Everyone knows how happy this makes me…
More than anything else – as far as I’m concerned, this couple… their marriage, their two beautiful daughters…their deep love, passion, bond, and devotion to each other…the family and life they’ve built together – that for me is the singular most important and sacred thing…to be fiercely and unapologetically protected….before – and above and beyond all else…
And even as I hear and read random folks cum supporters brazenly, presumptuously and arrogantly already making and committing the President to *their* post-presidency plans for him – the First Lady’s husband, I can’t help but shake my head at the many crass liberties – and the many ways, a political life allows deluded ‘supporters’ to intrude upon a woman’s marriage and family…
This has to be one of my very favorite speeches of the President’s…here he clearly lays out his priorities in life…And until he shares otherwise…I take the President fully at his word – that his wife and their two daughters are the absolute most important things to him…Not any of the other stuff some of his supporters – many of whom aren’t married or in committed relationships by the way – who insist otherwise… and are oh so quick – and prone to willfully disregarding, dismissing and outrightly disrespecting a black woman, wife and mother – and her marriage and family – even as they assume that their one vote and vocal social media support, somehow now empowers and automatically bestows upon them, decision-making rights – arbitrary and otherwise – and all the other the rights normally reserved and exclusively for his wife –
So for all those who willfully seek to forget – or pretend not to care or notice, the President reminds everyone in his commencement speech at Morehouse College and in the the body of this Father’s day speech, that in the end, it’s all about family – “…But I will tell you this: Everything else is unfulfilled if we fail at family, if we fail at that responsibility…”
But more importantly, his reminder for the too quick to forget…that this journey is not just his, it’s very much his wife, the First Lady’s too…
just lovely!!
