Alan Rickman, Watchable Villain in ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Die Hard,’ Dies at 69

JAN. 14, 2016Alan Rickman, the accomplished British stage actor who brought an erudite dignity to film roles like Hans Gruber, the nefarious mastermind of “Die Hard,” and Severus Snape, the dour master of potions in the “Harry Potter” series, died on Thursday in London. He was 69.
His death was confirmed by a publicist, Catherine Olim, who said the cause was cancer.
In an acting career of more than 40 years, Mr. Rickman, with his sensuous, shadowy purr of a voice and often an enigmatic grin, played a panoply of characters whose outward villainy often concealed more complicated emotions and motivations.
Mr. Rickman, who attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, had his early successes in stage works like the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1985 production of Christopher Hampton’s “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” in which, in a leading role, he played the manipulative Vicomte de Valmont. He earned a Tony Award nomination for the performance after the production transferred to Broadway in 1987.
Mr. Rickman gained a worldwide audience the following year in “Die Hard,” the first of the Hollywood action-thriller franchise, playing Gruber, the devious, well-spoken terrorist whose takeover of the fictional Nakatomi Plaza building in Los Angeles is foiled by the resourceful police officer John McClane, played by Bruce Willis.
Mr. Rickman wrung every malevolent drop that he could from Gruber’s boastful lines. (“Who are you?” he asks McClane, who is constantly frustrating his plans. “Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he’s John Wayne?”)
Some 13 years later, Mr. Rickman brought nuance to the role of Severus Snape, a sarcastic, cutting instructor at the Hogwarts school in the “Harry Potter” franchise, adapted from J. K. Rowling’s best-selling novels. The character was introduced on screen in the 2001 film “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
Professor Snape seemed at first to be a traditional foil for the titular protagonist, but through Mr. Rickman’s increasingly intricate performances over eight films, he would be revealed as having had a more crucial and courageous role in the young hero’s life.
Mr. Rickman saw the mysterious Professor Snape as an unusually complex character, he said in an interview with The New York Times in 2012, and he signed on without a clear idea of how the character would evolve over the course of the series, which ended with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2.”

“…Last year, Hillary handed over 55,000 pages of emails that she generated during her four years as Secretary of State (her address: hdr22@clintonemail.com). As anyone who follows the news at all knows, she sent them over a private server which was stored in a bathroom closet in a house in Denver. That server is now in the hands of the FBI.
But the former secretary of state benefits from the oft-forgotten fact, the gaping caveat in all this: Hillary took it upon herself to destroy some 32,000 emails that she deemed private—mentioning specifically Chelsea’s wedding, her mother’s funeral, her own yoga class schedule. She made the decision and, unless the FBI investigation yields a backup, Americans will never know if the real juice was to be found in those deleted messages.
Given what we have to work with, and having spent many hours reading these emails, from past dumps and from this most recent, I kept coming back to a disconcerting thought. The emails don’t sound like the electronic record of the world’s top diplomat. I had to keep reminding myself that Secretary Clinton was first among equals worldwide, that she traveled the globe—as she often reminded us, mentioning precisely how many miles she had traversed—that she took the measure of world leaders, mostly men, that she was charged with handling hotspots, with issuing decrees and decisions, with being tough-minded, even fearless.
And yet “banal” is the best word to describe many of these emails that contain Hillary’s terse but even-tempered and polite responses to the hovering staffers who surrounded, supported, and protected her.
An outsized share of emails were from staffers to Hillary forwarding stories that seemed aimed at boosting her mood or confidence. On December 27, 2010, Cheryl Mills, Hillary’s chief of staff at the state department and Bill’s chief defense lawyer during impeachment, emailed the boss a Gallup survey showing her again the “most admired woman,” out ranking Sarah Palin, Oprah, Michelle, Condi Rice, even Queen Elizabeth. “Clinton approval soars” headlined another forwarded story.
So many of the emails had stories attached showing Hillary’s approval rating higher than Obama’s (75 to 51) that a pattern quickly emerged. Here’s a news story sent to Hillary from Chicago native, Sidney Blumenthal: “A new poll of avid news watchers shows that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a much higher approval rating than the man she once campaigned against and now works for, President Barack Obama.”
Some emails carried stories showing the rookie mistakes of a first-term president who entered the White House with too thin a resume. Chicago native John Podesta, now heading Hillary’s campaign for president, commented on an email with the subject line, “New Poll: Approval Ratings for Administration Officials Drop Across the Board.”
“Break out the Kevlar [bullet proof] vests,” Podesta wrote.
One can’t read too many of these without realizing that a good day for Hillary Clinton and her loyalists was a day when things were going south for Barack Obama, the man who, in 2008, denied Hillary what so many close to her considered to be rightfully hers: the presidency.

One thing that I find very interesting is the comparison between John Kerry and Hillary Clinton as SoS. I’m hard pressed to remember what Hillary actually accomplished, but she seems to have no problem taking credit for the subsequent accomplishments of others. Of course, that is nothing new for her.
The best case scenario that I think is remotely possible would be if Bernie Sanders won the nomination and chose a running mate who would run in 2020. Bernie would most likely be a one term president given his age. And that could be a huge advantage. If we face reality, the House is still going to be dominated by Republicans, and the Senate may still be as well. There is no hope for the Democrats to legislate again until at least 2019 if they can take back the House and the Senate in the 2018 midterm elections. So, in my opinion, Bernie is the best choice to keep a lid on the craziness, to not lose ground, and do the best he can to move us forward if and when the opportunities present themselves.
As for Hillary, we have no reason to think that her presidency would be any better than when she was a governor’s wife, a president’s wife, a US Senator, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, or the Secretary of State. What could change?

Bruce Rauner has been Illinois’ governor for one year now, and I would defy you to name one thing off the top of your head that he has accomplished during that time.
There actually are a few things, I would hasten to add, but I’ll bet most of you couldn’t name them because Rauner has made his hallmark what he hasn’t been able to accomplish — which is most everything he named as a priority.

Would he be a pragmatic businessman eager to cut deals with Democrats to put his imprimatur on an Illinois economic recovery, or would he be a confrontational ideologue looking to leverage the state’s extensive problems to promote his political vision?
We now know it’s the latter, and I realize a lot of Illinois voters who share his vision are fine with that, although I’m also sure they are fewer in number than when he was elected.
When Rauner won, I feared for the worst and hoped for the best, because to root against Rauner is to root against Illinois, whose problems are undeniable.
Unfortunately, Rauner has turned out to be a far greater disaster as governor than I’d even imagined.

Brown: The man who wants to replace Mike Madigan

Jason Gonzales, who expects to mount the first serious election challenge to House Speaker Michael J. Madigan in maybe forever, has no sign on his storefront campaign office.
Gonzales, a 41-year-old business consultant who spent his last three years picking up master’s degrees from both MIT and Harvard, says the low profile is by design.

But that was before state Republicans led by Gov. Bruce Rauner focused the blame on Madigan as the central cause of everything wrong with Illinois.
Removing Madigan from power has since become a rallying cry for many voters around the state.
Into that opportunity steps Gonzales, a political newcomer. He didn’t live in Madigan’s 22ndHouse district before deciding to explore a campaign against him in 2014 and makes no bones about expecting to receive much of his financial support from Republicans and Rauner supporters. They’ve already supplied the bulk of the $45,840 he’s reported so far.

Gonzales, born in Elgin, grew up in Carpentersville and said he dropped out of Barrington High School at 16.
He later returned to high school and finally graduated at age 21. Gonzales then attended community college before making the leap to Duke University.
Gonzales’ campaign materials gloss over his suburban origins, suggesting he was a neighborhood kid who “spent his early years” on the Southwest Side in South Lawndale, “where my family owned a home.”
When questioned, Gonzales allowed it was his grandmother’s home and that the closest he came to spending his early years there (a considerable distance from Madigan’s Midway Airport legislative district) was visiting her on weekends.

Brown: Nothing Rauner would like more than CPS takeover

The governor sent forth the state’s two top Republican legislators Wednesday as his advance team to tout a proposal they characterized as offering a “lifeline” for Chicago.
But their proposal looked a lot more like the hostile takeover of CPS that Rauner has wanted to engineer even before he entered the race for governor.
Back then Rauner was an informal adviser to Mayor Rahm Emanuel on education issues, just another rich guy with the mayor’s ear, which he filled with his anti-union views. Now he’s acting like a guy with a firm grip on one of the mayor’s other body parts.
The question before us Wednesday was whether the governor is serious about his plan to allow the Illinois Board of Education to take control of Chicago’s school system and allow it to file for bankruptcy, or whether it is just another bargaining maneuver intended to ratchet up pressure on city Democrats to make a deal with Rauner on his Springfield agenda.
The answer may be both.

Mitchell: Are black women being singled out on abortions?

People who support abortion rights, on the other hand, rarely raise their voices.
A few years ago, however, abortion-rights activists confronted the shocking “Endangered Species” anti-abortion ad campaign that targeted the African-American community.
In 2011 the Texas-based Life Always anti-abortion group put up billboards in several cities, including Chicago, with text that included: “The most dangerous place for African-Americans is in the womb.”
A lot of black women considered the campaign offensive and an attempt to shame the black community.

Unfortunately, the “shaming” theme popped up again on Sunday when thousands of anti-abortion activists braved the extreme cold to participate in the March for Life Chicago rally downtown.
The Rev. Corey Brooks, pastor of the New Beginnings Church in Woodlawn and an early supporter of Gov. Bruce Rauner, called on the activists to take their fight to the black community.
“No longer will we stand on the sideline and let these abortions happen in our community and be silent while babies go unborn,” he said.
According to Brooks, even though the black community makes up 12.6 percent of the population, it participated in 30 percent of the abortions.

Steinberg: Rauner does the impossible

Sure, anyone paying attention to Illinois is compelled to believe that Bruce Rauner has accomplished nothing in his first year in office except shred programs for children, the disabled and the poor.
Not only did Rauner fail to make tangible progress, but he didn’t even tread water properly. The normal operation of the state, such as passing an annual budget, failed to occur, sacrificed on the altar of the governor’s hunger for term limits, union enfeeblement and other unrelated pet causes. He’s like an office manager getting himself hired by promising to expand a business who then promptly fails to pay the electric bill, as a point of principle against the electric company monopoly, so they turn the lights off. Now we’re sitting in the dark, listening to him explain.
The temptation is to conclude Illinois would do better with no governor at all, than this one who can’t seem to manage basic human interactions. On Thursday, Rauner announced his support for Illinois Senate President John Cullerton’s pension-reform plan, only to have Cullerton immediately cringe away, shivering, from the governor’s embrace. “It’s not my plan,” Cullerton said, explaining that Rauner had twisted his idea.
But give credit where due: Rauner has accomplished something real, something that I would have thought impossible:
He makes Rod Blagojevich look good.
How Cornel West hurts Bernie Sanders

My problem with Sen. Bernie Sanders and his outreach to African Americans can be summed up in two words: Cornel West.
Much has been written about the Vermont independent’s appeal to black voters and whether he can pry them away from Hillary Clinton. And all I can say is good luck with that. I and plenty of other African Americans won’t soon forget the deranged ravings of the revered Ivy League professor against President Obama.
During a November 2012 interview with Democracy Now, West branded Obama “a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface.” Then there was that May 2011 interview with Truthdig where West called the nation’s first African American president “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats.” In that same sitdown, West talked about his 2010 run-in with the president. “I wanted to slap him on the side of his head,” West said, who took his significant policy disagreements with the president down an ugly path zealously cut by birthers.

As much as Cornel West infuriates me, his endorsement of Sanders and whatever assistance he offers Sanders in terms of outreach to black folk, is not what irks Jonathan –
Jonathan Capehart is simply another one of the painfully mediocre, hollow pay to play membership of what embarrassingly passes as media today ….ecstatic and over the moon and beyond flattered when one of the pre- kick-off of Clinton campaign cocktail invitations landed on his desk…
The idea was to ‘court’ the media not only to ensure favorable coverage for Hillary, but full support of the coronation process already in progress – and the media flunkies sign-on as unofficial surrogates…And so many of them including Jonathan naturally bit…They where so overwhelmingly flattered by this extremely marginal attention represented in the cocktail invitation, they even offered to sacrifice their first-borns as a thank-you to the Clintons for the great honor of not only considering them to be their unofficial flunkies, but even knowing their name – and considering them relevant and ‘influential’ enough to be courted…
Never mind that all the Clintons had to do was mass-mail invites – in much the same way businesses send out random mass solicitations courtesy of random mailing lists that sometimes incorrectly address you as ‘Mr.’ when you are a woman….obtained from any number of sources including White and Yellow pages and the United States Postal Service..
With a sip of his cocktail, Jonathan immediately went to work trying to distinguish himself as a super loyal flunky…in much the same way a kindergartner tries to impress the class teacher and nursery attendants with scribbles on paper he insists is a portrait he made for each of them…to which he’s rewarded with a pat on the head and a cookie – which all the other kids get too – scribbles or not…
Jonathan Capehart had so many opportunities over the years – as he so gratefully and smugly occupied his shallow, token black (and gay black man) revolving seat at habitually offensive and contemptuous Joe Scarborough’s table, and as stand-in host on the usual one or two MSNBC shows – to forcefully address Cornel West and his offensive utterances..
Jonathan Capehart never did…his one weak sauce, mealy-mouthed write-up in WaPo in 2011 actually agreed with Cornel West on the basics, but mildly objected to the way Cornel West presented his ‘grievances’ ….and Jonathan’s objection to Cornel West was cast more in terms of the concept of the ‘holier than thou black’…Jonathan had little of his own opinion, instead much of his write-up focused on what he assumed were Al Sharpton’s response to Cornel West… words Rev. Al spoke at an earlier event…Mealy-mouthed Jonathan basically hid behind Rev. Al’s skirt…and that was the extent of Jonathan’s vocal ‘outrage’ concerning Cornel West..
In much the same way Jonathan has conveniently developed amnesia over the blatantly obvious shenanigans of the Clintons – and now shamelessly and incredulously waxes poetic about the ‘easy relationship’ between the President and the woman he was literally forced to offer a position in his administration – to contain her and her husband’s universally acknowledged vindictive propensities, and for the sake of the unity of the Democratic party..
The Sec. of State job offer (after President Obama refused to pick Hillary as his V.P in spite of every threat under the sun from her camp), still saw the Clintons actually negotiating the terms and conditions under which ‘they’d’ accept…still didn’t stop them from continued and still ongoing attempts to sabotage and undermine the President from within and outside his administration…
For the first time in history, as part of the ‘negotiations’, the President conceded and allowed his Sec. of State to exclusively pick much of the State Department – with the exception of Sidney Blumenthal…staffed with her forever hostile and anti-Obama PUMA friends and ‘loyal’ (read opportunistic) supporters who brazenly termed and turned the State Department into ‘Hillaryland’ – and generally operated in direct opposition to the White House and the President… For the first time in history, even the position of Chief of Protocol who among other responsibilities, overseas Blair House and every cultural and diplomatic detail pertaining to trips, visits, gift exchanges etc. between the President, his administration and foreign governments, and travels with the President on overseas trips, was filled by Hillary. She hired Capricia Marshall who now flew not with the President, but with her as the Sec of State…
Capricia Marshall is a longtime Hillary staffer (and very sly PUMA extraordinaire – and former Executive Director of HillPAC and Friends of Hillary in the 2008 elections) who’s worked for Hillary since her Arkansas days and was her special assistant, and then Social Secretary in the last 3 years of the Clinton White House (contrary to Desiree Rogers’ efforts to advertise otherwise, the Social Secretary is indeed a member of the First Lady’s team. The Social Secretary is traditionally picked by, actually works for and reports to the First Lady – not the President! Actually, the social Secretary typically reports to the First Lady’s Chief of Staff!)
But I digress…
Jonathan Capehart who has said and done precious little about all the many outrages against black folk – as long as he gets to mug and preen on Morning Joe when Scarborough does him the honor of giving him a seat at the table – which he only ever mostly occupies and smiles and offers very little and the occasional mealy-mouthed nothings…and had Cornel West endorsed Hillary Clinton – as was originally expected – and not *gasp*, Bernie Sanders …Jonathan would have made nary a peep still –
But Jonathan Capehart would have you now believe that he’s not only interested in and concerned about Cornel West’s endorsement of Sanders because West’s offensive rantings against the President won’t serve Bernie Sanders well in his outreach to black folks… but more importantly, Jonathan’s is a very thinly-veiled pro-Clinton propaganda piece which seeks to do a hit job on Bernie Sanders on Hillary’s behalf, utilizing Cornel West’s rantings –
This is in no way about President Obama or Capehart’s outrage at Cornel West for his offensive attacks on President Obama…rather Capehart seeks to use his WaPo write-up to make some ridiculously weak sauce and frankly, non-existent contrast with, and argument in Hillary’s favor …
Always, always look at from whence they come, who payeth them, and whose agenda the dost seek to serve and advance…

I can’t even imagine. I have a fear of being stuck on a highway. I never get on an expressway when it snows. Never. If it takes me twice as long on streets, so be it.
