    New Books Analyze the Photographs of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth

    Two of the most famous 19th-century African-Americans, Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, commissioned formal photographs of themselves as part of their public relations strategies. Books expected out this fall reproduce virtually every known surviving portrait of them and explore their defiance of stereotypes of victimhood.

    Truth, who was illiterate and born into slavery in upstate New York, shrewdly copyrighted her photos and marketed them for about 40 cents each including postage. In “Enduring Truths: Sojourner’s Shadows and Substance” (University of Chicago Press), the art historian Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, analyzes Truth’s sittings for a half-dozen photographers.

    Dr. Grimaldo Grigsby found 28 different images of Truth, dressed in striped and polka-dot dresses and white shawls and caps. (The prints can now bring thousands of dollars each.) Truth usually tried to conceal her mangled right hand, which was probably injured when she was enslaved and sent out to harvest crops. In the photo studios, she sometimes held knitting projects in her lap; white thread trailed across her skirts. She also posed with a framed oval photo of her grandson, James Caldwell, who had served in the Union Army alongside Douglass’s sons and survived a stint as a Confederate prisoner of war in Charleston, S.C.

    Just think, FLOTUS saw the gem in Deesha who would have NEVER been awarded such an opportunity as the one she has planning these events, under any other administration. Not even remotely would she have been allowed to show her incredible talents like she has. I’m so proud of how she slayed this week! I saw multiple journos in awe at the way the Pope was welcomed and the festivities. AWESOME!

    Jeb Bush shaped by troubled Phillips Academy years

    In the fall of 1967, when a 14-year-old Texan named John Ellis Bush arrived on the bucolic campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, great expectations preceded him.

    Jeb, as he was known, should have been an easy fit in that elite and ivied world. His much-accomplished father and his older brother had both gone to Andover; no one was surprised that Jeb had followed suit.

    But this Bush almost ran aground in those first, formative prep school days. He bore little resemblance to his father, a star on many fronts at Andover, and might have been an even worse student than brother George. Classmates said he smoked a notable amount of pot — as many did — and sometimes bullied smaller students.

    Resolutely apolitical despite his lineage, he refused to join the Progressive Andover Republicans club and often declined even to participate in informal bull sessions with classmates. In a tumultuous season in American life, he seemed to his peers strangely detached and indifferent.

    “He was just in a bit of a different world,” said Phil Sylvester, who said he was a Bush roommate. While other students “were constantly arguing about politics and particularly Vietnam, he just wasn’t interested, he didn’t participate, he didn’t care.”

    Meanwhile, his grades were so poor that he was in danger of being expelled, which would have been a huge embarrassment to his father, a member of Congress and of the school’s board of trustees.

    Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) — a co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, which was threatening a coup against House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) — said Friday that now that Boehner has announced his resignation, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is probably “the next guy in the crosshairs.”

    “Mitch McConnell is infinitely worse as a leader than Boehner,” Salmon told reporters Friday. “He surrenders at the sight of battle every time.”

    Kentucky clerk in gay marriage dispute switches to Republican Party

    A county clerk in Kentucky who was briefly jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples said on Friday that she and her family have switched to the Republican Party because the Democrats no longer represented them.

    Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, 50, who has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, said they had changed parties last week. She was a long-time Democrat in eastern Kentucky.

    “My husband and I had talked about it for quite a while and we came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party left us a long time ago, so why were we hanging on?” she told Reuters in an interview at a hotel in Washington, where she has traveled to be feted at a Family Research Council event later on Friday.

    Good morning family…What a day..

    We go to bed completely unaware of what the new day will bring with it…Life is strange indeed..

    As I watched John Boehner breakdown again and again yesterday, I found myself worried for him…No matter how sensitive or big a lush, no man cries that much for no reason…He seemed so full of grief, as if he’d received some really devastating news (health or family); I do believe there’s much more to his sudden resignation that has precious little to do with an obstinate caucus.. Whatever it is, I wish him and his family well for the future…

    Was able to watch the welcoming ceremony for Xi Jinping & Peng Liyuan – What a contrast from the boisterous welcome for Pope Francis, just 2 days ago…This morning was almost joyless –

    And Xi Jinping tried to bluster in his remarks, and President Obama just smiled knowingly, while Mrs Obama played gracious hostess to the hilt – There’s nothing like a super-intelligent, power-couple quietly tag-teaming with an undeniably powerful and towering presence…

    Why on earth was Bloomberg hijacking Mayor de Blasio’s job this morning at the Pope’s visit to the 9-11 memorial..?

    In the 2012 elections, Mitt Romney didn’t just struggle to connect with minority communities, he seemed unable to even understand them. After an unfriendly welcome at an NAACP convention, Romney told a group of donors, “I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this: if they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy – more free stuff.”

    Five months later, after he lost, Romney told donors President Obama won re-election because he bribed minority voters with “big gifts” – such as health care and education.

    It quickly became obvious to Republican officials that Romney’s message, even if they agreed with the substance, was tone-deaf and counter-productive. It was a learning opportunity for the party – GOP candidates would have to be smarter when discussing these issues.

    Jeb Bush did not take these lessons to heart – or if he did, he’s forgotten them.

    The Florida Republican campaigned in South Carolina yesterday, speaking to a mostly white crowd, when a voter asked Bush’s outreach to African-American voters. The Washington Post reported on his response.
    Bush pointed to his record on school choice and said that if Republicans could double their share of the black vote, they would win the swing states of Ohio and Virginia.

    “Our message is one of hope and aspiration,” he said at the East Cooper Republican Women’s Club annual Shrimp Dinner. “It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting – that says you can achieve earned success.”
    I’ll go out on a limb and say this isn’t a winning message.

    Just on the surface, it’s a little jarring to hear Bush – the grandson of a U.S. senator, the son of a president, and the brother of another president – give lectures on “earned success.” Thanks largely to his wealthy and powerful family, Jeb has received opportunities the vast majority of Americans can hardly imagine.

    A Humble Pope, Visiting Manhattan, Will Face Extremes of Wealth and Poverty

    In an outsize city known for its brash self-confidence, tens of thousands of its residents prepared on Friday to celebrate a man who is known for his humility.

    Pope Francis, on his first visit to New York City, will use his position as the leader of a 2,000-year-old institution with 1.2 billion followers to push for global change even as he seeks to present himself as a simple man who is in touch with the crowds that will line the streets to cheer his every move.

    His tour of the city will take him from the ornate halls of the United Nations, where he is expected to urge the world’s leaders to act on behalf of the planet’s poor and neglected, to the streets of East Harlem, where he will offer a more personal pastoral touch.

    From the moment Francis’ plane touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Thursday evening, crowds gathered to cheer and wave or simply take in the spectacle. As the pope made his way along Fifth Avenue, standing in the back of his specially outfitted popemobile, thousands pressed against barricades, cameras and smartphones held high in hopes of capturing the moment.

    “He’s coming!” yelled Jeshani Guevara, 39, dragging her 4-year-old with her 12-year-old close behind as she ran up Fifth Avenue.

    It was a false alarm. The first of many. But their enthusiasm was undimmed.

    Even after darkness fell, thousands still lined the streets as the pope left the cathedral and headed to the Vatican Mission to the United Nations on the Upper East Side, where he is staying.

    Pat Wojcik, 63, who came from Denver, was among those waiting along the barricades outside the residence. “I’ve got to be blessed by this pope,” she said. “That’s what I’m on a mission for.”

    She has a ticket for the procession in Central Park but she came on Thursday evening hoping to beat the crowds. “I was blessed by the Polish pope back in ’93 when he was in Denver for World Youth Day,” Ms. Wojcik said. “Now I hope to feel it again. I haven’t felt it since then.”

    “Look around this room,” a man told Bush, who spoke to a mostly white crowd. “How many black faces do you see? How are you going to include them and get them to vote for you?” asked the man, who was white.
