The Jimi Hendrix Experience began to record their version of Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” on January 21, 1968, at Olympic Studios in London. According to engineer Andy Johns, Jimi Hendrix had been given a tape of Dylan’s recording by publicist Michael Goldstein, who worked for Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman. “(Hendrix) came in with these Dylan tapes and we all heard them for the first time in the studio”, recalled Johns. According to Hendrix’s regular engineer Eddie Kramer, the guitarist cut a large number of takes on the first day, shouting chord changes at Dave Mason who had appeared at the session and played guitar. Halfway through the session, bass player Noel Redding became dissatisfied with the proceedings and left. Mason then took over on bass. According to Kramer, the final bass part was played by Hendrix himself. Hendrix’s friend and Rolling Stones multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones played the various percussion instruments on the track. “That’s him playing the thwack you hear at the end of each bar in the intro, on an instrument called a vibraslap.” Jones originally recorded a piano part that was later mixed out in place of the percussion instruments. Kramer and Chas Chandler mixed the first version of “All Along the Watchtower” on January 26, but Hendrix was quickly dissatisfied with the result and went on re-recording and overdubbing guitar parts during June, July, and August at the Record Plant studio in New York.[21] Engineer Tony Bongiovi has described Hendrix becoming increasingly dissatisfied as the song progressed, overdubbing more and more guitar parts, moving the master tape from a four-track to a twelve-track to a sixteen-track machine. Bongiovi recalled, “Recording these new ideas meant he would have to erase something. In the weeks prior to the mixing, we had already recorded a number of overdubs, wiping track after track. [Hendrix] kept saying, ‘I think I hear it a little bit differently.’The finished version was released on the album Electric Ladyland in September 1968. The single reached number five in the British charts, and number 20 on the Billboard chart, Hendrix’s only top 20 entry there. The song also had the number 5 spot on Guitar World’s 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.

    Emmett Till and Tamir Rice, Sons of the Great Migration

    TAMIR RICE’S great-grandmother, Millie Lee Wylie, was born into a family of farm hands and sawmill workers. She married young and was left a widow when her husband died after a fall in a crooked river. With dreams of a new life, she packed up her belongings and left the tenant shacks of Alabama for the smokestacks of Cleveland, later sending for her three young sons. Like many of the women new to the north, she found work as a housekeeper and later as a hospital janitor. She would have two more children and marry a man named Robert Petty, who worked at the old Republic Steel plant and whose family had arrived years before from Mississippi by way of Kentucky.

    They found themselves hemmed into the worn-out, predominantly black east side of Cleveland, with other refugees from the South. He worked the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift; she worked from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. He played the numbers and bet the horses at Thistledown to help make the rent on their apartment, in a dilapidated four-flat owned by an Eastern European woman who saw no need to keep it up.

    They finally saved up for a two-story house with aluminum siding in the suburbs. The white neighbors began moving out shortly thereafter, a common response to black efforts to move up in most every receiving station in the North.

    Millie — now Mrs. Petty — went about recreating the things she missed from the “old country.” She planted collard greens and watermelons and raised chickens in the backyard. She cooked neck bone and made hogshead cheese, singing hymns — “I’m coming up on the rough side of the mountain” — as she worked. Sundays, she ushered at a storefront Baptist church in her belted navy dress with white gloves and collar, perfumed with her one indulgence, Chanel No. 5.

    After lives of work and want, both she and her husband died in their 50s, she of cancer and he of a heart attack after losing a lung from asbestos exposure at the plant. Their early deaths left the family ungrounded, without the close networks that had sustained their Southern ancestors. The daughter, Darlette Pinkston, suffered for it. Her marriage did not last, and she began living with a man who beat and threatened her until, fearing for her life, she killed him. Her daughter, Samaria, was 12 when she testified at the trial to the abuse she had witnessed and then lost her mother to prison for 15 years.

    Samaria moved between foster homes and then to the streets. She dropped out of school in ninth grade, worked odd jobs, cleaning and doing clerical work, and had four children, the youngest of whom was Tamir.

    She got tutors for her children, managed to get the oldest through high school and the others on track to finish. Tamir had swimming and soccer lessons and “Iron Man” DVDs. He had suffered such separation anxiety that she had to send him to nursery school with a picture of herself so he would know he would see her again.

    On the afternoon of Nov. 22, 2014, a Saturday, she let Tamir and his sister Tajai go to the recreation center by the park across the street before dinner. She was starting the lasagna when there was a knock at the door. Two children told her that Tamir had been shot. She didn’t believe them. “No, not my kids,” she told them. “My kids are in the park.” A neighbor boy had let Tamir play with his pellet gun without her knowing it. “I hadn’t seen the gun before,” she told me. “They knew better than to let me see it.”

    When she arrived, the officers would not let her near her son to comfort him as he lay bleeding on the ground, she said. They told her they would put her in the squad car if she didn’t stay back.

    As in the majority of the 21st-century cases of police shootings in the North, no one was prosecuted in the death of Tamir Rice. Late last December, a grand jury declined to indict the officer who killed him. Decades ago, in the Jim Crow South, Emmett Till’s killers were acquitted by an all-white jury, but at least they had gone to trial.

    I asked Michael Petty, Tamir’s great-uncle and a retired chaplain’s assistant in the Navy, how Millie, his mother, would have borne what happened to the great-grandson she never lived to see, in the place she traveled so far to reach. It would have crushed her, Mr. Petty said. “My mother would have carried that hurt,” he said, “and felt the pain of the generations.”

    What I am MOST angry and disappointed about is the fact that the Democratic Party has been Lackadaisical in it’s efforts to build our party’s leadership.

    We are left with two candidates that I have absolutely NO INTEREST in either Sanders or Clinton.

    NONE. It’s so very FRUSTRATING.

      The sad part is that this retrogressive stance taken by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the DNC is not just affecting the presidential race, they’re also wreaking havoc on the party at the State and local levels too…We’ve gone from the excitement and enthusiasm, progressive, forward-looking and hopeful fever of 2008 and 2012 to this ‘let’s not be too hopeful or set our sights too far’ or we’re ‘naive’…

      Knee-capping and hand-picking candidates and making no effort to include Democrats (all we’re good for is picking our pockets) in the actual process – which will absolutely hamper future party growth…How do we keep young people and even the old interested and excited and participating in the democratic process when the party hierarchy brazenly rig the game again and again in favor of candidates with whom they collude to play the system – and worse still, candidates who’ve been around long enough to make a real and tangible difference, but who haven’t…candidates who have over the years thanks to the party machine undeservedly accommodating and promoting them, have built ‘impressive’ resumes in theory…but have unimpressive records of doing or actually producing anything…nothing to show for the big titles and important positions they’ve held and continue to tout as proof of ‘experience and qualification’…resumes that sound good in theory but having been put to test haven’t held up and sure as hell haven’t served the general population in any way…

      How can one boast of being in ‘public service’ for 40 years – boast of holding all these powerful and important positions where they called the shots, including living in the Arkansas Governor’s mansion for 8 years, living in the White House for another 8 years, being Senator, being Sec of State – and yet be hard-pressed to tell or show you exactly what it is they’ve actually accomplished…still have a hard time showing you exactly what it is she’s done and how she’s made a positive difference in people’s lives…Generalities and a vague play on words and wrapping oneself around the sitting President in order to claim his accomplishments over the past 7+ years as hers by association, doesn’t even begin to cut it – and is certainly not enough – and does not add up to what one would expect from a boast of ‘I know how to get it done…or I’ve been around’…Your husband was attorney general, governor and president for a total of 16 years…and nothing ..except destroying black lives..and leaving Arkansas as they found it…still a literal dump…

      When the elected black officials who are now out and about schucking for Hillary and telling you how they ‘know’ the Clintons ‘well’ and talk about all the ‘great things’ she and Bill have done for black folks, one would think that at some point somebody would ask – ‘great things like what..?’ What exactly has she done for black folks …besides feeding a few of the self-appointed ‘black leaders’ shrimps and cocktails every time the Clintons need them to herd the sheep out for them to exploit –

      We heard in 2008 how then Senator Obama was too green and Hillary had the depth and breadth of experience and knew ‘where the bodies were buried’ and how to ‘pragmatically’ get things done…yet, look how well the ‘green’ Senator turned out..

      Sometimes as has been proven, it takes much more than ‘ready on day one’ … I’ll take integrity, character and good judgement any day over Hillary’s version of ‘preparedness’..

      And I’ll vote for Bernie Sanders over Hillary any day…

      At first it seemed like it was that..

      But the cough actually became real after her initial dramatics with the waving around her cough drop…

      Here’s something interesting, SG2. I was looking at Hillary’s senate career. She wasn’t much of a legislator. According to Wikipedia, “While a member of the U.S. Senate, Clinton sponsored 713 pieces of legislation. Of these, three became law.” The three bills are:
      1.) Kate Mullany National Historic Site Act Unanimous Acclamation Establishes the Kate Mullany National Historic Site in Troy, New York. Authorizes appropriations.
      2.) A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at
      2951 New York Highway 43 in Averill Park, New York, as the “Major George Quamo Post Office Building”.
      3.) A bill to designate a portion of United States Route 20A, located in Orchard Park, New York, as the “Timothy J. Russert Highway”.

      Maybe this isn’t unusual for a freshman senator, I don’t really know. But she certainly didn’t hit one out of the park.

    US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans

    HOUSTON (FOX 26) – Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.

    Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.

    He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.

    Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans.

    Green says as a result, those attorneys and debt collectors are getting judgements in federal court and asking judges to use the US Marshals Service to arrest those who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

        I hope you’re right, SG2. I haven’t been watching CNN so I didn’t see Edith Childs, but that is good to hear. The Clintons do not deserve a “get out of jail free” card from ANY segment of the electorate, in my opinion.

        A lot of these polls and stuff are put out there to support a particular narrative and shape a particular perspective and outcome.

        The aim is to demoralize and tamp down and depress any potential momentum against Hillary…It’s about sending a message that the Clintons have it in the bag so don’t even bother..

        But when the Clintons are so rattled that they are calling in reinforcements that typically don’t do pedestrian stuff like campaigning and outreach to the plebs…when you have Vernon Jordan etc. all flying into South Carolina…You know they’re worried..

        I just caught a bit on MSNBC …I think it’s a preview of what’s to come: Marc Morial and a Black Lives Matter rep appearing on a segment with Craig Melvin…Marc Morial’s quick retort was that they aren’t going to allow black folks to be divided by age after the young man from BLM said that Hillary isn’t interested in what they have to say which is why she’s run to the black establishment who have been around forever and done nothing about the problems..

    Report: Blacks Choose Low-Wage College Majors

    The good news is that African-Americans are graduating from college at a historically high rate. According to new research, however, they are choosing majors at the low end of the pay scale, PBS.org reports.

    Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce found that Blacks are over-represented in service fields, such as education and social work. Early childhood education, which pays about $38,000 a year, is one of the most common majors for Black students with a bachelor’s degree.

    By contrast, African-Americans represent a small percentage of those earning degrees in the highest-paying majors. They comprise just 8 percent of engineers and 5 percent of computer science majors, who earn a median salary of $65,000.

    There are long-term economic consequences for those career choices. According to PBS.org, there’s a $4 million gap in lifetime earnings between an early childhood educator and a petroleum engineer. Overall, Black college graduates have less savings and disposable income than their White peers. That also means that college educated Blacks have less wealth to pass on to their children.

    “The low-paying majors that African Americans are concentrated in are of high social value but low economic value,” said Anthony P. Carnevale, director of the Georgetown Center and co-author of the report, in a statement accompanying the report.

    Nevada is still the new kid on the block when it comes to early-state status in the presidential race. But this year, the state could play a pivotal role on both sides.

    With the Democratic caucus a few days away on Feb. 20 and the Republican caucus a week hence on Feb. 23, both sides have become increasingly intense, especially the pitched battle here between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

    The Republicans are sending surrogates as South Carolina intervenes Saturday, three days before Nevada Republicans vote on their presidential preference. But both Democratic candidates spent the weekend in Nevada, and Clinton canceled events in Florida on Monday to campaign an extra day in the state, a clear sign her campaign is concerned about a place once considered a lock for her.
