Simpley Red contines….

Several low-charting singles would follow for the band. Among the comparative flops was a re-recording of the Frantic Elevators’ “Holding Back the Years”, done up in a new soul-ballad style arrangement. Released as Simply Red’s third single in 1985, the track initially placed outside the UK Top 50. However, upon being re-released in 1986, “Holding Back the Years” became a major hit, peaking at #1 in Ireland, #2 in the UK, #3 in the Netherlands, #20 in Italy and later #1 in the United States. The song established Simply Red as a household name.

Simply Red’s second album, 1987’s Men and Women, saw the band adopting bowler hats and colourful suits instead of their earlier ragamuffin look. As well, the introspection and social commentary of their debut album was replaced by a blue-eyed soul sound with funk influences. Veteran Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier co-authored two tracks with Hucknall for the album—these tracks were credited to ‘Hucknall/Dozier/Hucknall’ in the original album credits, in homage to the famous Motown writing team of Holland/Dozier/Holland.

The album’s lead single “The Right Thing” was another international hit, charting in the top 40 throughout Europe and North America. Several follow-up singles also met with modest success in the UK and elsewhere.

Peak years (1989–1995)[edit]
Guitarist Richardson left after the release of Men and Women, and was replaced by Heitor Pereira (billed as Heitor TP).

With their third album A New Flame in 1989, Simply Red adopted a yet more mainstream popular sound aimed for commercial rather than critical success, typified by their cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ pop classic “If You Don’t Know Me by Now”, which became their second U.S. #1 hit, and one of the biggest singles of the year internationally; and their greatest success to that point.

Hucknall was by this time an international superstar, being photographed with models and Hollywood celebrities. This seemed to harm the band’s coherence as a unit, with Hucknall declaring in 1991 that Simply Red was “essentially a solo project”. The rhythm section of Bowers and Joyce left around this time; they were replaced by bassist Shaun Ward (ex-Floy Joy and Everyday People) and drummer Gota Yashiki (often billed as just Gota).

The band’s career peaked in late 1991 with the release of Stars, which became the best-selling album for two years running in Europe and the UK (though notably had far less success in the US than their previous albums). The album spun off five top 40 singles in the UK, and the singles “Something Got Me Started” and “Stars” were also significant chart hits throughout all of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. After the tour, Tim Kellett left to form dance band Olive.

After touring and promoting Stars for two years, Simply Red returned in 1995 with “Fairground”, a dance-influenced track prominently featuring a sample from Zki & Dobri’s Goodmen project. A massive radio hit, “Fairground” went on to become the band’s first and only UK #1. Its parent album Life sold more than a million copies in the UK alone, making it the fourth-biggest seller of the year. By this time, the band was officially Hucknall, McIntyre, Kirkham, Pereira, and new backing vocalist Dee Johnson. Guest musicians (including Sly & Robbie) filled in on drums and bass. For the subsequent live shows, Simply Red were joined by new recruits’ Steve Lewinson on bass, Velroy Bailey on drums, and second backing vocalist Sarah Brown.

Rikyrah posted the link to this Gloria Steinem write-up, below; but I just read it…LOL!!!

Seriously, this unbelievably inane claptrap is what passes as compelling wisdom from the so-called godmother of modern white feminism…?!! Wow, wow, wow! There’s so much to say as we take a peek into the ridiculously shallow, petty, silly mindset of the arrogant, entitled, white feminist…Wow!

“…I noticed that the Hillary Haters often turned out to be the women most like her: white, well educated, and married to or linked with powerful men. They were by no means all such women, but their numbers were still surprising. The more they talked, the more it was clear that their own husbands hadn’t shared power with them.

If Hillary had a husband who regarded her as an equal – who had always said this country got “two presidents for the price of one” – it only dramatised their own lack of power and respect. After one long night and a lot of wine, one woman told me that Hillary’s marriage made her aware of just how unequal hers was.

Haters condemn her for staying with her husband despite his well-publicised affairs. It turned out that many of them had suffered a faithless husband, too, but lacked the ability or the will to leave. They wanted Hillary to punish a powerful man in public on their behalf. I reminded them that presidents from Roosevelt to Kennedy had had affairs, but the haters identified with those first ladies and assumed they couldn’t leave. It was Hillary’s very strength and independence that made them blame her. When I tried describing the public condemnation Hillary would have suffered had she abandoned her duties in the White House for such a personal reason, this changed the minds of some – but not many.

Finally, I resorted to explaining my own reasons for thinking the Clintons just might be, in Shakespeare’s phrase, “the marriage of true minds”. Yet when I brought this up, some Hillary Haters became even angrier. The fact that Bill valued Hillary as an equal partner – and vice versa – seemed to make them more aware that their own marriages were different. It dawned on me that if a sexual connection is the only bond between a husband and wife, an affair can make her feel replaceable – and perhaps cause her to be replaced. This was not only emotionally painful but devastating when it also meant losing social identity and economic security as well. I began to understand that Hillary represented the very public, in-your-face opposite of the precarious and unequal lives that some women were living. In a classic sense, they were trying to kill the messenger….”

“…Older women especially saw Hillary Clinton as their last and best chance to see a woman in the White House….On the other hand, many young, black, single mothers said they supported Obama because their sons needed a positive black male role model…

I was angry about the human talent that was lost just because it was born into a female body, and the mediocrity that was rewarded because it was born into a male one. And I was angry because the media took racism seriously – or pretended to – but with sexism, they rarely bothered even to pretend.

“…Once Obama won, …There were heartbroken older women who now knew they would never live to see a woman in the White House. There were younger ones who had grown up being told they could be anything, then been shocked by Hillary’s treatment and defeat. African American women and men who had supported Hillary also worried that some would punish them for working across racial lines. …As my last campaign effort, I made hundreds of buttons that said: HILLARY SUPPORTS OBAMA SO DO I. Then I got on the plane to Washington, went to join the crowd at her historic and generous concession speech – in which she pledged her wholehearted support to Obama…”

Imagine that…A feminist who mocks and takes digs at other women’s marriages even as she excuses a husband’s adultery and justifies the feminist wife’s decision to stand by her disrespectfully adulterous husband, by framing it in terms of being ‘equals’, being ‘valued’, and showing her ‘strength and independence’ by staying – and only to stave off ‘public condemnation’…

Koch Brothers to Appear on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’

he conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch will sit down for an interview with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski to air next week, bringing their campaign to soften their image to a cable news network known for its more liberal-leaning political slant.

The taped interview, which will air next Tuesday on “Morning Joe” (6-9 a.m.), will take place at the brothers’ childhood home in Wichita, Kan. The conversation will focus on the role of money in politics, the network said in a news release.

The appearance continues an effort by the Koch brothers to alter the public perception of them, advanced by many Democrats, as a secretive force behind many of the Republican Party’s most conservative positions.

Obama Wins on Budget Deal as John Boehner Cleans Out the Barn
    OCT. 27, 2015

WASHINGTON — The budget agreement struck late Monday between the White House and Congress hands President Obama a major victory, vindicating his hard line this year against spending limits that he argued were a drag on the economy and also buying himself freedom for the final 14 months of his term from the fiscal dysfunction that has plagued his presidency.

The deal is the policy equivalent of keeping the lights on — hardly the stuff of a bold fiscal legacy for the president — but it achieves the main objective of his 2016 budget: to break free of the spending shackles he agreed to when he signed the Budget Control Act of 2011.

For this fiscal year alone, the deal would add $50 billion in spending, divided equally between defense and domestic programs, as well as $16 billion for emergency war spending, half for the military, half for the State Department. Together, that represents an increase of $66 billion in the spending limits for 2016, not far off the $70 billion increase Mr. Obama requested in his budget.

From the moment he introduced his budget on Feb. 2, Mr. Obama held firm on his insistence on breaking through the punishing across-the-board cuts known as sequestration in the Budget Control Act to provide equal increases to domestic and military spending. He promised to veto any spending bill that adhered to the statutory spending caps, made good on that threat this month by vetoing a popular defense policy bill, enlisted the support of congressional Democrats with whom his White House had sometimes sparred on budget matters and capitalized on Republican divisions to get his way.

Senate Democrats created an impenetrable wall for Republicans determined to stick to the caps, filibustering the spending bills that reached the Senate floor and threatening to block the ones that did not.

Adele is like Ursula from The Little Mermaid, looking at us poor unforunate souls (so sad, so true) and instead of helping us, she’s writing soundtracks to our ineptitudes and difficulties and making you stare out of the window on the train ride of your life only for you to realize that in actuality it’s only about 3am and three niggas don’ got hauled off into an ambulance, two niggas done started bussin’ and one nigga took his shirt off talkin’ about, “who else wanna fuck with Hollywood Courts?”

Diversity is for white people: The big lie behind a well-intended word

Our country is convulsing over the issues of diversity and race. Police departments from Baltimore to Minneapolis are talking about diversity hiring as the antidote to anti-black police brutality. Last month’s flash point was Hollywood darling Matt Damon whitesplaining diversity, igniting a Twitterstorm of outrage. Earlier this year was the failed Race Together stunt by the CEO of Starbucks, which tried to enlist customers in over-the-counter exchanges about America’s most vexing dilemma.

As an academic, I have spent more than a decade investigating this enigmatic term: What do we mean by “diversity” and what do we accomplish when we make it our goal? Using first-hand ethnographic observation and historical documents, my research has taken me from the U.S. Supreme Court during debates about affirmative action to a gentrifying Chicago neighborhood to the halls of a Fortune 500 global corporation.

Here’s what I’ve learned: diversity is how we talk about race when we can’t talk about race. It has become a stand-in when open discussion of race is too controversial or — let’s be frank — when white people find the topic of race uncomfortable. Diversity seems polite, positive, hopeful. Who is willing to say they don’t value diversity? One national survey found that more than 90 percent of respondents said they valued diversity in their communities and friendships.

The term diversity has become so watered down that it can be anything from code for black people to a profit imperative. Consider the cringe-worthy experience I had sitting in on a corporate diversity training, where initiates learned that diversity could mean our preferences for working at daytime or at night, or our favorite animal. As a Deloitte study showed, many Millennials take it to simply mean one’s unique culture and perspective. (Apparently they are listening to their diversity trainers).

However much it might feel good, though, diversity talk is not enough. At this paradoxical time, when we are at once commemorating fifty years of civil rights gains while questioning racism in policing and prisons, it allows us to sidestep persistent, alarming racial inequalities. Its appeal makes it downright pernicious. It lets white people off the hook from doing something about our own culpability in the problem — like our inclination to live near people like us (i.e. white) or to put in a good word with the boss about our friends (i.e. probably white).

LePage: Public Campaign Financing Is Similar To ‘Giving Your Wife Your Checkbook’

    BySARA JERDE

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) compared public campaign financing Wednesday to handing his checkbook over to his wife to spend money, reported website and podcast mainebeacon.com.

An initiative on the November ballot in Maine would allow candidates who were being far outspent by their opponents to “re-qualify for additional public financing,” according to the report.

GOP-led Science Committee subpoenas climate researchers
    10/27/15 09:25 AM
    By Steve Benen
It’s hard to say exactly when the House Science Committee became a national joke, but I’d argue the laughter began three years ago this month. Then-Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) delivered some jaw-dropping public remarks in which he described pillars of modern science – including evolutionary biology and the big bang – as quite literally “lies straight from the pit of Hell.”

When the political world learned that Republicans had put Broun on the House Science Committee, of all things, the panel started drawing additional scrutiny. It wasn’t long before a portrait emerged of a committee led by right-wing lawmakers with a brazen hostility towards empiricism, evidence, and the scientific canon.

But if this were simply a matter of a congressional panel filled with unqualified GOP members, the House Science Committee could remain a harmless national punch-line. But the Washington Post reported late last week on a development that’s far more alarming.
The head of a congressional committee on science has issued subpoenas to the Obama administration over a recent scientific study refuting claims that global warming had “paused” or slowed over the last decade.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.), chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology and a prominent congressional skeptic on climate change, issued the subpoenas two weeks ago demanding e-mails and records from U.S. scientists who participated in the study, which undercut a popular argument used by critics who reject the scientific consensus that man-made pollution is behind the planet’s recent warming.
The committee’s ranking member, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Tex.), insisted that Smith is “furthering a fishing expedition,” which brings the “legitimacy of this committee” into question.

That’s true, though she’s being charitable with her restraint.

Brown’s endorsement could matter among Ohio primary voters next March as Clinton vies with Bernie Sanders for the party’s nomination. Brown has long embraced the progressive label, taking positions more often affiliated with colleagues such as Sanders, of Vermont, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts than with moderates such as Clinton.

Yet as she campaigns for president, Clinton has called for some of the same safeguards and protections as Brown, particularly with her recent opposition to the pending Trans Pacific Partnership.

She also recently called for getting tougher on financial abuses and excessive risk-taking by banks, supporting regulatory or legislative changes that could affect the nation’s largest depository institutions.

    How a hip-hop mogul’s company made a mess of people’s finances
By Max Ehrenfreund October 26 at 3:43 PM

Russell Simmons was fed up with the fees. The hip-hop personality was concerned that poor Americans without bank accounts were paying too many of them – fees to cash checks, fees to use an ATM, fees for money orders and more.

Simmons said he founded RushCard in 2003 with the goal of reducing the cost of poverty for those who live in it. RushCard was one of the first plastic prepaid cards – a new financial product like a debit card, but without the checkbook.

“For years I heard from mothers, children in tow, waiting in lines for their paychecks, then in more lines to expensively cash those paychecks, then in even more lines to pay their bills,” Simmons would later write. “Truth be told, these Americans couldn’t afford the ‘minimum deposit levels’ required by large banks to avoid monthly account maintenance fees.”

This month, though, some RushCard customers have not been able to access their money for nearly two weeks due to what appears to be a technical malfunction. Paychecks deposited directly onto the cards simply vanished. The economically vulnerable people Simmons had sought to help were suddenly left in a precarious spot.

Obama to Present His Case for Overhauling Sentencing Laws
    By MICHAEL D. SHEAROCT. 27, 2015

WASHINGTON — President Obama will make his case on Tuesday for an overhaul of the nation’s sentencing laws, telling a gathering of top law enforcement officials in Chicago that putting large numbers of nonviolent drug offenders in prison is neither fair nor an effective way of combating crime, White House officials said.

Seizing on a rare issue that has attracted support from conservatives and liberals in Washington, Mr. Obama is hoping to keep the pressure on Congress to produce legislation that would turn back parts of the tough-on-crime approach of the 1980s and ’90s.

“The president is convinced that if we continue to pursue these policy priorities in bipartisan fashion, that we’re much more likely to yield both a positive result, but also, most importantly, a result that can actually be signed into law,” Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, told reporters on Monday.

The president will address the International Association of Chiefs of Police in a city that has struggled in recent months with a sharp rise in murders and other violent crimes. That increase has come as a series of shootings of unarmed black men by officers across the country has contributed to increasing mistrust between African-Americans and the police.

Payne’s worldwide exploits dating back to the 1950s formed the basis of a 2013 documentary about her life of crime.

Surveillance cameras caught her trying to add to her long list of thefts at Phipps Plaza shopping center in the Buckhead neighborhood, according to arresting documents cited by the news station. Officers from the Atlanta Police Department booked her on Friday, and she’s charged with theft by shoplifting, according to Fulton County inmate records.

Payne, the star of “The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne,” drew notoriety for lifting a 10 and ½-carat diamond in Monte Carlo years ago.

Exxon was aware of climate change, as early as 1977, 11 years before it became a public issue, according to a recent investigation from InsideClimate News. This knowledge did not prevent the company (now ExxonMobil and the world’s largest oil and gas company) from spending decades refusing to publicly acknowledge climate change and even promoting climate misinformation—an approach many have likened to the lies spread by the tobacco industry regarding the health risks of smoking. Both industries were conscious that their products wouldn’t stay profitable once the world understood the risks, so much so that they used the same consultants to develop strategies on how to communicate with the public.

Experts, however, aren’t terribly surprised. “It’s never been remotely plausible that they did not understand the science,” says Naomi Oreskes, a history of science professor at Harvard University. But as it turns out, Exxon didn’t just understand the science, the company actively engaged with it. In the 1970s and 1980s it employed top scientists to look into the issue and launched its own ambitious research program that empirically sampled carbon dioxide and built rigorous climate models. Exxon even spent more than $1 million on a tanker project that would tackle how much CO2 is absorbed by the oceans. It was one of the biggest scientific questions of the time, meaning that Exxon was truly conducting unprecedented research.

Black women don’t count or matter. For the Gloria Steinem’s of the world, black women exist to serve a specific purpose of playing roles white feminists like her assign them – and only to help along *their* specific agenda…

And black women like Mrs Obama who refuse to play along or to be manipulated or exploited for the white feminist agenda, is scorned and dismissed and disrespected.

They are them pathetic women who come to White House events and think they can really ‘show’ Mrs Obama by ‘snubbing’ her in her own home – even as they flirt up a storm with the President right in front of her…

Because you know, no matter how wrinkled up and flat-assed – once they’re white, that’s all that pretty much counts – they in their minds automatically trump the President’s own gorgeous black wife…and represent a huge white ‘threat’ to her..

Poll Watch: Ben Carson Edges Ahead Nationally in Times/CBS News Poll

Ben Carson has taken a narrow lead nationally in the Republican presidential campaign, dislodging Donald J. Trump from the top spot for the first time in months, according to a New York Times/CBS News survey released on Tuesday.

Mr. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, is the choice of 26 percent of Republican primary voters, the poll found, while Mr. Trump now wins support from 22 percent, although the difference lies within the margin of sampling error.

The survey is the first time that Mr. Trump has not led all candidates since The Times and CBS News began measuring presidential preferences at the end of July.
