    15-Year-Old Kelvin Doe is an engineering whiz living in Sierra Leone who scours the trash bins for spare parts, which he uses to build batteries, generators and transmitters. Completely self-taught, Kelvin has created his own radio station where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker, DJ Focus.

    Kelvin became the youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT. THNKR had exclusive access to Kelvin and his life-changing journey – experiencing the US for the first time, exploring incredible opportunities, contending with homesickness, and mapping out his future.

      How very kind of Maria Shriver to take time out from years of public silence and behind the scenes bellyaching and badmouthing our FLOTUS, to ‘celebrate’ our FLOTUS’ great great grandmother who was repeatedly raped as a kid by her white slave master.

      In 7 years, this is the only ‘positive’ ‘acknowledgement’ of our marvelous first black FLOTUS – or anything concerning her from these quarters..

      These past several years have been quite an education if one has been really paying attention…

    The South Bronx, one of America’s poorest urban areas, is two subway stops from the wealthiest, Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Change, development, gentrification — the terms are sometimes used interchangeably though not the same thing — are headed its way.

    For three decades, I have watched artists move into marginal neighborhoods as unwitting shock troops for the city’s developers — often while filling galleries with art far removed from the pressing issues of the day. I have also seen a generation of journalists parachute into poor communities to extract tales for consumption elsewhere. I’m not knocking the journalists; some are my heroes, and the best have pulled back the curtain and helped create lasting social change. A few of the artists, too.

    Still, certain voices have been missing.

    When I moved back to the South Bronx and started the Bronx Documentary Center in 2011, we began training and mentoring a small group of local photographers. We called it the Bronx Photo League, after the legendary Photo League of the 1940s, which consisted of factory workers and clerks who loved photography and cared about social justice.

    Our group includes Mexican and West African immigrants. David (Dee) Delgado, who went from a troubled youth to becoming a responsible family man, helps lead the group along with Rhynna Santos, a Latin music manager, and Adi Talwar, an Indian immigrant. All are passionate and perceptive photographers; all share a commitment to accurately document the realities and changes in our own community, some positive, some not. We strive for balance, not sensation.

    What Busa has found is illustrated in the above image: a systematic and very sophisticated effort to make the simple act of going to the polls much, much more difficult for North Carolina’s black voters. From Busa’s presentation:

    North Carolina Republicans have been actively moving the goalposts—they’ve been moving polling places around like a crazed monkey on crack. They have been cutting numbers of polling places in some counties, increasing numbers in other counties. There has been no systematic analysis of the effect of this. All I’ve been able to find in any news outlet is, you know: a little local newspaper, say Winston-Salem’s, will say: “the number of early voting sites is twelve this year…by the way, it was fifteen last year.” That’s it. Nobody has taken an overall view. […]
    The headline outcome from our analysis is that in 2014 white voters—71% of the electorate in North Carolina—had to travel an additional 119,000 miles from their homes to their nearest Early Voting locations…which is approximately equivalent to halfway from the Earth to the Moon.

    I hear you ask, “how did it affect black voters?” Well, black voters—22% of the electorate—had to travel to the moon and halfway home again, 370,000 miles, in 2014, to get to their nearest Early Voting place. […]

    Social equity. Rev. Barber was talking last night about how we should make moral arguments; we shouldn’t be talking about liberals and conservatives, we should be talking about right and wrong. And the right and wrong of it is that the well-to-do, like many of us in this room, have a much higher degree of mobility and a lot more freedom to say “I’m not coming into work…I’ll be a half an hour late, because I’m going to stop off and vote first.” Wage slaves in a low-wage job, which a lot of people of color are stuck in today, don’t have that opportunity, to tell the manager of McDonald’s “I’m going to be a half hour late today because I’m going to vote.” So, I really insist that excessive distance-to-poll is a poll tax. It costs you money to go vote, and the more money it costs, the fewer poor people vote.

        that’s not to say they would make donations and a big to do about charity, but only for tax purposes and for the opportunity to control and manipulate others – Charity has become something of a power/influence wielding concept and practice…It is no longer a pure act of helping the least of us without fanfare, tax breaks etc..

    WHOOPI GOLDBERG ALLEGEDLY GOES OFF ON “THE VIEW” EXECS!

    Whoopi Goldberg allegedly threw shots at her “master”, ABC, the other day during an outburst backstage at The View. A source exclusively spilled the tea to Daily Mail Online.

    “She was out of control. She paraded up and down the halls saying, ‘I’s a work for ABC who is my master. I’s a slave to ABC. It’s 12 Years a Whoopi at ABC.’ ” They’re saying that her decision-making position for Hot Topics was snatched from her by moving the daily meetings from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. which is 30 minutes earlier than Whoopi is contractually obligated to be there. According to the source, Whoopi is not. coming. early. Shade or nah?!
    Tell me why this source was spilling all the tea though, y’all! They also told Daily Mail Online, “Upset at the changes that Candi has implemented in the show, and not liking the way Candi speaks to the talent, Whoopi blew up a few days ago.

    She told Candi: ‘I don’t take orders from your a**. Stay in your lane like you did when you worked on The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ ”
    The real shade is that despite the actress-turned-talk-show-co-host’s alleged temper tantrum, according to her aforementioned contract, Whoopi is STILL paid! In fact, she’s in the last year of her 4-year $5 million annual salary run with The View, according to Daily Mail.

    Plus, the contract has a pay-or-play clause, so ABC is cutting that check whether or not she’s fired for this outburst or anything else for that matter!

        Many of these young uns are so busy trying to please massa for career advancement, they’ll try to throw their elders under the bus and run right over them…

        But Whoopi is a veteran of the industry who knows the game far too well and can sniff out and id every type of player and wannabe – especially the still green behind the ears types who have a long way to go to get their slick game down pat…

        I work with folks like this. ‘The young uns ‘come in and start plowing the fields, before they get the lay of the land, and know the crop. These fools want to build their own damn fields.

        See, I’m a farm girl.

        You don’t plow down the fields, without knowing what the hell’s in it.

        these wet-behind-the-ears, fools come in to the workplace and think they already KNOW EVERYTHING. There is nothing we can teach these folks, of course. If it’s not their idea, it won’t work.

        They don’t want to learn the system, or get to know their peers/coworkers. They are ambitious, hungry for power, and will try and plow down, dismiss, or flat out disrepect, by rendering you INVISIBLE to get it.

        They don’t last long though. They will leave for greener pastures, only to go there and PLOW down them too.

    The Jefferson County, Colorado, school district found that a charter school in the county broke district policy by sending an email to parents with information about the upcoming recall election and the board’s past support for charter schools.

    Three conservative members of the Jefferson County school board face recall elections in November after parents were concerned about the members’ proposals on school choice and efforts to ensure the AP U.S. History course emphasized the “positive aspects of the United States and its heritage.”

    The president of the board at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen, Alan Scheik, sent a letter to parents urging them to vote in the recall election, noting that the “current JeffCo board two years ago favored school choice and charter schools” by raising funding for charter schools,” according to Chalkbeat Colorado.

    Chicago Public Schools downgrades four years of inflated graduation rates

    Chicago Public Schools lowered four years of inflated high school graduation rates to account for a higher-than-advertised dropout rate, another blow to a district beset by financial and professional turmoil.

    The accuracy of the district’s numbers had been called into question as early as January in a report by CPS’ inspector general. But CPS officials did not announce the revised graduation rates until Thursday, months after Mayor Rahm Emanuel won re-election.

    Throughout the campaign, Emanuel repeatedly pointed to the district’s improving graduation rates as proof that his often-controversial stewardship of one of the nation’s largest public school systems was producing tangible results.

    “This wasn’t a one-year fluke, a statistical error,” Emanuel said during an August 2014 breakfast with faith leaders. “This is a journey not to a single destination, though we do have a goal: a hundred percent college-ready, a hundred percent college-bound, no child left behind.”

    CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said Thursday that the district made a “statistical error” and that a “relatively minor modification” was needed to recalculate graduation rates.

    I have wanted to go to the local Oregon papers and see if they’ve started posting pictures of the victims. A part of me doesn’t want to know their stories. I don’t want to feel that heartache of their lost potential. They were ages 18-34, so I believe some must have children that have no mother this morning. They were going to Community College, so I believe they were of a certain socio-economic level….and probably some were the first in their families to try and get higher education. I just can’t face all that loss potential in a state where there literally are NO REQUIREMENTS for you to be able to get a weapon of death.

    Republicans move to revive government bank loathed by conservatives

    The Export-Import Bank has become a flashpoint between GOP leadership and the activist right.

    Supporters of the Export-Import Bank have secured enough Republican support to bring an extension of the agency’s charter to the House floor later this month, according to sources involved in the whipping.

    More than 30 Republicans have signed on to a discharge petition, which would force a vote on reauthorizing the government-backed credit agency. Republicans expect at least a dozen more supporters. The vast majority of Democrats are expected to sign the discharge petition, a rarely invoked procedural maneuver that sidesteps the committee process.

    If the numbers hold, there is nothing the GOP leadership could do to stop a vote on an extension.

    Former Gov. Mike Huckabee, making his second White House bid, has noticed the polls showing amateurs leading the race for the Republican presidential nomination. And in a conversation yesterday with the Washington Examiner, Huckabee doesn’t sound especially pleased with the response the inexperienced candidates are receiving.
    “I mean, I can’t imagine somebody would allow a doctor to do surgery on them who had zero experience and, in fact, had never been to medical school,” Huckabee said. “I can’t imagine that somebody would let them pilot the airplane they’re in if they’ve never been in the cockpit, but have played some video games and that’s their only experience.”

    “If you look at all the ways in which one qualifies for any job in this country, this would be the first time in history that people would say, ‘Yeah, we’re looking to hire you for a job, but the more capable, experienced and competent you are, the less we’re likely to hire you. We want to hire someone who has never ever done this job, who has never done anything like this job, is completely unprepared for what they’re about to take place. We want a true, honest to God amateur stepping into the Oval Office and being the leader of the free world,’” Huckabee continued. “Think about how irrational that is put in that context.”
    Well sure, when you put it that way, it doesn’t sound good.

    Republican voters will have the final say on the matter, but Huckabee’s frustrations are rooted in reality. In fact, his complaints led me to make a chart.

    GOP leader tries to undo damage after Benghazi concession

    On Tuesday night, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) acknowledged a fact that everyone knows, but which Republicans aren’t supposed to admit out loud: the GOP’s taxpayer-financed Benghazi committee is all about the Republicans’ “strategy to fight and win” against Hillary Clinton. It’s not, in other words, about investigating an attack that left four Americans dead.

    As the uproar continued yesterday, McCarthy and GOP leaders spent the day “scrambling to undo the damage.” That included the California Republican sitting down with Fox News’ Bret Baier in the hopes of putting out the fire. McCarthy, the likely next Speaker of the House, stuck to an awkwardly worded script.
    “I did not intend to imply in any way that [the committee’s] work was political. Of course it is not; look at the way they have carried themselves out. […]

    “I do not want to make that harm Benghazi committee in any way because it’s not political.”
    On a substantive level, McCarthy’s explanation was a mess. Just two days after acknowledging reality, the GOP leader now wants to pretend the obvious partisan exercise isn’t “political” at all. As proof, he urges us to “look at the way they have carried themselves out.” That’s clumsy phrasing, but if we do examine how the committee has conducted itself, a picture of a brazenly political tool emerges.
