    On SCOTUS, Pressure Falls on Endangered GOP Senators

    All corners of the Republican Party have made themselves very clear: they intend to, in Donald Trump’s words, “delay, delay, delay” the confirmation of Antonin Scalia’s replacement on the Supreme Court until after the 2016 election. Ted Cruz has signaled his intention to lead a blockade, and Mitch McConnell intends to run a blockade.

    All of this would be unprecedented, despite conservative protestations to the contrary. Conventional wisdom seems to suggest that McConnell can hold the Supreme Court nomination hostage for the whole year. But is that true?

    It’s not necessary for the entire GOP to confirm the nominee. It only requires a few GOP Senators to join with the Democrats to fulfill their Constitutional duties. And as it turns out, there are quite a few Republican Senators in blue states who would be pilloried as intransigent obstructionists if they refused to confirm commonsense consensus nominees.

    Among these Senators would be Senator Mark Kirk in Illinois, who is already Democrats’ primary target for a Senate takeover. Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson is less ideologically likely to cross the aisle, but with Russ Feingold already seeming likely to defeat him in November, it’s not clear that Johnson can afford to give Democrats yet another cudgel with which to attack him. The same goes for Senator Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire, Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania and Rob Portman in Ohio.

      The hell of it is, we shouldn’t even need to talk about this. It just goes to show the lengths the GOP leadership will go to obstruct all democratic progress and even try to redefine the role of the executive branch of government. But, the POTUS appoints Supreme Court justices, period.

      Antonin Scalia died. It happens. No one gets out of here alive. So, PBO appoints a new justice, the Senate confirms the appointment. That’s how it’s going to be.

    Just to be clear folks

    IT IS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY TO APPOINT THE NEXT SUPREME COURT JUSTICE.

    This is not setting not about setting some precedent. It’s purely partisan politics, becasue the GOP know what the stakes are in this appointment. They know that they already RIGHT-LEAING COURT cannot & will not contiue to USURP OUR RIGHTS AS AMERICANS.

      This debate is an embarrassment to the United States of America. With the possible exception of Kasich and Bush (who is in pathetic, detestable denial about his brother), these candidates are completely execrable.

      The audience is revolting as well. It’s as if CBSN had transported a few hundred ancient Roman spectators from a gladiator fight in the Colosseum. Mortifying. The noise of the candidates and the crowd is still ringing in my ears. I’ve just finished watching it, and I want to take a shower because now I feel dirty. That has never happened to me from watching a debate.

        – There is widespread consensus that Donald Trump had a very bad night in Greenville. The question is whether that will cause lasting damage, or if he continues to be coated in Teflon.

        One of the problems for leaders of the chattering class is that they have been so wrong about Trump so many times for so many months that everyone is gun-shy about predicting his impending decline.

        The billionaire was flustered and cranky. Not only was he thrown off his game by sustained boos from the crowd and a pile-on by his rivals, but he often sounded more like a Democrat than a Republican.

        He didn’t just call George W. Bush’s decision to invade Iraq a disaster – which he has done before – but he blamed him for 9/11 and said that the former president “lied” about the presence of weapons of mass destruction as a pretext for war. “Obviously the war in Iraq was a big, fat mistake,” the frontrunner said at the Peace Center. “George Bush made a mistake. We can make mistakes, but that one was a beauty. We should have never been in Iraq. We have destabilized the Middle East.”
