Monday open thread | Joe Biden: Bernie Sanders has credibility on income inequality

Washington (CNN)—Vice President Joe Biden offered effusive praise for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders Monday, lauding Hillary Clinton’s chief rival for doing a “heck of a job” on the campaign trail and praising Sanders for offering an authentic voice on income inequality.

And while Biden said Democrats had a slate of “great candidates” running for president, he suggested Clinton was a newcomer to issues like the growing gap between rich and poor.

“Bernie is speaking to a yearning that is deep and real. And he has credibility on it,” Biden said during an interview with CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger.

“It’s relatively new for Hillary to talk about that,” Biden continued, acknowledging that Clinton has “come forward with some really thoughtful approaches to deal with the issue” of income inequality.

“Hillary’s focus has been other things up to now, and that’s been Bernie’s — no one questions Bernie’s authenticity on those issues,” he said.

The problem with Black Lives Matter, as told by Newark activist | The Backgrounder Podcast
By Paul Brubaker | The Backgrounder

Newark attorney Junius Williams, a cornerstone of civil rights activism since the 1960s, knows the revolution will not be televised. But he might add that it won’t be online either.

Today’s civil rights activism, including the Black Lives Matter movement, relies on the internet – perhaps too much, Williams said on the latest edition of The Backgrounder Podcast.

“I think it’s too easy,” said Williams. “Organizing is a matter of developing relationships with other people. And you can’t develop a relationship with somebody else, I contend, by using the Internet. “It’s got to be one on one, baby.”

“I watched your show this morning,” Trump responded. “You have me almost as a legendary figure, I like that.”

After that, Brzezinski thanked Trump for agreeing to the interview. “You, you get great ratings and a raise,” he told her. “Me, I get nothing.”

“This will make us all look good,” Trump said, to which Scarborough replied, “Exactly.”

Scarborough and Trump then chatted about their thoughts on his most recent debate performance. “The next morning when I saw the CBS poll, I knew that the people who mattered didn’t think you lost it,” Scarborough said. “I mean, you came in a strong second. And I’ll tell you what was the most revealing thing was [Jeb Bush] came in last, the guy you attacked.”

Brzezinski then tried to ask Scarborough about a question she planned to ask Trump, trying to be discrete but eventually giving away the subject. “Do you not want me to do, the um, the ones with, um, deportation?”

“We really do have to go to some questions,” Scarborough responded.

“That’s right,” Trump agreed, before joking, “Nothing too hard, Mika.”

“Okay,” Brzezinski can be heard telling someone. In the end, there were no questions about immigration or deportations during the town hall. At the same time, Scarborough can be heard discussing potential questions with a producer, and Trump makes a comment indicating he can’t hear what they’re talking about.

Remember fam, Univision is now part owned by top Clinton financial supporter and Zionist, Haim Saban..

      Haim Saban it was,
who on the Clintons behalf, has funded and master-minded several Hillary for president moves over the years – including the thing at the Saban Forum in December 2012, where Hillary was feted and praised with a short ‘movie’ that was a pre-2016 presidential endorsement with tributes from the likes of Henry Kissinger,Zionist right-winger and former Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Bush poodle Tony Blair, John McCain etc. Of course they got John Kerry and President Obama to make cameos too…(or they wouldn’t have been considered sufficiently pro-Israel or pro-woman..LOL!)

“…In September 2004, Hillary Clinton described Saban as a very good friend, supporter and adviser: “I am grateful for his commitment to Israel, to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East and to my foundation’s work, particularly on reconciliation issues.”[5] In May 2007, Haim publicly declared his support for Clinton in 2008 presidential election.[20] In June 2007, Saban and Steven Spielberg co-hosted a Hillary Clinton fundraiser at the house of Peter Chernin, the President of News Corporation.[26] According to the Los Angeles Times,[26] the fundraiser brought in over $850,000.

In March 2008, Saban was among a group of major Jewish donors to sign a letter to Democratic Party house leader Nancy Pelosi warning her to “keep out of the Democratic presidential primaries.”[27] The donors, who “were strong supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton presidential campaign”, “were incensed by a March 16 interview in which Pelosi said that party ‘superdelegates’ should heed the will of the majority in selecting a candidate.”[27] The letter to Pelosi stated the donors “have been strong supporters of the DCCC” and implied, according to The Jewish Telegraphic Agency,[27] that Pelosi could lose their financial support in important upcoming congressional elections.

On May 19, 2008, it was reported that Haim Saban had “offered $1 million to the Young Democrats of America during a phone conversation in which he also pressed for the organization’s two uncommitted superdelegates to endorse Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee for president.”[28]

Saban has also made donations to members of the Republican Party including a 2003 contribution to George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign.

Regarding Jane Harman AIPAC Controversy, in April 2009, New York Times, quoting anonymous sources, said a caller promised her that Saban would withhold campaign contributions to Representative Nancy Pelosi if she did not select Ms. Harman for the intelligence post…”

No such thing as harmless coincidences…ever..

    • eliihass says:

About that Haim Saban and Sheldon Adelson collaboration…

“…The billionaire political kingmakers planning to bankroll much of the 2016 presidential campaign spoke out together Sunday with blunt warnings on key issues for their respective parties.

Haim Saban, a media mogul and close Democratic ally of Hillary Rodham Clinton, criticized President Obama’s outreach to Iran, declaring that “we’ve shown too many carrots and a very small stick.”

Adelson, 81, and Saban, 70, have gained enormous political power in the new era of super PACs and unlimited contributions, and both made it clear during a rare joint appearance Sunday before an audience of several hundred Israeli Americans that they intend to assert that power during the next presidential campaign and beyond with policy demands for their candidates. In particular, they vowed to press both sides for a more hawkish approach to the Middle East.

Appearing before a new group called the Israeli American Council, both men issued a call for unity when it comes to support for the Jewish state, reminding all prospective presidential candidates of the primacy of the U.S.-Israel relationship. And they agreed that Obama and his administration have not been tough enough in protecting Israel’s interests.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Saban described the president’s relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “like oil and water.” That has fed a perception, he said, that Obama has not been a friend to Israel, although Saban said he thinks that, in reality, “there’s never been this level of cooperation with any previous president.”

Still, Saban said that he thinks Clinton would repair the relationship and that he has told her he would spend “whatever it takes” to propel her into the White House. That includes giving millions of dollars to Priorities USA, a super PAC that helped Obama in 2012 and is revving up to aid Clinton in 2016.

“I have told her and everybody who’s asked me, ‘Whatever it takes, we’re going to be there,’ ” Saban said. “I think she would be a fantastic president for the United States, an incredible world leader and one under whom I believe — deeply — the relationship with the U.S. and Israel will be significantly reinforced”

Saban said that fundamentalist Iranians represent a real threat. If necessary to defend Israel, and as a last resort, he added, “I would bomb the living daylights out of the sons of bitches.”

Saban endorsed a bill from Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), who addressed the group on Saturday night, that would subject any Iranian nuclear deal to congressional approval. Saban said a system of checks and balances with the Obama administration on foreign policy is critical.

Saban used dark humor to spin last week’s Democratic wipeout in the midterm elections. “Do you know the movie ‘Life of Brian,’ by Monty Python? While they’re being crucified, they’re singing, ‘Always look at the bright side of life,’ ” Saban said in the interview, playfully humming along as he recited the movie tune.

106-YEAR-OLD VIRGINIA MCLAURIN DANCING WITH THE OBAMAS IS THE BLACKEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED THIS WEEK
    Damon Young, 2/22/16

Virginia McLaurin is 106 years old.
Which means she was 11 years old during the Tulsa race riots; an act of terrorism that burned the Greenwood District — the wealthiest Black community in the country (aka “Black Wall Street”) — to the ground. 39 people were “officially” killed then. And “officially” is in quotes because other estimates place the death toll at closer to 300.

She was five when the Ku Klux Klan reemerged after launching in the 1860s and being largely dismantled by the federal government in 1871. She was also alive during the Great Migration, existed at a time when lynchings were frequent and weren’t just quasi legal but were actually carried out by lawmakers, and was solidly into middle age when Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka finally declared segregation unconstitutional.

Everything we’ve read in history books (including things we didn’t learn until adulthood because they weren’t in any of our history books), seen in documentaries, and heard about from grandparents, great aunts, and great uncles about the plight of Black Americans in the early 20th century was lived through by her. Her life is a history. Her very existence a relic. She is a living heirloom; her every breath a testimony; a sermon proselytizing the agony and the beauty of our collective and continued struggle.

So imagine the feeling this dear woman must have felt when invited to the White House to meet our Black president. Imagine the joy shooting through her skin when touching Barack’s hand and seeing Michelle. Picture the jubilance and mirth permeating her 106-year-old veins and joints and bones when dancing with the Black first family. Think of the glee coursing through her spirit when close enough to sense and smell the scent of Barack’s aftershave and Michelle’s shea butter. Dream about a 106-year-old Black woman dancing a dance that’s been building, brick by brick, for 106 years.

Sanders makes surprise visit to Sunday church supper

West Columbia, South Carolina (CNN)—Brookland Baptist Church’s congregation had a surprise visitor Sunday afternoon when Sen. Bernie Sanders popped in for an unexpected stop during Sunday supper here in West Columbia.

The Democratic presidential candidate, coming off a loss to Hillary Clinton Saturday in Nevada, worked the mostly African-American crowd, stopping to shake hands, take photos and hug a few small children who ventured up to him.

Sanders, campaigning in the Palmetto State ahead of Saturday’s upcoming primary, was joined at the church by his wife, Jane, and also Ben Jealous, the former NAACP head who has endorsed Sanders.

After mingling for a bit, Jealous introduced Sanders to the crowd as people milled around with plates of food.

“This is the most important place in the country right now,” Jealous told the crowd of a couple hundred people. “And you are the most important voters in the country right now. And there are people who will say to you, there’s a dreamer who’s running for president. And his dreams are so big, y’all shouldn’t dream that big. But in our community when they say, ‘Don’t dream big,’ we say, ‘Yes we can.’ And so I ask you ladies and gentlemen, are you ready to dream big?”

Before handing off the mic, he evoked Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., saying that there is no one in either party who is ready to fight racism, militarism and greed like Sanders.

“This is America, we should not be having more people in jail, largely African-American and Latino, than any other country on earth. So one of the points I have tried to make, we are going to invest in education and jobs … not more jails, not more incarceration,” Sanders said.

This proves beyond all doubt that the Democratic base wanted a choice, a contest, a race, a competition, an alternative to the hand picked, party leadership favorite. Dammit, this ain’t North Korea, it’s America.

But I’ve got to say, what the Clintons are doing right now to court the black vote, their firewall, is making me sick. And those who go along with this are sell outs, and they sell out cheap, and I have no respect for them. Every last one of them needs to go back to Government 101 class and give some serious thought to what a democracy is supposed to be. And those who act in any way to make this country less democratic are diminishing the contribution and sacrifice of every American who believed in a free nation with equality and justice for all. They might think they are doing nothing wrong, that it is no big deal, but it is. Their nonsense adds up, and the sum of it hurts the nation.

Hillary Clinton is not a good candidate. Period. And she should not be the successor of President Barack Obama. Too much has been achieved to risk it on her.

Conservatives: Court nominee must be stopped at all costs
    02/22/16 06:00 AM EST

Conservative leaders are sending a blunt message to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: The Supreme Court is more important than your majority.

McConnell’s (R-Ky.) top priority since becoming majority leader last year has been to put his colleagues in a strong position to win reelection, in part by showing that Republicans can govern.

But bottling up President Obama’s nominee to replace the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia could bring the work of the chamber to a screeching halt, if Democrats choose to retaliate.

Conservatives say that’s the risk McConnell has to take.

Taking action on a Supreme Court nominee — even through the Judiciary Committee — when Obama has less than a year left in his term would be a cardinal sin, conservative activists say.

They argue the ideological balance of the court is so important that it’s not worth playing political games to take the pressure off vulnerable Republican incumbents.

“I would rank having a conservative justice as more important than having the majority in the Senate,” said David Bozell, president of For America, a conservative advocacy group. “God knows this Republican majority in the Senate hasn’t done much anyway for conservatism, period.

“If you look at some of the conservative movement’s successes, it’s in large part due to the court doing some decent things and making some good decisions,” he added.

Four Paths Obama Could Take With His Supreme Court Nominee
    BY IAN MILLHISER
    FEB 22, 2016 8:00 AM

By many accounts, President Obama hopes to name his choice to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia within two weeks, so there is precious little time to speculate about who that nominee may be. There’s also a dauntingly long list of potential nominees. Seven years in the White House, including more than a year when a Democratic Senate could confirm nominees without fear that they would be blocked by a filibuster, enabled Obama to elevate a number of potential justices to lower courts. Additionally, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) appears to have used his three appointments to his state’s highest court to build a farm team for Democratic presidents looking for a future Supreme Court nominee.

The person the president eventually picks will reveal a great deal about how he plans to confront Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) plan to block anyone Obama sends up. Below are four potential strategies the White House may deploy. This list is not meant to provide an exhaustive catalog of potential nominees. Many names that have been suggested in the media as possible nominees (Loretta Lynch, Pam Harris, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Pam Karlan, Paul Smith, etc.) are not discussed below.

This Is the Date Bernie Sanders Berns Out
With South Carolina and Super Tuesday looming ahead, Bernie Sanders’ campaign is fast approaching an expiration date.

Not only will the revolution not be televised—at least in the case of Senator Bernie Sanders—it appears to have an expiration date.
Despite collecting millions in small-dollar donations and packing thousands of people into arenas around the country, despite topping Hillary Clinton for the first time in a national poll of likely Democratic voters, the path to victory has narrowed sharply for Sanders. Some would argue that a window of opportunity slammed shut Sunday night in Nevada and that the upcoming race in South Carolina is the proverbial kitty-bar.
Sanders may well have the volunteers and the money to keep going, but after March 15 he’ll have to grapple with a new set of questions. Does he still have the ability to push Clinton further left? And he can he bring enough new voters into the process to exert any real influence?
