#OregonStandOff: Cliven Bundy’s sons & armed militia occupy federal facility

Oregon MilitiaA large group of armed militia members have broken into and occupied a federal building in Oregon. The group reportedly includes three sons of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who had a tense standoff with federal officials in 2014.

Radical militia members from across the country descended on Harney County, Oregon today to protest the conviction of two local ranchers for arson on federal land. They claim “that the federal government had no authority in Harney County.” The militia occupying the headquarters building at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a splinter group from the larger protest. The gambit seems intended “to provoke a standoff with the federal government.”

In a phone interview with the Oregonian, Ammond Bundy said that “would not rule out violence if law enforcement tries to remove them.” He called the headquarters building “the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds” and said he was “planning on staying…for years.” In a message on Facebook Bundy said he planned on establishing the facility as a base for militia members across the country:

    As one of the leaders of a band of armed, anti-government activists who have taken over a Fish and Wildlife Service building in Oregon, Ammon Bundy has denounced the “tyranny” of the federal government. And he has brought a new round of attention to the anti-government militia movement that in 2014 rallied behind his father, Cliven Bundy, when the elder Bundy and armed supporters confronted federal agents in Nevada. But not long ago, Ammon Bundy sought out help from the government he now decries and received a federal small-business loan guarantee.

    Ammon Bundy runs a Phoenix-based company called Valet Fleet Services LLC, which specializes in repairing and maintaining fleets of semitrucks throughout Arizona. On April 15, 2010—Tax Day, as it happens—Bundy’s business borrowed $530,000 through a Small Business Administration loan guarantee program. The available public record does not indicate what the loan was used for or whether it was repaid. The SBA website notes that this loan guarantee was issued under a program “to aid small businesses which are unable to obtain financing in the private credit marketplace.” The government estimated that this subsidy could cost taxpayers $22,419. Bundy did not respond to an email request for comment about the SBA loan.

    Oregon Considers Wall to Keep Out Angry White Men

    BURNS, OREGON (The Borowitz Report)—A majority of Oregonians favor building a twenty-foot wall along the border of their state to prevent angry white men from getting in, a poll released on Monday shows.

    The survey indicates that Oregonians are fed up with irate male Caucasians pouring into their state and bringing with them guns, violence, and terrorism.

    “This used to be such a nice state,” said Oregon State Senator Carol Foyler, a pro-wall lawmaker. “Since the angry white men came here, parts of it are unrecognizable.”

    But even as support for the Oregon wall grows, critics of the proposal say that it does nothing to address the fact that there are already thousands of angry white men living in the state.

    Those critics favor forcibly removing the angry white men through mass deportations and resettling them elsewhere, possibly in Texas.

    While some argue that the deportation of angry white men would separate them from their families, others believe that their families would be O.K. with seeing them go.

    Republican presidential candidates are staying mum as an armed group has taken over part of a national wildlife refuge in Oregon — even those who supported the father of at least one of the group’s leaders, who had his own standoff with the government in 2014, and have called for limits on federal control over Western land.

    Some of the issues involved in the standoff — constitutional rights, allegations of federal government overreach and individual liberties — have come to the fore in the GOP primary race. And as Western states are poised to play a larger role in the contest, so has the issue of property rights in a region where the federal government controls about half of the land.

    But few candidates seemed willing to wade into any of these issues Sunday as the leaders of the group said they are standing up against government overreach and are prepared to remain there for “as long as it takes.” The group said it is protesting the case of two Oregon ranchers who were convicted of arson in 2012 and are scheduled to report to federal prison Monday. The ranchers were convicted on a broad terrorism charge. Many ranchers and land users in the West lease public land.

    PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Federal officials are flying into Oregon Sunday to take control of the situation in Burns where armed militia have seized control of a building at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

    Sources told KOIN 6 News those officials will work with local officials to try to bring an end to the situation. The FBI will be the lead agency in dealing with the situation, these sources said.

    Law enforcement officials have asked politicians to refrain from public comments on the situation out of fear it could inflame things.

      Well, it would certainly be no surprise if local law enforcement folks were buddies with these terrorists. But the Feds, that’s something else. They need to respond. I read that the townsfolk, apparently the ones who aren’t certified loons, are afraid of these militias and rightfully so.     Now for the idiots taking over the Federal Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. I agree with everybody who says let them starve and freeze-if they want to die, let it be from hunger and cold (it’s 13 degrees with wind chill) as they turn off the power supply and shut off the water. Hopefully as they start to feel frostbite and thirst, they may rethink this needless stand. Unfortunately, I don’t think they have thought this through enough. In a shootout with the Feds, there is only one winner-and it’s not them. And the Feds can certainly wait them out-they’ll be well supplied, rotate watchers and perimiter standers if they decide that’s the better choice. Nothing like that for the domestic terrorists. I doubt if many people will be coming to join them in 13 degree weather, with the prospect of armed Federal Guards blocking off the one road leading to the complex.

    They are fighting to preserve something that cannot be preserved much longer. Logging is going to be replaced soon my more recycled materials that don’t require cutting down strands of tress all the time. Paper is already being recycled heavily(There is a woman in China who buys all the recycled paper materials to create new packaging). A lot is being done with materials that are also being recycled into materials-a lot of aluminum is being recycled, as also rare metals, steel and other things. Fewer mining jobs. And the age of oil will soon be over as electric cars become cheaper-so fewer oil drilling jobs.

    Also the Federal Land Management jobs created are steady jobs in areas where little else would otherwise relocate to-and those jobs are broadbased jobs. The refuge creates jobs for hotel people, souvenir people, people who sell birdwatching and camera supplies, jobs managing the preserve. And these jobs are at least all spring-summer and fall jobs, year after year after year. Also these jobs aren’t liable to relocate to far-away shores And they don’t pollute, bring in roughnecks and the like and leave poor locals to try and clean up the place. Which is plenty of reason for the locals not to side with these
    Bundy folks. And nobody wants their insanity either in other aspects, which is what the Bundy crowd brings as
    well.
