What happened with the $100 million that Newark schools got from Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg? Not much
A new book delves into how the project went wrong

by ARIANNA SKIBELL September 8, 2015

For the last 50 years, a combination of poverty and commonplace corruption has plagued Newark’s public school system. In 2010 fewer than 40 percent of students in third through eighth grade were performing at grade level. And most students did not graduate from high school.

That year, when journalist Dale Russakoff learned that Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire Facebook founder, wanted to give $100 million to turn around the failing school system in Newark, she was amazed, “almost electrified,” she said. Hearing then-Mayor Cory Booker, Governor Chris Christie and Zuckerberg talk about it on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” she thought they sounded like they knew exactly what they were doing. She soon learned they did not.
Russakoff spent four and a half years reporting and writing “The Prize: Who’s in Charge of America’s Schools?” which is being published this week. Her book, she says, “tells the story of Zuckerberg’s gift, how it came about and the forces that it unleashed, both intended and unintended.”

    How McConnell outfoxed Ted Cruz

Cruz can’t get the best of the GOP stalwart.
    09/29/15 07:11 PM EDT

Ted Cruz called out Mitch McConnell seven times by name on Monday night. Afterward, the Senate majority leader barely uttered a word about his chief Republican adversary.

Asked about Cruz’s diatribe on the Senate floor, during which the Texas Republican suggested McConnell is a puppet for Democratic leaders and a foe of conservatives, McConnell couldn’t conceal his smile on Tuesday.

“I have tried very hard to stay out of the presidential race, and I think that’s probably a good rule for me,” he said with a chuckle.

McConnell may not like to talk about Cruz, but he and his leadership lieutenants have quietly and methodically worked to isolate the conservative senator and minimize his effect on the critical fall spending debate. The end result, in spite of Cruz’s invective toward Republican leaders, is music to McConnell’s ears: no government shutdown.

“We had to be prepared,” said John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 3 Senate Republican. “He’s running for national office. He’s got a different endgame than we do. There are things we have to do here. We’ve got to fund the government every year.”

Report: Trump prays with religious leaders
    September 29, 2015, 04:06 pm

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump met and prayed with 40 spiritual leaders on Monday, a new report says.
Trump hosted the coalition of religious figures at his Trump Tower office in New York City that afternoon, according to CBN News.

It said on Tuesday that the meeting lasted two and a half hours before ending the group praying for Trump.

Attendees included televangelists Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, Jews for Jesus Rabbi Kirt Schneider and Trinity Broadcasting Network co-founder Jan Crouch, it added.

“He has a very high regard and deep respect for men and women of the cloth,” Pastor Darrell Scott told CBN News on Tuesday following his visit to Trump Tower.

Scott added that Trump especially impressed the African-American religious leaders present during the meeting.

“I think Donald Trump changed the opinions of the African-American pastors that were in the room,” said Scott, who is undecided about his 2016 presidential endorsement.

“They saw a side of him outside of the media depiction, and that they would give strong consideration in regards to supporting his presidency,” he added.

CBN News said on Tuesday that Trump vowed he is expanding his outreach among African-American voters following the huddle.

    Top Indiana Republican resigns abruptly

Rep. Jud McMillin resigns after sex video emerges on phone
    9:24 a.m. EDT September 30, 2015

Rep. Jud McMillin, a rising star in the state’s Republican Party, abruptly resigned Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Star has learned that the surprise resignation came after a sexually explicit video was sent via text message from McMillin’s cell phone. It’s unclear who sent the text or how broadly it was distributed.

The Brookville Republican sent a separate text message apologizing to his contacts for “anything offensive” they may have received after he said he lost control of his cell phone.

McMillin, whose Facebook page says he is married, did not respond to messages from The Star seeking comment. He said in an emailed statement only that he has “decided the time is right for me to pass the torch and spend more time with my family.”

“Now I want to focus all of my attention on making my family’s world a better place,” he said.

Ben Carson says black voters are being manipulated by the media
    Sep 30th 2015 7:55AM

Rising Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson accused the media of manipulating black voters.

During an interview with Carson was speaking with talk show host Mike Gallagher, Carson was asked why many African-American voters disagree with him on the issue of whether or not Muslims should be president of the United States.

“I think American blacks, over the course of this next year, will begin to see that they’ve been manipulated very, very largely,” Carson said in response. “People telling them what they’re supposed to think and what they’re supposed to say.”

GOP field: Tax cuts for all, don’t worry about consequences
    Sep. 30, 2015 3:29 AM EDT74

DENVER (AP) — Republicans came into this presidential campaign with painful memories of how, in the last one, Democrats blasted Mitt Romney’s tax plan as a giveaway to the rich. They’ve heard a new wing of conservative intellectuals urge them to focus on tax cuts to working-class Americans rather than the wealthy.

Yet the release of Donald Trump’s tax plan adds to the number of major GOP presidential candidates who propose to cut all taxes — but especially those for the wealthy — as deeply, or deeper, than Romney proposed. The lesson Republicans seem to have drawn is to simply stop worrying about balancing the budget. The plans would blow open deficits over the next decade that economists estimate ranging from $3.6 trillion to $12 trillion.

    Yet another Obamacare repeal vote?
    09/30/15 09:20 AM
    By Steve Benen
It’s hard to say with confidence exactly how many times congressional Republicans have voted to repeal all or part of the Affordable Care Act. Everyone can agree that it’s happened several dozen times, and we know that in each instance the vote served no practical purpose, but these gambits have happened so often, exact tallies vary.

Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee yesterday put the grand total at 60, which is probably about right, though it’s apparently now time to update the never-ending list. The Associated Press reported yesterday:
House Republicans advanced legislation Tuesday to dismantle President Barack Obama’s health law that could actually reach the president’s desk.

The House GOP has voted more than 50 times to repeal all or parts of the health law. Almost all the bills died in the Senate. But this time, Republicans are using a special process that prevents Senate Democrats from blocking the legislation.
The process is called the “budget reconciliation process” – or just “reconciliation,” for short – that allows budget-related bills to be considered in both chambers while prohibiting Senate filibusters.

In other words, GOP lawmakers have already voted several dozen times to gut the U.S. health care system, but this will likely be the first time they’ll force a presidential veto on the matter.

But if Congress knows President Obama will veto Republican efforts to take Americans health benefits away, why bother? The answer isn’t necessarily obvious.

On the surface, the endeavor is just raw partisanship – GOP lawmakers want to be able to boast to their rabid base that they tried, repeatedly, to repeal “Obamacare.” But just below the surface, congressional Republicans see this as a dry run of sorts. They believe that there’s a real chance that in 2017, Americans will have elected a Republican president and a Republican Congress, at which point GOP officials will need a plan to tear down the health system currently in place.

It makes this year’s gambit a proof-of-concept test. If they can use reconciliation to repeal all or part of the ACA now, they can simply repeat the process two years from now.

Long-time readers may recall that the reconciliation process is only intended for bills that reduce the deficit, which is a problem for Republicans since ACA repeal would do the opposite. But they intend to move forward with the plan anyway.

They Took Brooklyn And They Took R&B, But We Can’t Let White People Take Shea Butter Too

    Brandon Harrison, 9/29/15

If you were too busy watching Empire last week, you may have missed the story of the “Brooklyn Settler.” A bystander recorded a White fella getting into an altercation with another melanin impaired carpetbagger who apparently pushed a baby stroller into his legs.

The Settler offered up some gems that Cortes, Columbus, or the much slept on Vasco De Gama would be proud of including,

“The only reason that White people like you are living here is, I settled this fucking neighborhood for you!”

    and

    “White Privilege! White Fucking Privilege!”

    and

    “You fucking white trash!”

While I am grateful this settler has gifted us a few creative options for Donald Trump’s next hat, we can’t have this sort of conflict among our brave explorers. In 1494, Castile (OG Spain) and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas which divided the globe from the east coast of South America. Spain was granted the right to rape, pillage and subjugate the native people of most of the Americas while Portugal was granted Brazil and Africa.

Fiorina ironically blasts politics as ‘a fact-free zone’
    09/30/15 08:00 AM
    By Steve Benen
Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina spoke at an event yesterday hosted by the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, where she reflected on the difference between the worlds of politics and business. “Politics is a fact-free zone,” she said. “People just say things.”

Even by 2015 standards, the irony was almost overwhelming. The principal criticism of Fiorina is that she has an unfortunate habit of saying things that aren’t true – and then embracing those falsehoods with unnerving vigor when confronted with reality.

Take Fiorina’s Planned Parenthood lie, for example. It started with a bogus claim during a recent debate, which was quickly discredited, but which the GOP candidate falsely claimed was true over and over and over again. When pressed for evidence, Fiorina’s campaign staff tried to bolster the falsehood, but the “proof” wasn’t true, either.

Yesterday, the story got just a little worse.
The video depicting a live fetus allegedly being kept alive to harvest its organs that Carly Fiorina described during the last Republican presidential debate has been published in full online, according to its creator.

Gregg Cunningham, the founder of the group that collected the footage, called the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, told TIME magazine that the full video was released on Tuesday, as a YouTube clip titled “Carly was right.”
The problem, of course, is that the video doesn’t prove that at all. Vox’s Sarah Kliff unpacked the key details:
The graphic video does show a fetus that appears to fall spontaneously out of a woman’s vagina, still moving its limbs after being placed in a metal dish. But there is no evidence that the tape was shot in a Planned Parenthood clinic, nor is there any audio like what Fiorina described. […]

[Anti-abortion activist Gregg Cunningham told Time] that he is certain it is an abortion process, but at least one obstetrician, Jen Gunter, has argued that the video more likely shows a premature delivery…. The video is certainly graphic, and does show extensive footage of a fetus whose limbs move and whose heart appears to beat. But it is still not the scene Fiorina described in the debate, and definitely does not deliver on the title of the YouTube video: “Carly Fiorina Was Right.”
Mother Jones’ Kevin Drum added that, in light of the additional evidence, Fiorina now appears “even wronger.”

    Meet H&M’s First Hijab-Wearing Model

Check out the latest campaign for retail giant H&M and you’ll catch Mariah Idrissi, the chain’s first ever hijab-wearing model. With the fashion industry directing more of a keen eye towards diversity, this is a really exciting development.

The importance of her casting isn’t lost on the 23-year-old London native, who told BuzzFeed Life being included in the campaign “means a lot.”

Even more importantly, Idrissi felt like H&M was incredibly considerate in terms of making her feel comfortable on set.

“(H&M) asked how much in terms of neck I could show, but to be honest, they were very respectful,” she said. “If the cameraman noticed something not quite right, they would call a woman over to fix me. One of the watches was dangling in the wrong way, and rather than just twisting it on my wrist, the cameraman asked a woman to come over. It just showed that little bit of respect.”
