This from Bernie, nothing yet from Hillary. I think that calling for a federal investigation is weak sauce. Of course there should be a federal investigation and it should already be complete. The murder happened over a year ago. And there should be federal indictments by now. This whole idea that the state should be allowed to play its hand before the feds think about investigating is flawed. The prosecutor deliberately stalled and it was very clear that he wasn’t seeking an indictment. I want to know how these candidates intend to use the DOJ to enforce civil rights laws. Are they going to investigate PDs, write reports, and maybe a consent decree? Or are they going to indict cops who are criminals and have trials? And what are they looking for in their Attorney General? What is the DOJ’s role in this crisis, as they see it? I want that question asked and answered in a straightforward manner by each candidate.

Bernie Sanders has criticized an Ohio grand jury’s decision Monday not to indict two police officers in connection with the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. “I think we need to have a federal investigation to take a hard look at that. But I will also tell you that we need, nationally, to take a hard look at the use of force,” Sanders told MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry Monday.

Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president, has spoken out about police shootings before and has made criminal justice reform an important aspect of his platform. Earlier this month, he called for an investigation into the Chicago Police Department after a video of police officers shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was released in November. The Vermont senator also called on Chicago officials to resign if they were involved in suppressing the video, and questions continue to arise about how long Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel knew the details of the video.
While he acknowledged Monday that police have a difficult job, Sanders said that he sees a need for a cultural change within police departments in the U.S. “As a nation, what we have got to recognize is that lethal force should be the last response, not the first response — and we’re seeing too much, I think, of shooting in this country,” he said.
When Harris-Perry asked Sanders about gaining the trust of black voters, he talked about how his economic policies would help African-American communities disproportionately affected by issues like low minimum wages and graduation rates. He added that these are the same kinds of issues that make him think Donald Trump supporters would like his policies.
“There is enormous anxiety within the middle class of this country,” Sanders said. “What Trump is doing is saying, okay, I have the solution. We should hate Latinos; we should hate Muslims. Vote for me.’”

There’s no black demographic to court in the New Hampshire primary…
The pre-packaged bag of tricks contain only that which is deemed relevant and effective to winning over the immediate New Hampshire audience who will be voting shortly – and determining who ‘wins’ in the end..
It is all about what they think Iowa and New Hampshire voters want to hear…or what might otherwise offend them…
This is not about a principled, whole and human response that sees fit to enter a broader conversation – engaging an audience that comprises American citizens who though not black, are still parents, grandparents, citizens…engaging them to understand that we’ve got to do better as a country together…that we can’t tackle what they see as their own separate priorities, immediate concerns in isolation of basic human rights for fellow citizens – even of a different race – right here in our country…
(Yes, it’s fantastic that some in these communities are being applauded for reaching out to Syrian immigrants arriving in their communities, but it’s time to also extend some of that humanity, neighborly love, caring and outrage at ‘cruelty’, to the black American child, woman, man murdered in cold blood and deprived of their humanity in forever in cities around this country.)
Making a broader and principled argument about why we should all care..why this is wrong, and why and how we’ve got to do better…
But isn’t that why our union will continue to be imperfect…and why we’ll keep electing self-serving opportunists who only tell us what they think we want to hear to get them elected, humoring and bamboozling those who want to be bamboozled – long enough to get them to aid their political ambitions…We always opt for the myopic…politicians and all…
An empathetic, caring, principled person running for political office will always find a way to have that broader conversation that touches on what matters with all audiences…linking those glaring issues and human stories that may not be of any concern at first to the immediate audience – A real human being will find ways to insist that their audience not ignore the huge short-circuiting fluorescent pink elephant burning a huge hole in the middle of the room…
No matter how fantastic the new paint job requested for the house turns out in the end, if those huge leaks in the roof aren’t addressed – and quickly – and everyone keeps pretending not to notice the swelling walls, sagging ceilings, warped doors…sooner than later, the roof caves in…

The cops executed Tamir Rice, a 12 year old child, and left him to bleed out and die alone without knowing what happened to him, why he was fatally shot, just like Trayvon Martin bled out on the ground and didn’t know why.

We are writing to express our profound concern over how Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty has handled the case of the murder of Tamir Rice. As white leaders of faith, our traditions teach us that justice is central to the building of beloved community; that justice is sorely lacking in how Tamir Rice’s case is being handled.
As you know, last year twelve-year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed in Cleveland, Ohio by Officer Timothy Loehmann while playing in a park. It has been over a year since Tamir’s murder, and neither of the officers involved in this shooting have been charged with a crime. County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty has openly criticized Tamir’s family as having economic motives in seeking justice for Tamir, leaked evidence to the public, and has yet to press charges against the officers. Timothy McGinty has mishandled Tamir Rice’s case at every turn, and has proven himself unfit to serve the public in this matter.
Showing Up for Racial Justice is a national network of white people working for racial justice as part of a multi-racial movement for justice. As white faith leaders with a common commitment to the sacred dignity and worth of all people, we are deeply disturbed by how Black people are being treated by the police and criminal justice system.
