    VSB’s take on Taye Diggs?

    1. Taye Diggs believes you are an idiot. And yes, “you” encapsulates literally any and every person who happens to be reading this. If you are reading this — or, if you’re not reading this and just happen to be alive somewhere breathing air or eating Baja Fresh — Taye Diggs believes that you’re a nincompoop. A fool. A fucking dunce. Because only an idiot would see a Black man and his lighter-skinned Black son, and then see the son’s White mother, and have no fucking idea what was going on. Like you just saw a squirrel doing Crossfit. On the back of a Black unicorn.

But, apparently, this is one of his rationales for wanting his son to be considered biracial instead of Black.

    ……………….

Because, when it manifests as a Black man (or woman) teaching his (or her) Black son (or daughter) that they are not Black, that they will not be seen as and treated like a Black person, they are now actively jeopardizing that child’s life. The difference between a Black child being aware of and embracing of his Blackness — and everything that means — and being taught that he or she is not Black could literally be the difference between that child dying at 16 or dying at 86.

White House Launches $118M Initiative for Women & Girls of Color
    Nov 18, 15 by Qwest7

*Following in the footsteps of its “My Brother’s Keeper” program to help boys of color, the White House is stepping up again with a similar effort aimed at providing assistance to women and girls of color.
The Washington Post reports the effort was made known last Friday (Nov. 13) at a forum hosted by the White House Council on Women and Girls that sought to determine ways it could improve the lives of females of color via a commitment of $118 million in assistance from public and private organizations to kick things off.
The money for the five-year initiative will be used to help bring women and girls out of poverty.
The Post notes the mention of a report called “Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color” by panelists at the forum. The report touches on various issues affecting the group that include education, criminal justice, health and economic conditions. In addition the education section of the report was noted in pursuing ways to reduce the number of school suspensions for girls of color as well as highlighting the council’s push to encourage more young women to pursue STEM specialties.

Funds for the initiative are set to come from the Ms. Foundation for Women and Prosperity Together as the organizations pledged to contribute $100 million over five years to develop programs to lift these women and girls out of poverty. Prosperity Together is comprised of 20 different women’s organizations. Founded in 1972, he Ms. Foundation is dedicated toward delivering funding and resources to organizations that work to elevate the voice of women and girls across lines of race and class in communities throughout the nation.

Ex-NFL player Rae Carruth hired hit man to be sure this baby wasn’t born, but now that baby is 16

    BY SCOTT FOWLER

In 1999, they tried to kill Chancellor Lee Adams before he was born.

They conspired to commit murder – to shoot and kill his mother. That way the unborn baby’s life would end, too, and his father wouldn’t have to pay any child support. It was a horrific crime that altered Chancellor’s life forever and exposed us all to the dark side of professional sports.

And yet here is the son of former Carolina Panther first-round draft pick Rae Carruth. He is smiling, holding onto his grandmother’s arm and walking slowly toward the horse named “Raider” that he rides every week.

Chancellor turned 16 Monday. He already had his “Sweet 16” party. He got to have a magician and his favorite dessert – yellow cake, with strawberry mousse in the middle and whipped cream icing.

“Chancellor is not just surviving,” says his grandmother, Saundra Adams. “He is thriving.”

How one of the nation’s most promising basketball players became homeless

    By Terrence McCoy November 17
On a summer day in 2012, a basketball superstar walked into Jimmy John’s in downtown Washington just as employees were attempting to kick out a homeless woman. Chamique Holdsclaw, who was drafted first overall in 1999 by the Washington Mystics and played in six all-star games, tried to ignore the commotion until she suddenly became part of it.

“Chamique,” the homeless woman begged. “Please buy me a sandwich.”

Holdsclaw had nearly mistaken her for a man. She was tall — taller than Holdsclaw, a former forward who stands 6-foot-2. She was dressed in baggy, dark men’s clothing. Her long fingers clutched a cigarette. She seemed disoriented, Holdsclaw recalled, maybe even on drugs. But her voice was smooth, feminine — and familiar.

Then it hit Holdsclaw. This wasn’t just another homeless person in a city full of them. It was Schuye LaRue.

LaRue was once one of the most promising basketball players in the country. Named ACC Rookie of the Year while at the University of Virginia, she was later selected to the All-ACC First Team and still holds a school record for rebounds. Famed basketball coach Pat Summitt called her “one of the most impressive freshmen in the country.” The Los Angeles Sparks selected her 27th overall in the 2003 draft.

“Don’t you know who that is?” Holdsclaw said she sputtered at the employees. Didn’t they know how good she was?

Ben Carson’s campaign made a U.S. map and put a bunch of states in the wrong place
    November 18 at 11:10 AM

Happy Geography Awareness Week! Recognizing that “too many young Americans are unable to make effective decisions, understand geo-spatial issues, or even recognize their impacts as global citizens,” National Geographic created this annual observance to “raise awareness to this dangerous deficiency in American education.”

Ben Carson’s presidential campaign inadvertently underscored this point Tuesday night, when it took to social media to share a map of the United States in which five New England states were placed in the wrong location. The campaign deleted the Twitter and Facebook posts Wednesday morning after media outlets and social media users pointed out the error.

President Obama Not Afraid to Use the Secret Service to Keep Dudes Away From Malia

Though no guy has been brave enough to risk coming to the White House to pick Malia up for a date, the President said he’s caught some wannabe suitors giving her the up-and-down. “I’ve seen some folks glancing at her in ways that made me not happy,” he admitted. And when that happens, “Just keep an eye on him,” he says he tells the Secret Service.

Chris Christie and ‘the abject failure of leadership’
    11/18/15 10:46 AM
    By Steve Benen

Gov. Chris Christie wrote a letter to President Obama yesterday, noting that a couple of months ago, a young man in New Jersey “pled guilty to charges of conspiring to provide material support and resources to ISIS.” The Republican governor added that the man plotted with three other men. Therefore, Christie said, the White House should halt plans “to accept more Syrian refugees” into the United States.

Even for him, this was genuinely bizarre. The New Jersey man Christie referenced wasn’t a Syrian refugee. Neither was anyone else involved in the plot. In the post-9/11 era, not a single Syrian refugee has ever been charged in the United States with having anything to do with terrorism, making Christie’s argument a rather comical example of a non-sequitur.

In fact, the incident the governor mentioned didn’t stop Christie from recently supporting a policy welcoming Syrian refugees.

But that was before the political winds changed – and before the governor started talking about his fear of orphan toddlers. The Washington Post’s Dan Drezner, a center-right observer, called Christie out yesterday for his “abject failure of leadership.”
There’s a word for someone who reacts to seemingly scary situations by getting even more frightened. I believe that word is “wimp.” Which means that, based on his rhetoric, Christie might be a presidential contender also-ran, but he is a major league wimp.
Drezner’s point is more than fair, though part of me wonders if something even more alarming is happening here.

It’s hardly a secret that Christie’s presidential campaign has struggled in recent months – he was recently demoted from a prime-time debate to the kids’ table – and the candidate has no doubt been looking for a way to get ahead in a crowded field.

Carson advisers fret over his foreign-policy ignorance
    11/18/15 08:00 AM
    By Steve Benen
A presidential candidate’s personal advisers can occasionally offer insights no one else has. They see White House hopefuls in unguarded and unscripted moments, giving the advisers a unique perspective.

It was of interest in 2012, for example, when Mitt Romney’s advisers conceded the campaign had invested so little energy in focusing on national security that even they were “uncertain what camp he would fall into, and are uncertain themselves about how he would govern.”

But the New York Times reported late yesterday on an even more striking example. Ben Carson’s advisers conceded that “intense tutoring” for the retired right-wing neurosurgeon has so far had “little effect” on the candidate’s preparedness on matters of foreign affairs.
“Nobody has been able to sit down with him and have him get one iota of intelligent information about the Middle East,” Duane R. Clarridge, a top adviser to Mr. Carson on terrorism and national security, said in an interview. He also said Mr. Carson needed weekly conference calls briefing him on foreign policy so “we can make him smart.”
The article highlighted Carson’s recent appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” where he was asked to identify a country he would reach out to join an anti-ISIS coalition. The Republican candidate, despite multiple opportunities, couldn’t name one.

“He’s been briefed on it so many times,” Carson aide Armstrong Williams told the Times. “I guess he just froze.”

Nothing says “presidential preparedness” like “I guess he just froze.”

Responding to the article, a Carson campaign spokesperson downplayed Duane Clarridge’s role as an adviser to the candidate. “[Clarridge] is coming to the end of a long career of serving our country,” the campaign said in a statement to Business Insider. “Mr. Clarridge’s input to Dr. Carson is appreciated but he is clearly not one of Dr. Carson’s top advisers. For The New York Times to take advantage of an elderly gentleman and use him as their foil in this story is an affront to good journalistic practices.”

14 Groups Getting Koch Brothers Dark Money To Turn America Into A Right-Wing Playground
AUTHOR: OLIVER WILLIS NOVEMBER 17, 2015 8:54 PM

The billionaire Koch brothers – industrialists Charles and David from Koch Industries – like to say they aren’t involved in “politics” much. But like everything surrounding the right-wing brothers, that’s a lot of smoke and mirrors.

While the Kochs don’t necessarily directly involve themselves in the nitty gritty of electoral politics all the time through direct donations to candidates and parties, they keep themselves in the loop by funding a variety of pressure groups, advocacy organizations and non-profits that push a right wing ideology on a constant basis. These groups don’t wait for election years to be active, and are in the trenches at a micro-local level promoting a spectrum of causes that often happen to fatten the pockets of the brothers.

One such vehicle used by the Kochs is the Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(6) trade association (the Kochs also operate Freedom Partners Action Fund, which directly injects money in political races). In 2014 this group took in $126 million, spent about $41 million on overhead and poured the remaining cash on outside groups. Here they are:

Obama comes under criticism from Dems over Paris rhetoric
    11/17/15 04:56 PM EST

President Obama is coming under criticism from some in his own party over his comments Monday about last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris.

Influential liberal columnists and Democratic strategists say Obama came off as condescending and scornful during his press conference in Antalya, Turkey — missing an opportunity to show strength and leadership in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“I don’t want him shooting from the hip and making empty threats, but I think he could have done a better job in articulating the anger that many people feel toward what happened in not only Paris but Beirut as well,” said Democratic strategist Jim Manley, a former adviser to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

“What happened in Paris and in Beirut is going to require an aggressive response.”

Those comments echoed Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson’s assessment that Obama’s tone “was all wrong” in addressing the Paris attacks.

Typically an Obama ally, Robinson in a column published on Tuesday wrote that “at times he was patronizing, at other times he seemed annoyed and almost dismissive.”

“That’s not the tone you want to strike to the public, that’s not the tone you want to send to our allies and enemies,” said Democratic strategist Brad Bannon.

Trump, Clinton Seen as Best at Handling Terrorism

A new Reuters poll finds that American voters are evenly split between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as their top choice to address the issue of terrorism following the Paris attacks.

“Given Clinton’s background as a former secretary of state it is perhaps not surprising that she did reasonably well in the poll. However, Trump’s good showing upends an emerging narrative that the Paris shootings and suicide bombings would prompt voters to rethink their support for the real estate billionaire, who leads the field of Republican presidential candidates.

Mayor de Blasio Has Lost Support of White New Yorkers, Poll Finds
By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM, ALEXANDER BURNS and DALIA SUSSMAN
    NOV. 17, 2015

Nearing the midpoint of his term, Mayor Bill de Blasio is confronting a city that is deeply divided about his ability to lead, with his efforts to create a more liberal New York overshadowed by growing worries about homelessness and crime, a new poll finds.

Nowhere is that concern more visible than among a group, long cool to Mr. de Blasio, that he has now decisively lost: whites.

Just 28 percent of white New Yorkers approve of the Democratic mayor’s performance, and 59 percent now disapprove, up sharply from the start of his term, according to a citywide poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College. Nearly half say that the city is a worse place to live under his watch — only 9 percent say it is better — and 51 percent say New York is now less safe, even as crime statistics reach historic lows.

Over all, 52 percent of New Yorkers say the city is on the wrong track, including 62 percent of whites and 51 percent of Hispanics. Black residents are evenly split.

Mr. de Blasio’s support among white residents has descended to a level so dismal that it has challenged a core assumption of his political strategy: that in a diversifying city, moderate white voters had lost much of their electoral influence, and that the mayor’s path to re-election runs through nonwhite communities.

    The Koch intelligence agency
As the billionaires’ network works to reshape U.S. politics, it keeps a close eye on the left.
    By Kenneth P. Vogel
    11/18/15 05:14 AM EST

The competitive intelligence effort, reported here for the first time, also hints at the audaciousness of the Koch network’s mission. While the Republican Party focuses on winning elections, the Kochs want to realign American politics, government and society around free enterprise philosophies that they hope to spread more broadly.

A key to accomplishing the mission, from the Kochs’ perspective, is countering super PACs and other big-money groups funded by rich liberals, as well as allied public sector unions and academic and media elites. The Kochs’ allies feel that those forces have worked together for decades with Democratic politicians and government bureaucrats to institutionalize the philosophy that heavy regulation and taxation of business is the only way to ensure an equitable society.

The Kochs concluded that defeating this well-funded left-wing infrastructure requires tracking the professional left in real time ― a capability they realized they lacked after the 2012 election. In the run-up to that election, the Koch network spent $400-million-plus attacking Democratic politicians and policies, only to see President Barack Obama win re-election and his party maintain control of the Senate. A forensic audit of the network’s efforts concluded the Kochs had been out-maneuvered by the left on the airwaves, in the data war and on the ground. Vowing not to let that happen again, the network began investing in the competitive intelligence team and other efforts to keep tabs on the left.

To be sure, the Kochs’ operation isn’t the only one focused on pulling back the curtain on its opponents. In fact, liberal activists and groups have frequently worked to expose the activities of the Koch brothers and their network. But the competitive intelligence team, like so many other Koch-backed programs, appears to be unique in its scale and its thoroughly methodological approach.

My white neighbor thought I was breaking into my own apartment. Nineteen cops showed up.
By Fay Wells November 18 at 6:00 AM

On Sept. 6, I locked myself out of my apartment in Santa Monica, Calif. I was in a rush to get to my weekly soccer game, so I decided to go enjoy the game and deal with the lock afterward.

A few hours and a visit from a locksmith later, I was inside my apartment and slipping off my shoes when I heard a man’s voice and what sounded like a small dog whimpering outside, near my front window. I imagined a loiterer and opened the door to move him along. I was surprised to see a large dog halfway up the staircase to my door. I stepped back inside, closed the door and locked it.

I heard barking. I approached my front window and loudly asked what was going on. Peering through my blinds, I saw a gun. A man stood at the bottom of the stairs, pointing it at me. I stepped back and heard: “Come outside with your hands up.” I thought: This man has a gun and will kill me if I don’t come outside. At the same time, I thought: I’ve heard this line from policemen in movies. Although he didn’t identify himself, perhaps he’s an officer.
