    Luvvie!!! #TeamPetty

Why I hope Pres. Obama goes full #TeamPetty in his final SOTU speech

When President Barack Obama began his second term, I was excited because he was officially on lame duck status, and that meant he could take more risks. He could be bolder, and he could give the absolute minimum about people’s feelings.

Being the first black president of the United States of America ain’t been no crystal stair for him, and he has faced more death threats than any other president ever, a record level of hateration from the public and complete disrespect from the people who should honor the office the most: Congress.

So the fact that Michelle’s husband still has ANY decorum and behavior left is a testament to his upstanding character, and to a high level of patience. Even the biblical Job is like “you’ve done good.” However, in this last year, we’ve come to see that everyone has a limit, because Barack has had a good number of “f*ck your feelings” moments, and I’ve been so proud. From last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he says he now has a list that rhymes with “bucket,” to talking about how folks keep “popping off” to basically calling the Republicans immature.

I need Petty Barack to come out ALL THE WAY, and tonight’s State of the Union address might be that opportunity. It is his last SOTU, so he has to make it count. He knows that, too, because the official publicity photo for the address is of President Obama in an untied tie, with his mouth in the air looking like he’s saying “COME AT ME, BRO.” I think it might be safe to say that he’s going to leave a couple of dambs (yes, with a B) on that stage, making sure he has none left to give.

First of all, I want our President to be unapologetically black on that stage. He should walk in as Kendrick Lamar performs, since they’re besties now, and he had him come to the White House for a private meeting in December. Kendrick gotta make sure his cornrows are freshly done though, and we won’t even mind that they don’t touch his neck. We’ll just pray and hope they don’t stay that same length for years, like that dude Brian from Day 26.

Oregon Sheriff Accuses Armed Protesters of Intimidation, Harassment
    by TIM STELLOH

Local law enforcement is accusing armed protesters who seized an Oregon wildlife refuge of harassment and intimidation.

In a statement Monday, Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward described an “uptick” in reports of “law enforcement officers and community members being followed home; of people sitting in cars outside their homes, observing their movements and those of their families; and of people following them and their families as they move around the community.”

Ward added, “While not direct physical threats, these activities are clearly designed to try to intimidate.”

Federal employees of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the site occupied by the protestors, also reported “a number of uncomfortable instances” of “unknown” outsiders idling outside their homes, watching them and initiating debates about their employment.

Obama gives military largest raise in 5 years, GOP refuses to give credit

President Obama’s pay raise for the military is set to go into effect at the end of the week. Despite being the largest increase in five years, Republicans have refused to give credit where credit is due.

As the summer came to a close, Obama ordered an “across the board” pay increase for federal workers, with special attention being paid to those in the military. All federal civilian workers will receive an increase of one percent, while members of the military will get an increase of 1.3 percent. Over the last two years, the military increase was at one percent, while a pay freeze was in effect during 2011-2013. In addition to the raise, the recently signed National Defense Authorization Act has improved the way members of the military can access retirement benefits, as reported by the Chicago Tribune on Dec. 28.

As the Federal Times pointed out, Democrats in the House and Senate had originally proposed a 3.8 percent increase for federal workers, but the proposal died in the Republican controlled House. While pay for members of the military increases depending on length of service and rank, PayScale.com notes that the average salary for a solider is just over $40,000 a year, a number that most people agree is too low…\\\

    About the Film
No Más Bebés tells the story of a little-known but landmark event in reproductive justice, when a small group of Mexican immigrant women sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Rand Paul: Obama Should Say He’s A Failure, Then Resign In State Of The Union

“Well, I think from President Obama’s perspective, the best thing he could do would be to leave office early.”

    posted on Jan. 12, 2016, at 10:51 a.m.

Rand Paul says he’d like to see President Obama announce in the State of the Union that he’s a failure and then resign.

“Well, I think from President Obama’s perspective, the best thing he could do would be to leave office early,” the Kentucky senator and Republican presidential candidate said on Good Morning with Dan Mitchell. “I wish that tonight he would announce, ‘hey guys, I’ve really been a failure as a president over the last seven years and I’m gonna take off early so cause I want to go play golf.’

“I really think Obama has got it all wrong about economy,” Paul added, more substantively, saying Obama likes deficits and market intervention.

“It would be nice if he could own up to that, but his world view is that government is the answer,” said Paul.

Paul, who was recently knocked out of the main Republican presidential debate due to low poll numbers, also addressed his boycott of participation in any so-called undercard debate.

There’s still time for the race for the Republican nomination to change, but as early January gives way to mid-January, some observations are starting to look more reliable.

For example, Donald Trump is well positioned to win the New Hampshire primary. The latest Monmouth poll was released yesterday:

    1. Donald Trump: 32% (up from 26% in a Monmouth poll in November)
    2. Ted Cruz: 14% (up from 9%)
    2. John Kasich: 14% (up from 11%)
    4. Marco Rubio: 12% (down from 13%)
    5. Chris Christie: 8% (up from 5%)

Two Southern states point in two different directions

When the Affordable Care Act was taking shape several years ago, one of its more popular provisions was the creation of state-based exchange marketplaces. By now, most Americans are probably familiar with the concept: states would create marketplaces for insurers to compete for the public’s business, and consumers could choose the best plan for their needs.

Kentucky, previously a national leader in ACA implementation, embraced the idea with great enthusiasm, creating the Kynect system, which proved to be a great success. Newly elected Gov. Matt Bevin (R), however, is dismantling it anyway. The Louisville Courier-Journal reported yesterday (via Charles Gaba):

Following through on a campaign pledge, Gov. Matt Bevin has notified federal authorities he plans to dismantle kynect, Kentucky’s health insurance exchange created under the Affordable Care Act. […]

    ………………………………………………………………..

But there’s also an under-appreciated irony to this: Bevin, the far-right Republican governor, is also abandoning the tenets of his own ideology. By scrapping Kynect, the Tea Party Kentuckian is shifting power from his state to Washington, D.C., on purpose, without explanation.

A few states away, in Louisiana, we see a state government pointed in a more constructive direction.

Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) was sworn in yesterday’s as the Pelican State’s new chief executive, and he quickly turned his attention to Medicaid expansion through the ACA. Reuters reported:
Edwards, the first Democrat to hold the office of governor in Louisiana since 2008, said he planned to begin accepting federal funding on Tuesday to expand healthcare to residents through the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

“Your tax dollars should not be going to one of the 30 other states that have expanded Medicaid when we are one of the states that expansion will help the most,” Edwards, 49, said during the address.

About an hour after being sworn in, the new Democratic governor published a tweet about his priorities: “Tomorrow I am going to accept the federal funding to expand Medicaid so working families in [Louisiana] can access healthcare.”

    It’s a classic elections-have-consequences moment.
