Ser Negro Es Hermoso Campaign Seeks to Teach Afro-Colombians That Black Is Beautiful
The city of Cartagena, Colombia, is 75 percent black, but only 35 percent of Afro-Colombians identify themselves as such.

When foreigners think of the country of Colombia, usually visions of drug-cartel bosses and Latin beauty queens with olive skin come to mind. Few foreigners know just how multicultural, and black, the country is. Colombia has the second-largest population of people of African descent in the Americas after Brazil—at least 5 million, according to the country’s census, but likely a far higher number.
“We all come on that same boat,” says Edwin Salcedo, an Afro-Colombian activist and communications consultant. Salcedo is referring to the hundreds of boats that carried at least 1 million captured Africans from the West Coast of Africa to the Colombian city of Cartagena—the largest slave port in the Spanish colonial empire.

Today Cartagena is a majority-black city with a population of more than 800,000 people. But this isn’t reflected in the census. The city is at least 75 percent Afro-Colombian, but only 35 percent of that group self-identifies as Afro-Colombian, Salcedo says. It is commonly believed that at least 25 percent of Colombia’s 48 million people are of African descent, but the census reflects only about 10 percent, or 5 million.

Former BET Host Jeff Johnson Has $5 Million to Convince Black Voters to Support Hillary Clinton
Jeff Johnson will be overseeing part of a $5.3 million budget as a consultant for Priorities USA, a Democratic super PAC supporting presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Former BET host and producer Jeff Johnson will be joining Democratic super PAC Priorities USA as a consultant, handling part of the group’s $5.3 million advertising budget focused on black and Hispanic markets, All Digitocracy reports.

Priorities USA is supporting Hillary Clinton for president, and Johnson, who is president of his Baltimore firm, JIJ Communications, will help direct the group’s efforts to appeal to black voters as Election Day approaches. According to the report, Priorities has committed to spending $5.3 million to reach black and Hispanic voters.

“We’re excited that Jeff is bringing his unique skills and expertise to the Priorities USA team,” Chief Strategist of Priorities USA Guy Cecil said in a statement. “Republicans have already spent $8 million attacking and distorting Hillary Clinton’s record, and bringing Jeff on is the latest in a series of steps Priorities is taking to gear up for a general election where we will aggressively draw a contrast between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.”

That’s all Jeff could wrestle out of this hustle…

That’s all you firewalls are worth…

And it’s a combined budget too…for black folks and Hispanics..

      LOL…

Why Successful Black Men in Brazil Won’t Marry Black Women

“Black is a slave. Black is not good,” said black Brazilian actress Polly Marinho, in explaining the thinking behind why interracial marriage is more common the higher up the socioeconomic ladder a black Brazilian goes.

    BY: KIRATIANA FREELON
    Posted: March 3 2016 11:24 AM

In 1965, Ebony magazine published a 10-page spread about Brazil with the headline, “Does Amalgamation Work in Brazil: Absorbing Negro Through Interracial Marriage Is Their Answer to the Race Problem.”

The top image in the article showed a black woman walking hand in hand down the street with a white man.

“Interracial couple walking hand in hand is not unusual,” the caption read. “But unless the dark girl is the boy’s cultural or economic superior, chances are they will never wed. Black and mulatto men marry white women to improve social status.”

Sadly, not much has changed in Brazil some five decades later.

The 2010 census in Brazil showed that out of all the women over 50 who had never had a spouse, a majority of them were “pretas,” a term commonly used to refer to dark-skinned black women. It’s also obvious to all Brazilians that once black Brazilian men attain a certain social status, they choose white women as their life partners. Brazil’s most famous soccer player, Pelé, has been married three times, but never to a black woman. Nearly all of Brazil’s top male samba singers are married to white women. A study conducted of high-level black Brazilian businessmen in 2011 found that out of the 50 interviewed, 49 were married to white women (pdf).

Black Brazilian actress Polly Marinho, 32, thinks this is a natural outcome in a country that values whiteness on television, in its magazines and in government.

“We are educated to think, like, that black is not beautiful. Black is a slave. Black is not good,” said Marinho, who recently starred in a popular television show on Brazil’s largest television network. “Let’s take, for example, a very famous black soccer player. When they want money, they want good things. A beautiful house. A Ferrari and a white, white, blue-eyed chick.”

Someone needed to travel all the way to Brazil to do this write-up for The Root…

      Really..

We are living in a country today where our own historic black FLOTUS is being subjected to the cruelest and most dehumanizing and disrespectful treatment by even some black folks – and even some who roam freely around her own husband’s Oval office and orbit…and only because of her darker skin…

A country that unquestionably values and elevates even a gold quarrying, extensively surgically augmented, former low rent lingerie ‘model’ from impoverished communist Eastern Europe, over and above the Princeton and Harvard educated first black FLOTUS who’s done everything the right and honorable way, and has succeeded and accomplished without short-cuts or compromising herself and her values…and against all odds in her own country that still intensely devalues her and treats her as a 3rd class citizen…

This Princeton and Harvard educated brilliant, gorgeous, insightful, caring, selfless, wise, sexy, confident and incredibly devoted, dedicated, genuine and unpretentious woman, wife, mother, daughter, First Lady and inspiring role model, is outrightly disrespected, trivialized and dismissed as if she doesn’t matter or count…

And there’s been hardly anyone out defending or protecting and fighting for her…even as everyone including some in, and affiliated with the White House – are quick to speak out, speak up and aggressively and effusively defend the honor of every other woman…

We live in a country today where even women will fall all over themselves fighting twitter battles for days, on behalf of the ‘handsome’ President with a ‘white mom’, but not for his black wife…

Where their daughters – the daughters she bore in her womb and labored 9 months each for – and still does to this day…the daughters her body, soul and spirit has taken a toll for….these 2 daughters are now rated ‘more beautiful’ and immediately elevated to idol status based entirely on how much more they look like their ‘handsome’ father…never mind that both girls are a perfect mix of both their parents…

Where there’s been a sustained and incredibly insidious effort to de-emphasize, trivialize and erase the black FLOTUS…not only personally, but in her official capacity as First Lady…and more importantly as Mrs Obama…

Words like ‘family’ are disrespectfully used to dismiss, replace, erase her as First Lady and Mrs… The woman who was once her husband’s superior at work, his love and life partner ..and always his equal at home…is suddenly reduced to not much more than just another random and extremely minimized blip…another random just happened to be there caricature, banished to the far back rows with random fans in the not so special section – and not even within sight of the V.I.P area…in the shining unfolding and telling of the historic President and his presidency…her husband of 24+ years …

A woman who although she’s the one who has made every sacrifice for, and invested her life in their daughters, has to be at the very minimum, slightly taken aback when even on Mothers Day – Mothers Day… it’s the ‘handsome’ President who gets praised and gushed over…He’s only after all great because of his white mother…and their beautiful and well-adjusted and well-raised daughters are just so precious thanks to him…and oh yes, their grandmother…

One has to wonder how this wife and fiercely protective black mother who sacrificed her own aspirations in support of her husband, must feel as she’s so brazenly de-emphasized and deleted – even as a mother…as the story of this historic presidency is re-written before our eyes…

In an extremely hostile world that deems black women unworthy of respect, love, chivalry…a world that devalues and freely and without retribution, disrespects black women – and has even taught them and their men to do the same to them…

How do we move on to talking about the experience of black women in Brazil, when right here at home…right now, our very own historic black First Lady is being dehumanized and insidiously deprived of even her full, rightful and sacred place as mother, by those who’ve worked hard to devalue and dismiss her not just as the wife, but the rightfully revered love and life partner and equal of the man she’s suffered, sacrificed, invested and intimately lived every last bit of this historic journey with…and long, long before it became as grand and as attractive as he and it now appears…

She alone has borne the brunt …she alone has the deep scars to show for all that she’s had to contend with and fight for and fight off…not in the least to protect herself, her sanity, her husband, their daughters, her marriage, her family….from the soulless vultures that never stop swarming..

…And yet, they want to convince you that she doesn’t matter…that she’s not relevant…and only because she knows who she is and what’s important and what matters most ultimately…

And she to their chagrin, she remains unrepentantly black …and won’t cower… or white-wash herself…metaphorically or literally ..

If only this treatment were applied fairly and honestly …and across the board..

As a party, we can’t pick and choose when we call out and block self-serving frauds…and when we fiercely support and play interference on their behalf…

We also have to make up our minds when we should applaud this sort of truth-telling …or when it’s been exacted only because there’s personal or political vendetta at play…

      I’m not a Grayson fan…but there’s something completely disingenuous at play here…

And it has nothing to do with integrity or honor or decency …and not even love of party or party fortunes in the elections..

We can’t in one breath tout our ‘higher purpose and high mind’ as a party and our seamless and open ‘democracy’ …and yet be as dirty and messy and dishonest and as underhanded and as vindictive and as corrupt as those god-awful republicans…(use of lower case r, deliberate…)…

It’s getting awfully hard to tell the difference between our party and theirs…

“I’m not stupid, Okay” – Trump tells British PM Cameron

    Source: Jerusalem Post

Presumptive US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he hopes to be able to work with British Prime Minister David Cameron in spite of Cameron calling the Republican candidate ‘stupid, divisive and wrong’ on his stance on Muslims.

“It looks like we’re not going to have a very good relationship. Who knows! I hope to have a good relationship with him but it sounds like he’s not willing to address the problem either,” Trump said in an interview with Piers Morgan, recorded on Friday and due to be aired in full on ITV on Monday.

“Well, number one I’m not stupid, Okay. I can tell you that, right now – just the opposite. Number two, in terms of divisive: I don’t think I’m a divisive person. I’m a unifier, unlike our president now (referring to President Barack Obama), I’m a unifier,” he added.

Florida Senate GOP Candidate Calls Obama An ‘Animal’
    May 14, 2016

WASHINGTON — Carlos Beruff, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Florida, repeatedly referred to President Barack Obama as an “animal” at a county GOP meeting on Thursday.

Addressing party faithful at a St. John’s County GOP gathering, Beruff accused Obama of destroying America and its military.

“Unfortunately, for seven and a half years this animal we call president, because he’s an animal, OK — seven and a half years, has surgically and with thought and very smart, intelligent manner, destroyed this country and dismantled the military under not one, not two, but three secretary of defenses,” he said. “And they’ve all written books about it.”

“Sooner or later, you’re going to find, this was a plan, he wants us to be just another country. I don’t want to be another country. I want to be the United States of America, the greatest country in the world,” he added, garnering a round of applause.

Beruff is one of five Republicans vying to replace retiring Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). A member of a South Florida water board with a real estate background, Beruff has been compared to both Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R), who endorsed the presumptive GOP nominee earlier this year.

Last month, Beruff called for a ban on travel that goes even further than Trump’s controversial proposal to block all Muslims from coming to the United States — banning all people from the Middle East from entering the country.

‘Not about bathrooms’: Critics decry North Carolina law’s lesser-known elements

    Source: Washington Post

DURHAM, N.C. — In this state where the modern bathroom wars began, some church and civil rights leaders have begun to spread the word that there’s plenty else to worry about in the controversial new law known formally as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act.

The law not only reverses a Charlotte ordinance that had extended some rights to gay and transgender people. It also prevents city and county governments from setting a minimum-wage standard for private employers and limits how people can sue for discrimination in state court. And it contains a provision allowing for remaining parts of the law to stand if others are struck down in court.

Those provisions, opponents say, are pernicious attempts to roll back rights, and they have been tucked into a bill that has a very different public face.

“This is really a devious bill that harms workers under the guise of regulating bathrooms,” said Harold Lloyd, a professor at Wake Forest University School of Law.

Corporate media is just reveling in the Trump/Clinton showdown and talking about it as though it is already in progress. I can’t hit the mute button fast enough whenever one of their faces pops up. Yet, this is a presidential election we’re talking about, not Senator, not House Representative, not state legislature, not mayor, not dog catcher. This is real, and corporate media has been just completely irresponsible and reckless with our democracy. Because that is what we are talking about here, democracy, or what is left of it. And, as bad as they are, they do have the responsibility to report the news in a fair and unbiased manner, and to keep people informed, not manipulated and propagandized or denied the truth either through outright lies or omissions of important information.

Corporate media wants this showdown with complete disregard for the consequences. And who suffers? Well, the same folks who always suffer, those who do not have the resources to wait out four or eight years of bad governance at the federal level. So many people never recovered from the two Bush administrations and never will.
