    Gov. Nikki Haley has been chosen to deliver the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address next week.

    The move comes as Haley’s profile has elevated in recent months as a possible vice presidential pick, and follows the biggest summer of her political career surrounded by the Emanuel AME Church shootings and the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse.

    A Kentucky man is spending 60 days in jail after he used a racial epithet in front of a black judge on Monday.

    In courtroom video obtained by WDRB, Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Olu Stevens is seen revoking Adam Satterly’s bond on drug charges.

    “Punk ass n*gger!” Satterly shouts as he turns to walk out of court.

    Moments later, Stevens asks deputies to bring Satterly back into the courtroom.

    “Is there something that you wish to say to me?” the judge asks.

    Satterly argues that he had directed the slur at his brother, not the judge.

    “No, no, no, I didn’t mean it like that,” the defendant insists.

    “Oh, you didn’t mean it like that?” Stevens replies skeptically. “You don’t speak those words in here. And that word particularly, you don’t use that word.”

    “I’m going to give you 60 days for having used that word. I’m going to hold you in contempt right now for having used it in this courtroom. It’s disrespectful; don’t ever do it again.”

    Workplace diversity policies ‘don’t help’ — and ‘make white men feel threatened’

    Whether it’s Silicon Valley giants such as Facebook or relatively unknown firms such as Camden Property Trust, Fortune’s No. 1 “Best Workplace for Diversity” last year, businesses around the world are scrambling to show they know it’s not okay to let white men run everything. That effort can take many forms — from diversity training so devastatingly lampooned years ago in “The Office” to, you know, actually hiring and retaining minorities and women.

    A controversial piece published Monday in the Harvard Business Review now asks a simple question: “Are all of these efforts working?” For anyone who thinks diversity at work is important, the answer was a bit distressing.

    “In terms of increasing demographic diversity, the answer appears to be not really,” the piece, written by Tessa L. Dover, Cheryl R. Kaiser and Brenda Major, read. “The most commonly used diversity programs do little to increase representation of minorities and women.”

    That wasn’t the end of the bad news. The three co-authors — two professors and a PhD candidate who study diversity — concluded that diversity policies can blind white men to racism and sexism at work and also lead to resentment.

    “We found evidence that it not only makes white men believe that women and minorities are being treated fairly — whether that’s true or not — it also makes them more likely to believe that they themselves are being treated unfairly,”the piece read.

    Just finished watching PBO’s speech about his executive orders on background checks for buying guns. Anyone with a shred of a conscience or compassion must have been brought to tears. I have always felt that all of his visits to the places where the massacres occurred, comforting the families and the communities must really be wearing him down. What a sad mission for a president, to have to do this over and over and remain composed and rational.

    Rams, Chargers, Raiders apply for L.A. relocation
    Published: Jan. 4, 2016 at 10:55 p.m. Updated: Jan. 4, 2016 at 11:45 p.m.

    As expected, the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have submitted applications for relocation to Los Angeles.

    Monday was the first day the organizations were eligible to petition the league, as required by the NFL Policy and Procedures for Proposed Franchise Relocations.

    The NFL released the following statement:

    “The applications will be reviewed this week by league staff and three league committees that will meet in New York on Wednesday and Thursday — the Los Angeles Opportunities, Stadium, and Finance committees. The applications will be presented for consideration at next week’s league meeting in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday. The relocation of a franchise requires the affirmative vote of three-quarters of the NFL clubs (24 of 32).”

    The Chargers released a statement of their own, outlining the reasons for this action:

    “We have tried for more than 14 years, through nine separate proposals and seven different mayors, to create a world-class stadium experience for fans in San Diego. Despite these efforts, there is still no certain, actionable solution to the stadium problem. We are sad to have reached this point.”

    The Rams’ statement was more elemental:

    “The St. Louis Rams informed the National Football League today that the Rams propose to relocate to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The relocation would be effective for the 2016 NFL League Year.”

    The Raiders were the last to release a statement:

    “In accordance with the relocation policies, the Oakland Raiders submitted a relocation package to the NFL. The matter is now in the hands of the NFL’s owners. An owners’ meeting is scheduled to take place in Houston, Texas on January 12 and 13, 2016.”

    Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, said while campaigning in Iowa on Monday that he had no knowledge about a standoff in eastern Oregonwhere armed anti-government protesters have taken over a federal wildlife refuge.

    The Oregon protest, which began Saturday night, has attracted national news headlines on radio, TV, newspapers and from Internet sources. But Kasich — a former U.S. congressman — repeatedly told a reporter from The Des Moines Register on Monday that he didn’t know anything about it. Then Kasich excused himself and headed outside to his vehicle.

    Kasich’s profession of no knowledge about the situation was unexpected because presidential candidates who visit Iowa are routinely quizzed at length about current events and policy issues while on the campaign trail. His response to the question about the incident involving federal property in Oregon came just after he finished a campaign appearance before more than 100 people at a coffee shop in West Des Moines’ historic Valley Junction business district. During his remarks to the audience, he talked at length about how he would respond in a tough manner against ISIS terrorists if he were elected to the White House.

    Kasich campaign spokesman Rob Nichols emailed The Des Moines Register about four hours after the event in West Des Moines with an update: “He’s aware of the issue. This was an error in staff briefing,” Nichols said.

    Marco Rubio gave a speech on national security in New Hampshire yesterday, and made a point to single out concerns about the so-called USA Freedom Act.

    “If ISIS had lobbyists in Washington, they would have spent millions to support the anti-intelligence law that was just passed with the help of some Republicans now running for president,” the Florida senator said, making a not-so-subtle reference to Ted Cruz’s support for legislation that limited federal surveillance programs.

    The trouble, of course, is that Cruz wasn’t alone. As we discussed a couple of months ago, the bill passed the Senate with a bipartisan 67-vote majority, and passed the GOP-led House, 338 to 88. It was backed by members of the Republican leadership in both chambers, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.

    More to the point, many of Rubio’s most important congressional allies supported the same legislation. The Daily Beast published a great catch late last week:

    There Are No Better Alternatives to Trump

    Byron York talks to right-wing billionaires to try to ascertain why they aren’t coordinating to take Donald Trump down. He comes up with five categories of explanation:

    First, creating an organization and spending millions of dollars to carpet-bomb Trump with negative ads in key states isn’t easy; there aren’t many people who could pull it off. Second, some donors think an anti-Trump offensive not only would not work but would backfire on an already unpopular GOP establishment. Third, some who do believe it could work think it should not be attempted until Trump’s critics have agreed on an alternative candidate — which they haven’t. Fourth, the anti-Trump opposition can’t decide who should lead such an effort. And fifth, most GOP strategists and money movers continue to believe Trump will ultimately fail on his own, that in the end he will not be the Republican nominee.

    I think we can safely ignore the first and fifth answers because they’re basically unresponsive. On the first, the premise of the question is that these billionaires could pull off a carpet-bombing of Trump but simply aren’t doing so. On the last, if a carpet-bombing is unnecessary, then what are we even debating?

    The real explanation can be found in the second, third and fourth points. I am going to discuss them out of order.

    The single biggest problem is that there are no acceptable alternatives to Trump. Jeb was supposed to be their guy but he just can’t get any traction. Scott Walker and Rick Perry have already dropped out. Ben Carson’s campaign is in free-fall. Chris Chistie was once a hot commodity with the billionaires, but the closing of the George Washington Bridge put an end to that romance. Marco Rubio has his Miami Vice problem, and if there is one thing that Jeb campaign has been largely successful at in this campaign, it has been warning big donors about the skeletons in Rubio’s closet. Other than Ted Cruz, that leaves no one with the finances, polling numbers, and potential to win that billionaires need to see before they get invested.
