6 reasons Sleepy Hollow is looking up

After an unexpected smash hit of a first season, Sleepy Hollowstumbled in its second, focusing too much on Katrina (Katia Winter) and Henry (John Noble) while the rest of its diverse ensemble waited in purgatory — sometimes literally. But it’s not too late for TV’s only apocalyptic time travel procedural to find its way out of the woods and back onto the highway — to the tune of “Sympathy for the Devil” — and after Thursday’s solid return, it looks like the show is on the right path. Here’s why the season 3 premiere has us fist-bumping again:
1. Those pilot callbacks
Series star Tom Mison (Ichabod Crane) says that he wouldn’t necessarily call this a reboot to season 1, and it isn’t. Sleepy doesn’t need to start over entirely. But the echoes of the pilot in Thursday’s episode did send a message that the show is getting back to basics — with a few new twists to honor the characters’ growth. The season 3 premiere found Abbie (Nicole Beharie) bailing Crane out of custody again and taking him to a crime scene uninvited. It also found her doubting every word out of his mouth, but not because she still has questions about the whole apocalypse thing. She just thinks they took care of it already. There’s also the small matter of the fact that Abbie’s mentors keep losing their heads — though this boss worked for the Bureau. Moving on up.

Christopher Harper-Mercer, the shooter at an Oregon community college was a Republican of “mixed race” who apparently didn’t like Christians.

What 26-year-old has a MySpace page in 2015?
Apparently Christopher Harper-Mercer had one at the time he decided to go all “white man crazy” and shoot up a classroom, killing nine of his fellow classmates and wounding seventeen others. On his MySpace page, Christopher Harper-Mercer described himself as a conservative and of a “mixed race” – like, whatever that means. His father is white, and his mother is black.
Yeah, somebody at the U.S. Dept. of Conspiracy Theory has some explaining to do.
Investigators believe that Chris Harper Mercer, the gunman in the Oregon college shooting, was a hate-filled individual with anti-government and conspiracy tendencies, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the probe said Friday.

THE 10 BLACKEST MOMENTS OF 2015 (…SO FAR, AT LEAST)

Two thoughts came to mind while watching Trevor Noah interview Kevin Hart during his Daily Show debut Monday night:
1. I feel somewhat unqualified to critique Noah’s performance. Mainly because I never was a huge fan of the Daily Show. I didn’t dislike it at all. It just was never must-see-TV for me. If it’s after 11 and I’m still watching TV, 9o% of the time it’s a basketball game. So it’s difficult for me to compare his performance to Jon Stewart’s — which is what every Noah critique boils down to — become I’m just not familiar enough with Stewart’s to make that assessment. (It’s also an inherently unfair critique, in no small part because it’s comparing a 2015 Stewart to Noah, not a 2000 Stewart.) That said, I thought he did a decent job. I believe he’ll get better. And I also felt while watching it that the interview would have been more interesting if Hart was the host and Noah was the guest.
2. This was Black as fuck. Was it as Black as Viola Davis quoting Harriet Tubman in a room full of anxious White people; an act that forced at least one to sob a half gallon of salty-ass and delicious-ass White Tears? No. But Trevor Noah having Kevin Hart as his first interview was pretty damn Black. Both literally and, considering how Comedy Central has appointed two Black men (Noah and Larry Wilmore) to follow such beloved cultural figures (Stewart and Steven Colbert), contextually.
Anyway, it’s apropos that this would happen in 2015, because this year has been filled with public-ass Black-ass moment after public-ass Black-ass moment. It’s a clown car of Blackness. A Blackness turducken swallowed by a Black-ass sperm whale.
Any other year, this moment with Noah and Hart would easily be one of the five Blackest moments of the year. Nine months into this Black-ass 2015, however, it barely cracks the top 10.

Zimmer accuses Broad charter plan of strategy to ‘bring down’ LAUSD

Steve Zimmer, president of the LA Unified school board, said today that plans by Eli Broad and other philanthropists to expand the number of charter schools in the district represents “a strategy to bring down LAUSD that leaves 250,000 kids vulnerable to damage.”
A draft report of the plan appears show how the organizations involved would be creating the equivalent of a parallel school district, one with a defined goal of serving half the number of students attending LA Unified schools within eight years.
The “Great Public Schools Now Initiative” says the expansion would cost nearly half a billion dollars by 2023, through 260 new charter schools to serve an additional 130,000 students “most in need — low-income students of color.” Currently, about 151,000 students now attend charters in LA Unified, which has more charter schools, 264, than any school district in the country.
The 54-page report, dated “June 2015,” omits the names of authors or sponsoring organizations. But Eli Broad’s name appears at the end of a cover letter accompanying the report that makes a case for charter schools as “the greatest hope for students in L.A.” And alluding to the number of students on waiting lists to get into existing charters, now about 42,000, the need for more charters, he says, is urgent.

MICHAEL WANG, a young Californian, came second in his class of 1,002 students; his ACT score was 36, the maximum possible; he sang at Barack Obama’s inauguration; he got third place in a national piano contest; he was in the top 150 of a national maths competition; he was in several national debating-competition finals. But when it came to his university application he faced a serious disappointment for the first time in his glittering career. He was rejected by six of the seven Ivy League colleges to which he applied.
“I saw people less qualified than me get better offers,” says Mr Wang. “At first I was just angry. Then I decided to turn that anger to productive use.” He wrote to the universities concerned. “I asked: what more could I have done to get into your college? Was it based on race, or what was it based on?” He got vague responses—or none. So he complained to the Department of Education. Nothing came of it. “The department said they needed a smoking gun.
In May this year Mr Wang joined a group of 64 Asian-American organisations that made a joint complaint to the Department of Education against Harvard, alleging racial discrimination. That follows a lawsuit filed last year against Harvard and the University of North Carolina by a group of Asian-American students making similar charges. The department rejected the claim in July, but another two complaints have since been filed by Asian-Americans, one against Harvard and one against nine other universities.

Racial prejudice of the sort that Jews faced may or may not be part of the problem, but affirmative action certainly is. Top universities tend to admit blacks and Hispanics with lower scores because of their history of disadvantage; and once the legacies, the sports stars, the politically well-connected and the rich people likely to donate new buildings (few of whom tend to be Asian) have been allotted their places, the number for people who are just high achievers is limited. Since the Ivies will not stop giving places to the privileged, because their finances depend on the generosity of the rich, the argument homes in on affirmative action.
Several states have banned the use of race as a criterion for admission to their public institutions and there have been several lawsuits against affirmative action. One, brought by Abigail Fisher (who is white) against the University of Texas, has been ricocheting between the Supreme Court and lower courts for seven years; in June the Supreme Court agreed to hear her appeal. In September, 117 Asian-American outfits under the umbrella of the Asian-American Coalition for Education filed a brief to back Ms Fisher. That case’s outcome will bear on the one brought by the group of Asian students against Harvard and the University of North Carolina. Given that several Supreme Court judges, including John Roberts, the chief justice, are unsympathetic to affirmative action, the court seems quite likely to rule against it.

There was plenty in the complex deal to benefit bankers, lawyers, executives and hedge fund managers. Patriot Coal Corp. was bankrupt, but its mines would be auctioned to pay off mounting debts while financial engineering would generate enough cash to cover the cost of the proceedings.
When the plan was filed in U.S. bankruptcy court in Richmond, Virginia, last week, however, one group didn’t come out so well: 208 retired miners, wives, and widows in southern Indiana who have no direct connection to Patriot Coal. Millions of dollars earmarked for their health care as they age would effectively be diverted instead to legal fees and other bills from the bankruptcy.
As coal companies go bankrupt or shut down throughout Appalachia and parts of the Midwest, the immediate falloutincludes lost jobs and devastated communities. But the Indiana case stands out as an example of how financial deals hatched far from coal country can also endanger the future safety net.
At issue is health insurance promised to people who worked for the Squaw Creek Coal Co. in Warrick County, Indiana, near Evansville, who, like other retired union miners, counted on coverage after they turned 55.
“We were assured as miners we would have lifetime health-care benefits—no one ever envisioned that we would have to worry about these other things that were going on,” said Bil Musgrave, 59, one of the retired miners in Indiana. “A lot of them depend entirely on this.”

PULLMAN — Every autumn when folks trek to my neighborhood for the annual house tour to peek inside the brick row houses of railroad mogul George Pullman’s factory town, I know what some of them are probably thinking.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a joint that served up a great cup of coffee, maybe a cranberry scone or doughnut with sprinkles?
I’ve thought the same thing for a decade, and some of my neighbors have waited for a cozy coffee shop even longer.

A former professional basketball player in France for seven-years, Emanuel Washington a 27-year seasoned veteran chef is living his passion—to provide healthy, tasty soul food to his customers, at his own upscale restaurant, Grub Chicago, in the University Village Near West Side community.
Located at 1230 West Taylor, Washington, a native Chicagoan, cooks everything from scratch with does of pure love. “I am passionate about what I do. I put love in the food and you can tell it,” he said as he stood 6’5” in his beautifully decorated restaurant. “Grub Chicago is the only restaurant of its kind in America,” said Washington who opened the restaurant on November 16, 2014.

He said two-weeks ago, there was a four-day Italian festival in the community but the University Village Association allegedly failed to invite him and to add insult to injury they approved placing a 40-foot mobile hot dog trailer in front of his business. It was from New York. “They don’t even pay taxes here,” he said. “I lost $30,000 in business.
“When I called the association and asked them to move it, I was told she had been sued by the Irish last year so she expects to be sued by an African American….” Washington said he reached out to Ald. Jason C. Irvin (28th) for help but he allegedly never returned his phone calls.

What if gun laws were like abortion laws?
What would gun rights look like in America if we treated them like abortion rights? The Supreme Court has ruled that owning guns and getting abortions are both rights granted to Americans, but the laws governing each are remarkably different. Republicans are the primary opponents of gun control laws. They argue that gun ownership is a constitutionally guaranteed right and the government must not restrict that right. Beyond that, things get a little shady. What is the constitutional justification for permitting a free-for-all without restrictions? Nobody’s jumping to the podium to say.
Maybe there’s a practical reason for that hesitation. Maybe it’s because the very same Republicans screaming about unobstructed rights to gun ownership are playing both sides of the fence. They have legislated abortion into near extinction, and continue to do so with reckless abandon.
What if gun rights were regulated like abortion rights? Here’s a list of just some of the hoops you’d have to jump through before you could own a gun:
Only one store in the entire state would sell guns. (See: Mississippi, Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming for states with only one abortion provider.)
You’d have to fill out an enormous personal background check including intrusive personal information that has nothing to do with your ability to own or use a gun. Then you’d have to wait at least 72 hours and come back to the store. (Remember, it’s the only one in the state. You better hope you don’t live on the other side of Wyoming.)
Upon your return, you’d have to sit through intensive mandatory counseling. Your counselor, regardless of his personal beliefs, would have to tell you that gun ownership is actually a bad idea, and that it would negatively effect your mental health to own a gun. (This, despite there being no scientific evidence to support the claim.)
Next, you’d sit through a gruesome movie showing the actual aftermath of domestic gun crimes. You’d see people with half a head. You’d see dead children in their beds. You’d see the bloody aftermath of a school shooting. You’d be shown statistic after statistic warning you that you’d be contributing to this morally degenerate sanctioning of murder.
If you lived in Virginia, you’d have to come back (again) for an invasive and uncomfortable fMRI (which costs around $300 out of your pocket) to ensure your honesty in answering all the background check information and your intentions to use your gun responsibly. (This was as close as I could get to the invasive transvaginal procedure included in the recently passed Virginia bill.)
Oh… and if you were married, your spouse might have to sign off on your gun ownership.

Chris Harper Mercer’s “Mixed Race” Identity and the Umpqua Community College Shooting
It is a new/old day in America. On Thursday, there was another mass shooting. On Friday, today, and tomorrow, and in the week’s thereafter America’s politicians will do nothing to stop the plague of gun violence. This is a choice. It is cowardice. The weakness is caused by the grip exerted on America’s political elites by the ammosexuals and gun money barons in the National Rifle Association.
Chris Harper Mercer killed 9 people at Umpqua Community in Oregon. Much will be written about what his murder spree reveals–none of it really new–about toxic aggrieved masculinity, gun culture, ammosexuals, the online Right-wing sewers that gave him aid and comfort, and other matters.
I would like to call attention to one detail about Mercer’s personhood, a detail that may be overlooked or not discussed by the mainstream news media out of fear of being called “racist”, or alternatively because they lack the conceptual tools (and will not feature experts who possess them) to talk about race and the color line in a nuanced way.
Mercer identifies as “mixed race”: his father is white and his mother is black. In America’s one drop system of racial hierarchy and identification Chris Harper Mercer is considered “black”. During America’s centuries-long slave regime, he could have been auctioned off as human property; Mercer would have been subjected to the rules of Jim and Jane Crow.
