“Silver Bells” is a classic Christmas song, composed by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans.
“Silver Bells” was first performed by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in the motion picture The Lemon Drop Kid, filmed in July–August 1950 and released in March 1951.[1] The first recorded version was by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards, released by Decca Records in October 1950.[2] After the Crosby and Richards recording became popular, Hope and Maxwell were called back in late 1950 to refilm a more elaborate production of the song.
“Silver Bells” started out as the questionable “Tinkle Bells.” Said Evans, “We never thought that tinkle had a double meaning until Jay went home and his [first] wife said, ‘Are you out of your mind? Do you know what the word tinkle is?'” The word is child’s slang for urination.

Regarding this mistrial, there’s so much more at play here. Sadly this verdict had little to do with the strength of the prosecution’s case, and everything to do with the jurors, the scarily outsized power (physical and psychological) a mostly corrupt and warped law enforcement undeservedly wields and commands – (even when caught, and on trial), over the citizenry overall, and the conscious and unconscious stereotypes, biases, conditioning that mostly instructs, shapes and impels the direction and the way people (yes, that sadly includes other black people in many instances) will see, feel and respond, especially to a black subject – in this case, a clear victim. A poor one at that…and worse still, this stereotypical and sure to be damning dead “son of an illiterate heroin addict”..
Stuff like concern/fear for their own…and that they or their own relatives – some of whom may or may not already be entangled in the system and currently at the mercy of the same Sheriffs department, will be targeted/witch-hunted and made to pay – or on the flip side, any pending charges ‘favorably reviewed’, post-trial; The idea that this young man somehow though not guilty of anything at the time he was unjustly arrested, inevitably brought this upon himself by not amounting to much, being a ne’er do well, not coming from or having a ‘respectable’ even if poor background – already framed and clouded the way his murder and the trial that was never even supposed to be but for the bravery and integrity of a young and courageous State’s Attorney, would play out…
Even as we all ponder what did or didn’t happen in that deliberation room, nothing, nothing at all, will surprise or shock us if and when details start trickling out. Won’t be surprised if we find that one or more of the jurors based on evidence presented, were rightly convinced of Officer William Porter’s guilt on all 4 charges, or that some were unwillingly to stop blaming the dead young man for his own unwarranted and indefensible murder at the hands of those charged with protecting him…that some remained detached from the idea of black life, (and this one of this ‘ilk’ especially) as valuable – all while clinging to the supremacy and infallibility of police (yes, even the black ones – if only for the purpose of setting the stage for acquitting the white ones – and in the long-term, ensuring that no other District Attorney ever have the nerve to take on or embarrass let alone convict the almighty police)…
Don’t even be surprised if there was yet one more of those now ubiquitous and desperately shallow women pining for ‘love’ and always on the look out for it, seated on that jury. The sort who’re forever viewing any man – politician, police, random guy on t.v, at the gas station, at the airport, on the train, on the garbage truck – married or not – through the prism of ‘romantic’/sexual interest’… You know, that uncontained and now out of control madness that has overtaken our society where unrestrained declarations of ‘he’s so cute, he’s dreamy, he sets my ovaries on fire’ for just about any man in the vicinity, is all the rage…Don’t be surprised if someone thought William Porter was ‘cute’ or even ‘dreamy’ and on those basis alone refused to convict him…Don’t be surprised too to find that there were a couple of Ben Carson or Clarence Thomas types on that jury looking to shore-up their I’m that different, good negro bona fides..trying to impress or to make a point at any cost – even when an innocent young man has been murdered….Not all our skin folk are our kinfolk fam…

I wish Stephanie Rawlings-Blake would just go away…And take with her the other varied opportunists – including some of the old brigade, and the young ones in the BLM, who were nowhere to be found during this trial – and whose constant presence and voice could and would have made all the difference – even if to reassure some of the braver jurors that they had their backs, and to go ahead and do the right thing…
But they were all no-shows…way too busy; Way too busy burrowing their way up Hillary Clinton’s a*** and falling all over themselves to ingratiate themselves to the Clintons, and the young ones way too busy having twitter fights and leveraging their newfound notoriety for self-aggrandizement and access…

Blogger, Web strategist Luvvie Ajayi has made a brand for herself
Chicago’s Luvvie Ajayi reaches a pop-culture savvy audience of black women and others with her blog Awesomely Luvvie, and some of the nation’s biggest brands have taken notice.
Comcast hired her to host a “Scandal” viewing party during the 2013 Blogalicious conference in Atlanta. McDonald’s had her take over its 365Black Twitter account during the Essence Festival in New Orleans in July. This fall, she hosted Rosa Regale sparkling wine’s “Empire” watch parties in Houston and Chicago. And on Tuesdays, she live tweets “Being Mary Jane” for BET.
What draws the big names? Her distinct but topically diverse audience, which has dubbed itself LuvNation and is made up largely but not entirely of African-American women.
“It goes across gender, color, sexual orientation, because people relate to what I’m saying,” said Ajayi, 30. “The power of my blog kind of transverses culture, and you don’t have to be black to understand my writing or to find the value in it.”
At her Awesomely Luvvie pop culture blog, she draws 10,000 visitors a day to her recaps of episodes of “Scandal,” riffs on style and life choices of celebs and random folks, and weighs in on social issues of the day. She has 140,000 likes on her Facebook page; 24,000 followers on Instagram and more than 65,000 on Twitter.
Celebs have taken note, as well.
“Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes is a follower. Actress Holland Taylor invited Ajayi to come see her in a Broadway production after the blogger tipped the “Two and a Half Men” star to the slang meaning of “shade” and introduced her to “Basketball Wives.” Actor Jeff Perry tweeted out a Scandal Bingo board that Ajayi and YouTube vlogger and MTV “Decoded” host Franchesca Ramsey created for the Season Two finale.
Ajayi began her Awesomely Luvvie blog in 2006, a reboot of a blog she’d run at the behest of friends while a student at the University of Illinois, where she earned a degree in psychology.
She went on to work as a marketing coordinator for Community Media Workshop. In 2009, she and Karyn Brianne Lee began The Red Pump Project, a nonprofit HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention outreach for women and girls.
Every March 10, it encourages bloggers to post a red pump widget and asks people to wear red shoes. The effort has drawn a number of high-profile invitations: to the White House for a summit about the Affordable Care Act; to a reception at the One Campaign, where she met singer Elton John; and to Haiti, where she recently spent a week with the State Department doing workshops on HIV/AIDS and social media marketing for nonprofits.
She was laid off from the media job in 2010. But by then, the brands had started calling.
The first, she said, was Gap, which asked her to host a party to promote a new line of jeans.
“That was really cool because it was the first time I looked at my blog and saw people outside of the people I know paying attention,” she said, attributing her audience value to the breadth of what she covers, from Black Lives Matter to hit TV shows.
“That’s one thing brands are understanding is, I’m the blogger who’s not writing about fashion. I’m not writing about beauty. I’m not writing about gossip. I’m not writing about politics,” she said. “I’m writing about all of that. I’m the person they can come to if they just want to reach people who care and have their fingers on pop culture.”
That reach caught the attention of Nielsen, which asked her to help launch the February 2014 Conscious Consumers campaign focused on African-American, Latino and Asian-American spending, said Rebecca Roussell, senior director of Nielsen’s Diverse Intelligence Series.
“I saw she was very influential. She had a plethora of things in her portfolio. It was not only about “Scandal,” but she was also very socially conscious. That was the type of voice I was looking for for this Conscious Consumers campaign,” Roussell said.
“We needed to get a recognizable face and a person that the African-American community trusted. And that was Luvvie.”
Ajayi partipated in a Twitter chat on black spending power in the U.S. and was featured in a video about The Red Pump Project that was housed on a Nielsen microsite.
“She knows this new ballgame as it relates to being an influencer and working with brands,” Roussell said. “She definitely has the business acumen and the brains to eloquently represent a brand.”

It’s a return to greatness.
Nearly 40 years after “Star Wars” exploded the pop culture universe and practically became a religion for generations of fans, and a full decade after many of those same fans felt betrayed and defeated by “Revenge of the Sith,” the seventh “Star Wars” movie could well bear the same subtitle as the original:
“A New Hope.”
What a beautiful, thrilling, joyous, surprising and heart-thumping adventure this is. “The Force Awakens” pops with memorable battle sequences, gives us chills with encore appearances by stars from the original trilogy and introduces more than a half-dozen terrific Next Generation characters.
If the U.S. presidential election were held this weekend, director-producer-co-writer J.J. Abrams might carry the day based on geek support alone.
“The Force Awakens” is set about 30 years after the events of “Return of the Jedi.” Of course Abrams begins with the familiar blue text telling us this all takes place “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” and then we get the iconic yellow crawl text giving us some basic backstory and letting us know where we are now.
And then boom! We’re off and running. (More often, flying and soaring and zigging and zagging.)

A normally friendly forum for Mayor Rahm Emanuel turned hostile Wednesday when student protesters chanting, “16 shots,” interrupted a ceremony called to jump-start a “citywide strategy” aimed at providing expanded opportunities for “every child and young man of color” in Chicago.
Emanuel announced creation of a “My Brother’s Keeper Cabinet” at Urban Prep Academies, 6201 S. Stewart. It’s a charter school that boasts of sending 100 percent of its African-American male graduates to college.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Bruce Goacher, a repo man in a camouflage cap and oil-smudged jacket, praised Donald Trump as he drove his flatbed through Davenport on his way to seize a delinquent borrower’s car.
Trump’s call for barring Muslims from entering the United States may have sparked an international uproar, but it only reinforced Goacher’s support for the Republican Party’s top contender for president.
“He says let’s not bring nobody here until we get to the bottom of it,” Goacher said Tuesday over the rumble of the tow truck’s engine. “I agree 100 percent.”
Men like Goacher are the main reason Trump has sustained his lead in the Republican presidential race for six months. Poll after poll has found that white men with no college degree are among the New York tycoon’s most avid supporters.

Tuesday Night’s Debate was a Disgusting Spectacle: UnAmerican? Dalton Trumbo Versus the Republican Party
Tuesday evening’s CNN Republican Primary Debate was a disgusting spectacle. All parties involved should be embarrassed. CNN should be ashamed for aiding and abetting lies. The GOP’s 2016 presidential candidates should walk out of the public square and exile themselves for the crimes they committed against the truth and the Common Good. What CNN and the GOP offered up in Tuesday evening’s primary presidential debate was a recruitment video for ISIS.
Alas, I was not surprised.
The most disturbing aspect of the GOP debate was the casual use of the word “unAmerican”. Goodness. Is this the 21st century or is it McCarthy’s 1950s? Is America in the midst of a Cold War where sacred Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms are thrown into the garbage because of fear mongering and for Right-wing political expediency?

The media mogul buys a furnished, contemporary home a year after buying 60 acres in Telluride’s Mountain Village

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who last year bought roughly 60 acres near Telluride Ski Resort in Colorado, has bought a nearby property for $14 million.
In a deal that closed last week, Ms. Winfrey bought a fully furnished,
contemporary home in slope-side Mountain Village, according to people with knowledge of the transaction. According to the listing, the five-bedroom home sits on roughly 3.23 acres and measures about 8,700 square feet.
The home has a gym, a glass-and-steel bridge above the great room and a 45-foot-long walkway that leads to a tree-top observation deck with a fire pit, both suspended 35 feet above the ground, the listing said. According to the seller, retired tech executive Bob Wall, it also has a 56-foot-long wine cellar designed to “look as much like a mining tunnel as possible.” The house also has its own funicular to transport skiers directly to the slopes, Mr. Wall said.
…In 2014 Ms. Winfrey purchased about 60 acres of land in Mountain Village with plans to build a home there. This house will serve as a place for her to stay in the area while supervising construction of the new home, said people familiar with the transaction.

CNN’s panelists asked no questions about jobs, wages, the impending Fed rate hike, health care, energy, infrastructure, the federal budget, the federal deficit, the Supreme Court, financial reform, abortion, race, or any other domestic issue unrelated to homeland security. “Americans are more afraid today than they’ve been at any time since 9/11,” Wolf Blitzer declared, and the main theme of the debate—from the candidates, but arguably from the network as well—was that they ought to be even more afraid.

The Plight of the Black Academic
Being a black professor at a predominantly white university can be just as uncomfortable as—if not more so than—being a black student at one.

In his new book, The Scholar Denied, the sociologist Aldon Morris writes that contrary to the discipline’s preferred origin story, the field of sociology was actually founded by W.E.B. DuBois, the first black person to receive a Ph.D. in the United States. DuBois earned his degree from Harvard, but due to rampant racial segregation at the time, he was shut out of many employment opportunities. He ended up working at Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University), a historically black college with few resources, but still managed to do pioneering work in the field of sociology.
Morris describes in clear detail the ways that DuBois’s emphasis on race as a socially constructed—rather than biological—phenomenon threatened white elites of his day, who much preferred Booker T. Washington’s message that blacks should accept and embrace their subordinate status. Furthermore, many white sociologists co-opted DuBois’s innovative research designs, empirical methods, and scientific approach, while failing to credit him as their originator. Morris argues that consequently, DuBois’s centrality to the discipline of sociology and his role as one of the preeminent analysts of race relations have been obscured.
DuBois lived and wrote his most famous books during the early part of the 20th century, but how different are circumstances for black academics today?
The recent student demonstrations at University of Missouri, Yale, Amherst, Emory, and other universities have drawn much-needed attention to the challenges that minority students, particularly black ones, face at predominantly white colleges and universities. There’s a great deal of research—including the work of the sociologists Joe Feagin and Wendy Leo Moore—showing that the conditions black students are protesting are serious, widespread, and often ignored. In one account, Feagin shares a story of a black student who waits after class to ask a white professor a question about that day’s lecture, only to be told “I thought you were waiting to rob me or something.” Another student describes “one of those sad and angry nights” when, walking to the dorm, white students drove by yelling racial slurs and throwing beer cans at him.

I didn’t sleep well last night. I kept waking up and thinking about the deadlocked jury. Praying for justice.
I know what you mean, SG2. I understand. But, to be honest, getting a guilty verdict is the best possible outcome. But, we got charges in a timely matter. We got the right kind of charges. We got a prosecution that was actually trying to win the case. We got the case tried in the jurisdiction where it happened.
All the defense needs is 1. That is how it boils down to.
Yes, I would want Justice for Mr. Gray. But, I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen.

I’m really disappointed because I believe in my soul that the Baltimore Authorities are SERIOUS in trying to get the convictions, because of the types of charges they brought. They’re NOT doing an Anita Alvarez-overcharging so there would be no conviction – they actually want convictions and justice for Mr. Gray.

Without knowing how the jury is split, we can’t even guess what might happen. Since only one person is on trial, we can safely assume they are deadlocked on the most serious charge, but it’s also possible that someone is holding out for a full acquittal on all charges. I’m thinking it is less likely that the holdout is for conviction on the manslaughter charge because that would mean most of the jurors are in favor of acquittal which is difficult to imagine given the composition of the jury and the fact that the trial is in Baltimore. But who knows? If I had to guess, and I am totally guessing, I think the holdout(s) want to acquit the cop on the manslaughter charge.

Would a Ted Cruz Candidacy Be Good for the Country?
In case you’ve forgotten, there was an insurgent vs establishment battle for the Republican presidential nomination back in 2012 too. One big difference was that Mitt Romney was clearly the establishment candidate back then. So conservative writer David Frum mapped out the four possibilities of a Romney vs Tea Party nomination and general election result.
Possibility 1: Romney is nominated, Romney is elected.
Possibility 2: Romney is nominated, Romney loses.
Possibility 3: A tea party Republican is nominated and loses.
Possibility 4: A tea party Republican is nominated and wins.
Being a good establishment conservative, Frum’s preference was #1. But he described #4 as resulting in a “political and economic crisis.” What is most interesting however, is how he described #3:
Yet within the disaster might lurk a silver lining. At least the GOP will get the ideological adventure out of its system. For three years, Republican activists have lived in a fantasy world in which fringe characters like Sarah Palin and Herman Cain somehow “speak for the common sense of the common people.” It seems incredible that anybody could believe such a thing. It seems crazy that anyone would actually need a presidential election to disabuse them of such notions. But as Benjamin Franklin said: “Experience is a hard teacher, but fools will have no other.”

You’ve seen those mini humans. They just look like they hold a wisdom of the years and these are the kids you gotta give strong names to. Names like Rufus, Jebediah, Orelius or Bertha. You can’t name babies who’ve been here before stuff like Jessica, Zach or Timmy. Nope. They need to be called Wilbur or Clementine from jump!

A Study in Contrasts
The message from conservative politicians, fundamentalist religious leaders and right wing media is that the world is on fire and we face an existential threat from radical Islam. When it comes to Republican presidential candidates:
Donald J. Trump, who is leading polls in the Republican presidential primary race, has called for Muslims to be blocked from entering the United States. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, another Republican candidate, has said he plans to introduce legislation barring Syrian Muslim refugees from entering the United States, and Jeb Bush, a Republican rival, has suggested that the authorities allow only Syrian Christians into the country.
As a result of all that fear mongering, we are seeing a surge in the number of hate crimes and threats against Muslim Americans.
Meanwhile, today President Obama spoke at the naturalization service for 31 new Americans who hail from 25 different countries at the National Archives on the 224th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights. He made his position clear.

Congress Finally Comes Through For Ailing Sept. 11 Heroes
Lawmakers have agreed to earmark $8 billion in this year’s measure to keep the government open.

Over 14 years after terrorists hijacked planes to strike the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, lawmakers on Capitol Hill cut a deal Tuesday to provide effectively permanent health care for the thousands of Americans who are now sick and dying because they came forward to help that day.
After remarkably difficult negotiations that prompted critics to create a #WorstResponders hashtag for Congress, legislators finally agreed to an $8.1 billion reauthorization of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, and attached it to the massive omnibus spending bill that will have to pass in order to fund the government.
The spending bill was expected to be posted online imminently Tuesday night, said a senior Republican aide who confirmed the 9/11 bill is included.
“This agreement is incredible news for our 9/11 heroes and their families, and it is a testament to the extraordinary power that Americans can have when they raise their voice and demand action,“ said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).
About $3.5 billion will be designated for the World Trade Center Health Program, guaranteeing that more than 72,000 known responders and survivors will always have access to treatment, including more than 33,000 who already have 9/11-linked illnesses. The program will last 75 years, until 2090.
