HERE’S PROOF THAT THE PRESS WON’T LET DONALD TRUMP DESTROY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
    January 11, 2016

There’s a widespread belief that Democrats are likely to win this year’s presidential election no matter what, and that the GOP is utterly doomed if Donald Trump is the nominee. I don’t share that belief — but even if it’s accurate, even if a Trump-Clinton or Trump-Sanders race ends in a Democratic landslide, I can guarantee you that the GOP will recover from the Trump campaign almost instantly.

How? The press will do what it always does when Republicans stumble: It will give the GOP a do-over.

Don’t believe me? Go to Politico today and read about Paul Ryan, who’s positioning himself to be the face of that do-over:

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Paul Ryan talked about the ills of the criminal-justice system. He quizzed GOP presidential hopefuls at a forum here about what they’ve done to help the impoverished and vowed that Republicans, if they put their minds to it, could “make breakthroughs” in the war on poverty.

This is what Ryan wants his Republican Party to look like. But it bears little resemblance to the one on display in the presidential primary, a battle that some senior Republicans say has gotten so coarse that it’s putting their congressional majorities at risk.

So as Ryan tries to reassert the party’s substantive side with a series of policy rollouts in the coming months — a conservative replacement to Obamacare, tax reform, a criminal justice bill — he’s also looking to give the House GOP its own identity.

    The Battle for the South
In an article suggesting that Donald Trump’s support is more broad than is usually reported, Scott Bland noted this:
In the Civis’ model, Trump runs ahead of his 33-percent national average in 30 of the 40 districts where Kerry matched or exceeded Obama’s performance, even though Obama ran about 5 points ahead of Kerry nationally.
Those districts are largely contained in a band running through Appalachia, from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, and then across the Deep South to Arkansas and Oklahoma. Once Democratic strongholds, voters there have sloughed off the party in recent decades — a trend that accelerated rapidly under Obama. Now, Trump is giving a voice to some of their protectionist concerns about immigration and trade.
I often find this kind of reporting to be fascinating in that Bland makes no mention of the fact that this area of the country started to “slough off” the Democratic Party right after President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and Republicans initiated their Southern Strategy. And yet he implies that the acceleration of that change at the election of our first African American president has to do with their “protectionist concerns about immigration and trade.” To the extent these areas voted in greater numbers for John Kerry than they did Barack Obama, does anyone think that is because of protectionism? Why can’t reporters admit that racism is at least part of the mix? If I were into leveling charges of “political correctness,” this is where it actually applies.

    Heck of a job, Governor

    Detroit Free Press Editorial Board

    12:09 a.m. EST January 10, 2016

Think of the shameful federal response to Hurricane Katrina, where the same lack of urgency delayed life-saving aid.

Governor Snyder: When are you going to turn your relentless, positive action toward assuaging the misery your administration has heaped upon the people of Flint?

Right now, the State of Michigan should be able to say that it has ensured the delivery of bottled water and water filters to every Flint resident whose drinking water has been contaminated by lead. Right now, the State of Michigan should be able to say it has taken the first steps to craft nutritional and educational interventions for lead-poisoned Flint kids. Right now, the State of Michigan should be able to say it is using funds made available by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to replace aging lead water service lines in Flint.

Instead, the governor is offering placid responses and slow-walking important remedies, while the investigation into how one of Michigan’s greatest man-made public health crises unfolded comes up with explanations in dribs and drabs.

    How to help Flint, Michigan
    01/08/16 06:39 PM—UPDATED 01/10/16 11:59 PM

Since we started covering the crisis in Flint, Michigan, where the drinking water has been poisoned with lead, we have received many calls from our viewers about how they can help.

The situation on the ground now is that many people still do not have filters to protect themselves from lead in their tap water. As we reported last night, there is no government-run program for giving bottled water to people who cannot afford to buy it. If you need water in Flint right now, your best choice is turning to one of the local nonprofits that are giving it away. At this point, those nonprofits are running solely on donations.
And that is where you come in. We talked to several of these Flint nonprofits today, and they broke it down for us like this:

    1) If you have a truck full of water, you can take it directly to The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which is serving as a central distribution point.

    2) If you have a case of water, you can take it to one of three soup kitchens run by Catholic Charities:

Center for Hope, 901 Chippewa Street, Flint, MI 48503

North End Soup Kitchen 735 E. Stewart Ave, Flint, MI 48505

Owosso Community Closet and Food Pantry 120 W. Exchange St., Ste. 300 Owosso, MI 48867

Catholic Charities also accepts donations online.

Michigan’s Snyder facing nation’s most serious scandal
    01/11/16 08:00 AM—UPDATED 01/11/16 01:04 PM
    By Steve Benen

As regular viewers know, The Rachel Maddow Show has devoted a great deal of time to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, but if you haven’t been focused on this scandal yet, it’s important to get up to speed.

Over the weekend, for example, the editorial board of the Detroit Free Press turned its attention directly to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R), who’s facing calls for his arrest from protestors, comparing his handling of the Flint crisis to George W. Bush’s handling of Hurricane Katrina.
Right now, the State of Michigan should be able to say that it has ensured the delivery of bottled water and water filters to every Flint resident whose drinking water has been contaminated by lead…. Instead, the governor is offering placid responses and slow-walking important remedies, while the investigation into how one of Michigan’s greatest man-made public health crises unfolded comes up with explanations in dribs and drabs.

It’s not just derelict – it invokes inglorious comparison to other callous and insensitive official responses to tragedy. Think of the shameful federal response to Hurricane Katrina, where the same lack of urgency delayed life-saving aid. The poverty rate in Flint is 40%; 52% of Flint residents are African-American. And so we are prompted to ask: How would the state have responded to a crisis of such proportions in a community with more wealth and power?
Of course, there’s a key, heartbreaking difference between recent developments in Flint and the crisis in New Orleans in 2005: Katrina was a natural disaster; Flint’s disaster was the result of public officials showing breathtakingly bad judgment.

Let’s recap how we reached this point.

That endlessly nagging concept of the inferior and unattractive race that’s been fed and absorbed…the unfortunate and constant manifestation of that subconscious long-term impact/damage of slavery and colonization..that’s seeped into, and lodged firmly in the black psyche…

Only a black man…black folk…would consider their own…one of their very best – a strikingly gorgeous, sexy, model tall, fit, well-kept, principled, did-everything-right, lived-her-life-right, double Ivy League educated black First Lady…’regular’…’regular’…Regular?

All while the world unapologetically force-feeds, celebrates and declares as unequivocally ‘beautiful’..’pretty’…’exceptional…’aspirational’, their idea of the ‘universal standard of beauty’ – as seen through the white prism…a near anorexic, ‘former’ drug-abusing, self-mutilating, high school drop-out (Angelina Jolie), a plain, ho-hum ‘commoner’ turned ‘princess’ by marriage (Kate Middleton) – and even as the deciders appear to embrace political correctness and attempt to slightly ‘diversify’ to include darker shades of their own choosing…they settle on and elevate what they view as ‘other’ – no matter how otherwise unremarkable, and only considerably improved in their estimation by the injection of white blood and white genes (Halle Berry) …or what they patronizingly term ‘exotic’…Lupita N’yongo…

Isn’t it interesting how nobody – and especially not Chinese-Americans, or Asians in general – ever consciously or unconsciously trivialized or provided fodder for those who would pounce on any opportunity to freely trash, insult or in any way demean or deem Mark Zuckerberg’s wife of just a few years (3 years to be exact), Priscilla Chan as ‘regular’…or insinuate that she was nothing special – or put down her looks…Priscilla gets to freely enjoy fully-respected and untouchable wife status without any allusions ever to her looks – or to anything that even remotely diminishes or caricatures her – or leaves her open to mockery, insult or attack…

While we’re at it, isn’t it interesting that every effort is made to assign young Priscilla Chan her rightful place as Mark Zuckerberg’s wife without question, thought or prompting..? When Mark makes a donation, it’s respectfully and enthusiastically received and reported as from both him and her…Priscilla gets to fully occupy and enjoy and be fully acknowledged in that sacred place as Mark Zuckerberg’s wife and equal partner after just 3 years of marriage – and nobody bitches about it – or find excuses or ways to diminish or deny her any of it…Yet our First Lady, a wife of 23 years and counting, is begrudged even that…

Until black people learn to stop arming those who wish to hurt and demean black people – especially black women…and learn instead how to rally and elevate our own, the world will continue to belittle and stomp on all of us…We’ve not only stood idly by, but some have actively enabled, contributed to and emboldened the maligning and demeaning of a perfectly gorgeous, appealing, extraordinary, whip-smart woman, wife, mother, First Lady…The nonstop ‘Mooch, sasquatch, tranny, ugly’ attacks on her have only been fueled and made worse with flippant talk like this ‘regular’ black woman rubbish …

“..To control a people you must first control what they think about themselves and how they regard their history and culture. And when your conqueror makes you ashamed of your culture and your history, he needs no prison walls and no chains to hold you…”

Latest polls send shudders through Republican establishment
    01/11/16 08:40 AM
    By Steve Benen

The Iowa caucuses are just three weeks from today, and the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll, released over the weekend, offers little hope to the Republican establishment, waiting for its presidential nominating race to change. Here are the latest preferences from Hawkeye State Republicans:

    1. Ted Cruz: 28%
    2. Donald Trump: 24%
    3. Marco Rubio: 13%
    4. Ben Carson: 11%

The remaining candidates are each at 5% or lower. The results are very similar to the findings from the latest Fox News poll, released late Friday, which found Cruz leading Trump in Iowa, 27% to 23%, followed by Rubio at 15%.

To be sure, conditions can change over the course of three weeks – the GOP candidates will participate in two more debates between now and Feb. 1 – but the polling in Iowa has been fairly steady since early December, and Republican insiders eager to see Cruz and/or Trump falter have reason to feel anxious. Indeed, both major polls show the top two with at least 50% of the vote.

The picture in New Hampshire is noticably different:

    1. Donald Trump: 30%
    2. Marco Rubio: 14%
    3. Chris Christie: 12%
    4. Ted Cruz: 10%
    5. Jeb Bush: 9%
    5. John Kasich: 9%

As with Iowa, the remaining candidates are each at 5% or lower.

    Juan Williams: Angry white women

By Juan Williams – 01/11/16 06:00 AM EST
Who knew white women had become so angry?

The anger animating the divide between the GOP establishment and the GOP grassroots is always presented in terms of angry white men.

It is impossible to ignore, as The Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin noted last week, that Republican media and political culture these days, both in Congress and on the campaign trail, is “perpetually angry.”
But a new poll shows that white women are the angriest of angry voters.

The NBC News/Esquire magazine poll, conducted with Survey Monkey, found 54 percent of white Americans have been getting angrier over current events during the past year.

That is far higher than the 43 percent of Latinos and 33 percent of black Americans who say the last year of political, economic and cultural events have left them feeling angry. In fact, 73 percent of whites (compared to 66 percent of Hispanics and 56 percent of blacks) say they get angry “at least once per day.”

And the angriest white people are white women.

Fifty-eight percent of white women say they are angrier right now than a year ago. Only 51 percent of white men say the same thing, as do just 44 percent of non-white women and 32 percent of non-white men.
