t’s really time for Governor Rick Snyder to go. It’s impossible to imagine him continuing to do his job if the e-mails yet to come about the poisoning of the city of Flint reflect as badly on his administration as today’s batch do. Therein we find negligence, incompetence, buck-passing ,and ass-covering in the extreme. It’s plain that political considerations were paramount when the news of what had happened in Flint first reached Lansing.
In the e-mails, Muchmore wrote that U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, was “engaged in his normal press hound routine” after the congressman issued a press release noting he’d asked the EPA to help the state deal with the crisis. Muchmore added that then-mayor Dayne Walling “went out on a CYA effort due to the election.” They also show doubts about returning Flint to the Detroit system and even questioning if the reports of higher lead levels are accurate. “They can’t reconnect to DWSD even if they wanted to as they sold the connector line,” Muchmore wrote Sept. 26. “And, especially with the new rate increases in Detroit, their citizens would be less able to pay than they already are. Now we have the anti everything group turning to the lead content which is a concern for everyone, but DEQ and DHHS and EPA can’t find evidence of a major change per Geralyn’s memo below.”
Later, of course, under the expanded emergency-manager law that was a pet project of Snyder’s from the time he was inaugurated, Mayor Walling was replaced by an “emergency manager”—the city has had four of them since Snyder expanded the law—under whom the switch from the DWSD to the Flint River was completed. By the time the crisis was brewing underground, the elected local officials of the city of Flint had virtually no power at all. It’s hard to imagine that this crisis would have come to the point to which it has come if the people responsible for it actually had to face the voters. At the very least, Snyder may have to have a chat with Congress about the whole thing.

What is happening in Flint, Michigan right now is systemic genocide, and the victims are people of color and poor people. The city’s population is 60% Black and 42% of the residents live below the poverty line. They are being poisoned with lead-tainted water that is coming out of their faucets, and it is from the willful neglect of those charged with running the city and the governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder.
Long story short (TL:DR): Governor Snyder wanted to save money, so he decided to stop having Detroit water be the supplier for tap water in Flint. Instead, he felt that the very polluted Flint River would be good enough for the residents, in spite of the fact that the water is so full of lead, if you reach into it, you’d pull out a box of number 2 pencils. And probably a scantron attached for good measure. That was in 2014.

The 274 pages of emails released by Gov. Rick Snyder this week on Flint’s water crisis included no discussion of race. Instead, they focused on costs relating to the city’s water supply, questions about scientific data showing lead contamination and uncertainty about the responsibilities of state and local health officials.
But it is indisputable that in Flint, the majority of residents are black and many are poor. So whether or not race and class were factors in the state’s agonizingly slow and often antagonistic response, the result was the same: Thousands of Flint’s residents, black and white, have been exposed to lead in their drinking water. And the long-term health effects of that poisoning may not be fully understood for years.

Why some Michigan politicians say the Flint water crisis is a hoax

Even as authorities are still advising residents in Flint, Mich., not to drink or bathe in city’s tap water, leaving thousands to rely on bottled water to survive, some of the state’s prominent political voices think Flint’s water crisis may be exaggerated.
Foremost among them is Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson (R), who voiced skepticism about the severity of the crisis during an appearance before the Detroit Economic Club luncheon Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press.
“I don’t think we should say or use words anymore like Flint’s been poisoned,” Patterson told reporters, according to Fox affiliate WJBK. “Because I don’t think that’s accurate.”

Despite what many see as definitive evidence of a crisis, Patterson told the station he changed his mind after hearing a radio interview with Bill Ballenger, a well-known Republican political analyst, former state lawmaker and Flint resident, who said he was offering “the other side” of the story.
“Let’s wait and see what the facts show,” Patterson urged.
In the interview cited by Patterson, Ballenger said his own blood tests hadn’t revealed elevated levels of lead and he wondered whether the crisis was a hoax, according to the Free Press. He argued that the crisis was instead perpetuated by politicians and members of the media “with an ax to grind.”
“I’ve been using words like, ‘Flint’s been poisoned’ and I won’t use that anymore because I think the jury is out,” he added.
According to the World Health Organization, “lead affects children’s brain development resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioral changes such as shortening of attention span and increased antisocial behavior, and reduced educational attainment. Lead exposure also causes anemia, hypertension, renal impairment, immunotoxicity and toxicity to the reproductive organs. The neurological and behavioral effects of lead are believed to be irreversible.”

LANSING, Mich. — A top aide to Michigan’s governor referred to people raising questions about the quality of Flint’s water as an “anti-everything group.” Other critics were accused of turning complaints about water into a “political football.” And worrisome findings about lead by a concerned pediatrician were dismissed as “data,” in quotes.
That view of how the administration of Gov. Rick Snyder initially dealt with the water crisis in the poverty-stricken, black-majority city of Flint emerged from 274 pages of emails, made public by the governor on Wednesday.
The correspondence records mounting complaints by the public and elected officials, as well as growing irritation by state officials over the reluctance to accept their assurances.
It was not until late in 2015, after months of complaints, that state officials finally conceded what critics had been contending: that Flint was in the midst of a major public health emergency, as tap water pouring into families’ homes contained enough lead to show up in the blood of dozens of people in the city. Even small amounts of lead could cause lasting health and developmental problems in children.

only micro-fact check I would make on the governor`s remarks is when he
said government failed you, federal, state and local leaders by breaking
the trust. In this case, local leaders were not at fault. Local leaders
had been replaced in Flint by the people who reported only to the governor.
They used the emergency management statute in Michigan to replace local
leaders with emergency managers who reported to Rick Snyder and those are
the people who made the decision that resulted in the poisoning. That is
how this started.

Lessenberry: More questions than answers in Snyder’s State of the State address

This Week in Michigan Politics, Jack Lessenberry talks with Morning Edition host Emily Fox about what will happen in Flint and politics, now that Gov. Rick Snyder has given his long-awaited State of the State address.
The Flint water crisis was the first order of business in Gov. Rick Snyder’s address last night. He apologized to the residents of Flint and then said he would release all of his e-mails related to the crisis.
He also asked the Legislature to approve $28 million for Flint, to help with the short and long-term issues with the water crisis. Does Lessenberry think all of this is going to ease the outrage we’ve been seeing on this issue?
“It certainly won’t go away,” he says. “Of course, we don’t know for sure if the Legislature will approve all this, although it seems likely they will. But we don’t know how severe the effect of the brain damage to the children with lead poisoning is going to be.
“There’s the whole issue about what the governor knew and when he knew it, and why weren’t actions taken earlier,” Lessenberry says. “The attorney general, who has ambitions to run for governor has launched an investigation, and people are going to be centering, I think, on the fact that the governor took no action for a long, long time. This is not going to end anytime soon.”
During his speech, Gov. Snyder tried to lay out his timeline of what he knew and when, and he talked about the Department of Environmental Quality’s role in the crisis, how the DEQ kept saying the water quality was fine, despite signs and studies that it wasn’t.
The DEQ also seemed to cover up the issue by dropping two of the highest lead samples from its report, and that report eventually showed that Flint’s water was fine, when it wasn’t. Snyder says there will be new leadership in the DEQ and he will hold individuals accountable, but what do Lessenberry think that will look like?
“I don’t know what that will look like,” he says. “There’s an interim director there now. What we don’t know is why the governor was so lethargic to begin with.
“Indeed, there are a lot of people raising questions about the DEQ, including the federal EPA. And the governor seemed curiously deaf to all of this, and didn’t seem to ask for any answers, until it was really thrown in his face at the end of December. So is the DEQ going to have more oversight, are there going to be procedures in place, accountability and transparency? A lot of questions have yet to be answered.”
There were other things that Gov. Snyder talked about in his State of the State address last night. He talked about infrastructure needing to be improved and Detroit Public Schools. Was there anything else in the address that stuck out to Lessenberry?
“He’s got a couple of additional problems,” Lessenberry says. “One is that the Legislature is dominated by Tea Party interests, people who don’t really want to raise taxes for anything.

For Gov Rick Snyder there are only two possibilities:
1.) He is as guilty as the devil, but believes he can lie his way out of this.
2.) He is felony stupid and incompetent beyond human comprehension. If this were the case, he shouldn’t be running a dog fight much less an entire state.
