    Zero-tolerance policies are destroying the lives of black children

    President Obama wants to limit the number of students expelled every year from high schools. He believes the rates of suspensions and expulsions are racially biased, arbitrary and ineffective. “Although African-American students represent 15 percent of students in the CRDC, they make up 35 percent of students suspended once, 44 percent of those suspended more than once, and 36 percent of students expelled,” writes the Education Department. “Further, over 50 percent of students who were involved in school-related arrests or referred to law enforcement are Hispanic or African-American.” So the administration sent to educational leaders a Dear Colleague guidance letter on civil rights and discipline. To close the racial gap, he said, go easy with the zero-tolerance policies. Predictably, the ed-reform types, rending their garments and gnashing their teeth, see this is as a disastrous stripping of school autonomy.

    The guidance “would certainly compromise the operation of schools,” according to Richard Epstein, professor of law at New York University. Some critics argue that schools need to sweat the small things — uniform violations, smoking, tardiness and singing — if they want to create a positive school culture in which students and teachers are focused on learning. For the sake of those who are focused on learning, those who aren’t ready must be forced to leave. Epstein adds that schools with zero-tolerance policies offer “no taint of any purported civil-rights violation.” And he’s right when he says, “Disproportionate rates should not be regarded as unjustified merely because they reflect higher rates of improper behavior by minority students than by white students.” Expulsions are easily justified and aren’t inherently racist. More importantly, they can be a very effective way to increase learning outcomes.

    In fact, the complainers are right: Obama’s plan has a major flaw. But curbing the option to expel students is not it. The trouble is his rationale. The real reason to stop expulsions is that, in the noble cause of closing the black-white achievement gap, schools are insidiously giving up on black children by expelling those who are considered not ready to learn. While zero-tolerance expulsions myopically help the school and the majority of students in it, they destroy the student — and, ultimately, the community, too.

The houselights rise on Aaron Burr, the third vice president of the United States and, infamously, the killer of Hamilton in a duel in 1804. Burr steps to center stage and reels off several lines of verse:

    The question is a good one. How exactly did Hamilton rise from the deprivations of his childhood in the island backwater of St. Croix to become a storied founding father: an aide-de-camp of Gen. George Washington, the prime mover in the creation of the United States financial system, the first secretary of the Treasury, the author of nearly half of the Federalist Papers, the subject of America’s first political sex scandal, the bane and bugbear of everyone from Burr to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison? But it is the manner in which ‘‘Hamilton’’ poses this question — in the emphatic cadences of rap, with witty rhymes pouring out over a tolling beat — that has been electrifying audiences since January, when the show debuted off Broadway at New York’s Public Theater.

    ‘‘Hamilton’’ arrives on Broadway this month, riding a wave of adulation not seen in American theater in decades. It is a rare thing: not just a theatrical landmark, but a show that jolts our thinking about popular culture and casts new light on some of the most storied events in American history. It is an odd creation: a rigorously factual period drama about the political intrigues of the early Republic, starring a cast of mostly black and Latino actors, with a score steeped in hip-hop. It is also a coronation, confirming the 35-year-old Miranda, the acclaimed composer and star of the Tony- and Grammy-winning 2008 show ‘‘In the Heights,’’ as his generation’s preeminent musical theater auteur. ‘‘Hamilton’’ is the product of an unlikely meeting of two minds, across a gulf of centuries. ‘‘When I encountered Alexander Hamilton I was immediately captivated,’’ Miranda says. ‘‘He’s an inspirational figure to me. And an aspirational one.’’

    The genesis of ‘‘Hamilton’’ has already entered theatrical lore. While on vacation in Mexico in 2008, Miranda cracked Ron Chernow’s doorstop biography, ‘‘Alexander Hamilton,’’ which was nominated in 2004 for the National Book Critics Circle award and won the George Washington Book Prize. A few dozen pages in, Miranda’s new project began leaping to life. In Hamilton, he saw a figure he recognized: a word-drunk firebrand with untrammeled ambition, raw talent, an outsize ego and a lust for combat, verbal and otherwise. Miranda saw a rapper.

      Why was she still taking money from the Prison Industrial Complex?Where are the policy papers about reduced sentencing? What does she propose for those who are being released from prison? Where is her stance on legalizing marijuana? Where is all of this, SG2? I remember in 2008, when then Senator Obama was talking about the reforms that he is inacting now, and Candidate Hillary Clinton opposed him…
      Yes, we will continue to bring the receipts…not only on her, but all those Blackademics who pursed their lips the past 7 years to criticize President Obama about everything, but can’t seem to open their phucking mouths about any of this.

      I passed out last night still typing responses to you and Ametia…It’s been a rough past 5 days trying to meet a deadline on a project which I completed yesterday…So I was typing and posting last night with one eye shut…

      And even though it’s been mostly sleepless nights and I was exhausted, I just desperately wanted to catch up with all the blog posts I’d missed these past few days..

      The spirit was willing, but the body was so weak…I didn’t stir until this morning even though I was told that I woke up before I was finally tucked into bed, asking for my laptop..

      I didn’t even know Hillary met with Trayvon’s parents…If this is not the most blatantly opportunistic and exploitative and straight-up disrespectful move ever –

      How do you wait 4 years to express condolences??? – the young boy was murdered February 2012, Hillary quit the administration in January 2013 to run for office. She could have even made a detour on her failed book tour to meet with not just Trayvon’s parents, but at the very least, Eric Garner’s family who live right there with her in New York…but she waits until she’s on her campaign tour 4 years later to meet..?

    Mississippi Flag Backer Accused of Tossing Bomb in Wal-Mart

    A man who’s known for flying a 4-foot-long Mississippi state flag on his car has been accused of bombing a Wal-Mart because the chain stopped selling the flag, the police chief said Monday.

    The explosive made a loud bang but did no damage when it was thrown early Sunday into the 24-hour Wal-Mart in Tupelo, Police Chief Bart Aguirre said Monday. He said bomb technicians reported that the package held enough explosive to damage the store if it had been assembled differently.

    Marshall E. Leonard of Tupelo, a northeast Mississippi city of 34,500, was jailed on a charge of detonating an explosive, and police were searching his car and home, Aguirre said.

    Wal-Mart is among retailers that stopped selling merchandise bearing reproductions of the Confederate battle flag — which makes up the upper left section of the Mississippi state flag — after the June 17 killing of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

    Some Mississippi cities and institutions also have stopped flying the state flag.

    “He’s a strong supporter of keeping that flag flying. … This is his way of bringing attention to that,” Aguirre said.

    A group of middle-aged whites in the U.S. is dying at a startling rate

    A large segment of white middle-aged Americans has suffered a startling rise in its death rate since 1999, according to a review of statistics published Monday that shows a sharp reversal in decades of progress toward longer lives.

    The mortality rate for white men and women ages 45-54 with less than a college education increased markedly between 1999 and 2013, most likely because of problems with legal and illegal drugs, alcohol and suicide, the researchers concluded. Before then, death rates for that group dropped steadily, and at a faster pace.

    An increase in the mortality rate for any large demographic group in an advanced nation has been virtually unheard of in recent decades, with the exception of Russian men after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

    The rising death rate was accompanied by an increase in the rate of illness, the authors wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

    Jury Awards Ex-Employee Of Roscoe’s Chicken N’ Waffles $1.6M In Race Discrimination Suit

    NGLEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A jury has awarded a former employee of Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles more than $1 million in damages after he sued the popular restaurant chain alleging racial discrimination and wrongful termination.

    Daniel Beasley, a black man, filed a racial discrimination and wrongful-termination suit against the soul food chain that’s popular with celebrities, including Snoop Dogg and Larry King.

    “It’s owned by an African American owner, but he gives full authority to the Hispanics to run it,” Beasley said.

    According to Beasley’s lawsuit, managers at the restaurant on Pico Boulevard harassed him for being black and gave preferential treatment to Latino employees, including better schedules.

    The grandfather from Compton says he complained to human resources and the company’s owner, but nothing was done.

    He was later fired for what he says was retaliation.

          Let’s not even try to remember the many times BWD thought that her support for POTUS meant she got to berate him like a child when he didn’t do exactly as she expected. Or treat him like her very own personal Mandingo as they are wont to, when they’re feeling frisky..

          I have far too many memories from the past 8 years and some of these memories and the characters associated with them, leave me quite sour and completely unimpressed – and un-fooled..

          If they thought they were smarter and knew better than the President as they often did in the early days of the presidency, imagine what they think of lowly us..?
          They humor us because they think we can’t see through their sly crap most of the time..

          I told you fam, you haven’t seen anything yet…Wait till Hillary loses..then and only then will the truest form of entitlement and white privilege converge to show their displeasure and teach us a lesson..

          It almost reminds me of when prop 8 passed here in California, and they decided it was black folks who came out to vote for President Obama who voted for it in droves…Never mind that black people account for only 6% of qualified voters –

          They didn’t come for the Mormons (who came in in droves from Utah) and the Catholic church who converged and poured tons of money and foot soldiers to pass prop 8.

          But black people – including black gay people (who’ve always complained of the racism within the gay community even in ‘liberal’ San Francisco!) – became the literal punching bags for white gay people not only in California but all over the country. The hate was palpable. Some black people were even spit on.

          Yup…even after she shut down her blog, she’d still go on those twitter rampages because of something POTUS did or didn’t do that made her mad – I think it was the infantilizing of a grown man, a President no less, a husband to a strong black woman – no matter whether they were salivating or scolding, that really got to me.. it was so disrespectful and insulting even if they voted for and supported him –

          That’s why when you post their tweets these days, I can’t stop rolling my eyes – Some of them have gotten slicker, but this Hillary as their first will have some of them unraveling and a few n words might even be hurled at us before this is all over..

          They don’t know how to do humble genuinely or long enough – even if it means thats what it takes to get their fellow Becky into the White House..

          I’m searching for a comment I read earlier on that Instagram account that FLOTUS reposted with the kids dressed as hr and POTUS.

          There were a few posts of black celebrities in Atlanta at the Hillary event – and boy you should read the comments…Black people aren’t as easily fooled as some of them think…people see..

      Here in California, many Chinese immigrants who came to the U.S in the 80’s idolized Reagan who they credit for being here. The Vietnamese population, particularly in Southern California, still vote Republican – just not in the large numbers they used to.. For some, it’s the intersection of their conservative Christian or Catholic faith with what was supposedly the ‘conservative’ values of the Republican party..

    UPDATE: 11:50 p.m. EDT — Following the publication of email addresses and phone numbers reportedly belonging to members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) another post on text-sharing site Pastebin is claiming to name nine politicians who are members of the KKK. The list of four senators and five city mayors is completely unverified and the official Operation KKK Twitter account has distanced itself from the listing saying: “We won’t release names without due diligence. We discourage the circulation of disinformation and will not promote an unverifiable list of politicians.” However the original tweet has since been deleted by the group.

    The listing names the politicians, their spouses and the local chapter of the KKK to which they are purported to belong. The person who posted the information said they redacted the politicians’s home addresses to prevent anyone taking action directly against them.

    ‘Teacher of the Year’ Quits When Told She’s Unqualified

    A longtime Alabama educator who has won Teacher of the Year honors resigned last week when her “frustration boiled over” with bureaucracy. Informed that she lacked the state qualifications to teach 5th grade, Ann Marie Corgill resigned from Birmingham City Schools, NPR reports.

    “After 21 years of teaching in grades 1-6, I have no answers as to why this is a problem now, so instead of paying more fees, taking more tests, and proving once again that I am qualified to teach, I am resigning,” she wrote in her resignation letter. Corgill, who was 2014-2015 Alabama Teacher of the Year and a 2015 National Teacher of the Year finalist, this year joined the staff at Oliver Elementary as a 2nd-grade teacher; she was then shifted to teach 5th grade. But roughly a month into her new role, a state education administrator called and said she lacked the certification to continue, AL.com reports.

    St. Louis names Maya Angelou’s birthplace a landmark

    A 127-year-old brick two-story in the Gate District is the city’s latest landmark.

    The house at 3130 Hickory St. was the birthplace of author and activist Maya Angelou, who was born Marguerite Johnson in April 1928. The St. Louis Board of Aldermen approved the designation as a city landmark on Friday, limiting the alterations the owners can make to the property.

    “This modest house in a once-segregated St. Louis neighborhood helps to convey the journey Ms. Angelou made to become a renowned author, poet, performer and outspoken civil rights activist, and although Ms. Angelou’s life was spent in many places in the United States and abroad, the property comprises an important part of the history of one of the most prominent and respected women of her generation,” reads the landmark designation legislation.

In an Oct. 21 gathering, Ryan reportedly assured his right-wing allies that he would not pursue immigration reform while President Obama is in office – a leading Freedom Caucus concern.

    Less than a week later, Ryan specifically pledged to Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) that immigration reform is dead for the remainder of this Congress.

    It was of interest, then, to see the newly elected Speaker hit the Sunday shows yesterday, trying to make the case that the death of the policy priority is President Obama’s fault.
    In an interview airing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Ryan said the president has “proven himself to be untrustworthy on this issue.”

    Ryan said consensus on other issues affecting immigration policy, such as border enforcement, could be possible. But because the president took executive action, comprehensive reform is off the table.
    “I don’t think we can trust the president on this issue,” the Republican told Chuck Todd. “The president has proven himself untrustworthy on this issue because he tried to unilaterally rewrite the law himself. Presidents don’t write laws. Congress does.”

    It’s important to understand how deeply foolish this is because Americans are going to be hearing this ridiculous talking point quite a bit.

    First, the White House took executive action on immigration – just as Reagan and H. W. Bush took executive action on immigration – which isn’t the same as writing new laws. The Speaker of the House really ought to understand the difference.

    Second, for members of Congress to suggest the mean ol’ president hurt Congress’ feelings, so lawmakers will allow a problem to go unresolved indefinitely, is a woefully immature approach to policymaking.

    Third, when Ryan refers to “consensus” issues, what he’s arguing is that Republicans are willing to work on a package in which Republicans get everything they want, while Democrats get none of what they want. Ryan must realize that policymaking doesn’t work this way.

    Before the presidential race even began, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus made no secret of his concerns about candidate debates. Priebus and his team, unhappy with the way the debate process unfolded in 2011 and 2012, invested quite a bit of time and energy in overhauling the party’s entire debate model, sweating the details over locations, networks, and moderators.

    The RNC’s planning failed spectacularly. In the wake of three prime-time events, much of the party is furious with the debate structure, to the point that a campaign-led revolt – unlike anything we’ve seen in the modern era – is starting to take shape. MSNBC’s Alex Jaffe highlighted the latest developments last night:
    Republican campaigns agreed to take a larger role in negotiating the parameters of the upcoming presidential debates and largely cut the Republican National Committee out of the process during an unprecedented meeting of advisors for all but one campaign on Sunday night.
    There was some discussion in advance of last night’s gathering that the deliberations would lead to an entirely new, campaign-driven debate process, but that does not appear to be the case, at least not yet. Indeed, as Alex Jaffe’s report added, “[A]side from the agreement to take a greater role in the process, little consensus on specific details came out of the meeting.”

    GAIL, Texas — In rural Borden County, 12 people signed up for Obamacare this year.

    Livid over the government telling them they must buy something and loath to take anything that looks like a “handout,” the uninsured here are likely to stay that way. As Obamacare’s third open enrollment season began Sunday, this rock-solid conservative community of about 650 people offers a window into the challenges health law advocates face to expand coverage around the country.

    “Health care is fine, if you can afford it,” said Brenda Copeland, a middle-aged woman who works at the Coyote Country Store and café, along with her two grown daughters, all of whom are uninsured. Copeland has had health insurance only once in her life, and opted to pay Obamacare’s tax penalty earlier this year rather than buy a plan.

    “I hope Obamacare goes down the toilet,” she added.

      When these people get sick they go to an emergency room and never pay the bill because they haven’t got any money. The cost of their healthcare is then absorbed by hospitals and reflected in how much they have to charge for their services to stay in business. And that is exactly the system that is failing, that must change.

    JEB BUSH released a health-care plan last month that would disassemble Obamacare’s “three-legged stool” — its federal mandate requiring all individuals to carry health insurance, its ban on insurance companies denying or pricing out people with preexisting conditions, and its subsidies to help people buy coverage. In its place, he would assemble a flimsier one.

    Like other notable GOP Obamacare replacement plans, the core of Mr. Bush’s is a federal tax credit for all people lacking health-care coverage from an employer. The credit would not enable low-income people to buy comprehensive health-care plans of the quality Obamacare requires and helps needy people afford. Instead, it would enable them to buy low-value, high­deductible “catastrophic” plans that protect against high-cost medical events. To help people finance everyday medical costs, Mr. Bush would dramatically increase the amount of money people could put into tax-advantaged health savings accounts.

    The idea is to require states to meet outcomes, not tell them how to get there. Bush aides insist the states would “deliver more with less” by cutting waste and slowing growth of health-care costs. But they don’t say how much money states would have to save, how much they would get from the Treasury or how many people would ultimately be covered under the plan. Without these and other specifics, the proposal is hardly more than wishful thinking.

    Mr. Bush would drag the country through another massive policy transition in order to reduce the value of health coverage now available to vulnerable people. He would enact a plan premised on the hope that the states will solve all of the hardest problems. If this is the alternative, better to keep Obamacare and move on.

      You didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. Hillary supporters have an immense amount of public denial about her political past. But at some deeper level, I’m sure that those who are conscious know she’s got some serious problems. That’s why the Democrats didn’t want any competition for the nomination because they didn’t want too much scrutiny. So, they have effectively rammed her down our throats. And, as things stand now, she’ll get the nomination. We, that is anyone who doesn’t support her, are supposed to just suck it up and not complain, and certainly not point out her political flaws.

    Because, when the judge asked for the receipts for where these women would go for their healthcare, they gave him some bullshyt list, not thinking that the judge has a staff that would VERIFY that the people on the list could be legitimate providers……

    the judge found chiropractors and dentists and all sorts of folks that didn’t qualify.

    The judge then pointed this out, and asked for a list of LEGITIMATE PROVIDERS that could be used as alternates to Planned Parenthood.

    The list returned had less than 50 names on it.
