COSMOPOLITAN WAS RIGHT: THE KARDASHIANS ARE THE “FIRST FAMILY” AMERICA DESERves

Why? Well, as I type this, Malia Obama is probably sitting in some advanced-astrophysics or Toni Morrison critical-theory class; debating attending Harvard or Yale or Spelman next year; or just postponing school altogether to become the first 18-year-old Black astronaut. Her little sister, Sasha, is probably skipping school. But not to catch a movie or hang out at Arby’s with Natalie, but to volunteer at a homeless shelter and then to head to the library to continue working on the dystopian and empowering young-adult series she’s been writing in her spare time.

Their mother, Michelle, is probably in the gym training for an intercontinental CrossFit tournament while texting legal advice to Sonia Sotomayor (and looking flawless the entire time). While their dad, Barack, is probably in the White House basement, doing Mikan drills with a group of surprisingly ambidextrous Martians, who fly all the way to Earth once a week to chop it up with the prez.

That the Obama family is America’s official first family will never not be absurd. Not because they’re Black but because they’re so damn perfect. They’re each impossibly smart and tall, and the kids are ridiculously cute and talented and well mannered, and they all appear to adore one another. Oh, and they’re Black. Beautifully and unambiguously Black. So Black that they actually have a “Big Momma” (Michelle’s mother) living with them. And the names of their daughters could very easily also be the names of days in Kwanzaa. It is literally not possible to have a more perfect first family. We will never do better than them.

    …………………………………………..

The Obamas are not the heroes we deserve. Because we do not deserve them. The only thing we deserve is diabetes.

THE BEST ARGUMENT FOR WHY MOREHOUSE AND HBCUS MATTER YOU’LL EVER READ

    Panama Jackson, 10/8/15

One of my good friends from college is a teacher in Chicago. One particular student of hers has begun the college search and in her attempts to convince him to attend Morehouse College, or at least an HBCU, she reached out to myself, and three of my best friends – all of us Morehouse College graduates from the class of 2001 who met in a pre-freshman STEM summer program in June 1997- to see if we could talk to him about our experiences at Morehouse and do a little bit of convincing. The young man wisely took the opportunity to email us and asked about Morehouse and what impact it had on making us the men that we are today. We all responded back to the young man, but my friend Adrian Wilson wrote a mic-drop response that was so impactful I feel it needs to be shared and sent to every prospective Morehouse Man for the rest of days.

Last week, Damon wrote a post about hating Howard Homecoming because of how much Howard grads treat their experience like the best thing that ever happened. Well, Morehouse, Spelman, NC A&T, Hampton, FAMU, etc grads…we’re all like that. Folks often wonder why we HBCU grads love our institutions so much. I think that Adrian’s letter about Morehouse explains just that. It’s printed below without edit, though the name of the student emailing has been removed, because minor.

The most unfit GOP candidate isn’t Trump
By Jennifer Rubin October 9 at 11:30 AM

Donald Trump wants to round up 11 million people in two years for deportation. He approves of Russia’s incursion into Syria. He has a tax plan that adds at least $10 trillion to the debt. And with all that, he is not the most ignorant or unfit GOP presidential contender. That distinction goes to Ben Carson.

    Consider this from yesterday:

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that the Holocaust would have been “greatly diminished” had Jewish people in Europe been armed with guns.

“I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed,” Carson said. “I’m telling you there is a reason these dictatorial people take guns first.”

This follows his jaw-dropping response to the Oregon mass shooting: “I would say, hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me but he can’t get us all!”

The Anti-Defamation League roundly condemned his remarks. (“The small number of personal firearms available to Germany’s Jews in 1938 could in no way have stopped the totalitarian power of the Nazi German state.”)

Carson’s ignorance is not limited to the Nazis, although he continues hisappalling comparisons of trends and people he dislikes to the fascist, genocidal regime.

He does not, it seems, grasp the difference between the debt limit and the budget.

Judge rejects House, Senate redistricting maps, recommends challengers’ plan

    BY MARY ELLEN KLAS
    Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau

Circuit Court Judge Terry Lewis on Friday rejected the Florida Legislature’s third attempt at redrawing its congressional districts and recommended a map proposed by the challengers — including a redrawn configuration of two Miami-Dade County districts — to the Florida Supreme Court for its final review.

Lewis adopted the bulk of the map approved by lawmakers in the northern and central portions of the state but specifically rejected the proposed boundaries for District 26 in Miami-Dade, now held by Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo.

The challengers, a coalition of League of Women Voters and Common Cause of Florida and a group of Democrat-leaning individuals, agreed with the Legislature’s configuration of 20 of the 27 districts proposed in a staff-drawn base map but asked the court to adopt their changes to the remaining districts. Lewis agreed.

“The Legislature has thus not met its burden of justifying the proposed versions of Districts 20 through 27,” he wrote in a 19-page ruling. He said that a map drawn by the challengers “best complies with the directions” set out by the Florida Supreme Court in July and “I therefore recommend its adoption.”

  8. rikyrah says:

    From Junot Diaz’s FB page:

“What does Rupert Murdoch mean by a “real black”? And how many of them does the 84-year-old Australian-born billionaire denizen of Manhattan’s fanciest districts know? The implication is offensive, sure, but it’s also remarkably banal. “Is Obama black enough?” is a question that’s been raised, debated, deplored, gnawed, and then shallowly buried, only to rise again, for as long as he’s been a national political figure. What’s interesting—other than to see how many editors resorted to “black like me” jokes— is how the context for that question has changed over time. In the first phase, the question centered on whether Obama was “black enough” to both win over black voters and win a general election; as often as not, it was raised by black journalists. During the second phase, which lasted from Obama’s election until the end of his first term, Obama’s blackness was largely questioned and interrogated by white observers. (One might see this as a natural consequence of a society built on white supremacy: Having finally proved his blackness, Obama faced predictable pressure from whites.) In the third phase, the pendulum has swung back, as those questioning Obama’s blackness again seem to doubt his ability to connect with a demographic from which they believe he is alienated.”

    • rikyrah says:

      Barack Obama is Black…

the same way Sally Hemmings’ children were Black….
the same way Booker T Washington was Black…
the same way WEB DuBois was Black…
the same way the late head of the NAACP Walter White was Black….

      I will repeat….

Black folk didn’t invent the one-drop rule.

The Black community – in America- has ALWAYS been multi-racial.

Ever since the first time Massa went down to the slavequarters.

The only pure-Black folks in 2015 America are the ones that are VOLUNATRY immigrants from Africa.

      The rest of us?

No six degrees of separation from us and a White ancestor.

All we have to do is look in our families.

Black people came over from West Africa..
yet, the Black community today spans every shade of the Brown rainbow…

from high-yella to blue black and everything in between…

we did not go from West African to the rainbow of shades through osmosis…

there was a whole lotta raping going on.

The indictment of Barbara Byrd-Bennett—Mayor Rahm’s front woman at CPS
Posted By Ben Joravsky on 10.08.15 at 05:15 PM

Appropriately, Mayor Emanuel’s name isn’t mentioned in the 43-page indictment on bribery charges handed down today by the feds against Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who was hired by the mayor to run the Chicago Public Schools.

It’s appropriate because, as near as I can tell, the main reason Emanuel hired Byrd-Bennett was to be the sympathetic public face—thus shielding him for blame—for the cuts, closings, testing policies, and other bad things he was doing to the schools.

Not the least of which was hiring Byrd-Bennett to run them.

I urge every citizen of Chicago to read the indictment. But in case you’re too busy, I’ll give you a few lovely details.

For almost a year before Mayor Emanuel hired her as CEO—I did mention that she was hired by Rahm, right?—Byrd-Bennett was a “paid consultant” for the Supes Academy.

That’s an educational consulting firm in Wilmette run by two guys named Gary Solomon and Thomas Vranas.

The central accusation is that Byrd-Bennett used her influence at CPS to squeeze about $24 million worth of contracts from a broke-ass public school system whose leaders—Mayor Emanuel chief among them—constantly told the public it didn’t have a dime to spare.

So stop asking for more money for things like toilet paper and janitors and books.

And you wonder why so many Chicagoans don’t believe CPS is really broke.

Ex-Im backers force vote to renew bank

    Greg Nash
By Kevin Cirilli – 10/09/15 11:50 AM EDT
A group of House Republicans on Friday gathered the support necessary to force a vote to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, roiling conservatives within their own party during a heated leadership race.

GOP Reps. Stephen Fincher (Tenn.), Chris Collins (N.Y.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) filed a rarely used procedural tactic, known as a discharge petition, early Friday morning that would compel a vote on Fincher’s five-year reauthorization of the bank, whose Congressional charter lapsed June 30.

Within Hours, they collected the 218 votes needed on a discharge petition to bring legislation directly to the House floor and bypass committee.

NY School Employee Reportedly Tells Group of Black Students Sitting Together That They Look Like a ‘Gang in the Hood’

A Catskill, N.Y., mother is outraged after her daughter, a fifth-grader at the Catskill Elementary School, said that a support-staff employee told her and her black friends that they should mix with white students so they don’t look like a gang.
    Oct. 8 2015 2:29 PM

A Catskill, N.Y., mom is furious after her crying fifth-grader detailed how a support-staff employee at Catskill Elementary School told the child and her black friends that they shouldn’t be sitting together because they looked like a black “gang in the hood,” the Catskill Daily Mail reports.

The employee who allegedly made the remarks has not been identified but has since been given duties that remove her from interactions with students while the district investigates the matter, school officials have said.

According to Celeste Jordan, when she picked up her daughter on Monday, the child was upset and would not stop crying. When she first heard about the comments, Jordan said, she thought that another child had made them, but eventually her daughter revealed that they came from an adult.

It all started, according to the little girl, when student monitors of the school safety patrol—who, coincidentally, are majority-black—asked for an area where they could sit together to eat their lunch. After the monitors took a seat at an open table, the woman approached them and reprimanded them for sitting together, saying that they should mix with white students at other tables. She said that when they were seated together, they looked like a black “gang in the hood,” Jordan related to the Daily Mail.
