Julián Castro could be VP next year — or out of a job. He’s ready either way.

Julián Castro cut into his overcooked brisket, dumped four artificial sweeteners into his iced tea and shifted in his seat. It’s not that he didn’t want to answer the question, it’s just that he couldn’t.
Sure, he’s thought about the possibility of being picked as Hillary Clinton’s running mate on the Democratic ticket. How could he not? What with the “Ready for Julián?” and “Castro Is in VP Training Camp” headlines percolating out of the political press. Even Stephen Colbert tried to trick the 41-year-old secretary of housing and urban development into saying he wanted to be vice president in a recent late-night appearance.
And it’s not that he’s ashamed of his ambition. You don’t run for mayor of San Antonio at 30 or become the youngest member of President Obama’s Cabinet without having a healthy ego. But running for vice president, if it’s even possible for someone to run, is different. If Castro dares show too much interest, he looks desperate and his chances evaporate. Looking uninterested, however, is also not an option.
“What makes this different is that this position isn’t really yours to talk about,” Castro finally said, slipping into second-person. “It’s not my decision; it’s nobody’s to claim.”

I used to think that the Hillary et al would be reluctant to attack Bernie Sanders because he looks like everyone’s grandfather or reminds everyone of their grandfather. This was not a deterrent, however.

Hillary Clinton’s most prominent African American supporter in South Carolina is defending her against accusations by Bernie Sanders that she’s pandering to the black community for votes.
In a press call with reporters on Tuesday, Rep. Jim Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat in the House, pushed back against Sanders’ claim that Clinton is embracing President Obama as a means of cozying up to black voters.
Clyburn said Clinton has long been committed to causes important to African Americans, noting that in the 1970s, Clinton advocated on behalf of minority children and for improving prison conditions for black inmates in states in the Deep South.
“Who was she pandering to back then in the 1970s when she was down here around the time before Barack Obama was a teenager?” Clyburn asked. “She certainly wasn’t pandering to Obama, or anyone else for that matter. I understand political rhetoric; I’ve engaged in it myself. But that account doesn’t hold water.”
Clyburn’s endorsement was a coup for Clinton in South Carolina, where Democrat primary voters will head to the polls on Saturday.

In reading all the attacks on Bernie Sanders this AM, I was thinking that his supporters have used amazing restraint with regards to the Clintons marriage problems in the 90s. I remember the nation being bogged down in all of that and I hated it so much.
One day in 1992 just before the election, I got home from work, flipped on the TV and saw there was a press conference with Gennifer Flowers. Kind of a sleazy looking woman talking about Bill Clinton. So, I listened to her and I remember thinking, “Damn, she ain’t lying.” I’m not saying I was a prophet, and I never predicted how bad it would get, but I knew that Bill would have a problem with this somewhere down the line.
And it was such a soap opera while he was in office. Maybe folks think he’s too old now and they’re leaving it alone. I think it’s just another dimension of his untrustworthiness, quite frankly. Like promising universal healthcare and giving halfway through his first term.

Brendin Smith was only four years old when his mother, Monique Jeffrey, realized her son was no longer wanted at Success Academy. Jeffrey says that administrators at one of the charter school’s Brooklyn locations told her the kindergartener “wasn’t going to make it”. Jeffrey later found out that Brendin was one of 16 students who been placed on the school’s “Got to Go” list, a list uncovered by the New York Times that singled out students that the school wanted to shed.
Success Academy, the largest charter school network in New York City, also has some of the highest test scores. Critics have alleged that Success Academy achieves this in part by driving low performers out.

The shade that one Black Lives Matter activist threw President Barack Obama Thursday while declining an invitation to a White House Black History Month event only seemed surprising to those not paying attention.
During both of Obama’s terms, and even before, a visible minority of black activists—some prominent, some not, and from different age groups—have criticized their president out loud when they felt their community slighted. They have been, and still are, disappointed because, they say, most of what they have gotten from him is shallow symbolism, while other constituency groups have gotten attention to specific, targeted policies. It seems like a long time ago since those days in 2008 when Barack Obama represented so much to so many, particularly those in the black, sometimes radicalized, grassroots: A new black history was visible, with new opportunities and new freedoms possible.
These 3 NEGROES dissecting, analyzing, and questioning , ‘WRESTLING’ with President Obama’s BLACKNESS are really questioning their own self worth and BLACKNESS.

Georgia deputies buy bullied Macon child Air Jordans
Three Bibb County deputies received national attention after helping a child who was being picked on because of his old, worn sneakers.

Three Bibb County deputies are being recognized on ABC World News as “Persons of the Week.”
The deputies, Trinicholas Carswell, Timothy Jones and Jeff Howell, are getting national attention for what they did after responding to a call in Macon Feb. 13., according to a sheriff’s office news release. Turns out a 16-year-old girl was picking on a 9-year-old boy. The boy’s grandmother, Carolyn Taylor told deputies several kids were picking on him and making fun of his worn out shoes.
Last Saturday when Taylor looked outside, she saw the 16-year-old placing her grandson Adam Flowers in a choke hold.
“When I heard him scream, I knew he was in trouble,” said Taylor.
Carswell learned that kids were regularly making fun of the child’s old sneakers. The deputies found out that Adam is an A-student at Vineville Academy. His grandmother is taking care of him and his two brothers by herself and she struggles to care for them, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The deputies wanted to do something to help, so after leaving Adam and his grandmother, they went to The Shoppes at River Crossing in north Macon and bought the boy a brand new pair of Air Jordans.

Trump and the Stability of Political Parties

A year ago, the late Andrew Kohut examined how the Democratic Party has drifted to the left in recent years. In some ways, this is a departure (as on support for gay marriage) and in some ways it is a return (“liberal self-identification has edged up to its highest level in more than 20 years”). It has been hard to miss the signs. The centrist Democratic Leadership Council became so marginalized and irrelevant during the Iraq War years that it went out of business. The Blue Dog caucus in Congress has been utterly decimated since Obama was sworn into office in 2009. Joe Lieberman, the party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2000, was defeated in a primary and finished his career as an independent.
But, a party takes a long time to completely lose its DNA. You can date the modern Democratic Party to the election of FDR in 1932. For the first thirty-plus years of its modern existence, it co-existed as the party of the anti-Catholic Jim Crow south and the very Catholic and racially diverse northern urban machines and union movements. Even today, Democrats are more at ease than Republicans with making odd coalitions of convenience and settling for less than ideal compromises. Part of the reason for this, though, is that the Democrats controlled Congress almost uninterrupted for the first sixty-two years of their post-1932 existence. They had the responsibility to govern so they learned the techniques of governance.
The Republican Party’s DNA is different. They spent those first 62 years largely in the Congressional wilderness. They were siloed in the north and in the suburbs, and in the southwest and left coast. When they had power it was in the White House, and their presidents (including Reagan) had to, for the most part, deal with Democrats in Congress. Because the rank-and-file didn’t have to take responsibility for legislating, and because they didn’t like most of the legislation that was created, they developed a permanent minority, anti-federal government mentality. They also developed the tools and habits that make a minority party successful.
These characteristics have proven to be very resilient despite the 1994 Gingrich Revolution that brought Republican dominance to Congress, and despite the eight-year run of the Bush administration.
One area where Republicans have been able to fuse disparate elements is in the anti-choice movement, where conservative Catholics and evangelical protestants have made alliance over the forty-three years since the Roe v. Wade decision. We saw the fissure line there open up a bit last week in South Carolina when the Republican frontrunner and Pope Francis got into a fight over immigration policy.
The death of Antonin Scalia and the impending fight over his replacement are interesting in this context. Justice Scalia was the greatest living symbol of this fusion between the Moral Majority of Jerry Falwell and conservative Catholicism. Scalia was also the leading voice (post-Reagan) and most powerful player in the Conservative Movement’s long war against the FDR coalition’s legacy and accomplishments.

McConnell says Senate won’t vote on Obama Court pick

WASHINGTON — Top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that his party won’t permit a vote on any Supreme Court nominee submitted by President Barack Obama and will instead “revisit the matter” after the presidential election in November.
The Kentucky Republican acknowledged that Obama is within his rights to nominate a replacement for the late Antonin Scalia but said Republicans controlling the Senate would exercise their rights.
“Presidents have a right to nominate just as the Senate has its constitutional right to provide or withhold consent,” the Majority Leader said in a speech on the Senate floor. “In this case, the Senate will withhold it.”
McConnell quoted a 1992 Senate speech by Vice President Joe Biden, then-chairman of the Judiciary Committee and Delaware senator, in which Biden said that in a presidential election year the Senate should “not consider holding hearings until after the election. Instead, it would be our pragmatic conclusion that once the political season is under way, and it is, action on a Supreme Court nomination must be put off until after the election campaign is over.”
In response, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused McConnell of taking his cues from Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. On the day of Scalia’s death, Trump told a debate audience that the Senate should “delay, delay, delay.”

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders praises Pope Francis in a new video interview with the Canadian Catholic television network Salt + Light, calling the pontiff a socialist like himself and lauding his critique of the global market system.
Sanders, who spoke to the network back in September during the pope’s visit to the U.S., also says Francis is having a “profound impact” on people all over the world.
“I think what the pope has done, in a very bold way … is raise the issue of the worship of money, the idolatry of money, and to say maybe that’s not what human life should be about,” says the Democrat. “That is a very, very radical critique of the hyper-capitalist system, world system, that we’re living in today.”

The Clinton attack on Bernie Sanders regarding his past activism during the civil rights era is just so typical of how these people run their campaigns. Now, a lot of folks probably thought that PBO’s campaigns might have raised the bar a little, that candidates would see that voters want less of these attacks and more substance, that you don’t need to drag the opponent through the mud to win.
But the Clintons don’t get that. They have always wanted to fire the first shot. So, in this case, they can’t just talk about Hillary’s “popularity” with black voters, it somehow has to be about Bernie Sanders. So they work overtime to create the perception that Bernie Sanders has lied about his past activism and wasn’t an activist at all during the civil rights era. They try to turn him into a joke, someone to be laughed at and ridiculed and dismissed.
And this is what they do time after time. They make the assumption that the opponent is as dirty as they are and they must be the first to attack.
So what have we here? A decent, well meaning man was attacked for telling the truth about something good that he did a long time ago. Does it matter? Well, I grew up in the Confederacy during the civil rights era. I can’t name a single white activist, not even one ever crossed my path. White folks were scared, that’s all I remember. So, yes, it really does say something about Bernie, in my opinion, something very good about his character.

Carson: Obama Was ‘Raised White,’ But I’ve Seen ‘What Real Racism Is’ (AUDIO)

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson said President Barack Obama was “raised white,” whereas Carson has “had a chance to see what real racism is” in a Politico podcast published Tuesday morning.
“He’s an ‘African’ American. He was, you know, raised white,” Carson told Politico as he waited for the results of the South Carolina primary on Saturday. “I mean, like most Americans, I was proud that we broke the color barrier when he was elected, but he didn’t grow up like I grew up.”
Carson said Obama’s experience as a young man was simply different than his own.
“Many of his formative years were spent in Indonesia. So, for him to, you know, claim that, you know, he identifies with the experience of black Americans, I think, is a bit of a stretch,” he said.
The world-renowned surgeon does not often bring up race on the campaign trail, and has called for Americans to “deemphasize race.”
“Remember now, I’ve been around for 64 years, you know. I’ve had a chance to see what real racism is,” he said.
Carson told Politico that he hasn’t experienced racism from the Republican Party. Then, when asked to recount his last experience with “real racism,” Carson said he just had to look to the left and progressives.
“I think the way that I’m treated by the left is racism. They assume because you’re black, you have to think a certain way,” he added.

A seven-month, $220 million surge of spending on behalf of mainstream Republican candidates has yielded a primary battle dominated by Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, two candidates reviled by most of the party’s leading donors.
Now, as they approach a pivotal and expensive stage of the campaign, the two insurgent candidates — who have won the first three contests — appear to be in the best position financially to compete in the 11 states that will vote on Super Tuesday, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday.
Mr. Cruz is the best financed candidate in the Republican race, beginning February with $13.6 million in cash on hand. Mr. Trump, a billionaire, has raised millions of dollars from small donors and lent himself millions more, including nearly $5 million in January. He paid out more than $11.5 million that month, the most sustained spending of his presidential bid so far.

With Donald Trump having already cruised in New Hampshire and South Carolina, it’s difficult to see him as anything but the current frontrunner. The question is who’ll be his principal rival as the field narrows and the race enters the next phase.
Rubio, pointing to the Republican establishment’s gushing affections, believes he’s the one for the job. Cruz, meanwhile, points to his actual performances in the early nominating contests – he won Iowa, defeated Rubio in New Hampshire, and is one of only two candidates to finish in the top three in each of the contests thus far – while making the case for himself.
This is bound to go on for a while, but don’t overlook the significance of campaign financing. The New York Times has a good piece on this today.

When the news broke on Twitter a few days ago that Doc McStuffins was getting a new sibling, the kids and I couldn’t be more excited! Yes, Doc McStuffins is a big deal in our house – we love Doc, Lambie, and the whole gang!
Doc McStuffins will become a big sister again, this time through the miracle of adoption! On Friday, March 4, Disney Junior will kick off a month long series of Doc McStuffins episodes about adoption. They will tackle topics like how to burp a baby and change dirty diapers to emotional insecurities siblings may face when a new baby or child joins the family.
I can’t help but wonder, what will the new baby McStuffins name be? Will it be a boy or a girl? We look forward to finding out.

GOP to Kasich: Get out
Allies of Marco Rubio want him to step aside for their candidate.

FAIRFAX, Va. — The Republican establishment has a message for John Kasich: get out, and get out of Marco Rubio’s way.
A string of elected officials, GOP insiders and prominent donors officially threw their support behind Rubio on Monday, calling him their last chance to take down Donald Trump. Their statements had another common theme. Some explicitly called for Kasich to quit, while others sent the same message by saying the Ohio governor’s ongoing presence is holding Rubio back.
“If at some point John were to decide not to go forward with his campaign, Marco would be the primary beneficiary of that decision,” former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told POLITICO after his official Rubio endorsement. “It’s not for me or anyone else to say when John should stay in or get out but … John’s decision to stay in or get out could have a marked impact on the race.”
This is not what Kasich had in mind: He had hoped that if he could be the last governor standing, his record and experience would persuade party power brokers to unite behind him in a challenge to Trump and Ted Cruz. Pushing that point, Kasich’s campaign issued a statement after Jeb Bush dropped out declaring Kasich winner of the “governor’s bracket.”
Kasich’s theory proved true: Bush’s demise did precipitate a unifying push within the establishment — toward Rubio.

Samantha Bee: Don’t be fooled by ‘moderate’ John Kasich — he wants ‘to control our baby ovens’

Samantha Bee opened Full Frontal on Monday by debunking Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s attempt to bill himself as a “moderate” contender for the Republican presidential nomination.
“GOP, take a closer look at John Kasich. Because while these other chumps make empty promises to do awful stuff, the so-called moderate gets awful stuff done,” Bee said.
She showed footage of Kasich — who has already pledged support behind a bill to defund Planned Parenthood — squirming when pressed on his stance on abortion by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, saying only that Roe v. Wade “sort of” legalized abortion.
“All the other Supreme Court decisions apply to everyone, but Roe v. Wade only gives rights to women who don’t live in states run by a governor on a stealth mission to control our baby ovens,” she said.
The reason people outside of Ohio don’t hear about his positions, she explained, was because they are slipped into bigger budget bills, which obscures statements of support like the one Kasich got from Ohio Right to Life, which gushed that “no candidate running for president” has done more to support its agenda.
