Native Americans’ daily lives in early-1900s Arizona

PHOENIX – Edward Curtis‘ portraits of Native Americans living in Arizona was the race-defining iconography for the Western world in the 20th century.

Curtis spent 20 years documenting the indigenous people of North America, taking nearly 40,000 photos of more than 80 tribes. He made thousands of wax-cylinder recordings of native songs and languages, many of which can still be heard thanks to preservation efforts by Indiana University.

Arizona was the backdrop of some of Curtis’ most-recognizable work. Some of his photos even hang in the Arizona Capitol Museum.

The Library of Congress online archives now house the entire 20-voume “The North American Indian” series Curtis shot during his lifelong fascination with the Native American West.

    “…WALNUT CREEK — A year ago, four John Muir Medical Center doctors told Mohammad Meshkin his daughter was brain-dead. The hospital refused to operate on Anahita Meshkin’s infected, fractured hip because it said it would not be ethical to treat a dead person.

    The Walnut Creek facility told the father they wanted to pull the plug on the then-29-year-old woman, who had been in a coma since 2007 after suffering a massive seizure while battling anorexia. But he wasn’t ready to give up.

    Before the hospital could stop treatment, Meshkin called the lawyer for Jahi McMath’s family, Chris Dolan, who along with another attorney filed a temporary restraining order May 1, 2015, to block the hospital from withholding Anahita’s treatment. Hours later, two UC San Francisco School of Medicine neurologists and professors conducted an independent test — ordered by a Contra Costa Superior Court judge — and determined Anahita was not brain-dead after all.

    “She does not meet the clinical criteria for brain death,” wrote physicians Wade Smith and Andrew Josephson, according to court records. They noted that she moved her head and elbow when they pinched her hands.

    “You were all trying to kill her, and she’s still alive,” Meshkin recalled saying to hospital staff at the time.

    Meshkin’s case is an example of the post-Jahi medical world. Increasingly, brain-death diagnoses are no longer taken as certainties, and new legal options exist to prolong end-of-life decisions. Meshkin is clear — he doesn’t believe his daughter is a medical miracle who recovered from brain death; rather, he believes hospitals and insurance companies are often too quick to make the declarations.

    “This is their job to clear beds, and our job is to fight back,” Meshkin said Tuesday as he stood beside his daughter in a Walnut Creek care center near Rossmoor. “Mr. Dolan saved Jahi. He saved (Anahita) too. He’s my hero and Anahita’s savior.”

    Meshkin’s wife overdosed and died in 2011 out of grief over their youngest daughter’s condition, he said. He has no plans to stop his daughter’s care, despite medical professionals who question the decision.

    “I’ll fight as long as she does,” Meshkin said. “If she quits, I will quit. But I have my hope that she’ll come back.”

    Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, has released a list of 11 potential Supreme Court justices he plans to vet to fill the seat of late Justice Antonin Scalia if he’s elected to the White House.

    Trump’s picks include Steven Colloton of Iowa, Allison Eid of Colorado and Raymond Gruender of Missouri.

    Also on the list are: Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, Joan Larsen of Michigan, Thomas Lee of Utah, William Pryor of Alabama, David Stras of Minnesota, Diane Sykes of Wisconsin and Don Willett of Texas. Trump had previously named Pryor and Sykes as examples of kind of justices he would choose.

    Exploitative Financial Scheme That Fueled America’s Racist Housing Legacy Makes A Modern Comeback

    Investigators in New York will probe the resurgence of a dangerous housing finance practice that was historically used to target low-income black families who dreamed of owning their own home, the state’s Department of Financial Services announced Monday.

    Investigators have sent subpoenas to at least four separate companies that are helping drive a boom in a long-dormant alternative to a traditional mortgage, the Wall Street Journal reports.
    While the mortgage alternative is not inherently illegal, its shady legacy of exploitation has already prompted scrutiny from federal officials this spring.

    The tactic is often called “contract for deed” home finance. Under this model, investors purchase homes, often at the minimal prices afforded by foreclosure sales, and then seek out potential “buyers” who do not qualify for a mortgage because they are too poor. They then market a contract to the would-be homeowner under which she agrees to pay a fixed monthly fee for decades, knowing she will not actually get the deed to the place until the contract is fully paid off.

    Donald Trump Promises To ‘Dismantle’ Wall Street Reform

    In an interview with Reuters published on Wednesday, presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he will release an economic plan in two weeks that will undo nearly all of the financial reforms that went into effect in 2010.

    “I would say it’ll be close to a dismantling of Dodd-Frank,” he said, naming the financial reform package. “Dodd-Frank is a very negative force, which has developed a very bad name.”

    Trump’s comments are in stark contrast to his previous positioning of himself as a candidate who will be tough on the financial sector. Earlier this week, he criticized Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for her ties to big banks, saying, “She’s totally controlled by Wall Street.” A longtime adviser has also promised that Trump will crack down on the industry, saying recently, “Who’s been tougher on bankers than Donald Trump?” And Trump has promised to go after “hedge fund guys” who he says are “getting away with murder.”

    Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes told MSNBC there’s “no revolution here for Sanders” after the shady looking Hillary Clinton “victory” in Kentucky yesterday. Her vitriol toward the Sanders campaign, and by extension the people who support him, was evident in her comment.

    It should be noted, Hillary Clinton campaigned for Grimes back in 2014 when she was running for the US Senate. Both Bill and Hillary stumped for her during that campaign against Mitch McConnell. She lost badly.

    It should also be noted that Alison Lundergan Grimes as Sec. of State is the official in charge of counting the primary votes.

    First missing Chibok girl found, reunited with her family, activist says

    One of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014 has been reunited with her family, according to an activist with the Bring Back Our Girls movement in Nigeria.

    The girl was found by locals on the edge of Sambisa Forest, in the northeast of the country, where the girls were thought to have been held since being kidnapped from their school dormitory.

    Millions could get a raise under Obama administration’s new overtime rules

    The salary threshold for workers to qualify for overtime pay will double to $47,476 by December 2016, but the new rule has faced opposition

    ETA: “More than four million working Americans could get a bigger paycheck by the end of the year, thanks to a new overtime rule to be finalized by the US Department of Labor on Wednesday.

    Previously, only salaried workers who earned below $23,660 were eligible for overtime pay. As of December 2016, that threshold will double and be set at $47,476 a year.”

      So what’s changed since the 1960s and 1970s? Overtime pay, in part. Your parents got a lot of it, and you don’t. And it turns out that fair overtime standards are to the middle class what the minimum wage is to low-income workers: not everything, but an indispensable labor protection that is absolutely essential to creating a broad and thriving middle class.

      In 1975, more than 65 percent of salaried American workers earned time-and-a-half pay for every hour worked over 40 hours a week. Not because capitalists back then were more generous, but because it was the law. It still is the law, except that the value of the threshold for overtime pay—the salary level at which employers are required to pay overtime—has been allowed to erode to less than the poverty line for a family of four today. Only workers earning an annual income of under $23,660 qualify for mandatory overtime. You know many people like that? Probably not. By 2013, just 11 percent of salaried workers qualified for overtime pay, according to a report published by the Economic Policy Institute.
