    The Effort To Turn Out Latino Voters In Iowa Worked
    After a dismal 1,000 Hispanic voters came out in 2012, LULAC hoped to turn out 10,000 Latinos. While the bar was low, early indications are it led to record Hispanic turnout in the caucus.

    After dismal Latino turnout numbers in Iowa the past two presidential caucuses, early indications suggest that a $300,000 nonpartisan effort to get Hispanics to caucus succeeded in getting record turnout.

    The initiative by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) aimed to get 10,000 out of 50,000 registered Latino voters to caucus sites by repeatedly contacting them through phone calls and door knocks. NBC News exit poll shows that 4% of Democratic caucus-goers were Hispanic and 2% were on the Republican side. With both sides seeing huge turnout (171,000 for the Democrats and more than 180,000 for the GOP) that comes out to close to 10,500 Latinos.

    Only 1,000 Latinos caucused in 2012. In 2008, when the race was competitive for both Democrats and Republicans, that number was 3,500.

    The unlikely heroism of Barack Obama began for me the first and only time I saw him, on a warm winter day in Los Angeles in 2007. He had just declared his candidacy for president and was holding a rally at Rancho Cienega Park in the Crenshaw district. Crenshaw is the last primarily black area left in the city; it is next to Dorsey High School, one of three majority black high schools left in the 700,000-student Los Angeles Unified School District, and for nearly twenty years it was the site of the African Marketplace and Cultural Faire, held in late summer. In other words, anybody holding an event at Rancho Cienega was trying to get a message out to black folks. The fact that lots of white folks lived pretty close by, some just across the street at Village Green, a leafy condominium community built as a prototype of utopian urban living in the 1940s, didn’t matter. Nor did it matter that whites live in considerable numbers in Ladera Heights, a few miles north of Rancho Cienega, and in much greater numbers in Culver City, a couple of miles southwest. The proximity of these places doesn’t connect them at all. Crenshaw is a black nation-state, so those whites who do live here don’t live outdoors, are never seen on the streets, and more than likely tell their white friends and potential visitors that they live not in Crenshaw but in adjacent places like Culver City or West Los Angeles. They will acknowledge black neighborhoods only when special events are held there such as the African Marketplace or the Martin Luther King Day parade, when the place itself is the point; on those occasions, Crenshaw lights up as local exotica, an in-house tourist destination. But for most of the year, as far as Los Angeles and Southern California and the rest of the country and the rest of the world are concerned, Crenshaw, like black hubs in big cities anyw

    First Zika Virus Case Found Transmitted Through Sex

    The first case of a sexually-transmitted Zika virus, the infectious disease spreading quickly across the Americas, has been confirmed by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) in Dallas County, Texas.
    Previously believed to only be transmitted through mosquito bites, Zika has already been labeled a “global emergency” by the World Health Organization (WHO) and has inspired governments to act quickly to direct funds toward eradicating the virus.
    The virus, which first entered the Americas in 2014 through Brazil, has been linked to underdeveloped brains in newborn babies, which prompted some Latin American countries to recommend women hold off getting pregnant for at least two years. However, all of these countries offer little access to birth control and have strict laws about obtaining an abortion. With the new knowledge that Zika can be transmitted through sex, there may be additional pressure on governments of all sizes to ramp up access to contraceptives and reproductive health information.

      Beware the deceitful who are being used to confuse and distract us..You know we now constitute that all-important and very necessary and ultimate ‘firewall’ …We is ‘powerful’ …but only to the extent we can be exploited to coronate madam…and them are pulling out all the stops to ‘woo’ the ‘blacks’…But as usual it’s in the most superficial and manipulative of ways…and very much insults the intelligence of ‘the blacks’…

      And as usual, instead of showing the black masses evidence of their good and tangible deeds over the past 40 years in public service – which essentially amount to nada and lots of destroyed black lives and families….they are using bought and paid for black mouth pieces to smear the opposition, and to try to gin up outrage, confuse and distract…

      So much talk of ‘track record’, ‘proven experience’, and ‘knowing how to get things done’ – and yet hardly anything positive or tangible to support any of that…

      All we remember from those faux-prosperity years was the mass destruction of black youth and families…

      I even saw Joy Ann Reid jigging for Hillary last night…It was embarrassing…Most of them are acting like Clinton campaign communications reps to the ‘blacks’ …

      But how exactly does enriching Vernon Jordan, or giving gigs to Cheryl Mills and Karen Finney and serving shrimps to members of the CBC help black people…?

    Two years ago, I wrote a piece about Floyd Norman – the first black animator to work for Walt Disney.

    Born in 1935 in Santa Barbara, his love of animation first came when his mother took him to see Disney’s “Bambi” and “Dumbo.”

    By the time he was a high schooler, Norman knew his goal was to be an animator at Disney studios.

    After graduation, the brief version of his story goes like this… With the help of a friend Norman got an appointment at Disney and he walked into Disney studios, portfolio in hand, for an interview. But instead of getting a job, he was told to go to school, which Norman said later was the best advice anyone had ever given him. He entered the Art Center College of Design, and two years later, he got a call to go work for Disney. He dropped out of school and started working at the studio the following Monday. He worked on various features, including “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Sword in the Stone,” “The Jungle Book,” and several short subjects.

    Fox’s upcoming two-hour live musical event “The Passion,” about the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life on Earth, will be hosted by Tyler Perry, who will also narrate the production.

    Set in the present day, “The Passion” will follow the story of Jesus of Nazareth as he presides over the Last Supper, is betrayed by Judas, put on trial by Pontius Pilate, convicted, crucified and resurrected. The story will unfold live at some of New Orleans’ most famed locations.

    Glynn Turman has booked a guest-starring role in OWN’s upcoming original series “Queen Sugar,” from Ava DuVernay and produced by Warner Horizon Television.

    Turman will portray Ernest Bordelon, the patriarch and proud father of Nova (star Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe). An intelligent and loving man, Ernest is a sugar cane farmer who has kept from his family the fact that the farm is failing, and he hasn’t brought in a successful crop in two years.

    Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Training Day’ TV Project Gets a CBS Pilot Order (Race of Lead Roles Will Be Swapped)

    This will be at least the 3rd cop movie with a black lead that CBS has considered turning into a weekly TV series – “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Rush Hour” are the other 2. Of course we know that the network would eventually pass on the “Beverly Hills Cop” TV series which was to star Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley’s son (although a pilot was produced); the “Rush Hour” series, on the other hand, was ordered to series and is set to debut this year, as a mid-season replacement.

    The network (maybe the *whitest* of the so-called Big Four – ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) has now officially given a pilot order to a “Training Day” TV series adaptation, which, as was reported last summer, Antoine Fuqua had been shopping around to the broadcast networks, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Will Beall (“Gangster Squad”).

    No ETA yet, and it’s obviously too early for specifics, but what we do know is that the potential series will be set in the present day, and, instead of following the exploits of a black crooked veteran cop and a white idealistic rookie, Fuqua will switch the races of the pair, and have the rookie played by a black actor, and the rogue veteran cop played by a white actor.

        Look what they’re doing to Nina Turner…She’s now the enemy…and I read where some women described Nina as ‘ungrateful’ and ‘obnoxious’ and assured her that her political career was now effectively ‘over’…For the grievous crime of endorsing Sanders over Hillary…

      Cruz is a one trick pony. I think it’s going to be Rubio for the same reason it was Romney. He is the most presentable, seems a little less crazy than the others. But, yeah, regarding Cruz being born in Canada, the right wing is never bothered by their own hypocrisy.

    Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton essentially tied in the Iowa caucus on Monday night, in a tight race that both camps say will help jump start their bids for the Democratic nomination. Here’s what happened last night, and what happens next:

    This was the closest Democratic Iowa caucus in history.

    As of early Tuesday morning, with all but one precinct reporting, Clinton had a razor-thin margin over Sanders — 49.86 percent to 49.57 percent. According to the chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, the results are the closest in Iowa Democratic caucus history.
