Welcome to the West Wing Week, your guide to everything that’s happening at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and beyond. This week, the Vice President rounded out his trip overseas with a visit to both the Holy See and the Eternal City — and the First Lady headed to Los Angeles and Missouri. The President bid farewell to the current class of White House interns, hosted some of the biggest names in jazz, honored the teacher of the year & Cinco de Mayo, traveled to Flint, Michigan, and gave his final toast and roast at the annual White House Correspondence Dinner. That’s April 29th to May 5th or…”But Is It?”

Texas children tied in backyard had hundreds of scars, injuries: police

Two young children found chained and leashed outside a San Antonio home had suffered hundreds of scars and injuries from months, perhaps years, of abuse, a sheriff’s official said Friday.

Doctors who treated the children after they were found April 29 determined they had old injuries indicating a long period of abuse. One of them also was suffering from hypothermia and had a broken arm resulting from the way she was tied to a garage door using a dog leash, Bexar County sheriff’s spokesman James Keith said.

Authorities initially said the children were 2 and 3 years old, but Keith says they may be a year older.

“Unfortunately, child abuse is a major problem here, and in this case we’re just glad we were able to find these children before any further harm could occur to them,” Keith said, explaining that deputies went to the home after a neighbor called about a child who could be heard crying for hours.

In Lucas fight, parks group stands firm in its mission

Branded “no friend of Chicago” and labeled as a group not to be trusted, Friends of the Parks has created many high-profile enemies this week with its opposition to locating the Lucas Museum along the city’s lakefront.

In standing firm against proposals to build a museum for “Star Wars” creator George Lucas’ art collection on the Lake Michigan shore, the group, which has sued to block the project, reaffirmed its mission to advocate for a free, open and clear lakefront.

That position has put the museum’s future in Chicago in deep peril. It has also cast a glaring spotlight on Friends of the Parks, the remaining barrier to a project promoted by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and one of the country’s most famous filmmakers.

Formed in 1975, Friends of the Parks is a nonprofit group dedicated to preserving and protecting the city’s parks and open spaces. Lois Weisberg, who became the longtime, influential cultural affairs commissioner of Chicago, was one of the founders.

US Military Academy Investigates Black Female Cadets For ‘Black Power’ Gesture In Photo

    Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

The US Military Academy, commonly known as West Point, launched an inquiry into a group of 16 black, female cadets set to graduate after they posed in a traditional group photo raising their fists – a gesture historically associated with black resistance.

The image prompted an investigation on 28 April to determine whether or not the women broke any rules, West Point spokesperson Lt Col Christopher Kasker said in a statement. Department of Defence guidelines prohibit soldiers and cadets from making political statements while in uniform or on military grounds.

Criticism of the gesture flooded social media streams accusing the women of aligning themselves with the Black Lives Matter movement, which rose to public consciousness after the high profile killings of unarmed black men by police officers.

Army Times, a weekly newspaper that serves active and retired US Armed Forces personnel, said that numerous readers sent in letters that the gesture was, in fact, in violation of the DOD guidelines.
