Her other films include The Owl and the Pussycat, The Way We Were, and A Star Is Born, for which she received her second Academy Award, composing music for the love theme “Evergreen”, the first woman to be honored as a composer. With the release of Yentl in 1983, Streisand became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film. The film won an Oscar for Best Score and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Musical; Streisand received the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, the first (and to date only) woman to win that award.
The RIAA and Billboard recognize Streisand as holding the record for the most top-ten albums of any female recording artist: a total of 33 since 1963. According to Billboard, Streisand holds the record for the female with the most number one albums(10). Billboard also recognizes Streisand as the greatest female of all time on its Billboard 200 chart and one of the greatest artists of all time on its Hot 100 chart. Streisand is the only recording artist to have a number-one album in each of the last six decades, having released 53 Gold albums, 31 Platinum albums, and 14 Multi-Platinum albums in the United States.

There’s a point I wanted to address about the GOP primaries and the Trump phenomenon that connects up with my piece this morning (“Lust for Destruction”) and an earlier post on the GOP implosion and the concept of ‘technical debt’. I was listening to a CPAC roundtable late last week (televised, I wasn’t there) where the panelists, including The Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes, discussed the basic division in the GOP today: between people who feel the party establishment has betrayed them and those who do not.
I could dig up polls that substantiate this. But there’s abundant public opinion data confirming this division. The only surprise is how abruptly and destructively it’s played out in this primary process. But it is worth unpacking just what this means. We can do a deep interpretation that places this sense of betrayal in the declining economic prospects for many middle class Republican voters or the broader climate of ethnic and cultural transformation in the country. But at least nominally it’s not about either one of those things.
The betrayal is that the GOP promised it would destroy Obama’s presidency (end it in 2012, defang it before and after) and turn back the various things he’s done to damage the country and ‘transform’ it. But let’s remember that Republicans played a high stakes game of brinksmanship in 2011, threatening to default on the national debt if President Obama didn’t comply with various demands, an event totally without precedent in more than two centuries of American history. There was the Cruz government shutdown in 2013 to attempt to force yet another showdown over Obamacare. There was the successful effort to kill immigration reform in 2013. There’s the current refusal to even receive the President’s nomination to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, at the beginning of the fourth year of his term – again, totally unprecedented in American history. (We had serial rejections in the mid-19th century, never a refusal even to consider a nomination.) And these are only some of the most high stakes examples.

The fight over President Obama’s eventual Supreme Court nominee could get personal for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.
One of names being floated as a possible pick is someone who Ryan calls family: D.C. District Court . Connected by marriage, Jackson’s husband, Patrick Jackson, is the twin brother of Ryan’s brother-in-law William Jackson.
Ryan even testified on Brown’s behalf when she was nominated to the district court in 2012, offering his “unequivocal” endorsement of her qualifications in recommending her for the bench.
“Our politics may differ, but my praise for Ketanji’s intellect, for her character, for her integrity is unequivocal,” Ryan said at her December 2012 nomination hearing. “She’s an amazing person, and I favorably recommend her consideration.”

Why the GOP establishment should stop worrying and embrace Ted Cruz

Marco Rubio, the Republican establishment’s golden boy/fallback position, is floundering. If he doesn’t prevail in the winner-take-all Florida primary next Tuesday — and he’s currently trailing there by 15-20 percent — it may really be just a two-man race, between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.
That would leave GOP elites in a position where their only chance at stopping a candidate they find terrifying is a candidate they find loathsome.
I’m not going to argue that Ted Cruz is a great option for the GOP. But between him and Trump, it shouldn’t even be a close call. In fact, many of the things they hate about Cruz would be completely irrelevant if he were to become president, or even their party’s nominee.

After seven Democratic presidential candidate debates, some common threads become obvious. It’s hard not to notice, for example, that both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are adept debaters who know how to use these events to their advantage. Both are relentlessly on message. Both have loyal and enthusiastic supporters who are absolutely convinced that their candidate won the debate beyond a shadow of a doubt.
But while it may be difficult to form a consensus about who won last night’s debate in Flint, Michigan, identifying who lost is easy: the Republican presidential candidates.
Even die-hard political junkies can be forgiven for feeling a degree of debate fatigue. There have been 18 such gatherings this cycle – 11 Republican and 7 Democratic – and last night’s event came just four days after the most recent GOP showdown. For those covering the election closely, it can be a bit much (especially realizing there are two more debates this week).
But the proximity of the Republican and Democratic debates also created an opportunity to compare not only the candidates against their intra-party rivals, but also each party’s field of candidates against the other. And on this front, as the Huffington Post’s Jonathan Cohn noted, the GOP has reason to feel embarrassed.
[T]he debate was also deeply substantive – an argument between two seasoned politicians who have obviously given a lot of thought to the problems facing America, and what they would do about them.
The contrast to the Republican debate from last week, with its juvenile insults, could not have been more stark. Instead of discussing penis length, Clinton and Sanders argued over the sizes of their respective infrastructure programs.
In short, both Clinton and Sanders looked ready for prime time.
The point wasn’t lost on Clinton, who declared towards the end of last night’s debate, “I just want to make one point. You know, we have our differences. And we get into vigorous debate about issues, but compare the substance of this debate with what you saw on the Republican stage last week.”

For months, one of the few constants in the race for the Republican presidential nomination has been the race to be the anti-Trump – Donald Trump has dominated for nearly the entire process, and his GOP rivals have fought tooth and nail to be his principal rival.
As of last night, the race to be “the other guy” appears to be effectively over.
In the Republican race, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz claimed the first two victories of the night, winning in Kansas and Maine, while Donald Trump finished second in both. Cruz was the runner-up in close races that Trump won later in the evening in the Louisiana primary and Kentucky caucus. Marco Rubio and John Kasich finished well behind the two winners in today’s contests.
Heading into the weekend’s races, polling was scarce, making it harder to set expectations, but by any measure, Cruz had an excellent night, dominating in Kansas – where the party establishment rallied behind Rubio – and posting a double-digit win in Maine, the Texan’s first victory in the Northeast.
Trump won in Louisiana and Kentucky, though by slim margins over the second-place Cruz.
There were lingering questions about the kind of lessons to be learned by Super Saturday. If Cruz won a race or two, would it be because of those state’s unique constituencies – Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum also won their races in 2008 and 2012, respectively, even as a dominant frontrunner emerged – or because of his genuine strength relative to Trump?
With easy two victories and two narrow second-place finishes, I’m inclined to give Cruz quite a bit of credit (this is especially true in Louisiana, where he narrowed the gap at the very end). Cruz’s candidacy appears to be growing genuinely stronger at a key phase in the race, even as his rivals grow weaker. The Texas senator wanted to create a two-man race and as of last night, that’s exactly what he appears to have done.

The “he” is President Obama. The “we” is the Republican Party. And it is not coincidental that as the former pushes toward the end of his second term, the latter is coming apart.
The GOP is an incoherent mess. Republican-on-Republican rhetorical violence has become commonplace. Party members find themselves mulling whether to break away and form a third party or unite behind a coarse, blustering bigot whose scapegoating and strongman rhetoric has Holocaust survivors compar-ing him to Hitler.
The situation is so objectively and transparently grim that many on the right no longer even bother to spin it. “I’m a lifelong Republican,” tweeted historian Max Boot last week, “but [Donald] Trump surge proves that every bad thing Democrats have ever said about GOP is basically true.”
“It would be terrible,” wrote Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens last week, “to think that the left was right about the right all these years.”
But it can be argued that Trump is less the cause than an inevitable effect of the party’s looming disintegration. It can be argued that what’s really destroying the Republican Party is the Republican Party.

Possible Supreme Court Pick Championed Black History Museum

WASHINGTON — To remind him of some of the work done by potential Supreme Court nominee Robert L. Wilkins, all President Barack Obama has to do is look down the street from the White House to the nearly completed National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Wilkins was instrumental in advocating for the museum, which is set to open in September, quitting his job as a public defender to push for it and later serving on a presidential commission whose work led to its creation.
Now a judge on the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Wilkins has credentials that would make him an attractive nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat of Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last month. A native of Muncie, Indiana, who was raised by a single mother, he graduated from Harvard Law School and spent a decade as a public defender in Washington.
As a young lawyer, Wilkins also became known for his role in a landmark lawsuit about racial profiling. The class-action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union came about after Wilkins and three family members were stopped by a Maryland State Police trooper in 1992 while driving back from his grandfather’s funeral and detained for a search by a drug-sniffing dog.

Conrad Black: Don’t underestimate Donald. He will win

It is with great regret that I take public issue with my colleague John Robson, a columnist and editorial writer for the National Post, in this case over his comments on Donald Trump in this newspaper on Monday. John completely missed the point of the Trump candidacy. Donald Trump polled extensively last year and confirmed his suspicion that between 30 and 40 per cent of American adults, cutting across all ethnic, geographic, and demographic lines, were angry, fearful and ashamed at the ineptitude of their federal government.
Americans, Trump rightly concluded, could not abide a continuation in office of those in both parties who had given them decades of shabby and incompetent government: stagnant family incomes, the worst recession in 80 years, stupid wars that cost scores of thousands of casualties and trillions of dollars and generated a humanitarian disaster, serial foreign policy humiliations, and particularly the absence of a border to prevent the entry of unlimited numbers of unskilled migrants, and trade deals that seemed only to import unemployment with often defective goods. I was one of those who thought at the outset that Trump was giving it a shot, and that if it didn’t fly it would at least be a good brand-building exercise.

One of my favorite scenes was between Spratt and Denker
And how the Dowager Countess read Spratt’s advice column and starts laughing while Denker just stands there, looking confused. Denker should have known that the Dowager is anything but predictable! LOL
What I found fascinating was the Dowager’s role as the Matriarch, Fellowes weaved her POWERFUL influence on the family and all those around her very nicely in this episode.
Never underestimate the power and significance of WOMEN!
Daisy and Andrew? Loved how they started bringing modern technology into that era, a blow dryer, Anna worked magic on Daisy.
