Munger: State leaders’ pay will be delayed by budget stalemate
Illinois legislators and elected statewide officials will have to wait in line with everyone else to get paid by the state, Comptroller Leslie Geissler Munger announced Sunday.
The state is paying its bills about two months late, so Illinois’ 177 legislators, as well at the governor, lieutenant governor, comptroller, attorney general, secretary of state and treasurer can expect to wait that long to get payed.
Their combined compensation totals about $1.3 million a month, Munger said during a news conference held in the otherwise-vacant Thompson Center in the Loop.
Munger said she did not consult with Gov. Bruce Rauner or any other state Republican leaders about the maneuver.
“This is a decision I made on my own as the comptroller, and we informed the governor’s staff just before we came in here,” she said.
While Munger didn’t consult with Rauner, her move will apparently have little personal impact on the governor, a multimillionaire who cut his gubernatorial salary to $1.

A better lakefront vision for the Lucas Museum
Sometimes the receiver actually catches the Hail Mary pass. Here’s hoping Chicago catches this one.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is pushing a new, last-minute solution to where to put George Lucas’ $400 million museum before the movie mogul finally gives up and dumps Chicago for a more cooperative city. Emanuel wants to tear down McCormick Place East, a convention hall that never should have been built on the lakefront anyway, and put the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art there.
The mayor’s proposal is full of question marks about funding, design and commerce, and Lucas had better create a true wonder of a museum if Chicago hands him such precious turf. But the new location would be a big improvement over City Hall’s first proposed site for the museum, a dreary stretch of parking lots south of Soldier Field that lakefront preservationists insist could someday be beautiful green space.
The mayor’s new plan also would rid the lakefront of a behemoth of building, sometimes derided as Chicago’s Berlin Wall, that destroys the city’s skyline from the east, blocks views of the lake from the west, and physically divides the lakefront — the north from the south — in a subliminally racist way. Or so it has always seemed to us.
What we have here is a chance to upgrade and unify Chicago’s celebrated lakefront. Die-hard architectural preservationists (who think McCormick Place East is a gem) and lakefront protectionists (who oppose almost all new construction) can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
On Friday, the Friends of the Park signaled they could get on board with the idea, or at least might not oppose it, saying they were “in conversation with the city.” That would eliminate the biggest hurdle for City Hall.

Ted Cruz’s Conservatism: The Pendulum Swings Consistently Right

On perhaps the defining issue of the 2016 Republican primary, Senator Ted Cruz falls well to the right of Ronald Reagan, who supported granting legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants.
He opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest, and has called for a federal amendment that would allow states to avoid performing or recognizing same-sex marriages.
He wants to return to the gold standard, abolish the Internal Revenue Service and create a tax structure simple enough for Americans to file on postcards.
He has criticized Donald J. Trump on deportation policy. From the right.
Throughout his Senate career, Republican opponents have moved to cast Mr. Cruz as a master of the ill-considered — a “wacko bird,” as Senator John McCain of Arizona once called him — whose seemingly reckless pursuits were thought to place him well outside the mainstream.
Yet a close reading of Mr. Cruz’s policy prescriptions, influences and writings over two decades, combined with interviews with conservative intellectual leaders and Cruz allies, suggest two powerful truths about the man who might yet assume the mantle of modern conservatism.
He would be the most conservative presidential nominee in at least a half-century, perhaps to the right of Barry Goldwater, testing the electoral limits of a personal ideology he has forged meticulously since adolescence.
And he has, more effectively than almost any politician of his generation, anticipated the rightward tilt of the Republican Party of today, grasping its conservatism even as colleagues dismissed him as a fringe figure.
Now, even Mr. Cruz’s staunchest Republican enemies tend to criticize him most forcefully on tactics — lamenting his leading role in the 2013 government shutdown, for instance — but not on substance, where they have generally arrived at equivalent positions.

Chef Hugh Acheson is on a Mission to Save Home Economics

Almeta Tulloss strides between two rows of school desks and attracts the eyes of more than a dozen eighth-grade students with a commanding voice: “If you were an entrepreneur and were going to make a product with carrots, why would you not throw away the carrot tops?”
She hopes the question will prompt students to think about food waste at home and how to make the most of their food dollar, as well as how to problem solve like a business owner.
“There’s a thing in America where we’re not taught to be good, smart consumers,” Tulloss tells Modern Farmer. With the help of a highly-regarded chef, she plans to change that trend across the country. And she’s starting with a handful of classrooms in Athens, Ga.
Tulloss is the director of Seed Life Skills, a new charity founded and led by chef Hugh Acheson, of Top Chef fame. It seeks to redirect the dwindling relevance of home economics education in public schools. In the race to make kids career-ready in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, home ec advocates argue that teaching students to cook and care for themselves has been left behind.
While many have bemoaned the disappearance of home economics in schools, the class itself was never cut, only rebranded as Family and Consumer Science in 1994. With that distinction made, the difference between home economics taught to students in the 1950s and what they’re taught today is clear: Rather than learning to bake from scratch, understand food safety, and balance family finances, students instead read Betty Crocker boxes, Acheson says.

The same folks who view any legitimate query about Hillary and her record as ‘sexism’…have no qualms personally attacking Bernie using the vilest forms of ageism…forgetting of course that Hillary is only just barely ‘younger’…And Hillary is the one who’s had serious health problems – not Bernie…

Hundreds of New York…voters to file suit…after claiming their party affiliation mysteriously changed
More than 200 outraged New York voters have joined a lawsuit claiming the party affiliation on their voter registration changed without their consent. The voters say they are unfairly being shut out of Tuesday’s primary.
The suit, to be filed Monday in Brooklyn, calls for New York to be an open primary state, allowing anyone to vote in primaries regardless of party affiliation.

Numerous voters involved in the suit claim they looked up their voter registrations after the deadline passed to find that their party affiliation had changed from Democratic or Republican to “Not affiliated” or “Independent,” a switch that will bar them from voting in either primary.

She called Nassau Board of Elections and they told her that she had filled out a form in September change her party affiliation and sent it in October, but she claims she never did that. She’d be a first-time voter.

Fabrizio Milito, another voter who signed up with the suit, registered as a Democrat in 2009 and voted in local elections as recent as last year.
The 25-year-old construction worker from Bayville, L.I., noticed his registration now says “not affiliated.”
“I got really upset and I went to call them (the Nassau board of elections) and even the guy on the phone was pretty baffled,” Melito said. “He told me I must have changed it but I never did.”
Some voters involved in the lawsuit — who are primarily Democratic — also claim they their voter registration had been canceled altogether.

“…SAN FRANCISCO — As Hillary Clinton heads into the first Democratic debate Tuesday, some of her top donors and allies are feeling encouraged for the first time in months.
But they’re also filled with deep anxiety about Joe Biden’s potential candidacy, a prospect that stands to sow the seeds of division just as they see Clinton moving beyond the email controversy to a place where her personality and policy command are breaking through. Those conflicting feelings were on display at a private dinner in San Francisco on Wednesday night, where megadonor Susie Tompkins Buell held court before a group of about 15 major party donors and Clinton loyalists at Sam’s Restaurant, an old-school seafood joint where the waiters wear tuxedos, the sourdough bread is so legendary women cave in to carbs, and each table is curtained off for privacy.
The group — which included former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm; major Obama bundler-turned-Clinton-supporter Wade Randlett; former ambassador to Hungary Eleni Kounalakis; Obama bundler Steve Spinner; Democratic fundraiser Mary Pat Bonner; and Steve Silberstein, a major Bay Area donor, and others — lifted their glasses to David Brock, the right-wing-hitman-turned-pro-Clinton crusader, and McCarthy, and drank.
Buell, who over the past 10 years has given $25 million to progressive groups and candidates, shook her head at the prospect of a Biden candidacy.
“Why would he want to go out on such a negative?” she asked her friends. Buell has a complicated history with the Obama administration: she had a difficult time coming around to Obama in 2008 after he defeated Clinton in the primary, and refused to support his 2012 reelection, saying she was disappointed in how he was dealing with environmental issues.
Another supporter at the table said she was concerned that “if Clinton loses New Hampshire and Iowa, Biden will choose to get in,” while others expressed disgust at Biden’s appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which they said look staged, and like he was launching an opportunistic campaign out of grief. “It makes me out of my mind,” one dinner guest complained.
“At the end of the day, he doesn’t do it, he knows how disruptive it will be to our ability to win,” California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom told POLITICO before the dinner. He noted that he was so close with the Biden family that he named his son Hunter, the name of Biden’s younger son.
The dinner, attended by a POLITICO reporter, was put together in honor of Brock, who was in town for a talk about his new book, “Killing the Messenger: The Right-Wing Plot to Derail Hillary and Hijack Your Government.” He sat across from Buell and her husband, Mark
“Who wants tequila?” Buell, one of Clinton’s closest friends, asked her guests, taking a survey of hands and ordering a round of tequila and sodas for the group. She then lifted her glass to propose a toast: “to David Brock and Kevin McCarthy!”
Twelve hours later, McCarthy would announce he was dropping out of the race for speaker of the House. The focus on Biden — and McCarthy’s remarks — obscured the relative absence of discussion on the candidate currently leading Clinton in the polls in New Hampshire — Bernie Sanders. When the Vermont senator’s name surfaced, the group of stalwart Clintonites expressed confusion over how the 74-year-old pol has inspired enthusiasm among young voters, even young women. “Youth like anything different that feels rebellious,” Buell said. “They’re naive.”
Despite the tensions of the race, the group was in a positive mood. They were already celebrating McCarthy’s comment — a moment they saw as a turning point in what has been a brutal six months for those deeply invested, literally, in Clinton’s campaign and her future.
After months of frustration over the trajectory of Clinton’s campaign, Buell’s dinner guests said they felt a positive shift in the primary dynamics in the 10 days leading up to the first Democratic presidential debate.
They even discussed plans for the general election, with Brock telling the group there would be a need for a “Republicans for Hillary” group to be formed after the Democratic National Convention.
“Starting July 1, it’s game on,” said a top Obama donor who’s well-connected in the White House and is supporting Clinton this time around. “Barack and Michelle are going to be the dogs of hell unleashed on the Republican Party. They’re dying to do it for someone else. He will do what he does best and he knows where to be deployed.”
Mingling with guests before Brock’s book talk, Buell waved off nervous supporters who approached to ask how Clinton is holding up under the pressure.
“She’s fine, she’s fine. I just sent flowers to her home. I wrote, ‘we love you, Val,’” she laughed, a reference to the patient barkeep Clinton played last week on “Saturday Night Live.”
Yet in a sign of the unsettling effect Biden could have on the Democratic primary, Gill and Miller told POLITICO they had donated $50,000 to the Draft Biden campaign, and that Miller had stepped down from the board of Correct the Record, one of Brock’s pro-Clinton groups, in anticipation of a potential run by Biden. But they said they planned to continue giving money to Clinton, as well.
At a book event held at the Century Club of California, Buell, who is a major donor to Brock’s web of organizations, bragged about how much Bill Clinton enjoyed Brock’s latest book, despite a harsh review from The New York Times dismissing it as “an extended press release.”
After receiving a copy from Brock in the Hamptons last August, “Bill stayed up all night and read it, and called him in the morning and thanked him and said it’s the best thing that’s been written about this,” Buell boasted to the audience. “I don’t know what we would have done if David hadn’t done what he has done.”
“You’ve been at the water cooler,” Brock said. “This book is for Hillary supporters to be able to talk about these issues, whether it’s Benghazi, or that she was a do-nothing secretary of state, or email, email, email, or she’s too inauthentic, or she’s a bad candidate — I refute it. We can’t allow this garbage to stand in the way.” The crowd cheered.
But some who attended his event last week still harbored concerns.
“What I worry about is women who are my age, 67, pro-Hillary all the way the first time, and who now say, ‘I just don’t believe her,’” said JoAnn Loulan, development director at the Progressive Women Silicon Valley. “I worry about Hillary supporters that aren’t going to vote for her,” she said.
“When we get to that general election, given the stakes, people are going to get the stakes — protecting the Supreme Court, protecting and expanding on President Obama’s legacy,” he said. “It’s going to get exciting, and people are going to get excited.”
Brock compared the situation now to the 1990s, when the Clintons were mired in scandals from Whitewater to Monica Lewinsky to impeachment.

Jack Lew nears decision to keep Hamilton on front of $10 bill, put a woman on the $20

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is expected to announce this week that Alexander Hamilton’s face will remain on the front of the $10 bill and a woman will replace Andrew Jackson on the face of the $20 bill, a senior government source told CNN on Saturday.
Lew announced last summer that he was considering redesigning the $10 bill to include the portrait of a woman. The decision to make the historic change at the expense of Hamilton drew angry rebukes from fans of the former Treasury Secretary. The pro-Hamilton movement gained steam after the smash success of the hip-hop Broadway musical about his life this year.
Those pressures led Lew to determine that Hamilton should remain on the front of the bill. Instead, a mural-style depiction of the women’s suffrage movement — including images of leaders such as Susan B. Anthony — will be featured on the back of the bill.
A Treasury spokesman declined to comment on the pending changes. But Lew hinted that a decision could come this week.
“When we started this conversation not quite a year ago, it wasn’t clear to me that millions of Americans were going to weigh in with their ideas,” he told CNBC. “We’re not just talking about one bill. We’re talking about the $5, the $10, and the $20. We’re not just talking about one picture on one bill. We’re talking about using the front and the back of the bill to tell an exciting set of stories.”

“So many prominent Americans, many of whom we celebrate for their progressive ideas and activism, many of whom had very good intentions, subscribed to assimilationist thinking that has also served up racist beliefs about Black inferiority,” Kendi writes. Visionary Vintage Children’s Book Celebrates Gender Equality, Ethnic Diversity, and Space Exploration
For all their immeasurable delight, children’s books also have a serious cultural responsibility — they capture young minds and plant in them the seeds that blossom into beliefs about what is socially acceptable, what is right and wrong, and what is possible. This weight of possibility is both a blessing and a burden, given the terrible track record children’s books have of celebrating diversity — both ethnically and in terms of gender norms. Only 31 percent of children’s books feature female heroines, and even those consistently purvey limiting gender expectations; of the 3,200 children’s books published in 2013, a mere 93 were about black people. The ones that fully embrace cultural diversity or empower girls are few and far between, to say nothing of those rare specimens that get girls excited about science.
