing a seemingly limitless supply of unwittingly witty epigrams known as Yogi-isms — died Tuesday. He was 90.

His death was reported by the Yankees and by the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center Museum in Little Falls, N.J. Before moving to an assisted living facility in West Caldwell, N.J., in 2012, Berra had lived for many years in nearby Montclair.

In 1949, early in Berra’s Yankee career, his manager assessed him this way in an interview in The Sporting News:

“Mr. Berra,” Casey Stengel said, “is a very strange fellow of very remarkable abilities.”

And so he was, and so he proved to be. Universally known simply as Yogi, probably the second most recognizable nickname in sports — even Yogi wasn’t the Babe — Berra was not exactly an unlikely hero, but he was often portrayed as one: an All-Star for 15 consecutive seasons whose skills were routinely underestimated, a well-built, appealingly open-faced man whose physical appearance was often belittled, and a prolific winner — not to mention a successful leader — whose intellect was a target of humor if not outright derision.
