Elizabeth Warren just gave the speech that Black Lives Matter activists have been waiting for

By Wesley Lowery September 27 at 4:54 PM

In a Sunday speech on racial inequality, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called for broad policing reform — including de-escalation training and body cameras for all police officers — and likened the current Black Lives Matter movement to the civil rights movement that won black Americans the right to vote in the 1960s.

“None of us can ignore what is happening in this country. Not when our black friends, family, neighbors literally fear dying in the streets.” Warren said. “This is the reality all of us must confront, as uncomfortable and ugly as that reality may be. It comes to us to once again affirm that black lives matter, that black citizens matter, that black families matter.”

In the address, a copy of which was provided to The Washington Post prior to her delivery, Warren draws direct parallels between the civil rights movement and the current anti-police-brutality movement, and it sought to link issues on economic inequality with systemic racism. She traces racial economic inequality, citing inequities in the housing system, as well as decrying restrictions to voting rights.

“Economic justice is not — and has never been — sufficient to ensure racial justice. Owning a home won’t stop someone from burning a cross on the front lawn. Admission to a school won’t prevent a beating on the sidewalk outside,” Warren declared. “The tools of oppression were woven together, and the civil rights struggle was fought against that oppression wherever it was found — against violence, against the denial of voting rights and against economic injustice.”

Pennsylvania bride to marry in 120-year-old family heirloom dress previously worn by 10 other brides
    BY NANCY DILLON

In terms of tradition, this wedding dress takes the cake.

Pennsylvania bride Abby Kingston is about to become the eleventh woman in her family to get married in the same gown.

The 120-year-old family heirloom dress dates back to her great-great-grandmother Mary Lowry Warren’s 1895 wedding in Buffalo, N.Y.

It was worn by her own mother Leslie Kingston and nine other brides on her family tree — making its last trip down the aisle in 1991.

When Kingston, 30, first got engaged to Jason Curtis last year, she knew she wanted to continue the custom.

Virginia cop instructs black man to turn his back — then Tasers him for no reason
    27 SEP 2015 AT 09:48 ET

A Virginia police officer is under investigation for Tasering a black man during a stop without provocation, WUSA9 is reporting.

In a video posted to Facebook, that officer can be seen aiming his Taser at the man and instructing him to turn around and place his hands on the police cruiser.

Once the man complies, the officer then Tasers him, causing him to scream and crumple to the ground as the officer stands over him still aiming his weapon and yelling at him to roll over.

An onlooker can be heard yelling at the cop, “What’d you do that for?”

According to the man who shot the video, the cop had no reason to use his weapon.

“A gentleman just happened to be walking down the sidewalk and the cop pulls up in front of him and tells him to turn over. And as soon as he has his back turned toward him, he Tasers him. He didn’t see it coming,” he told Fox 5. “He told him to turn around. He turned around he complied. And boom he popped out his Taser and he shot at him.”

The Fairfax Police Department issued a statement saying, “The facts and circumstances which led to the deployment of a electronic control weapon” are being investigated.

    http://verysmartbrothas.com/the-lightskinned-revolution-is-here-and-it-has-been-televised-its-called-empire/

Thhis shit is real, and Empire’s just televising another aspect of Black life.

My first husband, the girls’ father was a real piece of work. When he brought me to meet her. She was like pouring on the fake kindness. And then she left the room, and I heard her tell her daughter. ‘Indeed Jr. brought that girl here. She’s got pretty hair, but she’s DARK!’

I knew right then and there what this bitch was all about. And then she said when my daughter Nicole was born, ‘She’s as pretty as a PEACH.’ meaning she was lightskinned. SMGDH

I didn’t give any creedance to that shit. If I got a man that loves and respects me, that’s all that matters. To hell with his mama. I thought his daddy was going to follow suit, but he was so kind and loving to me. His accepting and open arms was refreshing, but we were going to be together regardless.

…and further more, he knew what day it was, and chose me. If he hadn’t he’d be the one who suffers the most, because he doesn’t follow his heart and listens to his parents.

We have to live our own lives, noone can live it for us. And trust, at the end of the days, these folks who want to control & dictate our lives, can’t handle their own affairs. It’s twisted

    • rikyrah says:

some of us are lost …so lost…

that kind of self-hate makes me sad.

    • When I was 19 years old I dated this guy named Kyle. He was tall & cute. He liked me a lot. He took me to his parents house and I met them and they seemed ok. The mother didn’t talk much at that time. He took me again and it was around Christmas time because I remember a Silver Christmas tree in the living room. We were sitting in there talking. The mother didn’t come into the living room but peeked in around the corner and said hello to me and then she asked Kyle what was he going to do about Megan? OMG! Right in my face. See, Kyle had broken up with Megan and his mother and her mother were friends and Kyle’ mother wanted them together. Long story short, we dated a few more times and broke up. Eventually Kyle married Megan and they have a daughter. Megan got pregnant and the parents urged him to marry her.

Kyle had given me a diamond bracelet and after the break up I threw it away…way out in the tall grass as I was driving down the highway. My friend Linda told me, honey, don’t ever throw your diamonds away, throw him away and keep the diamonds. But I was just a young girl. I wasn’t thinking of diamonds.

Well, their marriage did not last. Megan cheated on Kyle coming and going. He started drinking heavily. Became a drunk and she divorced him. She left him and never looked back.

About 10 years later my sister and I were at the hospital here visiting my sister’s daughter. My sister’s daughter had just had surgery. She had been in a car wreck. When the daughter came out of surgery and nurses brought her back to the room, my sister stepped outside to smoke, I went to the rest room and then joined my sister. When I walked outside, there was Kyle’s mother talking to my sister. I was dressed in my starched western wear with matching roper boots and shiny belt buckIe. I walked up and spoke, she spoke and kept looking at me and then asked these words….Are you Chica? I answered ‘yes ma’am’ and she came up to me hugged me tight and said ‘My Chica’! I am so glad to see you. I was like what is she talking about? This woman didn’t even like me and didn’t want me being with her son. She wanted him with Megan. Kyle’s dad liked me. He wasn’t like Kyle’s mother at all.

My sisters Gennie and Lacy both said it was her way of saying ‘I am sorry’. Kyle is now a bum, a drunk and no one wants him. Karma!

      • rikyrah says:

        Karma is indeed undefeated.

      • Ametia says:

SG2, that man was a FOOL. He didn’t know what a treasure you were, you were way more VALUABLE than that diamond bracelet he gave you..

But life is like this, we make our choices, have our experiences, accept responsibility, and live with them, until we make another choice.

And yepper, IT’S KARMA. Not good or bad, but what one has put out. It always comes back around.

      • Thank you, Ametia. You’re a jewel.

      • My sister told me a few times after seeing Kyle’s mom that she asked about me. I was like blah blah. Go away. No one cares anymore. He even got my nephew to call me for him after his divorce and I was like…. nigga gone!

      • Ametia says:

        LOL Yes, NIGGA BE GONE!

      • vitaminlover says:

SG, definitely Kyle is/was a loser. I know that it hurt but God protected you from a probably awful fate. That was his loss.

      • Ametia says:

        vitaminlover for the W.I.N.!

      • Thank you, Vitamin. How can a grown woman do that to a young girl? His mother didn’t know me, my family or my family background at the time. Years later she did but not at that time. I told my mother, Kyle’s mother doesn’t like me, she likes Megan and my mother said don’t worry, she doesn’t know any better and neither does he. Kyle’s family went through a lot of heartache with him and Megan. But that’s what the mom wanted. So there you go.

Kyle’s mom couldn’t even talk to my sister because she was watching me so hard. I had spoken to her and was quiet and laid back…just letting my sister continue their conversation. His mom couldn’t stop herself from watching me, she had to see if it was me standing there. Talk about me being shocked at her reaction. LOL!

As painful and scarring as it must have been for your innocent 19 year old self, you survived SG…You more than survived…and you’ve been so blessed..

Kyle’s downward spiral is sad, and I hope with God’s grace he finds the strength necessary to get back on the right track..

        • It really is sad, Eliihass. Both his parents are now dead. Kyle is a drunk and all alone. His mother made a terrible mistake of interfering in his life. But the dad was very friendly to me. We were out on a date again and Kyle said he forgot something at the house and went back to get it. I stayed in the car. Kyle’s dad came out and asked me to come inside. I said oh Kyle will be back in a minute. He said I want you to know you’re always welcomed at my house. I said thank you, Mr Ford. But I never went back.

          • eliihass says:

Isn’t it amazing SG, how such a simple act of kindness on Mr. Ford’s part stayed with you, and in some way made some difference..

Do you think Kyle’s far too gone with this addiction scourge…can he get help..? Would it help – or even be useful or healthy for you to reach out as a friend, for what it’s worth…I realize that’s a huge, heavy and tricky burden/move that could as easily go awry…You are the absolute best judge of this situation of course, but God does work miracles, and sometimes unwittingly utilizing us…There’s a reason perhaps, God has placed this on your heart..?

          • Kyle has a brother & brother in law who are ministers. He’s not a mean guy but I don’t want to go anywhere near him. I wouldn’t want him to get any ideas.

          • eliihass says:

I completely understand SG…Dealing with a non-addict under those circumstances, is tricky enough – it gets even trickier with an addict with a not very strong spirit/mind… And you represent so much of what was once right in his life, and that could like I said go awry..

Really hoping he gets the help he desperately needs..

          • Eliihass, it may take me awhile to close that door on a relationship but once it’s CLOSED there is NO opening of it again.

Iranian President Calls GOP Rhetoric ‘Laughable,’ ‘A Form of Entertainment’
    September 27th, 2015

In response to a question about Republican rhetoric on Iran, that nation’s president Hassan Rouhanisaid that he finds it to be “laughable.”

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour asked Rouhani about the current Republican presidential race, specifically with regard to how the candidates are denouncing the Iran nuclear deal.

Rouhani said, “What is spoken of here in the United States of America… [is] quite laughable, it was very strange.” Iranians, he explained, view this “as a form of entertainment.”

One of our two major political parties is hostage to an extreme subgroup that won’t brook compromise, values theatrical protests over actual governing and is adolescent in its ideological vanity.

Every weekday, get thought-provoking commentary from Op-Ed columnists, The Times editorial board and contributing writers from around the world.

Of course Boehner couldn’t last: He’s an adult. And as Donald Trump’s perverse currency and a Republican nominating contest that’s often indistinguishable from a temper tantrum demonstrate, the qualities of maturity, steadiness and prudence aren’t in especially big favor right now with an animated, engaged and frighteningly influential segment of the Republican electorate.

I’m not saying that the Republican Party alone has wing nuts, disrupters, brats. Too often that’s the impression left by journalists ruing the G.O.P.’s unruly ways.

But Democrats over recent years haven’t been bedeviled by internal dissent and rendered dysfunctional to the extent that Republicans have. They’ve kept something of a lid on things and maintained a semblance of order.

Not so with Republicans, who have become the party of brinkmanship, the party of imminent credit defaults, the party of threatened shutdowns, the party that won’t pass a proper transportation bill, the party that is suddenly demonizing the Export-Import Bank, the party of “no,” the party of ire, the party that casts even someone as unquestionably conservative as John Boehner in the role of apostate, simply because he knows the difference between fights that can be won and those that can’t, between standing on principle and shooting yourself in the foot.

“He’s somebody who understands that in government — ingovernance — you don’t get 100 percent of what you want,” President Obama said on Friday at the White House, reflecting on the fresh news that Boehner was leaving. “But you have to work with people who you disagree with, sometimes strongly, in order to do the people’s business.” Obama and Boehner were hardly a study in “Kumbaya” cooperation, but Obama seemed to sense that the song sung by whoever follows Boehner will be sourer and more strident.

    Brace for it.

An Ohio town where races have mixed freely for more than 200 years

Amid the corn and soybean fields of western Ohio lies a progressive crossroads where black and white isn’t black and white, where the concept of race has been turned upside down, where interracial marriages have been the norm for nearly two centuries. The heavy boots of Jim Crow have never walked here.

Founded by James Clemens, a freed slave from Virginia who became a prosperous farmer, Longtown was a community far ahead of its time, a bold experiment in integration.

Now that history is in danger of being lost. Longtime Longtown residents are dying, and whites are moving in and buying property. Many historically black-owned buildings have already been torn down or remodeled.

But Clemens’s great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson is working to save his family’s heritage. Though his eyes are blue and his skin is pale, Connor Keiser, 22, said that his childhood is filled with memories of “cousins of all colors” playing in the pastures at the family farm.

“We were a typical Longtown family. We all looked different, and we were taught that color didn’t matter,” Keiser said. “As long as I have anything to do with it, Longtown won’t die.”

Largely because of Keiser’s efforts, the National Park Service, the National Register of Historic Places and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center have recognized Longtown as a place noteworthy for its early embrace of racial integration and educational opportunities for blacks. But the town’s institutions are in peril.

Longtown’s former school, the Union Literary Institute, founded in 1845, has a largely forgotten history as one of the nation’s first integrated establishments of higher education. Notable alumni include the first black man to serve in the U.S. Senate, Hiram R. Revels of Mississippi. The school, which closed in 1914, fell into disrepair and until recently was used to store farm equipment.

Boehner Gets Himself Out of a Jam
    Smartypants

For the record, let’s simply note that the idea that this Republican Congress would actually pass a budget went out the window a long time ago. What’s on the table right now is a short-term continuing resolution (CR) that would maintain funding at it’s current level. Since coming back from the August recess, the Republican lunatic caucus in the House has demanded that the CR defund Planned Parenthood or they’ll allow the government to shut down on October 1st.

Furthermore, the lunatic caucus has said that if Boehner tries to pass a CR that does not defund Planned Parenthood, they will initiate a procedure to remove him as Speaker. Apparently they had a least the threat of 30 votes that would throw his re-election into question.

On Wednesday, Democratic leaders in the House made it clear that Boehner couldn’t depend on their votes to save his speakership.
“It’s not our responsibility to try to solve their divisions,” Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday…

Pope Francis: ‘God weeps’ for sexual abuse victims

(CNN)Pope Francis said Sunday morning that all those responsible for the sexual abuse of youth by clergy will be held accountable.

“God weeps” for sexual abuse of children, he said, vowing “careful oversight” to ensure that youth are protected.

“The people who had the responsibility to take care of these tender ones violated that trust and caused them great pain,” he said during a meeting with bishops in Philadelphia.

His remarks followed a morning meeting with victims of clergy sexual abuse.

PHILADELPHIA — Pope Francis made his way through jubilant crowds here Saturday, to the symbolic birthplace of the United States, where he challenged the country to renew the promise of its past, and then joined a gala nighttime celebration of the family.

At Independence Hall, where the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were signed, the 78-year-old pontiff reminded Americans, “it was here, that the freedoms which define this country were first proclaimed.”
